In 2006, Darcy Burner ran as the Democratic candidate in the 8th Congressional District against incumbent Dave Reichert. Burner linked Reichert to President Bush and his Iraq policies. Reichert's campaign challenged Burner's lack of public service experience. In the end, Reichert won a close race. Now, two years later, Burner is back. Does she have what it takes to defeat Reichert this time? 39 Comments |

I WATCHED UP FRONT WITH DARCY BURNER AND I'M NOT IN HER DISTRICT BUT SHE DID NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE LOWER GLASS. THEY ALL SAY THE UPPER CLASS AND MIDDLE INCOME BUT POLITICIANS NEVER TALK ABOUT THE LOWER CLASS INCOME. WHY IS THAT. DON'T WE COUNT TOO. I'M ON DISABILITY AND I GET A HECK OF LOT LESS THAN MIDDLE INCOME. I'M TIRED OF EVERYONE FORGETTING ABOUT US.
Yes, of course she does. Darcy is more in touch with reality and understands the current issues the 8th District faces more clearly than her opponent. Darcy is one of the needed agents of change to get this country on the right track again. Go Darcy!
Okay, I watched upfront. Not impressed with Darcy Burner. Why does she feel the need to tie herself to Obama? All she talked about was her representation of her people, and the 520 bridge. She needs to go in with the intent to help all of washington state. To do what is best for all, not just redmond, etc...No thanks Darcy, I will stick with Richert.
Darcy Burner is the candidate that represents change, not Dave Reichert. Reichert has been aligned with Bush policies that have proven poor judgement. Darcy Burner is very smart and forward thinking. She authored the Responisible Plan to End the Iraq War which is very detailed and pragmatic. She knows the needs of the east side and the needs of the technology industry that flourishes there. The last time they ran Reichert ran a sexist ad portraying her as a dumb blond which is offensive to women and has received some national attention as an example sexism in campaigns.
Look, Reichert is dumb. Every seen him talk about policy? No, he only talks about himself and what he did when he was Sheriff almost 10 years ago now. He doesn't even have a bachelor's degree. I don't know how the guy got elected in the first place.
We've got a chance to replace him with somebody who's smart and articulate. I trust her more than him to make good judgments. And she'd be in the majority in the House. That's how you get the money to fund the infrastructure we need over here.
Darcy Burner is a great candidate. I hope she wins.
I disagree with Sue's comment about doing what's best for the people in the rest of the state. Congress people are elected to represent their district and look after their constituents. Reichert's district has needs that Seattle doesn't. Seattle doesn't have the high tech infrastructure that the Eastside does. Seattle also doesn't have all the rural areas in South King and Pierce counties. That's a particular set of people who have their own concerns. The rep from that district shouldn't worry about the people in Seattle or Tacoma or Walla Walla.
Burton's entire campaign has the theme of anti-Bush, tying her opponent to Bush, and of her grabbing for Obama’s coat tails. All of the positions she currently espouses appear to be contrived and coached. What we need in congress are people that are intelligent thinkers, have shown strong leadership qualities, and have a record of serving the public good. I could make the case that Burton is probably more intelligent, but NOT a more intelligent thinker than her opponent. One the other 2 issues she is a non-starter. So why is she running? It probably goes back to a statement a friend made many, many years ago to me. He said, "In Washington, if one of our founding fathers ran against Donald Duck, the one with a (D) by their name would win."
I thought she was great. She is obviously intelligent and obviously cares about the people of this state. We need change and we need pragmatic problem-solvers. Reichert hasn't even passed a bill since he's been in Congress!
Are you kidding me? What a bunch of softball questions. Where was Postman this week? Last week he and Lori attacked Reichert two on one (see for yourselves watch last weeks video). This looked and sounded like a campaign commercial for Darcy. Robert Mak would be ashamed. Dave Reichert is clearly more intelligent and much more qualified than Darcy. What was her experience again?
1. Running against Bush is a great idea. Seen the price of gas lately? Or the president's approval ratings in the last 3 years?
2. When it comes to intelligence, it's not a question. He's a former junior college football player, she's a Harvard educated computer scientist.
