The slugged it out over Iraq, Social Security and taxes. Who got your vote?
When asked when to pull troops out of Iraq, Republican Dave Reichert said the decision must be made by military generals and the President. Democrat Darcy Burner said she'd consider adding new taxes for income over $90,000 for Social Security. Two very different candidates, with some very different positions. After watching the debate, who got your vote?

I was at the Meydenbauer Center for the Burner/Reichert debate and came away dismayed that the Democratic Party could not find a qualified candidate to challenge Dave Reichert. Dave's record of service to his country as an Air Force officer, Sheriff, and now Chair of an important sub-committe of Homeland Security brings me a sense of security that we have a "watchman on the wall" in Washington D.C.
Darcy's condescending statement to such a statesman that she "...is a licensed carrier of a gun in her purse and knows how to use it" was so very offensive. This pales in the stature of the man we elected before and must elect again. Her qualifications also only consist of meager service to her community, and being the mother of a three year old, whom she is willing to NOT parent while she takes hours and hours of time and money campaigning. (Ask any parent or grandparent, the first three years are a picnic compared to what might happen later in a child's life.) Our world is very dangerous right now. Psychopaths run rogue nations and their fingers are on the trigger. We need Dave in place to offer his expertise. He is doing a fine job and needs to be reelected so he can continue contributing in a meaningful way to our government. Having Darcy in D.C. would cause me sleepless nights.

Congressman Dave Reichert represents right government and moral values. This man was not ashamed to state in his debate that he made decisions based on his belief in God. This is to be respected. This state needs representation in Washington, DC from this kind of man.
Stephen Kates said:
Congressman Reichert is an example of the values which our forefathers represented when our nation was formed, and the values which our country represented from time to time over history when the free world was threatened by tyrants and dictators. He has high morale values, leadership qualities & skills, integrity and above all - has the attributes to represent our District and State, with pride, at Congress. One just needs to follow his career over the past three decades and his dedication to public service. Let's not forget his tenacity, dedication, leadership and success... and the key role he played.. in solving the "Green River Killer" murders. Although I no longer reside in the United States (am living in Canada), I am an American citizen and formally resided in Mercer Island and Bellevue. I remain committed to supporting deserving public servants and politicians who can make our State and Country a safer and better place to reside, both today and in the future. I will return to Bellevue, sooner than later, im my retirement years and trust that our representatives in government will have have the same qualities that Dave Reichert holds. It will be severe loss to our State and Country if Congressman Reichert is not re-elected to the House of Representatives.

Sheriff Reichert has earned our trust and respect as a leader by example in our community. A representative should truly be that, someone drawn from the community who exemplifies its values. Ms. Burner is an opportunist, seeking to capitalize on a negative tide for Sheriff Reichert's party to carry her into an office for which she is wholly unqualified. She's done nothing of any consequence in her life for anyone else. She might be suitable in the future, but first she should run for some office like the school board and gain some more life experience.

Congressman Reichert has provided excellent public service over the past three decades and as a citizen, he has performed the most fundamental civic duty, he has voted. His challenger has rarely (if ever) voted. Her not voting is an amazing thing for someone wanting my vote and my support. It is disheartening that someone without any public service or leadership record (and a minimal if any public voting record) would seriously consider or even run for Congress.
It is good that her father was in the Air Force and her mother was a teacher, but what has she done? Three years at Microsoft pales in comparison to Congressman Reichert's lifetime of serving us. 24-7-365, not just when it is convenient, but weekends, nights, and holidays; in the rain and while being shot at or stabbed, he has been there fighting for us on the front lines and jumped in to fight crime, domestic violence, mass murderers and rapists. He fights for us and he has worked his way to this position because everyone that gets to know him pushes him to the front. We need leaders, and Dave Reichert is a leader.
When there is a problem, Congressman Reichert looks for solutions, not how to pass the blame. We need a fixer in Congress, not a blamer.
Congressman Reichert has more than proven his mettle to the peril of his own life while defending us on the Eastside. He has stood up for principled decisions and has effectively represented and will continue to represent us superbly.

I take offense at Mak's lead in to this debate as "Reichart fighting for his political life" in this race with Burner.
After watching/listening to the debate in bellevue last week, it is OBVIOUS that reichart is the better canidate.
The Seattle Times this morning endorsed Reichart. If any Burner supporter wants a wake-up call, read the article. Not for the remarks of Reichart, but for the remarks of Burner and WHY THEY DON'T endorse her.
It is so obvious that Burner is running against BUSH. She/campaign needed this wake-up call. I hope they heed it, and change direction.
Reichart deserves to go back to washington dc.

Dave Reichert came across in the debate as mature and having greater knowledge on the issues. Darcy Burner interrupted and talked over him during his early responses, then chastised him when he responded in kind. She dodged the questions on service by talking about her business background. She dodged the issues on tax increases by talking around the subject. She is of the same arrogant, condescending mold as Patty Murry and Maria Cantwell. We need less of that attitude in government rather than more.
I would like to see Candidate Burner give a straight answer to a question just once . She is trying so hard to push messages that she refuses to give simple answers to questions. She has done this in debates, radio and television interviews. Enough fluff, give me a real answer with specifics, not general statements that neither confirm nor deny the presence of an answer to the question posed. Don't be afraid to own your words. Way to go Congressman, keep pressing her to give specifics.

And I am sure if Darcy Burner is elected she will be look at more non-creative solutions to some of our troubles in America by simply impose a tax to solve the issue. Prior to watching the debate between Reichert and Burner this morning, I was inclined to vote for Reichert. However, the debate actually changed my mind. It seemed as though Reichert never actually answered the questions posed to him. He offered everything but the answer to Robert Mak. Burner offered straight forward and honest answers. Reichert was argumentative and interruptive. He just couldn't seem to control his outbursts when Burner was trying to speak. I had to chuckle when Reichert explained what "Public Service" he offered the community, as it was virtually the SAME as what Burner had just answered about her own public service. I think Reichert needs to focus on doing the right thing in Congress, and not focus on how to make Burner look bad.

Burner does not have a clear plan on Iraq-only that our troops should not be there if a civil war is erupting. This is merely a comment, not a plan. Regarding social security, she was not upfront about raising taxes, which effects all of us. On the parental rights issue, once again she does not respond directly, but looks a scenario in which it might be difficult to "require" parental consent for an abortion. Burner, what about better education on lifestyle BEFORE a prenancy takes place?

Reichert came across to me as being exactly what Mak first said, that Reichert is fighting for his political life. He was scared, nervous, terribly rude, and evasive. For instance, when asked what his plan was for getting troops out of Iraq, he ducks it, saying only that the generals have to decide. Then he insisted that Darcy come up with her own personal plan. Fair play? No.
Reichert claims that he gave all this wonderful service as King County Sheriff. My information is that he wasn't very good at all. Why didn't Mak dig into that? Why didn't the Democrats, for that matter? If someone is going to stand on their record, let's have the facts about that record.
I do think it is very interesting that both sides seemed to be using the fact that Reichert has been siding with Bush as a negative. Think about that. Let's sweep out the incumbents and start fresh. I've decided to vote for Darcy Burner. I hope you will.

Darcy Burner is an educated, principled candidate, who will represent the people of our district with integrity, honor and deep committment. Dave Reichert is a good man, and I appreciate all he did as the KCS, but he belongs to a group of politicians who believe it is perfectly acceptable to allow their personal and religious views to strip away the rights of others. Our country was founded for religious freedom, not to allow politicians to impose their religious convictions on others. Voting based on one's 'faith' even if it means 'going against the wishes of people in his district' is frightening and not at all how our goverment was designed to work. He has been bank rolled to attack Ms. Burner (falsely - using the politics of fear and lies) by the Republican party's war chests. We all know where that money comes from. At least those of us who bother to educate ourselves and understand what is really going on, and don't just pick a candidate based on blind allegiance to a political party, one or two 'hot button' issues (like abortion or gay marriage) and vote that way to the exclusion of all logic, reason, and careful discernment of what is facing this country.
Darcy would be a breath of fresh air for the 8th district. The future of our democracy and literally, of this country, depend on us changing the 'regime' in this country. Start with this race! Vote for change and someone who will stand up to George W. Bush and fight for the people of this country, and not their wealthy, priviledged friends. It's amazing to me how good people can be so blind in following this administration's policies that are so bad for America.

Darcey would have the Chaos of the Congress decide when to remove our support of the Iraqi Democratisation. I think it was Ben Franklin who said something to the effect that if you want to build a brick wall you should see a mason not a pastry cook. Ben Franklin also said that to achieve success in any endeavor "Observe the masses and then do that which the would not do".

Even though I am extremely upset with the administration and the Republican controlled Congress that has failed to reign it in, I still feel that Reichert is the right man for the job.
Despite the fact that Reichert has opinions and beliefs that do not correspond with mine in any way, I believe that he is someone who honestly follows his heart when it comes to his vote. He had the courage to say that he has no idea what it's like to be a woman faced with the choice of abortion, so he would have to follow his own personal feelings. That takes guts to admit.
Granted, he's voted WITH the administration on some questionable issues, but this is all part of the game, and he knows it. You can't be part of a political party and vote against them 100% of the time! You have to pick and choose your battles, something I feel Reichert has done successfully. He has taken the right stance on critical issues, in my opinion. Sure, his global warming comment probably wasn't the smartest move, but he's definitely shown that he considers moves to reduce emissions important.
I have nothing against Darcy Burner, and personally I feel she is a GREAT candidate! But she doesn't have the leadership experience that Reichert has. In this critical time, where Congressional control can be shifted to force more oversight of the administration, it's important to make sure that we already have Representatives in place that already know how the system works. Reichert has shown that he can vote against the administration, but also compromise with them. The last thing we need is a newbie that has to learn the ropes during this important period, and is simply going to tow the party line (albeit, the party I want to be in control!) instead of working with the administration into compromise.

