Looking back at 2008

9:00 AM Sun, Dec 28, 2008 |

Obviously most of us won't forget the snow storm of 2008 any time soon. The presidential election and the shrinking economy are also going to be vivid memories for many if not all of us. Members of the news media have watched the shrinking newspaper business with horror. No doubt the strike looms big for Boeing workers. Perhaps you were laid off and the so-called recession may look more like a depression to you. Do you miss the Sonics? Let us know what you think you will remember most about 2008.

All of those except the Sonics..Number one in my "who cares" category. It showed the sports "business" in all its naked glory. As far as the "horror" of the declining newspaper business, much of it is self inflicted. Has anyone ever seen as an example, what a 4x3 color ad cost for a one time run?? Its mega bucks even in the small papers and wipes out small business advertising budgets in a heartbeat. Thats why you only see Macys, Les Schwab, JC Pennys etc. Sure, newspapers cost a lot to operate but honestly, I have seen little to convince me that their ad rates are broad based to invite more business to participate. This goes for you guys in the electronic media as well. Production costs compound the cost too. If you guys want to stay alive and compete with the internet, I'd suggest you all huddle up and rethink your rates and who you would like to see pay them other than the big gun accounts that take care of some ad execs boat payment..

Your upfront program Sunday morning about all the sports things for 2009 forgot to mention that the Thunderbirds will be in their new home in Kent, The ShoWare Center.