But the question isn't about intelligence. It's about judgement. Dave Reichert votes with the President on Iraq, on the economy, on those disastrous tax cuts that have working people subsidizing corporations. Darcy published the most widely praised position paper on how to successfully end the war in Iraq. There's no arguing who's got the interest of the nation at heart in that one.
I can't believe that a Republican is going to try to make the experience argument after John McCain's VP choice.
That was a great interview actually. Thank goodness someone finally is asking her what exactly makes her qualified to "represent us"? There are tens of thousands of people who are smart but who have no business being in congress. She is in that category.
I also doubt her numbers work. She said she would increase the marriage deduction to 20,000 per family so I guess that the 40% of us who are single will be paying for that?
Darcy doesn't represent me or my family. She doesn't work, her husband doesn't work, does your husband stay at home so you can run around doing your hobby? not mine. She seems like a carpet bagger, She didn't grow up here, she uses her brother to try to win votes, she doesn't commute, she didn't go to local public schools, in fact why did it take her what 9 years to finish college, she lied about her job at Microsoft (she worked down the hall from me). She has never served in ANY public office and has no connection to real people.
She is just riding on Obama's coat tails. Why can't the Dem's get a decent candidate? We could have won this district.
Darcy Burner wants to ride a tidal wave of 'change' all the way to Capitol Hill, based apparently on little more than the words Harvard and Microsoft on her resume. Her main civic involvment has been, and still is, campaigning for office. Too much talk and not enough action.
Remember how Reichert bragged about getting that bus driver fired for flipping off Bush? I think Darcy would be good for the 8th because she's not beholden to the republican establishment.
Are all the lawyers who run for office qualified?
Does public service experience mean that you've got good judgment?
Research shows that the people who are the highest performers in their fields are the ones who push harder, not necessarily the ones who have the most experience. Reichert is a great example of that. He's one of the least effective members of Congress. I've called his office on two different occasions and couldn't get a policy person on the phone. Apparently he only has 2.
Darcy Burner has been pushing, doing things beyond her realm of comfort. She's never been elected to anything before. Big deal. She knows the industries that drive the economy in my neighborhood. She gets how the things that the government does impact what happens here in Issaquah.
That's what I want in a Congressman. I want somebody who knows how to make the gears work to make things happen in my district. Reichert clearly doesn't and I'm willing to bet Darcy Burner will figure it out.
I get it. Lori asked light questions that Darcy didn't even answer (such as what is your experience). Last week Lori angrily went after Reichert Why don't you just rename the show, "Up Yours, Republicans."
How sad it is to see that since Robert Mak has left King 5 the fair and balanced insight for the voters has been abandoned by the obviously left wing views of Lori Matsukawa. As to the comment regarding legislation being passed, I would refer you to Dave Reichert's web site and you will find his accomplishments there. Dave is one of the few republicans nationwide that has been endorsed by the National Education Association and he has also been endorsed by the Washington Education Association. Dave Reichert has been serving all people of the 8th district and he loves meeting with people to discuss the difficult issues that we all face. You never see his oponent out at parades, fairs or other community events just talking with people like Dave Reichert does.
Hey markhall - seen the approval ratings of the democratic congress lately? Worse than the Presidents. How about that.
And Kudos to both Tom and Ken Hodges - I'm suprised KING let Lori do this interview at all. I think KING owes an apology to Congressman Reichert last weeks show.
Cathy Allen is not swaying any voters by making disgusting comments like: “Sarah Palin is an insult to other women”. How can a woman be an insult to other women? It was an unprofessional and hateful comment. Furthermore, is it really necessary to belittle the State of Alaska and its governor’s position? We think that was uncalled for!
The spirit of the show has been to provide us with insights and facts voters can base their opinions on. Where was Postman? We appreciated Chris Vance’s professional and factual comments. Please bring higher standards back.

I am so impressed by Darcy Burner. She will be one of the only Representatives in this country that will read every word of every bill she votes on. That is a big thing to me. I think its important.
She will be one of the most tech-savvy reps in a district that will need good-paying technological jobs (Boeing, software, Green-collar jobs.)
She will be independent and pragmatic and she will listen to us, not the special interests.
