I am happy for the most part of the results of the election. however, Tim Eyman's measures even from the past have hurt all of us. Old news 35 dollar car tabs. Guess, what! As a result of that, many social programs to help the needy were cut off, aid to famlies cut way back, and for what? 35 dollar tabs? Think again!
NO ONE has 35 dollar tabs NO ONE.
SO in essence, we vote for 35 dollar tabs, still pay 50-80, and NO programs to help the poor, the disabled.
THAT STINKS!
( Thanks washington state)
Know the differance between Washington state
and washington DC....
*not much*
Your Democratic and Republican consultants were way off on the predictions on how voters would vote. Just shows you how intuned the political parties are with the voters. Last night's election was indeed a referendom about Taxes, make no mystake about it.
I was most disappointed to hear your Democratic consultant's analysis last night that Prop 1 was going down to defeat because the voters were "confused." I can assure you that I am not at all confused about the matter. Perhaps you might find a less confused analyst before the next election.
It was MORE than a vote on taxes, it was a vote of no confidence in the Washington State political system, and anyone who doesn't understand that is deluding themself.
People are tired of needed improvements to the ROADS being held hostage to Mass Transit and bicycle zealots.
People are tired of one-third of bills in Olympia being cynically labeled "Emergency" legislation to get around our CONSTITUTIONALLY GUARANTEED right of referendum for such things as multi-year increases in fuel taxes and (can you believe...) an EMERGENCY STADIUM?
People are sick and tired of legislators pandering to their constituencies to the detriment of the state as a whole.
THAT'S WHY 960 passed, the voters telling Olympia YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF OUR TRUST.
The elected representatives have lost the trust of the electorate as a whole, and until they somehow EARN it back, gridlock seems preferable to being taken in the WRONG direction.

No one does because after the legislature instituted them (wasn't Eyman's doing, that initiative got thrown out by the courts. It was the DEMOCRATIC Legislature that did that, with the concurrence of Dem Gov Gary Locke.
But then the immediately reneged on that, demonstrating once again that the Washington STATE LEGISLATURE IS UNWORTHY OF OUR TRUST.
Tim Eyman is a pig. I wish he could be deported to another state.
What a sad state our schools are in. How disappaointing that our population can't see the forest through the trees. Great schools help all of us. Not only for the obvious reasons as in our kids' education, but also in terms of the values of our houses and communities. What bigger investment do we have in our lives besides our homes??? Quality schools make our homes more valuable, period! Wake up people and start voting for our schools, not against them.
I guess I am done with politics. I was taught (and learned) that in order for our society to be successful, we had to make certain choices, that while somewhat distasteful to us as individuals, benefited us as a whole. I still try to do this; but nobody else does. The results show me how selfish and self-centered our population has become. Someday all this is going to come back and bite them in the butt. If we don't pay now we sure will later.
Whoa people. Try to remember the price of gas, devaluation of homes, folks with ARM's going thru the roof, prices on everything going up. There are a whole lot of service industry personnel that make less than $20 per hour, trying to support a family and just get by. WASL exams being dumbed down, car licenses continually increasing, all fees have been going up. The rainy day fund has been tried two or three times in the past and spent on none emergency items that Olympia wanted. Sixty-two percent believe, and rightly so, that the last road improvement levy passed has been a rip off. With Olympia's performance I wouldn't expect any tax increases will fly. Perhaps if the government wants more money, reduce taxes and fees seems to work every where else it has been tried.
Your Dem. analyst on Prop one is totally (unsurprisingly) out to lunch. Prop 1 failed because we are sick and tired of paying taxes that DON'T fix anything. Phase one of light rail (which I also voted against) is overbudget and behind schedule, and there is NO accountablity.
the Dem. Politicans think the only way to fix a problem is to throw money at it, with no accountablillty. Well, welcome to reality. BUDGET like the rest of us do. MAKE CHOICES where you spend your money, like the rest of us do. CUT THINGS OUT (you can't afford everything), like the rest of us have to. The Washington taxpayer is NOT a bottomless pit of revenue. THAT was the message voters sent. Pity the Politico's didn't hear it, only "the voter's were confused". Umm, No, we weren't. We understood perfectly.
Dino Rossi for 2008!!!
i concur with Chris & Kris
Typical to hear the Socialists say Im to stupid to know i should fork over my hard earned money to them.
It's Our money. Not the governments. The government does NOT give Free Health Care
I provide it for them.
Why do all "consultants" and "experts" ignore the obvious about the defeated roads and transit issue. In my opinion had roads been the only beneficiary of prop 1 it would have passed.
Rapid transit in the form of Sound Transit, Sounder Train and light rail have been and continue to be a horrendous money pit. Management of these systems has NO public accountability.
The rapid transit corridor serves a very limited passenger base. The cost to transport each of these passengers is obscene. Most commuters in the tri-county area have no access to rapid transit.
Add enough road capacity and allow me to excercise my best judgement on the most economical way to commute.
So many people were convinced the simple majority measure was over. I can forgive the print media, I suppose, but I expected more from Robert Mak. Even this morning's story reported on info which was at 62% votes in. Check it now. Snohomish County didn't update on the Sec of State's site, but they did on their own. This measure isn't done yet!
The reason 67 did not pass is very simple. First, we have already paid for the improvements over and over again it was the state that did not manage or prioritize how to spend money. Like the lotto money "paying for building schools and education"..HUH? I had to vote for another tax increase in Snohomish to build more schools because we are desparate but yet the state charges sales tax on the materials we buy and "matching funds"? WHAT A JOKE!
My point is here in Snohomish County along the Hwy 9 & Hwy 2 corridors the communities are choked off from safely exiting if there is a disaster, flood or earthquake and choked off from making revenue to enhance our standard of living including parks and so forth because nobody can get to us or leave without making it an 8 hour day!
The state truthfully has no real strategy. It has consituencies. Visualize someone sweeping in a large room moving from one spot to another here and there looking busy but never really getting the entire room clean.
Welcome to the State of Washington. I am fifty years old and plans over 40 years ago have not yet been implimented. Hey, we have stop lights on SR 9 so traffic now can really back up for miles but HEY, we have a turn lane now...another bone....another fragmented approach to our region. This happens all over the state not just here so if you have any doubts why 67 failed, the gov't needs to look in the mirror because they still don't get it.
By the way, who votes for these people anyway? Same old faces talking about issues and making the hot topic of the day a "priority" until the next election cycle.
As a life long resident I think the state would do well not to take after the California model to be all things to all people and take care of the basics then we can look at the other issues at hand in the priority it deserves if you can follow that logic.
You cannot pass anything that says give us your money and we will "do something" but you are taking a chance that your community will not see any tangible benefit and that is the bottom line.
Thinking locally, the election can be pretty well summed up - - - "Welcome to California, Washington style". Looking forward to the national election and where the politicos of all parties are taking us - - - "Welcome to the German pre-WWII monetary crisis, American style". But then, the inane never learn and history does repeat itself again and again. Seems as if the more we credit ourselves for being fresh thinkers, the more we follow ruts established long ago. Likely the only real winners are those still alive who supported the 1928 Socialist Party Platform.
