Democrats, everywhere: where'd the Republicans go?

It's Democrats everywhere you turn--in the state house, the state senate, and in the governor's mansion. So what's happening? Is this really good news for Democrats? And where'd the Republicans go? Can Dino Rossi lead a comeback?

It's the raw numbers that persuaded us to ask about the health of the state Republican party. Consider this: In the state house, it's 63 Democrats to 35 Republicans (actually, one Republican is more of an independent so you might call it 34 Republicans); In the state senate, it's 32 to 17. In 1995, our state's Congressional delegation had 7 Republicans, 2 Republicans. Today, it's 3 Republicans, 6 Democrats.

Republicans say, they need to do a better job recruiting good candidates. But how does the party encourage a quality candidate to run in this environment? What will it take to turn the party around?

And as for the Democrats, is there a danger having too big a majority? Expect this battle to be played out in fall in the suburbs of Seattle--where traditionally conservative districtcs have been turning Democratic. What are your early thoughts on Dave Reichert vs. Darcy Burner, or Christine Gregoire vs. Dino Rossi?

Comments

my Vote goes to all the orginal winners, Dave Reichert and Dino rossi, Gregoire is a joke, shes going to run everyone in seattle to poverty. how does a politician screw up so bad that our economy is still growing but yet the poverty level is at an all time high...........what a question.........

It's the residents of the state of Washington that are paying the price! With the 33% increase spending/taxes brought on by Gregoire and the Dems I'm going to have to move to Mexico to stretch a $. I can't afford to live in this state anymore! We don't all work for MICROSOFT Gregoire!!!

The fact is that it takes a lot more courage to be a Republican. Republicans believe in individual responsibility, individual accomplishment, competition, private enterprise, fewer and less expensive government givaways and fighting for our freedom. Democrats do not believe in these same things.

I support Gregoire. She's handled the state in a professional manner and hasn't gone overboard in her spending desires. Rossi offers me nothing better, particularly with such a Democrat majority in both houses.

Western Washington has some real heavy numbers of voters when it comes to Dems vs. Reps. If you go out farther from Seattle you will see a few more conservative voters but until you travel east of the Cascades the majority are dems. That being said...I know more who vote with their mind vs. a party - unless you lived during the depression then you think that Dems are GOD and that they all are like Roosevelt (at least if you are my grandfather and his friends). In my voting life time the two dems who have run this country have been total idiots and embarrassments in thier behavior and their head in the sand international politics.
I will vote for Rossi for sure - did it before and will do it again...and there will be no dem voting for president on my ballot - they can't even decide what they want to stand for this late in the game.

I have been mostly very impressed with Christine Gregoire. She is a leader in the best sense. All these totally untrue comments from uninformed Republicans, those who see politics as a team sport and not something that matters, is classic electioneering babble. They really don't care about me or my familty or our state. Rossi is the opposite of Gregoire. He never makes measurable statements, just vague statements with a "we'll have to see" tacked on to the end. He is the standard politician whereas Gregoire is one of those once or twice in a lifetime leaders.

my vote goes to dino rossi
we need change in terms of the political climate in our state
and rossi might be the right person to handle problems we're stuck in holes with
like transportation [including the monorail] , the sonics, and even the husky stadium remodel,

Here in northern Whidbey Island, Republicans are strong. Reportedly, their campaign pitch to unseat Democratic Senator Mary Margaret Haugen will be the high property taxes and the ferry debacle.

We think that it is unfair and unjust to accuse Senator Haugen for the ferry debacle as though she had a malevolent hand in the abrubt and inconsiderate way the new Secretary of Transportation, Paula Hammond, decided to jerk ferries out of service. Responsible action was needed, but it could have been handled with more consideration and less disruption.

Zooming property taxes are a big concern to many of us. However, we think that Republican Senator Don Benton from the Vancouver area has the best approach to that by limiting the increase in assessments. It is an idea we've seen proposed on websites PRIORCLAIM.com and PREDICTABLETAX.com.

I wish Robert Mak had challenged Mr. Rossi on his very evasive answers. He walked around every question, thus, not answering with any substance. Regarding transportation in our state; everyone is using it, but unfortunately, no one is willing to pay. If this process continues, the costs escalate and it's a no-win situation. Mr. Rossi would implement tax cuts on the back of social programs, the poor and the middle class. What is his plan for education in this state? The State of Washington ranks 46th in class size on a national level. In order to rectify this, the state would have to hire 11,000 new teachers to get us to the national average. Good schools translate to good communities, which drives the economy. Governor Gregoire is tireless in trying to achieve this. Education is a priority to her. The past mentality of education has to change. We need smaller class sizes, and more professional training. This will enable teachers to stay in the profession instead of leaving it or moving out of state for better pay and conditions. Governor Gregoire has done an exceptional job running this state. She is bright, honest and above everything, she is fair. She certainly deserves to be reelected in 2008.