I agree with those who have expressed the view that Lori Matsukawa is biased. What softball questions she asked! How is her burned down house at all relevant? How does that apply to any issue? Darcy Burner is a simpleton who is trying to ride the "change" wave into office. I have a question for Ms. Burner that Lori did not ask: When you close those "corporate loopholes" and tax them more, who do you suppose they are going to pass that cost on to? You guessed it, the same "middle class"! It'll cost them money and cost them jobs.... She has no experience whatsoever, and is just an opportunist!
Where to begin with Darcy. Just another unemployed Microsoft Millionaire with a superiority complex. She has had many opportunities to serve her community and yet she doesn't. No volunteering, No charity works, Nothing.
She talks about cutting taxes, but her Party ticket is headed by Senator Obama who has stated he will raise taxes? Is she going to deliver tax cuts by eliminating the Bush tax cuts? That will cost the average family in the 8th about $3,000 a year more. Capital Gains Taxes going from 15% to 36% under Obama. Removing the cap on Social Security Taxes, that will not impact anyone working at Microsoft will it?
She has never held any position of public responsibility, she has never worked with anyone she disagrees with politically to accomplish anything for the public good. She is not the right person for the job.
What is with the terrible hate that exists in all Democrats.....all they ever talk about is how bad Bush is. They never talk about how they would change things for the better - only that Bush is to blame for everything bad in the world.
I myself like bush....and Bush isn't bad either.
Jeeze, Darcy B still talks like the high school student.
That woman at the end was especially annoying. It would appear her plan was to answer every question first then sneak in the last word after the republican guy spoke.
The only way the dems play is by cheating like this, disgusting.
After last weeks interview with Dave Reichert, I was guessing on how soft Darcy's interview would be. I was NOT disappointed. Gees Lori, how could you not have a violin playing in the background and a box of puppies on the desk? I seem to remember most reported house fire stories say whether there was a working smoke detector. Why did the kid wake them up before the smoke detector? Is the Burner household too irresponsible to even have a smoke detector and is this the Burner way to hit up the insurance company for a new house on the lake? You asked about the fire, I am just continuing the questions. I don't remember Robert Mak to ever being this one sided, he must be ashamed. Next time, why not ask Darcy for her favorite recipe?
Shame on you, Upfront! I am really getting tired of the media leaning one direction. Your slant is not unbiased reporting! Last week you had two people pretty much attach Reichert. You handled Darcy with all the hard nosed journalism of a wet noodle. Hard to miss who you support. Is that the point of your show? Why not call it "The Voice of Democrats"? That is clearly what you are showing..... It is a sad day in journalism when it is all about propaganda...what has happened to the news???
Democrats always promise to only tax the rich but once in office, they always tax everyone (Gregoire, Clinton, etc). Burner is no different. Taxpayers need Reichert to fight for them, regardless of who becomes President, but most especially if it's Obama.
And am I the only one who thought Burner sounded like Mr. Rogers or an elementary school teacher talking to kids? I thought at any moment she'd scold Lori Matsukawa for not eating her carrots. She's incredibly condescending and annoying.
Tim Eyman, Mukilteo
No kidding! And what about the hair? She never has it coifed that way. She also is wearing gray instead of black, her signature color. It was so saccharin I thought I was watching Romper Room.
Darcy Burner is spot on with what is wrong in this country today. It seems most people posting on here forget that she lost in a recount in 06 which means this district is looking for someone else to hear their voice in D.C. People wonder what she's been doing? She brought together the most influential figures on foreign policy from several ideological backgrounds to put together a responsible way to end the war in Iraq. When it comes to education, she was endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers and several other labor organizations. This race is not about Democrats or Republicans, it's about who is going to help the most people in this district...and that person without a doubt is Darcy Burner!
I supported Jim Vaughn's run for Congress because as a Democrat I did not believe I was represented by my own party. I think his thoughts below make sense.
Obama: rock star image plays to his favor and could do a lot to calm the international waters. My biggest concern is the economy. What scares me is that we could potentially have a scenario on the national level that we have in Washington State. By that I mean a liberal president and a liberal congress where nothing gets fixed, no fiscal accountability and the solution is to tax us to death. On a positive note, the nomination of Senator Joe Biden is a big plus and for the first time I feel as though the Democratic Party is making an effort to listen to the moderate and conservative voters.