The debate was certainly interesting between Reichert and Burner. I must say I don't particularly like either one. Burner showed an excellent quality to not answer with a not answer, a quality shared by Reichert and most other politicians. They both showed great weakness and reluctance to really give the voters a clear stance on any particular issue. May the day come again when politicians take a viewpoint and defend it with everything they have. I can accept those who have a different view from my own, but dang it, take a point and stick to it!
Additionally, I would like to point out the entire reason for my post about this debate. It has very little to do with the stance of either candidate and more to do with particularly Reichert's complete misunderstanding of Congressional power. Does Congress not hold the sole possession of power to not only declare an actual war but to determine its length, its funding, and its stress on American resources? Since when did the President hold this absolute authority? Not any president has that exclusive authority, not Bush or anybody else. That power lies with Congress as determined by the separation of powers clause in the Constitution. The three branches of government have a veto power on the others, silenced only in the end by the Supreme Court who hold the power to overturn. According to Reichert, it is up to Bush to decide where the money goes for our troops, when they leave the war in Iraq (and watching the current situation, arrive shortly thereafter in Korea), and any other concerns of the war's course...he just made Bush a dictator. If Reichert is going to harp on Burner's lack of experience, then perhaps he should focus a little more on the fact that the man he granted absolute power to in his debate is not only not entitled to that power, but is forbidden to hold that power by the very laws which made him president, legitimately or not. As an aspiring teacher, I find it absolutely tragic that Reichert managed to get through his schooling years without even a basic understanding of the documents which have allowed him to live his life the way he has. No wonder this country is so confused and no one is willing to stick thier neck out for a cause.

Hello:
Several things have hit a cord with me. First off, I am angry that politicians that keep the parents out of the lives of our girls by taking away our rights to parent. I had a daughter that thought she was pregnant. I was not allowed to be informed. However, the middle school gave lots of counseling where to go for abortions, give up the baby etc. I was kept out of the loop. This girl went on self destruct and we couldn't understand what happened. Five years later after drugs, unprotected sex from self hate, suicide attempts, and bulimia, she needed counseling from all of above. We found out only when we had to put her in treatment for severe bulimia from tearing the lining of her stomach from five years of purging. She had been afraid to tell us anything. If she had the opportunity to tell us when in middle school, she would have found out that her family a huge support system in place for her,no matter what happens in her life. We are a right to life family and the school and counselors made her feel we would not help her and that abortion was a quick fix. Do you have any idea how many girls haved grief after abortion that lingers for years. Bad political idea for anyone to espouse.
My other complaint is the war in Iraq. It is not working right now. I feel it is again a political fiasco. Caused by politicians that refuse to know their bounds and let the military run their military. Yes, there has to be accountability. There are too many chefs in the kitchen.
No increase in tax for the social security. Again, the little guy will still pay the price.
It feels like we are right back in the 60's and 70's with life getting out of control.

You can measure any person by their manners. The simple fact is that Reichert displays his character by way of interrupting Burner during today's show while discussing the war in Iraq. I remember a moment during the Kerry v. Bush debates. Those debates are supposed to be very structured, but this one didn't adhere to its structure. Bush went about interrupting Kerry that day without the moderator stopping him. Reichert and Bush are two men who need to learn that interrupting is one the rudest things they could do during a formalized discussions like these. Where are our gentlemanly manners that are so needed in politics today more than ever? Maybe if we had manners in our administration we might actually NOT be in the HUGE foreign mess we're in now.
Phil said:
After watching Reichert and Burner discussing Social Security on TV what struck me was how disingenuous Dave Reichert was in answering the question posed by Robert Mak.
In summary Reichert said he would protect social security by not raising taxes, not reducing benefits and not privatizing social security. These aren't solutions, these are answers that pander. We need politicians that will generate solutions and will guide us through difficult decisions.
Demographics are turning against the current formula for social security and we need to reassess the program and how it serves our society. When the program started, seniors were among the poorest segments of society and were typically relying on social security to provide income for less than a decade post-retirement. Today seniors are no longer the poorest segment as economic policies that have stagnated middle class wages are delaying and preventing younger generations from saving for retirement while seniors are now expected to spend more than a decade collecting checks from social security after they retire.
When Darcy Burner had her chance to respond I was excited to see that she did suggest one possible solution, one that deserves serious evaluation in raising the cap on the wages that are used for calculating payments into the social security system. Reichert, playing up the fear of more taxes for everyone, insisted on interrupting to emphasize that "that's a tax increase." Apparently Reichert, who's lack of critical and creative thinking on the issue would appear to engender the potential for either a massive tax increases (or reduced benefits) for future generations, finds a politician that actually considers how to balance the ledger in the present tense to be something intolerable.
I'm glad I'll be able to vote for a thoughtful candidate like Darcy Burner on November 7, rather than someone that clearly lacks the capacity or interest in addressing our public policies in a meaningfull as Dave Reichert illustrated in his debate responses.
Don't mistake polished responses of someone that's made a career out of self promotion (as Reichert has) for thoughtfulness and candor (which Darcy's presentation suggests). I'll happily take a critical thinker over rubber stamp, carbon copy of failed national and international policies anytime.

Sure, Dave Reichert has done wonderful things in his career as Sheriff. He has had 2 years to create a track record, which he has done; Rubber Stamp for the Neo-cons. It isn't Bush- it is the failure of so-called conservative policies that is dragging our constitution through the mud.
Mr. Reichert I'm sure is a swell guy but should he be rewarded for his record in Congress by being sent back? I don't think so.
If it means anything, I also served 2 tours for the Endless War as part of a 24 year career in the Navy. My oath of office was to "Protect and defend the Constitution of the United States" not the people, the President or any piece of property. Where is Dave when that foundation document is under attack? He stands by while torture is made legal and the Geneva Conventions are thrown under a bus, the same Geneva Conventions that were created to protect him while he served in the A.F. and our guys serving now.
I want NEW leadership in Washington and bi-partisan agreements from our representatives. Not a Rubber Stamp for the neo-cons.
Darcy will get my vote.

Dave has my vote. I can not believe that Darcey Burner thinks that she is qualified to take this position. It is obvious that she has had no experience in dealing in Government and how it works. Maybe she should try something on a state level. She has No Real community service experience, and what makes her think that she knows what the people of her community need? unless you have the experience of working with those people how can she say she knows whats best for them? Unless she is speaking out for the wealthy, why doesnt Ms. Burner spend some time with those people in the community that a low income and find out what their needs are see how they live before she thinks she can walk in to Congress and make changes. Not to mention, being a rookie congressperson, she is low man on the totem pole and her voice would not be heard regardless of how she thinks things should be changed unless she were the dictator of this country. That is the only real way she can say she could and would make these changes.... what I would like to know is if Ms. Burner would be willing to change social security by saying NO to Illegals receiving benefits? after all the promise was made to the american people not to the people who come here through illegal means and get benefits. Same with welfare? so Ms. Burner, what now?

Congressman Reichart's past achievements haven't helped him with his current responsibilities. Congressman Reichart has failed in his pledge to defend our Constitution while the Bush admninstration runs rough-shod over protections written by the founding fathers. Congressman Reichart has failed to demand a credible plan for conducting the war in Iraq that includes the eventual withdrawal of our troops. Congressman Reichart has failed to truly make America more secure, supporting instead the many "false security" measures put forth by the Bush administration. Congressman Reichart's plan for securing Social Security is ... to study the problem some more.
In the 8th district, the choice is simple:
If you want a neutered Congress that will continue supporting Bush's policies that will keep us in Iraq until today's kindergarteners graduate from high school, while Congress continues to shirk its responsibility to secure Social Security ... vote for Reichart.
If you want to take our country back and restore the protections the founding fathers wrote into the Constitution; if you want the war in Iraq brought to a successful conclusion; and you want Congress to keep the promises made for decades to working Americans about Social Security ... vote for Darcy Burner.

1. There is a difference between Public Service and Public Servant! Community Service is Public Service. Public Servant is one who has worked for the Government for longer then 5 years.
2. There is a big difference between Oversight and NO Oversight. Congress has not done its job of oversight in this conflict. IT IS NOT A WAR! There has to be a declaration of war in-order for WAR to happen. We are in a Conflict of Terror not a WAR against Terror!
3. Dave has NOT done his job in the 8th unless you are rich! He has help get rid of the Disability Housing grants by over 50%, He has tried to cut the Veterans Administration and he never bothered to help on the trying to get the information back that was stolen. I have yet to see Dave do anything for the poor and for the middle class. I also have yet to see Dave do anything for Education! He has tried to help cut the Department of Education by 60%.
4. Dave in the interview has flip/flopped on the issues, proven by his speech. And I can’t trust someone that has stated “I captured the Green River Killer, on my own.” It was a team effort and 20 years ago, he let him go! So there is his record, let it go until it is a real problem!
5. While he was Sheriff he did NOTHING on enforcing the laws. He decided to pick and choose which laws were to be enforced. Meaning if you were any ethnic background other then white you were charges with the laws and he would seek maximum time in jail, but he let a few of his “white” friends off of DUI and DWI!
6. I am all for Burner’s paying your fair share policy, Example: I am a V.P of the USA and I make over $29 million. I only pay $400 in taxes. Now I am a middle class person single making about $65,000/year and have to pay $2000 in taxes. Why? This is NOT paying your fair share.
7. Republicans are the ones how state, “we are Christians and we follow the bible in everything we do.” No they don’t! Since when has any republican done anything for the poor, disabled, homeless, jobless or those who are small business? They have not done anything for these people. In fact they have cut everything for these groups.
8. They have had over 5 years to make this country safe with securing the borders and ports. It is only close to the election that they have tried to do anything. Along the border with Mexico, which is 2000 miles, they have only allotted 700 miles of fence. A band aid to the problem.
9. So from where I am, a vote for Dave is a vote for more paranoia in the “war on terror” and less ways to secure our borders. This is not even talking about domestic terrorist. From the Archives of Congress, “Terrorism is any person or group that causes fear by doing violent acts.” Question, what would you call gangs, or gang activity?

Burner had no answers or plans - she answered direct questions with no depth or real knowledge of the complexities of the issues. Also, it is of great concern that she could not admit honestly that she wishes to raise taxes. Anyone who says that "the rich should pay their fair share" is ignorant of economics. The rich pay way more than their fair share! And I say that as a member of a household that is way below that magic $90,000 threshold.