I am tired of Gregoire, she hasTO GO. She cheated to get elected in the first place. I can not stand her.

While we have a surplus, we have ferry boats that have not been maintained even though there was money earmarked. The 11th St. bridge in Tacoma has been closed down, again due to lack of maintenance. Money was there but state and city officials couldn't agree on what do do. DSHS and Dept. of Corrections is in a state of chaos leaving citizens at risk. Dept. of Transportation has admitted that congestion is not at the top of their "to do" list. Now Gregoire wants to get "tough" on drunk drivers by having checkpoints. She will be disrupting law abiding citizens. Law makers need to get tougher on drunk drivers espcially repeat offenders. Republicans can't win because King County is the largest county with a overwhelming number of democrats and it is the last county to count votes and always seems to find "lost" votes. I will vote for Rossi again.

I voted for Governor Gregoire, 30 days after she came into office I realized I had made a terrible mistake. Nothing has changed my mind since then. The two major problems in Washington for me are crime and traffic. Both of which to me are out of control. At this point there is nothing she can say that would change my mind. I don't need to be told what kind of life I live, I already know. I am not willing to let Washington become a Socialist state. I will vote for anyone that runs against her. Rossi seems to have a very clear understanding on what is happening in this state. I wish I had paid more attention. This is the last time I will vote for a women because I am a women. I hope the Hillary voters are not wear glasses....

I am sorry to say I made that mistake once but NEVER again. Our Govrnor Gregoire upon taking office made sure she was in with the Legislature in Olympia by getting them and herself a payraise.(Note: this was the first but not the last)When I-695 was voted on and passed by the majority vote she tried through the Coourts to get this overturned as unconstitutional but the Legilature backed off on this when so many voters voiced their diapproval. She got a 9c a gal State gas tax added to our already high fuel tax and also added a weight tax on our vehicles. When consumers were struggling with high gas prices many State Governors waived a part of their State fuel tax in an effort to help the consumer. When asked IF she would follow suit she said she would NOT and at around this time, her and the politicians in Olympia enacted their second pay raise.I know this is all public record and can be verified so I ask you to check for yourself. I am convinced she does not have the taxpayers best interest in mind, for this I apologize for having wasted my vote the first time. I am going to MAKE sure next election I don't make that mistake again. As far as the Olympia politicians who have gone along with this fleecing of the taxpayer I would be worried about your chances for re-election. VERY WORRIED.It is time the power of the vote returns to the people.

The question Republicans should be asking the voters is:
Can you afford to vote democratic? There's a reason Washington Sate "especially King County" is one of the highest cost of living places in the country. With the price of everything going up,up,up because of the cost of oil and taxes, people need to ask themselves do I need to change my ways? "Change the party they vote for" just as they would if they had something else that was draining their family budget.

Sleazy Rossi's campaign is pathetic.

What would I cut out of the budget? "That's not a valid question."

How money for children's health care and teacher salaries like you did last time?

Transportation: I hate the democrats' plan. I don't have a plan.

520 Bridge: Eight lanes baby! I don't know how to pay for it.

When I was elected in 1974 to my one and only term in the State House of Representatives, I joined just over 30 Republicans. It took Democrat scandals and over reaching by the Democrat majority to eventually put Republicans in the majority. I see the super majority Democrats heading in the same direction at least on the over reaching on taxes and nanny stae legislation. As to Fred Jarrett and Rodney Tom, please see my blog http://clearfogblog.wordpress.com/2007/12/15/fred-jarrett-rodney-tom-turncoats-or-practical-politicians/

Was sort of on the fence until I saw Rossi on Robert Mak's show. I think the word is spelled: L-O-S-E-R. He had an opportunity to spell out how he would run Washington government differently. He hedged. He is a politician. Why would I vote for him? Pathetic. The reason that the Republican party is tanking in Washington is the only thing they believe in is corporate giveaways (east of the lake) blaming others for the problems we are all guilty of and that really scary stuff......gay marriage! Gimme a break.

One focus of this years campaigns isnt the actual campaigns themselves. Its the news reporting of those candidates. I like Robert Mack and several political "corrospondents" in his field of broadcasting. The problem is that this time of year they are timid and toooo tooo carful not to upset a candidate with hard questions or challanging them on some issue or point that has been made. If Robert Mack gets the image of being hard ass and uncomfortable to sit with for an hour on camera, then no candidate is going to return his phone calls. Its commercial television and that means he has to sell somthing or his show gets canned. The polite rule of thumb is don't deficate where you eat. I wish the braodcast news media would demonstrate some nerve they're going to show us any this year. Its easier and more cost effective to make up the news than report it. We're going to find out everything we need to know about any of the candidates after they get elected to office and not before. Democrat or Republican.

