Hague was arrested on June 2nd, but she never told the public. It wasn't until late August that the story got out. And then, Hague's statement made it clear, she has a different version from police about what happened: "I am very sorry that this incident occurred and I take matters of this sort very seriously," she said. "I have always tried to conduct myself in a responsible manner and I am proud of the service I have given to this community over the past twenty years. While there are many questionable aspects to these charges, I respect the court and its processes and under the advice of my attorney I am unable to make any further statements about my case. Like any citizen, I just hope to be treated fairly." Questionable aspects? Here's one: There's a clear difference in stories on how Hague was pulled over. This is what Hague's attorney Douglas Cowan told KING 5's Jane McCarthy: And here's the deputy's version (from his police report): "I told her the reason why I had stopped her and asked her how many drinks she had consumed. Jane replied by telling me that she had only one glass of wine. "While in the backseat, Jane spoke to me in a sarcastic and condecending voice, telling me that I was wasting my time and inquired into 'what other good' I was going to do. Jane said to me, 'this is f------ ridiculous, don't you have rapists to take off the street?' Jane also complained about the cuffs being too tight and being 'f------ painful...' When I transferred custody of Jane to State Patrol Trooper T. Hanson she said 'this is f------ ridiculous, I don't need handcuffs." It appears Hague may contest the arrest and the deputy's version of events. So here's the question. Conventional strategy may be for a politician to say "I'm sorry" and settle the matter quickly. But if Hague indeed believes she was wrongly arrested, should she afforded the benefit of the doubt if she takes the time to challenge the charge in court? Or would you hold her to a different standard as a public official? 26 Comments |

I think Jane Hague should realize that she did something atrocious and step down... or face potential recall. It's obvious this was the real deal that she's an attempted murderer (by driving drunk).
My detailed comments HERE.
Get rid of her, politions think they are above the law. She sounds like a great role model for our youth and I think her use of the english language shows a lot of respect for her community.
The best and only place to decide this is in court. Wether she swore at the officer or had pulled off to rest, wether she was intoxicated or just driving badly, all of that will come out in court.
If she was disrespectful to the officer, some consequence should follow to that. If she was driving drunk, I'd say her constituents will call for the aproppriate action immediately.
She broke the Law and, should be held accountable for her actions. Just like the rest of us.
This is typical of Jane Hague.
1) Years ago she got caught not licensing her dog after it bit a person. She said she forgot and that the dog was not living in King County. Months later the dog bit another person at her house in King Countg...again.
2) Jane tried to hide getting money from the large players in King County when she ran for NACO president. After a year long investigation she was found to have violated the County Ethics Code. That cost the tax payers over $110,000. She was found to be giving additional "access" to the contributors. They gave her over $250,000 and thier is no accounting of what she did with that money.
3) Hitting a metro bus. Jane bullied the bus driver asking him "Don't you know who I am?" and implying that she would get him fired. Despite numerous witnesses including a police officer, Jane denied acting that way and claimed they were out to get her.
4) Now drunk driving. Clearly she lied about her alcohol consumption, and treated the officers in a disrespectful manner.
Jane Hague is an arrogant, corrupt politician who hides like the rat she is when the light of the truth is cast upon her. An idiot in her chair is better than this corrupt terd.
She should be given her day in court. With that said, she blew a .14 on a breathalyzer, that must have been a LARGE glass of wine!
The way she spoke to the officers that were doing their job is not a politician that I would ever want representing me.
If she can lie that easy to police I'm sure she can/will/has lied to her constituents.
If she gets re-elected I guess it would show how ignorant the voting public is.
It shows a basic disrespect for the law, and fellow citizens to drive under the influence of alcohol. How can she do her job with no respect for the law, or respect for her fellow citizens?!? I dont expect people to be perfect, but REALLY!?!
Using legal maneuvering to get out of this ticket should disqualify her. If she admits guilt and pays her penalties she should not be disqualified.
I'd be willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, but I'm less likely to believe that a sober and alert law enforcement officer will not recollect what was said during the traffic stop and sobriety test than a "tired" woman who has been drinking wine. Her alleged sarcasm about the trooper's mom being "proud of him" and slurs at law enforcement are downright offensive. These people, Jane, work VERY hard and put their lives on the line every single day. Frankly, if a person expects to consume alcohol and has no sober or able driver to transport them, HIRE A CAB!
Jane Hague, you have branded yourself as one of those people, like the bit-the-dust Leona Helmsley, who thinks they are "above" the law. Sorry, gal, but you pass gas, burp and turn on the bathroom fan after using it like the rest of us, honey.
I hope that Jane Hague is rightfully found guilty and has to at least take some alcohol education courses and maybe pick up some trash alongside the road in Bellevue.
