« United Airlines to charge $25 for that bag. Fair? |Main| EXCLUSIVE: Republicans admit caucus mistakes »
At the caucuses held at Catharine Blaine School in Seattle, Obama was winning each precinct by that two-to-one margin. A few hours later, it became clear that it was the same story across the state. Obama supporters admit, they were surprised by that margin. Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels told me, he sees it as a "movement" that won't easily be stopped. And yet, in the war for delegates, Obama and Clinton remain fairly close. Does Washington's caucus outcome send a message? On the Republican side, everyone expected John McCain might not perform that well in a caucus. McCain, who has appealed to moderates and independent, would not benefit from party faithful who tend to participate in caucuses. That said, for McCain to be so close to Huckabee and Paul supporters suggests the Republican base in Washington state isn't on his bandwagon just yet. In fact, at his rally Friday, a lot of people in the audience did not consider themselves McCain supporters; they were still evaluating the candidate to see if they wanted to get on board. Can McCain get conservatives in his camp by this fall? Will this summer erase the current tensions within the Republican party? Finally, if you have any thoughts on your caucus experience, do share them. At Magnolia, the organizer asked how many first-time caucus-goers there were in the room and two-thirds of the people raised their hands. Quite a different experience for quite a few folks. 21 Comments |

The only candidate worthy of my vote is Alan Keyes. All other candidates will do everything in their power to destroy our Constitution, bankrupt the country, ensure terrorist's attack us again and again, and make sure millions upon millions more illegal alien criminals cross our borders.
Get rid of the caucus, save the Primary. Let everyone's vote count. While we're at it, get rid of delegates too. Every person in America should have a vote not just a choice few, who can go any direction they want to. Let all the people chose their candidate.
The caucus system is as antiquated as the Electorial vole is. Paries have entirely too much control over our process. They just don't care about the voter. I am a long time voting Republican who some times gets really irritated with the process and the lack of courage of the elected officials at all levels. They too do not care about us they only think about getting re-elected. All anyone has to do is look back to 1994 abd 1995 for proof. Jim Black
The comment I tried to send was rejected because the ID you asked me to type in was incorrectly given. It was so dark I was unable to read it correctly and what I had written had disappeared.
This is as bad as voting at the polls is someone else writing for me at your "CAUCUS"?
I don't know how you can ask a question like "who you gonna vote for" when the end result so far has been no more informative or enlightening than a sporting event. Look at your own headlines. Winners/losers and injury's. Its too bad too that good candidates with aspirations and tenacity like Obama, and street savvy like Clinton and McCain can't just hook it all up for the good of the people. Yeah I know...dream on.. No, its all about them. The power. They're smart people these candidates. They know that if they dress the campaign up to appear like an NFL playoff game, people will participate. So will the news media. If Hitler or Saadam came back from the dead and ran on the Republican or Democratic ticket, there's voters who would cast a vote for them, just cuz.. Party loyalty without basis. Thats how in the dark so many of the people in this country have become. This election is a big one. Who ever is elected, they better be good.
I am going to the county caucus as a Clinton delegate but no matter who gets the nomination I will support them. I have definite reasons for supporting her but either way I don't want the other side to win.
My caucus experience was that almost everyone who attended already had their minds made up about the candidates. There was no "debate." A handful of people gave short stump speeches about their candidates, but it did not change anyone's mind. Many voters do not attend the caucus process because they do not understand what is required of them at the caucus, or believe it may be too complicated. This is why the caucus results are not a true reflection of how the overall population will vote in an election. I think it is a process that allows party faithfuls to come out and promote his or her candidate. It is also great fun to get together with neighbors with some pretty strong opinions about who is the better candidate. The reason Obama does better in the caucuses and Hillary does better in the primary voting? Hillary does better in primary elections because her support comes from a larger number of voters who will participate in primaries and will vote on election day but are less likely to attend a political event or caucus. Obama does better in caucuses because he has inspires a core group of people who are motivated to attend a political event or a caucus. The excitement is palpable, but may not be a true reflection of how a candidate will do on an election day.
I have a feeling that alot of people are voting for Obama because of endorsements by
power leaders like Oprah Winfey who support, and are campaigning for, him. I think it is
irresponsible of her, and maybe others, because there are people voting who have not made an informed
decision but are jumping on the bandwagon; lemmings to the sea. People are swooning
over Obama,( don't read me wrong; I like Obama too) who does NOT have the expertise of Clinton and her 35 years of service and
experience. PLEASE everyone. Stop. Think. We need a leader at the helm who will face
some extremely important and challenging situations on day one.
Hillary Clinton is that
leader.
I agree with ledog3 to many people vote for a particular party then a candidate. Even if some one is Republican or Democrat and every one in the particular party where the wrest cannonades ever and the other party had better candidate's people world vote for the there party and not the better candidate. I am more of a Democrat the a Republican but if a Republican candidate was better then all of the Democratic candidate's I would choose the Republican.