People in the SEA-TAC-OLY corridor are of the Entitlement mentality.

all Seattle-lites want to do is smoke their pot/meth/coc collect Welfare and bitch how horrible their life is.

Conservatism is hard to sell to Lazy people. Conservatism believes in personal accountability. . .self reliance. . .rugged individualism. . .something democrats shun.

Socialism has Failed every time it has been tried.

And Contrary to King5 MisConception. . . .Conservatives like clean Air and Water also, We just draw the line at repealing our Private Property Rights. . .Somethinng Democrats Dont concern themselves with as the majority of democrats rent.

4 hours later. . . id like to ad that demmocrats look to someone ELSE to solve their problems. . . .something thats's easy to cling on to.

republicans ask everyone to look at how they 'themselves" can save themselves. . . .something seattle-lites are too fragile to contemplate

remove the chains of governmment. . .Fed, State, local, Income. . . and I could make a fortune.

governement regulation is a detriment, not a God send. .. . .also Democrats dont believe in God. . . .so i should thank King Kong when taxes are lifted.

Republicans have lost their seats because voters have lost their faith in the ability to govern. Dino Rossi's interview was a fine example. They have abandoned the core principles that they once represented (individual responsibility, smaller government) and replaced it with piety (claiming to speak for God), propensity to attack instead of explain (as in the case of their most of their mouthpieces - KVI, KTTH, Fox, etc), and ultimately have a devotion to control peoples' lives instead of govern for the common good. Democrats will suffer the same fate if they push any agenda too far; that's why it's called "govern"-ment. Chris Gregoire has been mindful of the will of the voters in this regard. Your mention of an "independent" in the House must refer to Tom Campbell (R-Roy) who is ostracized by his own party and embraced by the D's on their issues, but survives in the district because of his focus on "good government". State Sen. Marilyn Rasmussen endures the same treatment, but to a lesser extent, for the same reasons. The other representative in the district is virtually useless due to ideological rigidity, piety, and claims of blame to the majority - the very reasons there's only 30 of his kind in the House.

Watching Robert's interview about the 520 bridge, I can't helped not to comparing it to the bridge that was built five years ago between Denmark and Sweden.
The Oresund Bridge cost was under 1 billion dollar, and if you ever seen it, you could easily tell that it is for times the bridge for one fourth of the price proposed for the 520 bridge! We might be able to get those guys to come over here and build our bridge, put them all up in the Olympic hotel, save a bunch of money, from the hotel tax, so we can help build a stadium for the UW - or something.

I will always remember a Republican - as it stands for Roman arrogance. And now, there is no more wealth, and they have no plan since now its all been squandered. So watch gold, and that will tell you the economy is out of control. This will be a recession like you've never lived before. Small minds who believe in the laws of small numbers. Who's faith is that? Republicans created this filth, now they will live in it. Our schools are shameful, this will be a year like no other.

Really, Arie? Republicans are responsible for the condition of our state? When's the last time the Republican party held a majority in the state legislature? When's the last time a presidential election didn't paint Washington blue? Things continue to go down the toilet in Washington, and we keep electing Democrats to "represent" us. Coincidence? I think not.

Rossi's got a point -- the problem is too many of Washington's voters are too dense to comprehend that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting the result to change.

Republicans are waiting in the wings to watch the Governor run this state into the ground. She has raised more taxes, spent more money, and produced nothing for any of it. The heirarchy of the government has continued to grow, she has not streamlined services with more workers to provide the services, but increased upper management at the cost of the front-line workers. She has put her cronies in positions of power, so they can all vote together. Rossi may not have all of the answers, but this State could not be worse off with him in office, than what "Christine" has done to this state.
By the way, when the floods hit Lewis County, was she working in the mud with the rest of us? Or was she flying around in a helicopter "checking it out" and looking very political? I don't remember seeing her shovel one ounce of mud or move one ruined piece of furniture. Let's get people back into power that will actually get their hands dirty with mud, not with our tax money.

The Democrats or progressives or leftists or socialists or whatever they choose to call themselves today should have no problem maintaining their majority in Washingon government. Not because they represent all the citizens of the State, but because they represent the citizens of Seattle, dead or alive. Sorry, that last statement makes me sound like a Democrat. Actually, I vote for the person that I think will best represent my family's well being, regardless of party. Currently that doesn't correspond to anything the Dems are preaching. Higher taxes for social programs and "cut and run foreign policy" is not where I am. Thanks for the opportunity for an input. Frank R

Democrats would like this country to be heading the same direction as venezuela. High taxes, government rule and the rich supporting the poor that way nobody has any reason to work any more. The dems model society could never sustain itself. The working people have to wake up and realize this and QUIT VOTING FOR DEMOCRAPS.
