Congress is in so-called recess, Members are facing voters on a number of issues but especially health care reform. President Obama is also taking time in August to make his pitch for changing the health care system and including a public option in the final package. The public option is essentially a government run health insurance plan that would compete with private insurance plans and, according to the President, help drive down health car costs. People have raised a lot of concerns about the cost of the program, estimated at more than a trillion dollars, and whether the public option is really a slippery slope to government take-over of health care. Of course, we shouldn't forget that through Medicaid and Medicare government is already responsible for a large portion (some estimate 40 percent) of health care coverage. KING 5 polls indicate most people in western Washington don't believe reform will improve their health care coverage or reduce its cost, but most people also think it's is necessary. So what do you think? Will health care reform happen and how will it impact your life one way or the other? 10 Comments |

The biggest problem I see with THIS health care reform is that Congress is trying to do so much to overhaul our entire medical system that even they do not know what is involved. During town hall meetings they are apparently not even able to answer questions. We still don't know how much this is going to cost, what type of coverage we will have, co-payments or % of cost we will need to pay, how much our premiums will be. I know that the 8% of payroll charged to companies that don't have coverage is less than my company currently pays for insurance, so I'm sure they will cancel our insurance. Then the company will pay 8% and the employees will have to pay for their own coverage (as I understand it).
There is just too much unknown - and that does
not even touch on how it will be managed. They way the govt has managed SS and medicare and the budget problems they have doesn't give me much confidence.
A step away from the choke hold that the Insurance and Pharmaceutical companies have on us is a good thing. Anyone who has medicare will tell you that it isn't perfect but they wouldn't give it up either. Keep in mind that many companies have left the US for Canada because of the cost of insuring their employees. The only ones who win with what we have now, are the insurance companies.
Where are Senator Patty Murray and Senator Maria Cantwell? Why are they choosing to not be available to their constituents during this recess? I am a 61 year old Independent. I consider myself a moderate. I have never been politically active. Health Care Reform has changed this. I am passionate about the future of Health Care in the US. I believe I represent a large portion of constituents in this state. I have contacted both Senator's regarding Town Halls or Forums on Health Care Reform. Both Senator's offices have told me the Senator's did not have schedules for this recess. I was informed of this as late as last week. Senator Cantwell's office told me they would inform the media, if she decided to have a public meeting. I asked them if the media meant TV or the Newspaper. They told me they had not defined what form of media. Senator Murray's office has simply been rude and evasive. We are hearing much about respecting our elected officials. What about them respecting us? These two Senators are about to tackle the issue that will impact every American. I need to be more informed. I need to understand what they are trying to accomplish. I need to be heard, as do all their constituents. I happpen to be against a massive over haul of our Health Care System. This problem should be tackle thoughtfully, carefully and in increments. I do not understand their lack of leadership. Please, can you contact them and invite them to appear on your show or be available in some form to the public.

I am very disappointed at the prospect of a public option being dropped from the bill. I am a supporter of single payer. Our current system not only does NOT serve the citizens well due to lack of availability of health care, it also causes us to be less competitive in business because nearly every other country we do business with has single payer in some form. Most of them also have better health outcomes than we do. So, not only do we not have adequate health care, but more jobs are being lost every day because it is cheaper for a company to hire overseas when they don't have the burden of health insurance. Only the insurance companies (and obviously many politicians) are benefiting from this system. Each year, we get less for our money, our premiums increase, our deductibles increase and our coverage decreases. This is not adequate for anyone except the ultra rich or those working for companies large enough that they have SOME leverage over insurance companies or they are SELF-INSURING and PROFITING from their employees' premiums. We need reform NOW. With more people unemployed every day, this crisis is only going to get bigger. If the Democrats can't get this passed with at LEAST a public option, then they have done nothing to reform health care.
Didn't anyone read the news yesterday??? Canada's health care system is in dire straits, so is England's and of course so is our medicare.
JUST BECAUSE THE PEOPLE LIKE HAVING THEIR HEALTHCARE PAID FOR DOESN'T MEAN THE SYSTEM WORKS!!!
The arguments being made in favor of government run single-payer health care are fatally flawed. When you destroy competition in a free market (which is what the bill aims to accomplish over time), you are left with a state run monopoly. Such a system would be no less corrupt and would be politically driven instead of market driven. We would be left with no choices, and no recourse when bean-counting bureaucrats without medical knowledge deny care deemed "too expensive" or "unnecessary". Such a system would drive away good doctors and lead to a serious drop in the quality and availability of care. Those deemed to be "rich" by liberal standards would end up paying the freight so that others (including illegal immigrants) would get care for free. Granted, our current system has its shortcomings, but this "reform" is a death blow. The proponents of this claim that "anything is better", change for change sake. Be careful what you wish for... What you get could be MUCH worse!
Tim--
The only problem with your argument is that we can look north to Canada and see that it's not true. The the per person cost of heath care is cheaper and the health outcomes (length and quality of life) mare much better. Competition is great in sports and the economy but it should not be the guiding principle for health care. It simply has been shown not to work efficiently.
We don't need the government in charge of health care. The government is taking over every private industry which leads to socialism. Our health care problems can be solved by stopping fraud, making the drug companies charge less;they sell drugs to other countries for a fraction of what they charge Americans.Everyone can help cut health cost by having only the necessity done. Many people will take anything just as long as the insurance or medicare pays for it, regardless
if they need it or not. One friends gets shots for arthritis every 2 or 3 months at the tune of $2,000 a shot. This is rediculious. Medicare has paid doctors for giving the same proceedure 9 times in one day to one patient. How stupid can our system be. Wake up America & take our country back or else we will end up loosing all our freedom. The only change America needs is to change back to what it originally started from,"One Nation under God with liberty & justace for all,"NOt that we tax payers do without while Washington lives higher & higher on the hog. Just plain stop the pork & this rediculious spendings, bankrupting our great country is not the solution, Common sense is!