I just saw the exchange between Dave Reichert and Darcy Burner. What I still find amazing is that the answers from Dave Reichert are virtually ignored by his opponent that answers every question with “The Bush Administration” and then the answer. This debate is not about the Bush Administration, it is about our State… The State of Washington and how this congressional electee will represent us. Feel good answers and made up statistics might make the voters feel good, but on brass tax, think of this… the raising of taxes on people that make over $90,000 per year; does anyone realize that currently anyone making up to $90,000 pays up to $5,580 a year into SSA and that amount over a period of 10 years is almost $60,000? How many Washingtonians currently save $5,500 per year, let alone actually pay it in SST. Take more in taxes and reduce the saving even more? Is that where Darcy Burner comes from? What would $5,000 per year average in a moderate mutual show as a return? Give the funds to Washingtonians as a modified 401k and see how the retirement funds increase...
Here would be two of the questions I would like Darcy Burner to answer…
1) How much would she like to see the people of Washington State who make over $90,000 pay, and how about under $90,000.
2) If Dave Reichert voted in step, as she said ~ and failed to make the point as to exactly how many votes were “in step” with the administration ~ what were her colleagues record for the same exact set of votes, and for that manner, how would she have voted.
If Darcy Burner can answer those questions without using terms like “options on the table” and “a fair amount” , she may actually make inroads into the next general election, but as for now, democratic talking points without substance aren't going to sway this vote…

Darcy also stated she supported Cantwell on what she has done. News Darcy, Cantwell has not done anything positive for our state. She is riding on shirttails of what others have done. As far as Social Security goes, it is time for a change. Let those who pay in decide how they want to invest it. Congress should be on the SS tax roles, but that's another day,(it will never happen). Raising taxes to solve a problem is not a solution. Darcy needs to grow up and dig deep to back up what she says.

I couldn't believe it. This is totally over-the-top exaggeration - She was only a program manager (one of many thousands), in her case, for only a logo program and 3 years at MSFT is not a career. Read her own words: http://blogs.msdn.com/darcyburner/ For other sake, a program manager is mostly an entry job at Microsoft and she seemed an average employee and the program was during her tenure, not especially successful. Darcy was not considered an executive by co-workers and she had zero impact the way software was build, nor was she a "Lead Product Manager" for .Net as described in Wikipedia. Marketing a logo does not chance how software is built but resume misrepresentation can be a firing offense and I don't believe it qualifies Darcy for congress. It’s clear there is a propaganda campaign pushing distortions on her behalf by handlers.

Now for the Py Increase of Congress. They have been voting them-selves a pay raise of 15% each year. This is NOT the COLA (cost of living allowance) it is a pay raise. My knowledge comes first hand from 2005 where they did take SSA up to $90,000. Although, I might add, that my argument still holds quite a bit of water, as, there is still quite a bit of difference in what you are aware of and what the regular non-tax knowledgeable residents of this state and the rest of the 49 United States are aware of… My guess is that if any politician were to make this case with actual tax-law facts, the American majority would understand the Democratic all time favorite “Class Warfare”, and that raising taxes on a “special group” while not raising taxes on another “special group” while is "sounds good" and feels good' to hear, may open a door our country has fought for over 200 years to rid itself. At what point would the “special group” being taxed, quit? Imagine how we would operate if the people paying all the taxes quit working? Who then would we rely on then? Ever hear of a county called North Korea? That number by the way, (the number paying the majority of the taxes) is not as large as you might think.

August 27, 2004: Dave Reichert advocates letting the federal ban on semi-automatic firearms expire.
Please read following article:
Reichert opposes assault weapons ban
Sheriff's support for letting law expire shocks activists
By CHRIS McGANN
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER CAPITOL CORRESPONDENT
Dave Reichert, King County sheriff and Republican congressional candidate, recently told a group of Second Amendment advocates that he supports letting the federal ban on assault weapons expire.
His position shocked community activists with whom he had worked closely in the past to establish and promote gun-violence prevention programs. It is also at odds with a wide segment of law enforcement officials, including Seattle police Chief Gil Kerlikowske.
But Reichert said yesterday his statement should not come as a surprise to anyone.
"I've never changed my position," Reichert said. "My whole point has always been holding gun owners responsible and accountable and always focusing on those people who were committing crimes with guns. ... I've never felt that the banning of certain weapons has really done anything at all."
But that clear stance has not been so obvious to some who have, up to now, regarded Reichert as a steadfast ally.
"I'm stunned," said Pamela Eakes, founder of Mothers Against Violence in America. "He has been so firm on this issue."
Eakes said she was happy when Reichert told her he was going to run for Congress because she thought she could count on him to uphold the assault-weapons ban based on his past support of it.
"Dave has spoken in support of the assault-weapons ban," Eakes said. "He has been an advocate and a friend of those who care about saving lives and keeping children away from guns."
She said the only reservation she'd ever heard Reichert express about the law was that it was not strong enough.
In 1999, Reichert knocked heads with the King County Council because he wanted to destroy seized semiautomatic assault weapons, rifles and shotguns to prevent them from returning to the streets. The council said a state law prohibited them from amending a county law that required his department to sell or trade surplus and seized rifles and shotguns as well as "handguns of potential value" to licensed dealers.
Yesterday, Reichert said the legislation that bans sales of semiautomatic assault weapons was ineffective.
The federal assault-weapons law was passed in 1994 as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. It prohibits the manufacture, sale and importation of certain military-style, semiautomatic weapons and ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. The law will expire next month unless Congress and President Bush renew it.
The bedrock of Reichert's campaign has been the reputation he earned as the man who brought the Green River Killer to justice. His stance on specific issues, including the weapons ban, largely mirrored those of the Bush administration.
In the case of the assault-weapons ban, Bush has been accused of changing course.
In an Op-Ed article that ran this week in The Christian Science Monitor, Kerlikowske implored Bush to follow through on his 1999 campaign promise to support the reauthorization of the ban.
"The ban was passed for very practical reasons," Kerlikowske wrote. "Prior to 1994, criminals were armed with enough firepower to outgun the police, making them nearly impossible to subdue, and allowing them to wreak terrible havoc in public places. The ban kept military-style assault weapons out of the hands of criminals. Since the passage of the ban, federal crime statistics show a dramatic 66-percent drop in the incidence of assault weapons traced to crimes. Given that, I can't think of a rational reason not to renew this law."
Reichert said there are statistics that can be used to support both sides of the debate. And there's at least one other distinction between the two top cops that could have something to do with their differing points of view, Reichert said.
"He's an appointed chief, and I'm an elected sheriff," Reichert said.
He said the confusion is the result of his political opponents trying to "paint" him in a certain light. "This isn't the only issue that has been twisted."
But Reichert admits his support of allowing the weapons ban to sunset is based on only part of the legislation -- the part that bans particular semiautomatic weapons.
He said high-capacity magazines are the real problem for law enforcement. "I don't like the idea of someone having a magazine that can carry 40 rounds and point it at me, as a police officer."
Restricting the magazine capacity to 10 rounds of ammunition gives his men a fighting chance, he said.
"At least (a criminal) has got to reload somehow, which gives us some time. If you've got a guy there with a semiautomatic weapon and he's got a banana clip and he's got 80 rounds, he can shoot at us forever and keep us pinned down."
The assault-weapons ban outlaws such clips, but because the prohibition is linked to the ban to the firearms themselves, the whole bill should be abolished, Reichert said.
And once both parts of the bill are scrapped?
"I wouldn't propose another bill." Reichert said. "It's not my purpose to go back to Congress and introduce any other legislation that would limit gun ownership or limit magazine capacity. I'm going back to Congress because I want to focus on homeland security. I want to focus on jobs and the economy. I want to focus on health care and traffic."
Allan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment foundation, said he appreciated the reassurances Reichert offered his and other gun rights groups in attendance at the fund-raiser at Wade's Gun Range in Bellevue on Aug. 20.
"He definitely has the right instincts," Gottlieb said of Reichert. "He hasn't done anything to lead me to believe we couldn't count on him."

Did we need less information before going into Iraq, did we need fewer studies before developing the great homeland security which allow for the Katrina disaster?

Murray was the worst offender during the massive tax increase of 1992... she ADMITTED in the press her constituents were overwhelmingly opposed to it, but they 'just didn't understand it all' and she 'knew better'.
Darcy is a 'know better' clone who unfortunately doesn't. She has yet to give an original statement on anything. She ignores anyone that asks her for a specific plan. Sh e does a darn good job with memorizing though. I keep hoping someone asks some obscure question that's not covered by talking points, just to see her lose her "cool" again.

Actually, Darcy has always been accurate about her responsibilities at Microsoft. Her titles were "Lead Product Manager for Microsoft .NET" and "Group Program Manager for Breadth ISV Programs". The person who managed the .NET logo program reported to Darcy; Darcy's responsibilities were much broader. She managed global programs and multi-million dollar budgets.
But why insert truth into your right-wing prejudices about women? Of *course* no woman at Microsoft ever has real responsibility! How could I be so mistaken as to believe that Microsoft would ever give real responsibility to a WOMAN?

And a lot needs doing. We as a nation need ALL of our top people, our best people to face the challenges this country faces. Reichert isn't evil in my eyes he just isn't qualified based on his record both as a policeman and as a congressman, to do the job. Reichert had his chance. That's why I support Darcy. She is new and energetic and willing to work hard. I believe that she can make real positive changes. Just for your info: I do not have a high level education, I couldn't afford

I was at an event in August where both Congressman Reichert and Darcy appeared at our union hall. This was not a debate and the appearance of each candidate was separated by about 30 minutes. Dave was positive and talked about his record, why he serves, and then answered questions. He also talked about his time as a Teamster. When Darcy had her turn, she took every opportunity to say negative things about Republicans, the President and Dave Reichert. Her sound bite speech sounded memorized. She also must have assumed that everyone in a union audience is a Democrat. Well, there were quite a few conservatives in the audience that night, and they did not appreciate someone who has never been in a union, bashing a former union member. I voted for Dave partly because I knew he would not be a party-line congressman, and would use his investigative background to truly look into the issues before he votes. Darcy demomstrates by the things she says, and the untruthful comments on Dave's record, that she will tow the party line. My votes goes to Dsve Reichert.

Yet I truly believe she is willing to listen and learn what the voters want. Congressman Reichert on the other hand is a prime example of the Bush administration, he came off in this debate as Arrogant, Rude, Look-at me Know-it-all.(this is a dangerous traight because it shows he is unwilling to listen to the view points of others) This is a prime example of why US relations are failing. He also just showed that he votes on his personal convictions (Abortion) When you allow your personal convictions to overshadow the needs and wants of the voters, then you are no longer a representitive of the voters, and his Personal Reservations then interfer with his role to protect not only our Civil Liberties but also Our God given liberty to choose. It is said that God gives humans the right to choose between believing in him or not, he gives us the right to choose between right and wrong. In the end he will judge the wrong. Well if the religious truly believe in this then, as long as they tell or try to tell the person they believe to be wrong, then they did their job, However they have no right to force their beliefs on others. Next thing you know they will force others to believe. Let us not forget our fore-fathers came to America to escape religious persecution. Lastly if Congressman Reichert did his homework he would have seen that the British have had the Privatization of Social Security for many years now and have shown that the system does not work, it runs at a deficit every year and has turned into a real problem for them, it has become a welfare issue because the British Goverment has to supplement the short comings every year for those who just did not have enough savings.