I love how the *moment* any republican politial figure does *anything* wrong at all everyone is all over them to resign. This is absurd. I have donated to Jane's campaign and I SUPPORT Jane during this period of breaking news. I would have done the same thing had I been pulled over. Yes, drinking and driving is a very serious topic, let's not forget that. I weigh the good with the bad. I weigh the fact that both Jane and her husband do more work for the benefit of children in King County than anyone else I know of and everyday Jane sacrifices her time and energy and family and personal time to work for the citizens of King County. And on that note, I think she's doing a FABULOUS job and I will always support Jane. I know that during this time of breaking news that Jane will handle this appropriately and that's that. I support Jane!
Egad... .14? Yep. If she lied about the "only 1 glass of wine", I tend to disbelieve her on the rest of her story.
I hope the cop has dash-cam video to support his story, and that is made "public" in court. That should be enough to get her public to "unelect" her next time around...
Politicians and all people in leadership roles should be held to a higher standard period. They know what they are getting into when they run for office. They should be made expamples of in order to show the people that nobody in our republic is above any law.
What galls me is the way the public finds out about a June incident on the day after the August primary. Give me a break
Bunny,
I hope most sincerely that you would have precisely the same sentiments about Jane Hague and her wine-tasting adventures plus driving if she'd tee-boned you at an intersection in Bellevue, stumbled out of the wreckage, looked at your mangled body and said "What the F--- were doing in my intersection!!"
I'm awaiting Robert's hard hitting piece on Everett City Councilman, Sound Transit Vice-Chair and accused rapist ( see the everett hearld for details) Mark Olson. Olson has a conviction for drunk driving after nearly hitting a policeman with his car. But King5 couldn't be bothered to report on the fact he is accused of violating his probation by boozing and then sexually assaulting a woman because....oh yeah, Jane's story is sooo much more newsworthy. After all she's a woman and a respected moderate republican...can't have any of those hanging around. Seriously, when will this story get any, much less equal, attention??
Did the officer have a dash-board camera? If so, that would seem to resolve so many of the questions raised by the conflicting versions of the story.
Blackouts are a sign of alcoholism. This is when the person drinking does not remember any thing they did while under the influence, only to “wake” up pulled off to the side of the road with an officer at your door.
Uh yah....Cops just make stuff like that up! NOT!! Be a big girl and apologize to the public and the police. Don't hire a 50k retainer attorney and look for some loophole in the law. Cussing out a public servant? She makes me sick.
This is in response to Bunny Lynn's remarks.
Bunny may I ask you if you have ever been crushed between 2 vehicles 3 times by a drunk driver, have you ever lost a body part such as a leg, and the use of your other leg, did you ever spend 30 days in a coma on life support not expected to live, did you ever lay in a hospital bed for 1 year, have you ever had 28 surgeries to piece your body back together, have you ever sat in a wheel chair for 5 years because you were told you may never walk again, have you ever lost your ability to work because of any of the above things happened to you, well Bunny all of the above happened to me by a drunk driver and the last 10 years have been hell and that is what I have sacrificed, lets not forget, as you put it drinking and driving is a serious topic, it maimes and kills people, you do not have a clue, would you still support Jane if she had caused that kind of harm to someone else, Jane needs to step down or hopefully she will be voted OUT!!
she has a problem and is in denial, and worst of all thinks she is above the law.
COME ON! Let's just call her guilty. You people seem to think she is with out even any real proof. If 1 he has a cam fine. BUT some police offiers do and will lie and in his so called police report why does he keep saying Jane this and that. I have read police report many times and they normally state the defendent not there names. Seems like he knew who she was and was trying to make her look and sound bad. Lets just say he isn't and hasn't voted for her im sure.
support for her also comes from constituents that are sick & tired of bein over-taxed, over-regulated, & over-criminalized.
The police are not super heros. they lie, cheat, take bribes, kill their wives, rape female drivers, & exaggerate like any bully.
and if Hague were a liberal, there would be no media story reported and she would be Promoted within her party.
Wine is in a glass...bottle.
Maybe that's what she meant.
Anyone in office SHOULD be held to the same standards if not higher. If she blew a .14, she should be punished in the same degree as anyone else. Period.
She should be treated like any other "busted" drunk. Being a politcal figure makes it even worse. My tax dollar is paying for this type of behavior?
To blow a .14 she would have had to consume a 6oz glass of wine every 9 minutes for the hour preceeding her arrest. In other words 7 glasses of wine in 60 minutes to have that equivalent BAC .14. That is assuming she doesn't have alcoholic hepatitis or cirroshis, which would slow the metabolism of ETOH.
Amazing. Ms. Hague takes no responsibility for her actions. This is evident by her finding a loophole in current DUI laws. She says that she wants to be treated like anyone else. I guess if anyone else is the kind of person that likes to skirt the laws, find loopholes, and drive drunk (come on, who honestly believes that this is the only time in her life that she has done this...) then I guess that she has succeeded.