The caucus results did not reflect that virtually no serious debates of substance occurred during the process. That is, to put it cordially, for many people, it was simply a race or gender issue. The real question is why should the Democratic political insiders conclude that the Democratic Presidential Primary is meaningless?
I think people are for Obama sensing blood. They detect a winner, and if, they want change they're going for that. Certainly in Florida and California; not to mention New York.
Its who CAN "win"? A question of straight talk at this point w/Guiliani. (Ron Paul/Huckabee set-asides)
I think the whole election system needs to be reformed. As it now stands, the candidates don't each have an equal shot due to financial restraints, etc. I think that during the primary process, no advertising should be allowed. Instead, there should be a series of three nationally televised debates over the course of a month, followed by each candidate having 15-30 minutes to give a nationally televised speech explaining to the public why they are the better candidate. During this month, each voter should independently research the voting records and history of their candidates without the ads and phone calls which tend to distort, take out of context, and slam the opponents. After this one month process, all voters should go to the polls on the same day for a national primary. This way nobody gets a "momentum" from a state that may or may not reflect the political climate of the other states. After this process, the winners should be declared that party's nominee, and can then campaign and advertise to their hearts content until the November election. This way, all candidates start on a level playing field, and since it would be in the voters best interest, I believe our tax dollars should pay for the primary process. I'm sure it would be much cheaper than what is going on now.
To say the Washington State Election Process is confused is an understatement to say the least. In talking the Secretary of State's office today, I was told that Sam Reed had released press report yesterday to clarify the the State primary election is not over and should not have been declared so by the media. The republican side has 51% of the delegates to be determined by the paper ballots which will be counted on 2/19. I was surprised that you did not explain this better if at all.
Many people are planning on not voting because of the media blitz to declare it over.
Huckabee in primary
McCain in Presidential.
Socialism is not for me
PLEASE, Mr. Mak, explain to me where all the caucus votes went! It was widely reported that about 200,000 of us showed up. Why did CNN and NWCN give it to Barack with only 30,000 votes showing on those two stations? The (Tacoma) News Tribune has not reported any grand totals. Do you have the info???
Bravo for the Joyce letter. Yes, something like this needs to be done.
This new caucus process is a circus; The people who thought they were voing Democrat by their ballot, only to be told it is meaningless, must be outraged! To not have a say in the voting process, to realize your vote didn't count is the biggest travesty of all.
Good Morning Robert Mak
I am a delegate for Hillary Clinton. I think she is the one that will restore respect to our democratic party and to America. I still believe experience counts. Unfortunately, the Good Old Boy's are still alive and well in this country. I have never seen how alive until I watched FOX News, MSNBC and now CNN. I thought news was reported the way it happened not followed by sacastic remarks against the woman candidate running for President of the United States. I see no respect for Hillary and such enthusiasm for B.O. I wish they could just report the news without their own personal feelings. I respect King 5, you, Robert, for reporting on both sides of issues and still remaining professional.God Bless America.
The above comment from the Hillary delegate is what scares the hell out of me about many of the American Voters. Look, there always has been and always will be a "good ol' boys" group in D.C. Girls are in that club too by the way.
Politics first order of business is power and those groups are the result of that. Power does not always mean a dictatorship, it means that an office holder will do what they need to do to be listened to. Ask any newly elected candidate and they'll tell you that they spend their first year in office holding elevator doors open for office holders who aren't classified as newbie. Second, news is NOT reported the way it happens, certainly not during an election year. That kind of reporting is seen on those blooper tapes. Wake up. News can be dull and often just not informative. Newsroom editors dress it up to accomplish otherwise. The Fox stations are a clear result of that kind of showbiz. Local and national news is edited and re-reported to capture an audience which translates into rateings. TV and other media need those rateings to show advertisers like Anhauser Busch and Sleep Country USA and then sell air time to stay alive in a medium that has lost so much of its credibility and respect at all levels. Hillary may make a damn fine President, so might Obama, hell maybe even McCain. That "change" word means more to people now than it ever has in modern history. I hope they follow through on it. Robert Mack is the best at what he does. KING is fortunate to have him. I just wish he'd snarl a bit more at some of those political talking heads he interviews.
I would like to remind everyone in the Mukilteo school district that there are 2 issues on he back side of your ballots. Please support our schools
Interesting on how this state has hi-jacked the voting process to make you choose a party instead of a person. In which, you don't count if you don't want to choose socialism over freedom. What ever happened to "every vote counts"? I can see why the younger people are confused about the election process.
Contrary to popular belief the primary has no purpose except to allow party members to choose their convention delegates. That's why you must show a party preference in order to participate. People who have no preference, or are independents, have no business participating in a primary. It simply doesn't apply to them. It is solely for the purpose of choosing party candidates. People who object to that system, or who want to vote for someone outside their party, have the general election in November for that purpose.
Sometimes, in order to save money, other entities piggy-back on a primary election, as the school districts are doing this year. Actually, that creates two separate elections on one ballot: a school bond/levy election and a political party primary election. This year if you didn't choose a party preference on your mail-in ballot it won't be counted for the party primary election but will be counted for the school election.