Darcy Burner sounds like a broken record. Anytime she is corrected about a fact, she blindly pushes ahead stating the same talking points as if she didn't hear the truth. Unfortunately, her unwillingness to listen to the facts and change her own course of action demonstrates she lacks the ability to think on her feet.
A lot of people talk about Dave's voting record, but I highly doubt the actual research to understand these votes ever took place. Each bill is long and complex, with multiple issues, and really should not boil down to a percentage. I would like to see Darcy take a simple introductory course, sort of a Congress 101, so she could understand the length of time, and the political manuevering to pass a single bill. At the Meydenbauer Center, she made a statement that most of the 911 Commission suggestions would be put into legislation within 100 hours, if Dems took over Congress. This shows her lack of knowledge in our legislative process, since that would be impossible, no matter who was in office.
While Darcy may be a breath of fresh air, I don't think that's the breath we're looking for. Change just for change sake is dangerous, and we could trade in a perfectly wonderful Congressman, who listens to both sides, and his district (Hello, his ANWR vote???), for a complete novice, who will simply act like a yappy dog until someone shows her she really has nothing to bring to the table.

Congressman Reichert has the experience, leadership and common sense to best represent Washington State. His well thought out positions on the issues were in stark contrast to Darcy’s limited understanding of the long term impact of her decisions. Her idea to pull troops out of Iraq before the country is stabilized shows just how dangerous her lack of experience is. Her belief that “minor tweaks” will shore up Social Security for 4-6 decades would put us all at risk for dealing with the problem after it is too late. Darcy’s claim to be qualified to represent the state in Washington DC because she has coached youth sports teams made the debate seem more like a bad Saturday Night Live skit.
With over 30 years of law enforcement experience, including eight years as Sheriff, Congressman Reichert is by far the better candidate. He served us admirably during his first term, and because of his experience was named Chairman of the Emergency Preparedness subcommittee, only the 6th freshman in the history of Congress to be named Chairman of a subcommittee. For the sake of Washington State, we need to send Congressman Reichert back to DC.

As for Mr Half Nelson, You need to really read the laws.
Most of everyone that makes over $95000/year don't even pay the medicare! This was passed back in 2003 in another closed session by Congress.
Now, if we go to private accounts for SSA, then Seniors/ Disabled lose. SSDI will be no more, SSI will go away, and well so much for the retirement plan of those who just lost their pensions.
SSI you only get $650/month to try and live on. I would Love to see any Congress Member live on that figure. (I know a few people that receive this program). SSDI is an average of $1200/mo. and the retirement is about $1100/mo. So Now you have a bit more information.

Volunteers fit in a commitment to that organization, after their job commitment; it's not easy - it takes commitment and compassion. I find it insulting that he negates that activity.

It is also disappointing when it comes to stem cell research or pro-choice - that we should allow the government to fund these programs without looking at the ethical issues. I wish there was a better position on Irag in terms of withdrawal, but all I hear with the Democrats is what we are doning now is wrong - but they (including Darcy) don't have a better answer or plan. What is more appalling is blaming everything that our current Senators, State Reps on what the President is doing (depending on the party) - I don't like it when any politican does. The only part of the Darcy platform that she continues to press upon is blame it all on the President, Reicher votes with the President 100% of the time (which is not true) and if I get in office I will figure something out. Congressman Reichert is the man of the hour. He answered questions directly, firmly and with the command of a person who is the first ever Congressman to have the honor of chairing any important subcommittee (on first responders/Homeland Security) in his first term when Homeland Security is clearly number one America's mind. That shows what his peers in Congress think of him.
The Congressman both looked and acted "Congressional" in the debate. He spoke with authority and sincerity.
Congressman Reichert is clearly knowledgable and was voted earlier as a Freshman to be the second most influential person in the Washington delegation--behind veteran Democrat Norm Dicks (who also happens to be an excellent representative of Washington state) and well ahead of the other Democratic and Republican members of the delegation.
Congressman Reichert works well on both sides of the isle. He is a moderate, and independant voice, perfect for the 8th district mentality, and a fine human being with a conscience who works very hard to use his investigative background to truly look into all sides of issues, including the will of his constituents, before making choices that will affect us all.
Darcy, on the other hand reminds me of the Chatty Kathy doll of yore. When you pushed her buttons you always got the same recorded responses. Sleek on the memorization and weak on any ability to think through a serious question and answer it directly. Instead of a thoughtful and direct answer, Darcy simply pushes button three and bridges any question to her memorized set of pieces out of the DNC handbook.
The Democratic party--party of the likes of a fine representative like Norm Dicks deserves and should have come up with a better candidate.
I sincerely feel sorry for this snide and lost little brat if she gets to Congress by some lapse of reason in the 8th. The big boys and girls back there will eat her for lunch.

I also fund it refreshing to hear a politician finally consider a tax increase. No-one has the courage to admit that they might have to increase taxes, when any idiot can see that we have been getting away with murder, and will eventually have to pay for our measly pittance refunds which could have done so much more good than they did by being 'refunds'. I'd vote for Darcy any day. She may not have much experience, but she is also not part of the conspiracy!

So-called debate: The point was that people wanting important congressional jobs are spouting data that is incorrect, i.e. Burner stated she would consider adding new ssa taxes for income over $90,000 - heck that has already been done. Should one know what is going on before making statements? As info the ssa & medicare deduction is presently 7.65% for the employee and employer (15.30%) and has been that for a long time but each year congress raises the cap - gone from about $50,000 to the present $94,200. As for D. Hunt's post about earners over $95,000 not paying medicare - I say "show me the money" Do not think congress passed any law in 2003 exempting high wage earners from paying medicare. Neither democrats or republicans would be that dumb. Addressing private accounts - how could one say that one would lose SSI or SSDI if a private accounts law or partial private accounts law was written that stated these benefits would be kept? Point - depends on how the law was written. Mr Hunt you need to do some more research yourself!

Reichart has not represented me in DC. The thought of him remaining in office gives me a sense of dread. Darcy Burner is obviously a intelligent woman who I feel will ask the right questions and seek real solutions on my behalf. Reichart's ads attack Burner. Why does'nt he state his vision of leadership for the 8th district. Or is he waiting for President Bush's que?

Neither of these candidates understand continued US presence in Iraq is making things worse, not better. We are not just getting our own troops killed, we are getting Iraqis killed that try to work with us. Iraqis want us (the occupiers) out - now.
Its time to be calling Iraq a tragic mistake, take responsibility for it, and to show the world that democracies like the US have checks and balances that work - that Presidents that lie to the public can be held accountable. Burner needs to be talking about accountability for Iraq. Impeaching Bush is a good place to start, and at this point may be about the only thing the USA can now do to restore some sense of respect in the rest of the world.

say you make $150,000 a year. for about 7 months of the year, you'll be getting SS taxes taken out of your paycheck. once august hits, you get a 'raise' (from your own money, no less) and the govt lets you keep that 'extra pay' ..
come january, you are back to paying SS taxes. so yes, every single American making MORE THAN 90,000 dollars a year pays the MOST taxes - those making less than about 26,000 do NOT pay taxes..
hows that grab ya now Leftie?

The laws can be found in the USC and CFR.
The tables can be found on the SSA website or in some of hte manuals. Besides it helps to have an SSA Lawyer as a friend who can tell you when the new laws are in play.
Lauri, As for the examples I have use, it was a true report from Dick Chaney, and a friends of mine who works for the government. Which can be found if you look for them.
Besides I know a few people on SSA pension that make 26,000 and pay 700 a year in taxes.
I am looking at the rate should be across the board at the same rate. Not cuts for some and make other pay.
SO as for that I have done the research and I still feel that what I have posted is accurate.

