Rep. Dave Reichert is running for a third term in the 8th Congressional District. Critics say Reichert's views on Iraq are not a good fit for the district. What do you think? 35 Comments |

Yes, definately! He's also done a great job on the environment which you didn't talk about.
No. This country needs fundammental change away from those who have supported Bush. There are multiple inter-twined problems that the ones in power haven't even begun on. Reichert and others are not thinking long term about our health, our environment and our economic vitality.
I live in Seattle city and within the 8th congressional district and I am proud and pleased with the job Dave Reichert is doing. There are a lot more Republicans in this area than the Liberals want to admit.
I'm a little sick of the media equating every single Republican in this country with George Bush. I am not Bush. Reichart is not Bush.
Of course he deserves another term.
He isn't an idealogue. He comes across as a guy who listens to all sides, and then makes good common sense decisions.
He had thorny, very public issues to deal with as Sheriff of King County and did a good job there.
He seems to be following the same path in Congress. I'd like to keep him there.
If you want a police state, elect a policeman.
Saying what (R)team believes you want to hear is what I heard during this interview:
Not lock step with the Administration, yet, you'd expect a good cop or general to accept orders. Did he really say as Swat commander he would disobey an order by the chief? Yes he did. Did he really say he was like a Cop in congress? Yes he did.
Do we need 2 more years of lock step Bush-ism? No we do not.
Darcy Burner is Harvard educated in business, which will benefit our economy. She is for ending the war in Iraq, which is what Obama/Biden and 70% of Americans are for.
Time for a change.
I do think Reichert deserves another term. He brings a sense of calm, reason and common sense to the region. Why let someone like that go? It doesn't 'really' matter the party in the end... if he were a democrat I'd probably vote for him as well.
No. Two reasons: 1--in a consituent call a few months ago I asked Mr. Reichert to back up his claim that he is somehow independent of Bush/Cheney. He gave a couple COMPARATIVELY minor areas where he had differed from the "Republican" party-line. On the BIG issues he differs not at all. 2--On his claim that he is a "Cop" in Congress I have asked him multiple times to respond to the criminal behavior by our President and members of our government and he has not responded. I asked him as a LAW-man to act and he has been silent. (I am speaking as a registered Republican.)
Yes, Mr. Reichert has proven himself beyond expectations over the years, despite the so called critics (liberals and their media puppets like the Up Front interviewers) statements, which are almost always based on popular thoughtless opinions and not true facts. We praise Mr. Reichert and others whom sincerely care about this great country of ours, and pray for and forgive those whom wish to destroy it with socialism.
Yes. He's independent and qualified and seems to be able to work bipartisanly, which is getting more and more rare. He even got an educators' endorsement. For a republican, that's almost unheard of. He must be doing something right. He's also pro-environment. How anyone can peg him as being a Bush sycophant is beyond me. And, besides, Darcy Burner? Are you kidding me?
Dave Reichert appears to be a decent politician who has had to kowtow to the Bush wing and vote against his conscience on several issues; not unlike Sen. Gordon Smith in Oregon. Once the President has left office, I think we'll see a more independent Mr. Reichert. I think Darcy Burner is too far to the left of her constituency to be an effective congressperson. Reichert should be re-elected; give him another chance.
I am totally against Mr Reichert's re-election and I'm still buffled by the fact that he won against so many smarter and experienced opponents.
Also I can't believe that he even said that even if he had been a congressman at the time that the tax breaks he would have voted for them.
Where does he get that info that tax breaks really helped creat jobs. You can't say that jobs were created and at the same time more than 4% unemployment has been created by this administration only equaled by the Reagan/Bush Sr years.
Yes! We need good, honorable, intellegent leaders like Dave Reichert. He knows that lower taxes means more money for small business investments, which equates to more jobs. We need to keep Dave Reichert as a leader in Washington state and Washington D.C.! Re-elect Dave Reichert!
I enjoyed hearing what Representative Reichert had to say and for the most part I agreed with him. However, I was rather put off by the individuals interviewing him and the way that they made their party affiliations clear.
Yes
Yes
YES!
Dave is a moderate who does what is best for the District. Darcy does what is best for Darcy.
Dave has served this district, policing it and doing the heavy lifting to help us for 30+ years. Darcy has, um... raised a lot of money from special interest groups.
In fact, Darcy said last week that she expects to be in Congress for 30-40 years!
Two years ago, Darcy was unqualified for Congress. Two years later, Dave has worked hard for us, getting wildlife preserves and many other issues passed. Darcy could have gone out and volunteered to provide service, or found a leadership post, but she instead went out and started campaigning.
YES Dave Reichert deserves to be in Congress.