McCain: On the positive side, I would like to see a Republican President if for no other reason than to keep the liberal Progressive Democrats in check. Now that Senator McCain has chosen Sarah Palin as his choice for VP, I believe he has hit a home run. Sarah has more experience than Obama and I find it extremely hypocritical when the Democrats criticize her experience only to support Darcie who lacks any experience other than being a professional candidate. Not a bad hobby, since Darcie can collect up to $165K per year (the amount she would make if elected) to be a professional looser.
As a Blue Dog Democrat, I have seen the negative impact of partisan politics. The fact that Sarah has stood up to her party and is truly focused on representing the voters has earned my respect and the Republicans have the bases loaded with Dave Reichert, Dino Rossi and John McCain.
Like many voters, I realize and feel the impact of government and want the best person to represent me.
I think that Darcy Burner's intelligence and judgment really showed in this interview - a clear contrast to Congressman Reichert's lack of initiative on important issues for our district over the last four years. It was great to see that she has thought through how we can turn around our economy and responsibly end the war in Iraq with real solutions instead of just following President Bush's lead.
I'm tired of hearing about 'change'. It is an empty statement. Most importantly, we watch people spend money like it grows on trees. I don't think people would really like the kind of change Burner and Obama stand for. They just don't know what they could be in for.
Could someone at King 5 please guide Ms. Matsukawa in the art of unbias reporting? This is two weeks in a row she has not been able to hid where she falls with the candidates. Shame on you Ms. Matsukawa.
Sorry Ed, you have your facts wrong, Darcy never lost anything in a recount, she was never ahead.
Darcy is used to telling tall tales and so are her supporters. She lied about having 565,000 calls placed against her on election eve '06 saying "she was about to be arrested". She complained that the system was bias against Democratic women after she lost.
She is simply another Camp Wellstone egotist, who knows better than all of those poor slobs in the 8th distict what is best for them...Hey did you know Darcy went to Harvard? She's retired before she is 40 and hasn't drawn a paycheck in 5 years. Sounds like she is in touch with the people alright.
I think that Darcy did a great job and that the 8th district would be lucky to have her represent them. She is a good person that wants the best for others as opposed to the Republican party representation that only wants the best for the very fortunate few. Also if any of these individuals are convinced that Darcy Burner is a multi-millionaire they are sorely mistaken as shown by several news articles that have exploited the finances of the Burner family.
Recently the US House of Representatives passed H.R. 5351, the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2008, legislation that will extend and enhance tax credits for investments in renewable energy sources, including tax breaks for purchases of hybrid vehicles. While Reichert is on record having voted "for" this bill, a review of the procedural votes leading up to the final vote shows that Reichert followed the instructions of his Republican leadership and voted to block, ignore, or obstruct the bill at every opportunity. It was only when passage of the bill was inevitable that Reichert flipped and voted for the bill, presumably to be able to appear for the record as being "for" green energy and to reinforce the false notion that he is a moderate Republican and not the Bush-Cheney toadie that he really is.
The 8th Congressional Ditrict needs a representative in Washington who really is for an energy policy that frees us from our reliance on foreign oil. Darcy Burner will support investment in energy-efficiency programs and clean energy technologies because it is the right thing to do and not just because it is politically expedient.
Please join me in supporting Darcy Burner for Congress.
So, Brian Gunn, what YOU want is an Obama-Pelosi toadie instead! Someone who will blindly support all of the left-wing Democrat agendas! It's all in the perspective, ain't it???
Odd to say, but I'll be voting all blue this year. Anyone inline with Bush policies/ideology should be out. Republicans may say no new taxes but guess what happens? The deficit balloons. Tell me of one republican incumbent in any office be it at state level or federal level that balanced the budget successfully. I would love to look that up. You can probably guess which of the past presidents and current presidents who's caused our caused our national debt to grow to astounding rates. I make a clear distintion here. Republican voters naively vote for values/ideology. The republican politians are corrupted crooks that take advantage of this and line the pockets of their corporate constituents. Never trust a republican POLITICIAN as far as you can throw one.
A true conservative. Not like Bush or McCain. Thats what We of the 5th District like.
Dave didn't Vote for the Bail out the stupid bankers act. That is conservative.