Darcy will raise taxes. She said so today, and she has said so in the past.
Darcy needs to go volunteer at lower levels of volunteerism and government (PCO, City Parks Dept., etc.) before jumping in to Congress.
Congressman Reichert has worked for more years and has more real-life experience working for you and me than Darcy has been alive. We need experience and someone who can and has accomplished things in his life.
Being in Congress is very serious business and those who quit their job or hobby every two or three years should not try something this serious.
Darcy failed to even vote. How can you honestly vote for someone who doesn't even believe in America and democracy enough to vote? (I guess that she knew that she lived in corrupt MLKing County and her husband's democratic vote would be counted at least two times, so her vote wasn't necessary.)
Seriously, those of you who are actually considering voting for her have to know that she is truly in too deep and not qualified for this position. You know that coaching a few peewee soccer games is a far cry from being in the Air Force and her claiming that she is active in state and local politics when she has voted in less than half of the general elections in the past 6 years is intellectually dishonest at best. How can you honestly take her seriously as a candidate? Do you believe her talking points? Will she be given any position of leadership in her freshman term? Of course not. She will be treated as the lightweight she is and the 8th district (and Washington State) will suffer for it.
With Darcy in DC, we would have four completely ineffective legislators (CantdoanythingWell, Murray, Bagdad Jim McDermott and Darcy) each currently are tools for the power brokers from San Francisco.
Remember when Cantwell, after complaining about the high prices of gas, climbed into her Suburban/Tahoe/Monster SUV? We will see nothing but those types of fluffy photo ops from Darcy. We have already seen what she did with her job description at Microsoft.
Congressman Reichert has been too busy trying to actually keep us safe. In case those on the left haven't noticed, for the past 20 years, Islamic Jihadists have been trying to kill you (OBL's fatwa in 1998...) and Kim Jong Il probably has a missle that can reach Fremont's communist statues. (Using fission material from Madelaine Albright's appeasement policies...boy did that work out well!!?!)
Dave Reichert needs no puffery to inflate his resume or his experience. He is a hard working son of a gun and he will continue to fight for the 8th district.
The choice is clear. There truly is only one congressional candidate in the 8th District, and that is Congressman Dave Reichert.
Pale Rider said:
I see the Republican activists are out in force here, simply repeating Reichert's talking points, even though many of them have been proven false.
For example, on the matter of Burner's voting record: some of the elections they count where she "didn't vote" were local elections where she wasn't eligible to vote.
And Reichert was so well prepared for the debate in Bellevue that he claimed he didn't know anything about the issue of the FCC's regs on media consolidation. And this with Frank Blethen sitting right in the front row! The only bigger hot button for Blethen is the Estate Tax.
And then The Times endorses him. I think Reichert knows full well where he stands and just didn't want to make it too obvious why The Times was going to endorse him.
When asked if a pharmacist should have the right to refuse to fill a prescription for birth control, he simply said "Yes" and gave no further explanation or justification. Well, I don't want a Christian Taliban running this country.
But let's talk about Social Security. Some people think privatized accounts are a great idea and claim this wouldn't impact current benefits. Here's how it works.
SS is a pay-as-you-go plan. Current contributions cover the cost of benefits for those drawing SS today. SS has been running in the black for years, and continues to do so. The excess goes into the SS Trust Fund. That's why Congress keeps borrowing from the Trust Fund to make the budget look better.
If a large percentage of current contributions is locked up in these privatized accounts, that will reduce the amount of money available to pay current beneficiaries. Presto - instant insolvency for the current Social Security program! But that's actually part of the GOP's plan. It's just one step in an attempt to eliminate any programs that don't benefit the millionaires.
Let's talk about tax increases. Who do you think is going to be stuck with the bill for this incredible misadventure in Iraq (soon to include Iran)? We are running up huge debts right now. If the super-rich are excluded from taxation by eliminating taxes on dividends and capital-gains income, who will pay the bill? The middle class. The GOP won't admit to this, but it doesn't take a math genius to figure this out.
Jerry Booth, show me one place where Burner has said Reichert votes with Bush 100% of the time. Reichert made the statement to the RNC that he only votes against the party when the party leaders tell him to. Then he tries to claim he is independent. He can't have it both ways. Yes, they have given him permission to vote against the official party position on occasion, when his vote didn't matter, in order to give him some sort of fig leaf for this claim.
Finally, to "Peaches Marie", what sort of a slimeball attack is that? Not only do you name-call, but you apparently believe that women should stay home barefoot and pregnant. BTW, did you vote for Jennifer Dunn when she was representing the 8th? Typical Republican slime. Nothing but name-calling and lies.

I urge people to go to these debates not only to hear the candidates speak but mostly to see the actions of their supporters. Darcy's supporters were rude, uncaring people with no concern for others. Self centered and these are people who claim to care. I think they care more about the earth than their fellow man. Very sad. Oh, and someone above asked what was Dave Reichert doing when he was Darcy's age, well lets see, 35 yrs old: he had three children was coaching soccer, he and his wife lead the youth group at their church (and shaped the lives of these 30 young adults) he was working overtime to catch a serial psycopath killer, where he missed his kids birthday parties and soccer games, as if that is not enough he also has jumped in to help whenever someone was in need. That is just a few of the things that I know about Dave Reichert and his service when he was 35 years old. Pro-choice is not pro-abortion; I would like to know what medical school the congressman went to, since he believes that he should have a say in what decisions a women can make in regards to her health in the privacy of her doctor's office. This on air session was tilted in favor of The Sheriff. He is a local celebrity first and a congressman second and he's been in front of cameras for decades. His commitment to the issues is the same. The Sheriff does not believe in asking the Pentagon or the Executive for a troop reduction goal in Iraq. This is a goal, a military objective, not an arbitrary schedule. Ipso facto he believes in a state of permanent deployment in the Middle East. This is called imperial ambition folks, not the liberation of oppressed people, not the defense of the American people. The Sheriff believes in removing habeas corpus, ipso facto the Sheriff supports torture and supports dismantling the rights of the accused. As a former law enforcement officer he ought to understand what that means to the credibility of the law itself. The Sheriff is taking his orders without question from a party leadership that has no interest in upholding law, ethics, or the supposed moral values they espouse. He is taking orders from a party that has no interest in Dave Reichert's well being, let alone his constituency. This is a party that refuses to increase revenue for major misadventures and projects and is only too willing to pass the debt to following generations while repeating the “I will not raise your taxes” mantra. It is irresponsible to further support this behavior, or to condone it through electoral approval.
Dave Reichert has been a great public servant for the local community; he should be applauded and commended for his years of good work. It is nothing short of heroic. Unfortunately Dave has signed up to work for a national organization that mocks his contributions and values. In order to keep his seat he is beholden to their agenda whether or not his personal values are compromised by it.

When the county was out taking 65% of her neighbors property, she said NOTHING about the fundamental fairness. What about THOSE working people who lost the majority of their life savings? She said NOTHING when King County doctored the traffic concurrency studies to allow for massive developement along Novelty Hill Road and shift the cost of correcting the problems from the developers to the taxpayers, could it be because it was Democrats that support her candidacy were in charge? Sims,Pelz and company. She has remained silent on some of the most important issues in her area, why? Because she doesn't care? Or because she isn't aware. At the Seattle times debate, Dave shook Darcy's hand and proceeded over to the panel and shook all of their hands then he came down and shook hands with the crowd, Meanwhile Darcy stood in front of her mob and soaked up all the attention and holaring from her crowd. Dave is always thinking of others first. Darcy wanted the attention. Also, Linda, why does it threaten you so that Dave speaks of his service as Sheriff of King County? Did you know that it is the third largest county in the United States. That is a huge bonus on your resume'. One I am sure Darcy would love to have on hers. If you read carefully I'm not even trying to paint Reichert personally as a bad guy, which I don't believe he is. There is no name calling. I even give him props though he's not my preference, something you don't seem to have the candor or ability to do with evaluating his opponent. Furthermore, the fact that he shakes peoples hands and shows up to meetings is a pretty easy criteria for a candidate to meet. It takes more than this to try and convince me or anyone else to see the race differently.
This debate reinforced that Dave is unfortunately in an untenable situation with his obligations to support his current party leadership and I don’t see that as beneficial to him or the people of the 8th. Well then since you are so interested in fairness, please take yourself to Postmans blog and check why TVW is asking Darcy's latest ad to be removed from the airwaves. Apparently MS. Burner's folks bought some tape of a May 20th meeting of the Mainstream Republicans and cut up the tape to make it sound like he was saying that he always follows orders from the leadership. Well they left off (cut out) the rest of the comment where he goes on to explain how he has to vote against the leadership at times and vote with Democrats when he feels they are wrong on the issue. Now TVW made the DNC sign a agreement that they would NOT to cut up any footage they provided to give a false impression of a statement. TVW has found MS. Burner (who approved the ad) and the DNC in violation. Does that sound like the kind of Congress person you would support Ben? If so, I feel sorry for you. Maybe you can run over to Darcy's Website and hit the link to Horses Ass and watch her buddy Dave Goldstien implode in a shower of F-bombs over this and the Times endorsement as well. Hard to believe any serious candidate would associate herself with kind of refuse. It all goes back to character and she doesn't have any.

Thanks for the link to the transcript at Postman. TVW has an issue with the recording usage, not an ethical or contextual issue. With Reichert being a public figure and the length of the excerpt being so limited, it's not clear that they have a solid case for complaint. If they do then good for them, copyright and permission is a good thing and they should be paid. Unfortunately we do live in an era of context removed soundbytes that no candidate is above using to their advantage, including Dave Reichert or his colleagues. I wish it was a different situation. At any rate, he was right to defend his vote on Schiavo.
However, the most memorable part of the transcription of Reichert's talk is this:
"Because the big picture here is, keep this seat, keep the majority, keep the country moving forward with Republican ideals...."
It says in fewer words what I have attempted to. The rest of it is widely available by now so I won't repost it.

If she is willing to knowingly manipulate tapes to support a false charge against the Congressman, how can the voters of the 8th trust her? We can't. If she allows her supporters to spew foul mouthed hate and vitriol at her opponent like Mr. Goldstein has done on her behalf, what kind of "leader" will she be? Even a casual review of the Horses Ass website, knowing that Darcy takes these folks money and agrees with their rhetoric and appears on their broadcasts is enough for anyone with common sense. When Bush said "your with us or against us" he essentially said "vote for me and my party or your a terrorist".
He tries to associate Iraq with Terror when no link existed then says if you dont support our troops then you support the terrorists.
Do Republicans want to win the war on terror when its been their most effective campaign tool?
Republicans would rather you die and let troops die just so they can stay in power.
Notice how nothing was a "Crisis" or "Broken" until republicans took power?
Rove strategy 101, find 1 thing you suck at and 1 thing your good at and try to link them.

As a Fire Fighter and Union member, I fully support Congressman Reichert as does my union. Washington State Council of Fire Fighters has endorsed him as the best candidate. His hard work in congress has lead to financial support for more First Responders (Fire Fighters and Emergency Medical Techs) for America's protection. He has supported grants for all sizes of Fire Departments nationwide to obtain new equipment for their citizens safety.
As a Veteran, I am conscious about support for Vets after service. I think their medical needs should always be treated and accessability to those centers should be increased. I feel Mr. Reichert has shown full support for those Vets and he will continue to.
I am very sick and tired of the phone calls from Darcy Burner's campaign. They don't even have the nerve to actually speak to you, neither does the opponant. That is a turn off and I typically vote the other way once I get frustrated by the constant phone calls. I was disappointed that other labor groups think Dave Reichert is trying to lower Washington State's minimum wage. Where and how is that possible?
Congressman Reichert will continue to vote HIS OWN way and not the way of the R party. Example, the dying women in Florida! Look it up for yourself.

Just another ass kisser to George Bush and his corrupt Cronies.

With Reichert we have a chance of progress. With Burner we have nothing. I guess the choice is DO WE WANT SOMEONE THAT CAN GET THINGS OR DO WE WANT BURNER WHO WILL BE LAUGHING STOCK.

The only thing these 2 people in congress can do that means anything is vote. Darcy CANNOT vote again on the war.. so if your voting for her to go and fix the war, your misinformed, and you believe the a huge lie that she alone has any power to do something about it.
Future votes that these people can affect will be all the social stuff like taking other peoples money, and crammin changes in marrages status and all the other things that have NOTHING to do with Iraq.
For this reason alone its gotta be Dave because Darcy aspires NONE of the Core values that she was taught in the Civil Air Patol as a cadet. One of the Great acomplishments she says makes her ready for congress.

