Local author Paul Roberts in his book, The End of Food, suggests the end of food -- at least as we know it -- is on the horizon. After decades of increased crop production and declining levels of hunger, Roberts says, increases in food borne illnesses, rising petroleum prices, and the cost of staple foods like rice, corn and wheat signal a breakdown in our global food system. What do you think? Is the era of cheap and plentiful food about to end? How concerned are you about the food you eat?

The Liberals are doing all they can to make life miserable for everyone, that way they will be dependent on Government.
We Cant Drill for More Oil thanx to the Environmentalists, The Doom & Gloomers have been predicting Famine and running out of Oil since the 50's. If the liberals have their way, it might happen.
For those that say we can't drill our way out of this,
We Can't just HOPE our way out of this either.
Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less
http://americansolutions.com
I HOPE we are moving past food and crude the way we have grown to know it in my lifetime. I have made a habit of driving little (50,000 mi in 8 years),eating local foods and living much more sustainably than I have in 50 years.
I HOPE that the increased cost of staples and gasoline allow us to find new ways to move people and freight as well as feed the masses here and around the world. Obesity in this country is a direct result of what started in the 1960's...and I loved those processed wheat and surgary cereals!!
I just HOPE that the environment will calm down long enough for us to re-tool farming and give some relief to those that fight the destruction of their communities with flood, wind and fire.
I just HOPE that those who are in the gas business will re-tool distribution and those in the transportation/energy business will re-tool to help us not squander the resource. Canada is our primary source of fuel. Canadians see the need to supply North America as more important than supplying China. We have enough fields so we do not have to drill more (for now) but somewhere along the line the price is being hijacked (since we have plenty available - no lines like in the 1970s). I am therefore NOT concerned about my oil supply.
So we can HOPE to move out of the the way we have lived since the 1950's...and back to more sustainable ways. I am therefore NOT concerned about my food supply. May sound liberal but actually, it is a more conservative approach to life...I will continue to HOPE!
Skok
you personify 'useful idiot'.
drilling isn't going to lower the price of fuel a single penny.
tool.
Yes, of course. Its those dam liberals again. What an idiotic argument. Here's a little "food" for thought. The question of "is this the end of food as we know it?' was exactly what the hot topic of discussion was in the early 1930's during the dustbowl disaster in the midwest.
It wasn't exactly a global economy back then either..
Oh yes, one other thing that we can do to help the food situtation in this country. Eat less. The fat overweight American is alive and sort of well and still addicted to McDonalds. Remember this is the only country in the world where the poor and economically disadvantaged (or whatever you wish to refer to them as) are generally fat. Go figure. America needs to cut buck on it oil and its food consumption as well.
First, "the end of food" is rather different then "the end of food -- at least as we know it -- is on the horizon". This is all macro economics, the increase in the cost of energy has an -incremental- effect on the cost of food production. So, barring a worldwide economic depression, we will see -incremental- increases in the cost of food (energy is one, and only one component of the cost of food). So, we have to pay 10% or 20% more for rice. This may be a problem elsewhere but very few people in the US will see significantly fewer calories on their tables because of that.
This is just what the Marxist socialists want, to destroy the free market economy and give all power to the "state", who of course know what's best for the "masses". Prosperity is a dirty word to them, unless it's THEIRS. The "food police" want to ban anything they don't consider "healthy" and turn us all into vegetarians. Everything still boils down to the cost of oil, which is used extensively in food production and shipment. Ironically, it has been our own desire to buy cheaper goods at discount stores that has raised the standard of living in former third-world countries like China and India, resulting in a much greater demand for oil (hence the higher prices). Combined with our inaction for the past 35 years to come up with a viable energy plan, we actually did it to OURSELVES!
We have the food fascists trying to tell us what to eat and we have the Seattle City fascists trying to shove a 20 cent per shopping bag fee on the citizens, enough of this fascist tax int he name of the Goddess Maya bull shit!!
Shopping bag fees are a good idea. Its disgusting how many of those little bags are laying around our yards and the sides of streets. Come to think of it, just banning them would be better.
Some government oversight is a good idea when it comes to environment. Remember lead paint, leaded gas, ddt, asbestos, second hand smoke? Without appropriate laws we'd still have lead in our gas and be paying more to pump gas without lead.
Technological advances are great and good for business, but business is slow to take steps to protect peoples health from those technologies when it means loosing money in the short run. Thats where government needs to step in and stick up for people and pass laws that keep technology in check, even if it does mean loosing some money in the short run.
I think the hope (ie you are looking forward to it) is going to backfire. You say that less cheap food means people will start to eat less? Pfft. Most likely it will only cause a rise in the price of FRUITS AND VEGETABLES that are grown in the US and Canada. It is true - the poorer people are, the fatter they are. Because fattening products are less expensive. People are going back to eating bad foods because they can no longer afford organic, or veggies anymore.
I don't see any profit dent in McDonald's quarterly. No sign that they are going to get rid of their Dollar Menu anytime soon.
When you tax people you are only hurting them. Change, in most cases, should come through social pressures and not through the government. People rarely look at the unintended effects of government "help."
What's wrong with using biodegradable paper for grocery bags? I can understand wanting to limit the use of plastic, but why do they want to push us into carrying around our own fabric bags? Where is the common sense here? Also, stop attacking McDonald's. They have introduced many healthier alternatives. At some point, people need to stop blaming others for their mistakes and take responsibility for their own choices, instead of allowing government to do it for them! What has happened to self-reliance in this country?
i think i can sum it up thusly........
The sky is fallin'! The sky is fallin'!
Help! Help!
The sky's fallin'!

For those who think drilling on our shorelines will decrease our spending....., think again. How long to you expect it will take to build the oil rigs and set up for production?????? How will it effect and affect the ecosystems which surround it????? Be a THINKER....! Don't choose the labels of Liberal or Conservative..., that is what the makers of the rat box want you to do!!! Think for yourself. Use a little bit of common sense. The best things in life are sustainable and without consequences to the ecosystem. We can be intelligent beings, if we put our emotions aside for the thought process. Save the emotions for home! This is not "my idea is better than yours", this is the survival of the planet and the species which live on it (humans included).
Wake up to the real reality and leave your petty differences aside... Do your homework too!!! Knowledge is power.
Drilling is a bad idea if you look at the scientific data and the consequences of continuing on our current path.