Yes! Dave Reichert should remain a representative for Washington State, as a Congressman, or in another public serving capacity (Senator). Washington State needs various representatives that actually have common sense experience, earned from real life experience from years of experience. Not years of being a career politician, of whom such people are completely disconnected from the citizens they are supposed to represent, and instead represent Lobbyists. We do not need public representatives who only have a quick tongue, and are morally bankrupt.
Dave should be re-elected since he has more common sense than most leadership on the democratic side. It's obvious by Lori's attack attitude she does not agree with Congressman Reichert, so I could say she is in lockstep with most journalist on the left. Why can't we just discuss issues and not put party labels on the candidates. The tax issue is a perfect example of the ignorance of democrats. The Government sends money to taxpayers as an economic stimulus package but wants to let the current tax package President Bush passed expire thus taking more money away from taxpayers. What misguided logic. On the one hand you want to stimulate the economy by giving taxpayers some of their money back and then turn around and want to take it away and expect the same results. No wonder Congress has a 18 percent approval rating.
Andrew, you hit the nail right on the head. Robert Mak would have been ashamed of King5 anchorwoman Lori Matsukawa's handling of the interview with Congressman Reichert.
Lori's conduct of the Dave Reichert interview was argumentative, snide and showed an obvious disregard for the sitting Congressman. Every time the camera panned to her she had a snarl on her face. It almost looked like David Postman got nervous with how aggressive this feisty lady next to him was being. Would it surprise you to learn that Lori's a lifelong Democrat?!?
Matsukawa's only political donation was to a Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in 1994. Public records reveal that she took a Democrat ballot in this year's Presidential Primary. That’s right, in a contest where only the most partisan of voters participate, Matsukawa voted Democrat… one only has to wonder: Barack or Hillary?
I hope King5 will remove Lori from all future Up Front episodes since she obviously has a strong bias against Republican candidates. And people wonder why we suspect the news media of being biased… Lori is a prime example. She didn’t even try to look unbiased in the interview. Shame on King 5 for putting her on the air with this interview.
Someone stated Darcy Burner was Harvard Educated - so what! A previous Seattle School District Superintendent "Olchefsky?" was an Ivy League (I think Harvard) graduate in accounting, and managed to run the Seattle School District into the red about thirty million dollars before getting a severance package. That idiot should have been fired on the spot, and personally sued for incompetence! Thirty Million in the red, what a legacy! Darcy Burner has what great legacy to date? Dave Reichert is a known quantity, with years of service to the great benefit of Washington State!
Based upon her tone during promotional spots and her "lockstep" question during the interview, it was abundantly clear that Lori Matsukawa was biased against Mr. Reichert. Does Dave Reichert deserve another term? ABSOLUTELY! I for one am sick and tired of the same old liberal party line that says all Republicans are automatically the same as George Bush. Up and down economic cycles are normal, and cannot be blamed on a single party or individual. Punishing (taxing) success does not result in prosperity, and only makes more people poor. Darcy Burner is just another liberal clone, spouting the same old lies and twisted half-truths. Ms. Burner should also be ashamed for trying to use her burned down house for political gain.
No, he is not the independent person soem imagine him to be. He has never questioned a significant Bush policy in all his years in office. He has made some minor stabs at placating teh environmentla community, but never has he questioned the use of torture, the course of the war (he claims the surge, but will not admit the surge is responsible for only some of teh current decline in violence), the way the unlimited ,no-contract bids of the Bush administration has cost the taxpayer far, far more thatn if the government had done thework itself, or at least bid it. He may tweek some edges, but has no significant indiepent thoughts of his own.
I was totally put off by Lori Matsukawa's bias against Congressman Reichert. I can't believe channel 5 would allow a reporter to show that much bias.
I think Matsukawa and King 5 owe Dave Reichert an apology.
I think you are doing yourselves /KING5 a disservice by having Lori Matsukawa doing the interviews for UP Front this political season if she continues in this questioning style she used with Dave Reichert. I always thought Robert Mak did an axcellent job of being even handed in his interview and coverage. He was tough but respectful. I felt I was given the tools to make decisions for myself. The tone of the questioning by Ms Matsukawa was confrontational not assertive. If she continues in this manner I will not feel I will be getting a fair view of the races we are to vote on. This is a case of media bias showing its face I believe. She was working for her own agenda in this interview not mine. Look for another Mak !
Maybe Lori should check statistics, and she would find the real downturn in our economy began when the Dem's took control of Congress
Dave Reichert deserves reelection as an independent voice in Congress.
Shame on Lori for her biased views and attitude. She needs to read up on what reporters are supposed to do - I guess it's been too long since she attended journalism classes. She also needs to be replaced on Up Front.
