Velazquez is running against Bruce Harrell for the open council seat being vacated by Peter Steinbrueck. One has to wonder, what's going on this year? Velazquez was arrested at 11:30 Wednesday night and cited with DUI. Last week, City Councilman Richard McIver was in court for domestic violence charges, allegedly related to alcohol. Of course, there's King County Councilwoman Jane Hague who's contesting her DUI charges from earlier this year. Here's the statement from the Seattle Police Department on Velazquez's arrest: Harrell and Velazquez recently debated on KING 5 News Up Front. It'll be very interesting to see on election night, how voters respond to Velazquez and Hague (McIver's not up for re-election this year). How does a DUI affect your opinion of a candidate? 23 Comments |

I am so sick and tired of these people that are trying to find excuses for their behaviour. Why should we forgive them, they are not kids, they know what they are doing. DUI is DUI. and it should not be any different than DUI for a teenager, she should not get elected, period. I'm just tired of this. what if she's an alcoholic?
I agree with the previous post.
The candidate's forum she was in ended at 8:00PM She was arrested at 11:30PM. 3 1/2 hours for dinner? Hmmm. She probasbly had a little more than two drinks.
Anyway, a cadidate is usually at their best before an election, even in her own wrods, this was a "bad judgement call" So if this is her best behavior, I wonder what she will be like as an elected official after the heat of the election is over with. I don't think I want to go there. She won't get my vote.
Even though I hate police and think they are sociopaths (yes, I'm a white prof 40yo male, never been arrested) I also despise all forms of hypocracy, and seeing any political candidate, judge, police officer, etc break the law is outrageous. Lock em up and throw away the key.
None of these candidates are really all that great anyway. There was a story that alleges that Venus is possibly racist by saying that the public owes the Latino community by electing her. What does her physical and genetic makeup have to do with her ability to run a city??? My vote is going to be a write-in for...my cat who is far smarter than any of these schmoes.
Sure hope she does not get elected as I will not be voting for her at all. I agree with the previous post DUI is DUI no excuses I have had my life turned upside down by a guy that decided he was able to drive after drinking so much luckily he didn't kill me but now I am unable to do things I really enjoy because of what he did. This lady is running for city council she should be obeying the laws and setting examples for others to follow.
Since when do we need political leaders to be infallabile? What is more important is how a human being deals with their mistakes not that human beings make mistakes. Please, lets grow up and stop believing in super-heros and magic.
We finally see the real Venus. Why didn't we know about her tickets and flagrant disregard for the law? Has her husband been getting her tickets dismissed?
The real Venus is also racist and divisive. Just look at this link and see for yourself. This is disqusting.

Down with Venus and up with Bruce who is a true class act.
If she drives drunk, she'll probably be drunk on the job, too.
We don't need a City Councilman like that.
I am not going to vote for her.
She did not make a "mistake" by driving drunk.
She was drunk and drove in that condition on purpose.
Should have called a cab.
Who needs a drunk on the City Council?
Oh, here we go again. At least she didn't spew off profanities at the police and claim they made it all up. I'm not voting for her, we can find somebody else.
The typical reaction from a drunk when accused of DUI, "I wasn't drunk".. How arrogant to think she can get away with this. I hope she does go through the election and let the people show the city council what we think of drunk drivers by not voting for her.
If you've ever had someone you love die because of an impaired driver - you would never even consider voting for someone that has such a reckless attitude.
A DUI is not a crime of moral turpitude. For god's sake, most of us have just gotten lucky that we haven't been pulled over after going out for cocktails after work of having wine with dinner at a friend's house. Besides, aren't people innocent until proven guilty any more in this society (Actually sadly rarely does the media ever suggest that). Stop acting so self righteous Seattle.
Wonder why she stalled the officer so long, and then also refused a breath test?
What is she hiding?
seems like a sneaky type if you ask me
I think she should step up and take personal responsibility for her actions. weather she was drunk or not, she needs to step down, and be a public role model advocating that its not OK or acceptable to have just a couple drinks and be driving. No matter if your impared or fine after a couple of drinks it is your responsibility to make right desions.
Yep, she needs to step-up. But she is indigently denying that she did anything wrong. If she only had a 'couple of drinks' then why did she refuse the breath test? For that decision she's going to lose her license for six months no matter what the outcome of her case. Then she'll be able to add to her list of other violations. I think she is running for office in order to have power over those that have cited her for violations in the past. Watch her interview. Listen to her. She's self absorbed. Not good.
What makes Venus any different than any one of the many "I'm sorry I wont do it again" politicians that dis Grace our government? Another example of american politics at it's finest!
Oh thats about par. Hires Bill Bowman (top dui attorney) and pleads not guilty. Can't anybody take responsibility? Again...vote for somebody else!
Come on she shouldn't be on the council; its not the fact of the DUI being so horrible its the fact these people get payed good money for doing next to nothing the least they could do is obey the law!!!
When are people going to understand that the law is Driving Under the INFLUENCE? You don't need to be falling down drunk to kill someone. I buried a child because a person with a .04 BAC made the CHOICE to drive under the influence of alcohol and that guy is in prison for Vehicular Homicide. No way would I vote for a person with an attitude like Velazaquez. No way would I want to put a person like her in the position of being a law maker when they think the law does not pertain to them. Everyone on the road that night is lucky that she didn't kill them, she obviously has no regard for the lives or safety of anyone. It's so simple - If your going to drink, don't drive, If your going to drive, don't drink.
DUI has been so broadened that everyone is guilty of DUI if the Police Officer wants to dig deep enough.
Also, id rather have a rep that has gone through and experienced the ridiculusness and cost of the DUI process
I agree. Sick of Jane Hague? Sick of Richard Pope? Here's my proposal...