Can anyone here say honestly that they don't want to just hang yourself when you hear Darcy Burner's monotone and completely lifeless voice.
Who cares if she would even vote well, if she is elected and talks on TV all the time I would really be concerned about a spike in the suicide rate...
Stephen B. Kates (Edmonton, Alberta).
The congressman was a great speakse that seemed to know what he is talking bout. MRS, Darcy Burner spoke of things like the war like she knows whats going on as a military service member who has deployed twice in support of the war on terror, i can whole heartedly say she doesn't know whats going on. she needs to go back to microsoft cause she has new clue whats gone on the real world. Being a working class member of the world i don;t want a rich microsoft exc. to represent me.

well now that was intresting,,, darcy just proved she is a liar,, os dave has the vote!
Darcy Burner will be a great Representative. Reichert is a craven tool of the corrupt GOP.
if people were a little better off in the majority of washington state, then i think burner's point of view would make more sense.
but this is not a time to forget the little man, mr. burner. people need a help up.

Dave Reichert can't present any rationale for being in Congress other than that he was Sheriff. It's obvious that he lacks the capability and inclination to oversee the Bush administration.
I am SO tired of Republicans that refuse to require the higher income earners to pay their fair share. Why shouldn't incomes over $90,000 pay into Social Security? It's absurd!
Reichert is just a Republican mouthpiece. Our country needs a fresh start and he cannot/willnot provide it. Darcy, at least, offers some hope. Our country sure as hell deserves better than it currently has in Congress.
Daves got my vote
I think Reichert is at least honest. But as far as Social Security he should vote to give our money back. Hold the government accountable for the money they stole from the peoples social security.
Darcy seems to not be able to answer questions with Direct Answers. She came across Rude several times. She more than one answered questions with round about answers. Darcy should have run for another office to get political experence. I'm afraid to think of her not as a team player but a me person and we all know about me person. GOOD LUCK DAVE!
Would these folks and all politicians be willing to give up there stifers and be willing to pay into social security and give up there medical and have to pay for it instead of getting it free from the tax payers.
Social Security:
Just think if all politicians had to pay into the system do you think it would be in the situation it is today.
And would politicians be willing to pay into it
Darcy Burner gets my vote.
Darcy is refreshingly honest in her responses. My vote is for Darcy and I request people to think before they vote. If they want the same old status quo with congress, I guess they vote for the incumbent. But I'm definitly for a refreshing change.
The candidates are both qualified for the job. However, I don't feel Richert's opinion on abortion is approprate. His personal opinion is not the public opinion. Polititions are representatives of the population, and should take there publics opinion into complete consideration when voting for the people.
How could anyone watch Darcy Burner debate Reichart and not vote for change. Ms. Burner clearly is more informed on Reichart's office than he is. Reichart's record speaks for it all...90% of his votes are with the Bush administration. Does this man even have a single independent thought? Burner is bright, competent, successful, and qualified.
I became quite clear in the last remarks that Darcy Burner is all about burning the American people with tax increases. I want the choice to decide where my retirement funds are invested. The democrats want to treat every American like a child and protect them from themselves. I say stop the madness and let every American be responsible for their own future. And I am sure if Darcy Burner is elected she will be look at more non-creative solutions to some of our troubles in America by simply impose a tax to solve the issue. Where are the brains in that solution? Whats next a kiddy tax on chocolate bars? Just say no to more taxes and to Darcy Burner.
Darcy Burner has my vote.
Remember Congressman Reichart couldn't even get our sales tax deduction renewed.
I'm getting tired of hearing Reichert talk about his 35 years of public service. His job as sheriff was just that, his job. An admirable one, yes, but so are many other jobs. What was his public service when he was Darcy's age? I don't know, but Darcy has nothing to be embarrassed about. I also got tired of Reichert's interrupting Darcy, not letting her finish. But the real point isn't a "good" vote here and there, it's the real need to the direction of this country. And that means a change in Congress, and electing Darcy Burner. She'll be a great member of Congress.
Well nancy, some one that makes over 90000 DOES pay into social security, they pay all the way up to 90000 and they probaby pay way more that you.. also they pay for HALF of all thier employees social security if the are an employer. do you pay anybody elses taxes?? IF you want more taxes get out your check book and donate to the IRS..
reichert reminds me of a sheep being led to slaughter by bush the goat.
by the time thr republicans get done the poor will be slaves to the rich.
your not looking at the problems with a clear head.
why not get the other agencies within the federal gov. to put back the money they have suppose to have borrowed because they were going down and the ss was stable so we will use it . i remember that back from the fifties and sixties and i'm sure it continues but kept hush hush from the public.
i do not intend to vote for any republican again
Darcey is a liar she just proved it. Wishy Washy
I don't understand why someone would vote against womens' rights and not make it fair across the board involving who pays for Social Security. My vote still goes to Darcy Burner.
I watched the debate this morning, and was surprised at the lack of qualifications that Darcy Burner appears to have. Dave Reichert is an extremely well qualified candidate, and has the experience that we need in a candidate.
Darcy Burner clearly has no experience. Dave Reichert I believe he is moving in the right direction. He has my vote hands down.
I appreciate Dave Reichert's calm, straight forward answers on the issues. Darcy Burner seemed agitated and defensive. She was unable to persuade me on the issues because I could not get past her austere mannerisms.
Congressman Reichart was patronizing. There are many aged and "experienced" men in congress that are not only corrupt and immoral, but are squandering our tax dollars for insidious purposes, while refusing to hold to account failed leaders. Burner will hold the republican "good ol' boys'" feet to the fire. She has my vote.
Dave Reichert is a George Bush clone and it is time for the Republicans to give up the house and senate. America needs a new direction and leadership. Burner is right about people who make over 90k in social security retirement paying more taxes. If it makes the system solvent let's do it. VIVA LA BLUE STATE!!
D.W.I
I feel that Darcy is not running for the 8th District, but spends all her time running against
the President, who is not running and she is not running for President. She has no answers, no experience and frankly she comes across quite arrogant and "witchy". She has a unending list
of compliants and NOT one definative solution.
I have known Dave a long time and nobody not even
the president pushes him around.
I was a Reagan Republican and I'm so tired of the Bush administration and the way they have handled our domestic and foreign policies I'm voting Democrat down the line. We need a change immediately!
We definitely need change in this country. Darcy Burner would be a great step in that directions. It is obvious that the Republicans cannot govern responsibly.
I feel that Darcy is not running for the 8th District, but spends all her time running against
the President, who is not running and she is not running for President. She has no answers, no experience and frankly she comes across quite arrogant and "witchy". She has a unending list

