Author Matt Miller says America is being held captive by dead ideas. He says these dead ideas, like local control of schools and employer provided benefits no longer work. Among his targets: school standards need more federal control; employers need to get out of the health care and retirement business; and Americans need to learn to live with higher taxes. Miller also thinks this moment in history, with the economy declining and lawmakers scrambling for solutions, provides an opportunity for change and creation. What do you think? Is America in line for some creative changes as we try to deal with this lousy economy? 6 Comments |

I do think that Americans need to learn to live with higher taxes in some cases. I to don't like to pay any taxes that I don't have to but I also realize that taxes pay for rods, public transit and other programs that are need to keep this country running. When it comes to heath care I think we need something like the British health care system and know one would be able to opt out. This would cover every one in the US. lets make the US live up to the priciples it was founded on.
I believe education needs competition. Why haven’t more school districts adopted competition and choice? Because the defenders of the public school monopoly are organized and active. There are lots of ways to achieve school choice— tax credits, vouchers, charter schools. Why works the farm during the summer anymore. Education should be serous enough to go year round, this is the job of youth.
Education is the future of our culture and society.

We're in deeper now than ever before. As a forensic economics analyst, I cannot see where spending money we can't hope to back is going to pull us out of this national fiscal pit which both political parties tossed the taxpayers into. Let's face it, you can't mismanage your funds then go running to the government for a bailout and big business should not be allowed to. If a company has to go under due to poor management and outright theft....let it. Why couldn't Chrysler and GM watch what Ford was doing 3 years ago to secure their future? Why couldn't chrysler and GM take the same actions. It's up to individuals to take the actions they need to take to secure their future. As to the idea of a national healthcare plan; one should only cover people who can't get or afford health insurance. I've been to England, Russia and Canada...and national healthcare is an expensive joke. It's not uncommon for people with appendicictis to wait 14 hours to be seen by a doctor.
I saw this aired last night, and I really hope you either upload the whole video or put it somewhere else that I can tell people I know to go and watch. Although I disagree with some of Michael Miller's ideas (especially the younger generation "accepting" a bleak future instead of forging a new and better one), I think as far as realizing we are at a historical turning point he is exactly right. Once that it is obvious that these changes are inevitable, new ideas will emerge that will fundamentally change the way we think about our needs and, I believe, provide new solutions that are better than we can imagine. Necessity IS the mother of invention, and it is time for America and the world to reinvent itself.
There are certain truths that never change. Big Government taking care of us from cradle to grave is NOT a new idea! This approach has always been doomed to failure and will always be, because it is inherently inefficient, wasteful and subject to fraud and abuse. Government programs paint everything as one size fits all and cannot possibly be dynamic enough. This applies to everything from education to health care. The new ideas and innovation need to come from the private sector, without government interference.