Finally, I thought it was interesting that Lance Miller was writing as a registered Republican since we don't have party registration in our state.
Many have this correct, Tim Lambert dead on!!! I think the better question; "Does Christine deserve another chance at Governor?"
I think not
I am not in your district, however Dave did an excellent job as a Police man (cop) whatever you want to call him. But also he was the "KING COUNTY SHERRIF". That is a higher position as a cop, he did an excellent job their also. Being a police officer is like being a teacher, you are either born with it or you arent. There are police out there that dont belong, however Dave Reichert does belong and did and has done an excellent job as a "Public Servant".
Take him out and put in Darcy? Ok go shoot yourself in the foot. What has she accomplished.
That is like putting Obama and his loud mouth running mate in the white house.
No thanks, lets leave the morons out of these positions.
Darcy Burner has accomplished nothing - low level job at Microsoft which she overstates, no political experience at all (she resorts to touting working on her homeowner association!), dropped out of UW law school (where is that in the news, by the way?). All she has shown she can do is self-promote - she has no achievements in any other area (and so resorts to touting, for example, that because she manages her family finances she is qualified on national fiscal matters). And her views are simplistic and to the far left of the mainstream (read her positions on taxes and other issues - for example, she disfavors free trade and is in general radically anti-business/pro-labor).
He might work for another term but he may very well be operating under a different regime. The problem with electing ex-cops is that they take that mentality into public office with them. Thats ok sometimes, but we know that you're average street cop takes "politically correct" only to a certain point. A reason that Rick Bart, Reicharts Snohomish County counterpart, isn't looked at as credible. He's not what you call a social animal with the public. He makes the voters out as suspects rather than constituents.
Reichert did well on Up Front, and has done well representing his voters. Lori Matsukawa however did a horrible job with this interview. She seemed to be unaware of the fact that he is working for the people who voted for him and agree with conservative beliefs. I was stunned and very disapppointed in her bias journalism. My opinion of Reichert was luke warm at best before watching. I was impressed with his responses this weekend. My previously high opinion of Lori M is shattered and I hope King 5 takes that into consideration next time her contract is up for renewal. KIRO may get more of my attention.
Firstly, Reichert was the Sheriff who for 25 or 30 years, never could catch the Green River killer, even though he had interviewed him very early on and said he felt suspicious about the guy. So, then we make him a Congressman? OK, I thought, so long as he does what's good for regular folks, not big business and good ol' boys. But he's always backed Bush as far as I could see, and Bush backs him in return. All this is enough to make me vote for Mickey Mouse simply to see Reichert unemployed as I think he should be. Even a Republican like myself can see that with the illegal hijacking of the US Attorneys by the Republicans, added to all the lies, deceit and republican power-grabbing & constitutional rights-smashing over the last 8 years, that a thinking Red-blooded American with a conscience should elect ONLY Democrats at this point in history.
Not with mine. Besides, I would rather have Darcy Burner working with President Obama than have Dave Reichert on the minority side without any power.
Rick, First off Barak Husein Obama is not our president, so president Obama is a little crystal glass isnt it?
Hey I would have voted for him if he had picked a better running mate, we are ready for an African American president but I dont beleive Obama is the one, too many people dont like the idea and radicals will try and make him meet the same fate as John F. Kennedy. Its sad but true.
McCain and Rice would be a good combination.
I think the Sheriff deserves another term, fact is I hope we in the 8th can keep him in Washington another 20 years. There he does no harm, is not effectual in law making but more importantly isn't here to muck things up. Please DC Keep him! its a cheap expense for our safety, security and our homes
Recently the US House of Representatives passed H.R. 5351, the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2008, legislation that will extend and enhance tax credits for investments in renewable energy sources, including tax breaks for purchases of hybrid vehicles. While Reichert is on record having voted "for" this bill, a review of the procedural votes leading up to the final vote shows that Reichert followed the instructions of his Republican leadership and voted to block, ignore, or obstruct the bill at every opportunity. It was only when passage of the bill was inevitable that Reichert flipped and voted for the bill, presumably to be able to appear for the record as being "for" green energy and to reinforce the false notion that he is a moderate Republican and not the Bush-Cheney toadie that he really is.
The 8th Congressional Ditrict needs a representative in Washington who really is for an energy policy that frees us from our reliance on foreign oil. Darcy Burner will support investment in energy-efficiency programs and clean energy technologies because it is the right thing to do and not just because it is politically expedient.
Please join me in supporting Darcy Burner for Congress.
Dave Reichert is a total joke! Give me a break! He should have never even been elected!