I have never seen a more unlikeable condesending candidate for public office than Darcy Burner. I could never vote for someone who completes her sentences with her eyes closed.
I was suprised that Robert Mak would allow Darcey to avoid yes or no answers to almost every question and to only impunge or imply complacency with the Bush Administration. I know the Social Democrats are still reeling from the rejection of the Clinton Administration and the desire of the working people to return to the common sense of the Reagan Years.
First I would like to say that I am a DEMOCRAT but I always vote for the right person weather they are Republican or Democrat and Burner is not the person I would want to represent the people from our state.
I noticed that Ms. Burner allowed Mr. Reichert to fully answer Robert Mak's questions, whereas Mr. Reichert consistenly interrupted and challenged Ms. Burners' responses. It left me with a negative impression of who he is as a person and as a man. Actions speak louder than words.
We support Darcy Burner!!!!! She's the fresh canidate that hasn't been corrupted! She DOES speak for the people! The voters really need to look at Reicherts record as far as what he has really done while he has been in office. He voted to reduce the minimum wage in our state, then took a pay raise. This is so outragious and not acceptable! Do voters really think that represents our wishes? Come on people, vote for Darcy! We need her!
clearly dave Reichert won the debate with his informed logical answers and his plans for the future. Not sure where the socialists dug up the "pretty face" empty headed darcy but she surely isn't the one we want to represent us. all she can think of is cut-and-run in Iraq and Afaganstan both....sounds like an idiot. That, and "RAISE Taxes"..... that will be her first and only action.....raise taxes, raise taxes....we have enough money being taken from us now......vote for Dave REICHERT
Rose,
What kind of lifestyle choice cause's a woman to be raped?
I still find it disheartening that the people of that district voted in Dave Reichert? What has he done besides follow party lines?Real congressman listen to their constituents, not there President.I am thankful for our Congressman Norm Dicks;he listens to the people of his district and isnt afraid to stand up for what is right.Darcy Burner has ideas that might not be popular with everyone..but shes not afraid to stand up for the right things in life.Good luck Darcy!
After viewing their Up Front debate this morning, it has become very clear to me that Darcy Burner has no business running for a congressional seat. She failed to answer questions and insisted on refering to the Bush administrations shortcomings and flaws instead of offering solutions. Involvement in minor community activities, having a successful carreer at Microsoft and involvement in kids sports falls far short of qualifying as community service. Burner lacks experience and does not deserve to be elected to congress.
I also watched the debate on Sunday, I was amazed at how Darcy "danced" around the question of how she would have voted for the Military appropriations bill which had the added Anwar drilling in it. She brought up her hero Maria who"single-handedly stopped that bill" In truth, it was Mike McGavick that spoke with the Senator from Alaska to get the changes done. My vote is for Dave Reichert. His knowledge, independent thinking and background makes him more than qualified.
When do you quit running against Bush?
Why would anyone vote for Reichart?
-Votes 86% with Bush
-Voted against increasing federal minimum wage 5 times
-Voted to roll back the Clean Air Act
Supports Bush's prescription drug plan
-Flip-flop votes on ANWAR and stem cell research
-Wants to privatize your social security
-Has taken $20,000 from DeLay and voted to weaken ethics
-He's voted against fuel economy standards
-Voted against extending Tri-Care healthcare to our National Guard
-He Chairs the sub-committee on Homeland Security and has failed to pass important bills addressing 9/11 Commission recommendations..
Do your homework PLEASE before you think about voting for Reichert! Please take a look at Darcy Burner's message and vote for change
Our vote goes to Congressman Reichert. He has served his community and country with honor. He answered the questions asked him during the debate honestly and directly. Darcy Burner appeared turse and disrespectful when answering questions from Congressman Reichert. In her campaign adds, she states that her father served, her brother served, and her husband served in the military. What was her military service? Our total military service was 50 years.
Reichert wins hands-down. Burner has absolutely no qualifications for the job.
Chrissy
funny when a president has sex with a 21 yo intern,, its like "thats his personal life" you have no business even talking about it! But when a republican TALKS about sex with a 18 or was he really 21? intern it's then end of the world and whe have to change everything,,
Raise taxes, raise taxes she's going to raise taxes. Excuse me but isn't borrowing over nine trillion dollars and the interest paid a tax increase. I recall six years ago having a a trillion dollar plus surplus and a trillion dollar plus amount in social security and now it's down to 257 billion. I like Nancy Pelosi's first hundred hour plan of making the tax cuts permanent on the middle class and below and letting them run out on the upper income brackets. Where was Dave Reichert's last fundraiser? oh yeah Medina huh? All the tax cuts have been borrowed and if he thinks thats fiscal responsibility there's a viaduct he might be interested in.
If you like Bush, vote for Dave Reichert. If you want change, you have to vote for it -- whether it's Iraq, healthcare, fair wages, medicare, Katrina, etc.
Vote Darcy!
This Blog is a fake there are two comments that have my name on them that I did not write and are
for Darcy. I would not vote for her. I think she is not qualified, she is nasty, she has no
solutions and I wrote the comment that has the
name Mike on it and is sandwiched between my
comments that I did not write.
Dave, Dave, Dave..... why do you keep talking about your JOB as Sheriff SO MUCH?!?!?!?! Why do you not toot your own horn more about what you do NOW in Congress instead??!?!?!YOU did NOT single handedly catch the Green River Murderer, which I believe is why you got the vote for Congreess in the first place..... you came across as a pompous ass, arrogant, rude, and hostile.... ummm.... like a lot of cops I know!!! If you did such a great job as Sheriff, then why all the trouble and bad publicity Rahr gets from your messes? Does anyone send you a copy of the Seattle PI??? If your track record as Sheriff says anything about you as a Congressman, BURNER HAS MY VOTE!!!! Hopefully it won't be long until we see Rahr vs. Reichert in a run for Sheriff this next term!!!
The GOP has led us down a path of increased spending and far from a balanced budget. "Stay the course" is not a plan for anything. I want to know what their plans are not nice little slogans. I am going to give the Democrats a try this time as the Republicans haven't lived up the their promises of the past.
I VOTE FOR NANCY BURNER, SHE LOOK FRESH AND NEW IS WHAT WE NEED IN WASHINGTON. DAVE REICHERT LOOKED LIKE A BULLY ON T.V.WHEN HE WOULD NOT LET NACY BURNER ANSWER THE QUESTION ON THE WAR ON IRAQ. IT IS THIS TYPE OF BULLYING THE BUSH ADMINSTRATION IS DOING TO ANY ONE SPEAKING THE MINDS ON ANY ISSUE THAT DO NOT AGREE WITH THE REPUBLICANS.
JUST SO EVER READ THIS I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE PEACE MARCHERS, SCREAMING IN THE STREET AGAINST THE TROOPS, I AM A DECORATED VIETNAM VETERAN THAT HAS SEEN TWO YEARS OF EXTREME COMBAT AVAITION, AND WOUNDED IN COMBAT. DAVE REICHERT MAY HAVE BEEN IN THE SERVICE, A TRUE SOLDIER FIGHTS WITH THEIR TEAM BUT REMAINS A LEADER THROUGH LIFE, NOT A RUBBER STAMP PERSON FOLLOWING A MISGUIDED LEADER IN ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE. WE ARE AMERICANS WERE OUR FATHERS AND MOTHERS HAVE GIVEN US FREEDOMS FROM BIRTH, DUE TO THE SCRAFICES GIVEN FOR OVER 200 YEARS OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH, NOT THE CONTROLED SPEECH WITH LIMITATIONS.
I GLAD I SAW THE DEBATE UP UNTIL THEN I HAD NOT MADE UP MY MIND WHO TO VOTE FOR, BUT NOW IT IS CLEAR AS IT CAN GET, NANCY BURNER.
CHARLES HOWARD
PUYALLUP,WA
Read the comment above that is mine and the other one are wrong, My comments are under the name of
Mike and Ron. And the above ones supporting Darcy
are not mine
Jolie Imperatori
Chrissy, It's not the crime it's the cover up,get it?
Congressman Reichert has experience beyond the Ames Lake Owners club. If Darcy could be honest and answer the questions without just using the talking points given her by the Democrat Congressmans election campaign she might sound electable. As it is she only sounds trite and incompetent.
After watching the Burner and Reichert debate this morning, I would vote for Reichert. I, too, am a Mom and a successful businesswoman. I, too, am involved in my community. But I have to say that anyone who thinks that they can waltz into congress with just those qualifications is naive to say the least.
Dave Reichert is an anti-worker tool to rich GOP politicians. You think he's a regular guy but look at his record. He votes against the minimum wage but for tax breaks for billionaires. He goes along with Bush's weakening of your rights to form a union. He refuses to support Medicare for All. Vote your interests; vote for Burner.
Darcy Burner in congress, scary! That is like letting my eleven year old daughter drive when she doesn't know how, and be indecisive as to which direction to turn.
Dave Reichert is like a George Bush Jr. Look what George Bush has done. Do we really need to have more republicans in office not caring about the concerns of our own citizens?? We need change not more repetition of what we already have.
Darcy Burner has my vote and here's why:
1. She supports energy independence and would invest in new energy alternatives and oppose tax breaks for oil companies (unlike Reichert who voted against raising fuel economy standards)
2. She supports raising the federal minimum wage (unlike Reichert who voted agsint increasing the minimum wage 5 TIMES)
3. She supports environmental protections and has been endorsed by the Sierra Club and other environmental groups (unlike Reichert who voted to roll back the Clean Air Act).
Please vote for Darcy!
Richert says he's pro-life. Pro-life goes beyond our pregnant girls in need of medical help that he announced this morning not to support. But he says yes to fund a war that in growing numbers are killing our young.
Darcy Burner is much needed in congress to protect the ones that are unable to protect themselves.
Darcy Burner has my vote!!
Jolie Imperatori,
Your name appears after your post, not before.
Just trying to help.
VOTE FOR BURNER!! REICHERT HAS BEEN AN UTTER DISAPPOINTMENT AND ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE IS KIDDING THEMSELVES.
I'm going to vote for Burner after the Seattle Times debate and today's horribly moderated King 5 debate. My 5-year old could be more effective in Congress than Reichert.
I agree with the post about the horrible moderator at King 5. Reichert was allowed to be so rude and turn it into his own debate.
Why does Reichert make such an issue out of "she has no experience"?! NEITHER DID YOU, DAVE!!!!!
Just a few comments about todays debate. The way Darcy came across to us, she was debating the president, not Dave on how she feels. She never had a direct answer. What is the busness she said she has? Your either pro or con on abortions. At least Dave stated he is for life, and not wishy washy about it.
It was truly refreshing to see Ms. Burner and Congressman Reichert debate about current issues on TV.
Ms. Burner got my vote for standing up the the congressman when what seemed like an arrogant act of interrupting and demanding explanation while Ms. Burner was outlining her plans and stand on some issues. I thought that was very ungentlemanly of the congressman to do that.
The questions should come from the moderator Robert Mak, not from any one of the candidates. Weren't there rules on that? I wonder.
Thank you Ms. Darcy Burner for representing the women segment of our society and for fighting for women's right to our own bodies, therefore, the right to our own personal decisions! Our choices should be our own, and not dictated by some "moralistic" crusaders who want to take the freedom of choice from us, women.
Way to go Ms. Darcy Burner!
Hilda R. T.
Being "qualified" for political office is just like being "qualified" for a job in the private sector. If Reichert was a manager in a real office, he would have been fired. Being qualified doesn't stop when you walk in the door. Hold him accountable for being out-of-touch with this district.
Mike Brandenburg,
Wrong. COngress created a law that if you get paid over $90,000/year, you DO NOT pay into SSA!
But when these people turn 65 and older, they demand it!
This one is for everyone. Please do your reasearch on ever person you bote for. If they are in office right now, you can get their boting record off of some of the sites, like Congress .org (please remove the space).
Reichert was arrogant, inconsiderate, and rude throughout the debate. King 5's Mak was not up to the job either.
Reichert is nothing but a showboater! During the Green River Murder Trial, a secret back door entrance was secured for Reichert's entry into the courthouse.... but noooooo..... he went right into the front doors to get all the media attention he could to boost his political career. I know, I am related to people on the Sheriff's Dept. The man who actually is responsible for catching Gary Ridgeway is no longer with the Dept. He had the where withall to take a DNA sample of Ridgeway, before DNA was ever used to solve crimes. Instead, Reichert accused a wrong man in Olympia, destroying his life as well as his family's. NO apology from Reichert ever came forth. This is NOT the kind of person I want representing ME.
Dave came across as a senior statesman...not some spoiled little girl from Microsoft that has no idea what anyone wants except her...she would have us believe that she has something to offer....what beside a smart mouth and no plan other than she is against Bush..get a clue little girl you must be for something other than just yourself you would (not) be elected to represent you district not just you and how cool it would be to be a conresswoman...get a clue go out and be part of a campain other than yours being a puppet for the democratic party is not a position...bad luck little girl go find a job you can handel maybe you could be a mgr at Mcdonalds.......
Robert,
It is because mak is just another Republican. And he wants his party in office so that he can get away with everything and blame the other parties.
Here is one question, Why are the parties avoiding the Issues of the Disabled Military coming back from Iraq?
How come we don't hear about how we the people of the United States are going to help them?
Or is Seattle just like Republicans? "We don't care, we have used you and you are now no longer useful?"
Dave Reichert exhibited decisive, smart, logical answers about his political positions while under what appeared to be a biased commentary about his political future from Robert Mac right out of the gate.
I've met Mr. Reichert personally while working in the community and have witnessed his integrity throughout the years in the Seattle area. He is a moral man who works for the people.
Ms. Burner, although to her credit was poised and articulate, made it clear she would raise taxes, deny parental consent in the case of abortion, and clearly doesn't know what to do about Iraq (although in that case, she's not alone). In addition, Dave's service to Washington State speaks for itself, while Ms. Burner's service appears to be "self".
Dave's got my vote!
re:
"Wrong. COngress created a law that if you get paid over $90,000/year, you DO NOT pay into SSA!"
- you are TOTALLY WRONG - what law are you referring to? Everybody pays SS taxes up to preset limits of income - which have increased over the years, currently capped at $90k - income over that amount is still taxed, only not for SS.
Get facts right before you express public views
D Hunt: Wrong? My guess is that you haven't looked at those pay stubs... up to $90,000 you pay like everyone else... after $90,000 you are exempt... Second point would be... yes I can get the voting record off the internet, but, if the candidates are going to make statements of "fact" to "the mass media" they should back them up and not skew the numbers to fit their position.
Thank you Gerry...
The suport I'm seeing for Reichert amazes me, he freely admited to actually thinking he's the "sherif" of washington, This deeply concerns me, He carys him self as a righteous, overzealous policeman. He has the same mentally of Mr Bush, he was rude and pompus in the interview, he interrupted Burner 3 times with an authoritative tone. Reichert struck me as being somewhat errogent and unprofeshional and does not appear to play well with others.
I am not happy with the way things have been going in 'this' State or 'this' Country sence the Bush adminastration came to power. Who cares what Burners plan is to pull out of Iraq.. At least she can see that Americas simply being in Iraq is destorying this Countrys credability and reputation.
I think Burners fresh prespective is Exactly what this State needs. She seems to have a grasp on what regular citicens are going through and less concerned about the wealthy.
I think Reichert is a Great cop and exactly what this State needs however a George Orwell wet dream is not the way I was hoping things would turn out.
Dave Reichert and his Republican cohorts are missing a basic and crucial principal of our form of government when he says that it is up to the President and generals alone to decide how to handle the Iraq war. The current Congress has betrayed their duty to the Constitution in not even investigating the abuses of power that led to the war in the first place and which are continuing to keep our troops there. Without the check on power that Congress should provide, we are no longer a free people, but live under a dictatorship.
Reichert just proved to me that he is the wrong person for the job.He has to learn how to help us here in wa.As far as Burner i hope she can do this for us and i want to give her my vote.I hope she will not let me down.
As a resident of the 8th District and a Microsoft employee, a Group Manager - where Darcy Burner worked, I'm amazed at claims and public references to her as a former Microsoft executive, even from her web site http://www.darcyburner.com/about.php "Darcy went to work for Microsoft in 2000 and became the lead manager for an initiative to change the way software was built."
As for Mr Mak's opening blog saying that he took offense about Darcy's statement about being a gun owner and knowing how to use it, she was stalked in college and wanted to make it known that she was for gun rights. To many times Democrats are painted as "anti gun", or "weak on defense",I applaud Darcy for standing up. I also thought she carried herself well, some of the comments above say she was rude, give me a brake people, all anybody says is that Democrats don't stand up for ourselves, I applaud her on taking a stern voice. My vote is for Darcy and the Democrats. As for social secruity, when that program was established it was to protect our elderly, we need to keep that promise to them and pay our fair share like they did all their lives. I hope Darcy wins.
(ed note: First blog comment is from Ann Corey. Name of the author appears after your post)
to the dr,
The check you speak of was provided and congress did vote. you must have been busy that day. just because you say its not there, doesnt make it so,, and we are free, at least the freest in the world. and it IS up to the pres and generals to run war. That why the Pres is the commander in chief. NOT CONGRESS!
Dave Reichert possess the integrity and ability to represent the 8th congressional district as evidensed by his proven leadership. Our very freedoms continue to depend on the skills he developed during a lifetime of service. Strength, courage, serving with nobility; these all command our respect and support. The debate clearly ampliphied the stark differences between the two candidates, Dave is our superior choice on Nov. 7th.
Wendy
DARCY BURNER HAS MY VOTE:
Working families are paying too much while large corporations and wealthy individuals are not paying their fair share. While Dave Reichert and the Republican leadership blocked attempts to renew important tax relief provisions that help average workers, Darcy at least offers hope for the future. This includes renewing tax breaks for college tuition, research and development conducted by small businesses, school supplies purchased by teachers, and the sales tax deduction for Washington families.
Darcy Burner has my vote.
Being a sheriff does not make one qualified for the job....just take a look at Dave Reichert's ineffective and Bush-hag record in Congress. That man can't stand up against the arrogant leadership and Bush administration. Darcy seems up to the job. In any event, no one could be more of a follower than Dave Reichert. I'm a Republican and I'm voting Darcy.
Mike Brandenburg,
If you have read the law they passed then you would know that what you stated was untrue.
According to the laws on SSA that they passed, anyone who makes over $90,000/year is exempted.
If you make under $90,000/year you have to pay FICA and the Medicare. It is no longer upto $90K/Year. That is they way the NEW law reads.
Now for the Py Increase of Congress. They have been voting them-selves a pay raise of 15% each year. This is NOT the COLA (cost of living allowance) it is a pay raise. This is in Violation of the Constitution of the US. 27th A. of the Consitution states they can only do this once every 2 years after an election.
So if you really want an Unconstitutional person in office, Vote for Dave!
Darcy is intellegent, esperienced in ways that we need in congress, she is fair, she has a real answer for how to get things done and the direction the country is going. Reichert says he is not a politition but articles are comming out now how he petitioned for his own service awards and grandstanded on the Greenriver case, even impeding the investigation with his incompetence, all with an eye on politics. It show in his work or lack there of in congress. Darcy Burner has my vote, and that of my Husband, daughter and son.
Ok people I am out for the day. I have more pressing matters to deal with on the front of Disabled Veteran Issues.
It is great that we can play nice in this debate!
I agree with jessica,, rich corporations are not paying enough,, we need to make em pay and keep payin till we get what we want at their expense. lets tax microsoft and all the really rich ones there at 99% of all the income over 50 thousand bucks... only when we take it all will it be fair. just ask her... she knows
let's see - we now have "the mom in tennis shoes" - Patty, plus "your voice for change" Maria - awarded a multi-million dollar political patronage exec role (w/no qualifications) at Real Networks by demo/savant Rob Glazer after being booted out of office by the voters as our 2 state senators, and some folks want gunslinger Darcy, a former low level marketing staffer for a logo, billed "successful exec" as congressional rep? Republicans are no picnic for the middle class - but looking at our representation and it's easyt to see why things are so screwed up in both Washingtons (DC & state); from a District 8 indepentent voter
Bob,
I can't understand your post. Are you saying that Reichert was correct in voting w/ Bush Republicans for tax-subsidies for big oil companies despite record profits this year?
the point is,, its not YOUR money! if you dont like oil companys making money( that gets paid back to share holders and 401k programs for very many people), then dont buy gas. ride a bike.
Why does no one point out that Dave Reichart took $20,000 from DeLay?!!!
In fact, among Reichert's first votes in Congress was one to weaken the rules of the House Ethics Committee, which has been trying to investigate House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. Reichert also hasn't been shy about seeking financial support from hard-right politicians such Dick Cheney.
Bob,
All I'm saying is that the oil companies should be held to the same antitrust, tax and campaign finance laws as everyone else. Instead, they get Bush and his Congressional lackeys (incl. Reichert) to give them special favors. After all, they were all buds in the oil bid-ness back in Texas.
Tell you what, you can defend the oil companies and everyone who likes $3 gas can vote for Reichert. But if you think something is wrong when ExxonMobil makes record profits and gets $15 BILLION in tax breaks (i.e. subsidies), look at Darcy's platform.
Respectfully, Jessica
Well, it took her less than 10 minutes to become RUDE by talking over Dave.
And she is STILL talking in bullet points. She STILL does not answer direct questions... repeatedly.
She wants to be viewed in light of her being a 'mommy', but she stands against parental consent. Shame on her.
'Ms Burner, what's your plan...?' 'I'm against.. he does... I want.. options.. tweaks...George Bush.. blah, blah blah. but NO PLAN... for anything.
The one thing she excels at is her snotty condescending tone.
I wouldn't vote for her if she was the ONLY one on the ballot.
Go back and get some experience Darcy, raise your child like the good Mom you present yourself to be, get involved (really involved, not just photo op involved) in the 8th district (as opposed to Seattle and San Francisco) and learn to speak with humility and kindness in your voice, drop the talking points and present YOUR point of view (should you actually have one of your own)... and please make a real attempt to actually vote in elections BEFORE you ask others to vote for you.
D Hunt: I apologize, see my intent was to explain that “Washingtonians really do not understand the how and how much of the Social Security is really taken and who and how much is actually being taken from. As I am not aware of the SSA laws changing to the point where over $90,000 per year are completely exempt, I must concede your point.
How can this man chair the subcommitee on Homeland Security???????
Darcy has my vote. Dave Reichert was rude, abrupt, unprofessional and wrong. Darcy Burner was calm, professional, and did a great job handdling the questions from Mr Mak and the rude interruptions from Mr. Reichert. I'm frankly dissapointed that David Mak didn't do a better job in controlling the discussion and adding value as a moderator.
Please, hold Reichert accountable for giving tax breaks to these oil companies that are taking advantage of all of us!
Reichert - Yes on Vote 445 (July 28, 2005): H R 6: Offered tax breaks and incentives in what supporters said was an effort to spur oil and gas companies to provide innovative wasy to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil, conserve resources and reduce pollution.

I agree, David Mak did a terrible job at letting Reichert behave like that and turning it into his personal show. Burner actually knows how to play by the rules and will bring some integrity back into this Congress.
Cheryl,
Let's be accurate here. She said there were situations where parental consent was not appropriate...for example if the child's pregnancy was due to parental rape. And I get tired of people who think anyone who speaks clearly and rationally is snotty. Do we want the less educated in control? Did we need less information before going into Iraq, did we need fewer studies before developing the great homeland security which allow for the Katrina disaster?
I live in Vancouver, Canada and WISH I could vote because hands-down, Reichert is the man. Washington is lucky to have a fellow of this calibre and integrity.
yes let's be accurate. She's supported monetarily ina HUGE way by the NARAL, Emily's list pro-borts.. you both get a 'very nice try' for nuance.
I get tired of being talked down to like I'm an idiot child by the "know better than you" liberal politicians of this state...
Yay for Reichart, Nay on Burner.
You may disagree with what the Republicans are doing, but they are dealing with extremely challenging and complicated world issues. We would all like instant results...but that's not how transformation for a better future works. Do you really think the Democrats have a better solution? I have yet to hear a better game plan from any of them. Go...Reichart! I don't agree with you all the time, but I trust you.
Cheryl,
I assure you I was not talking down to you, I was disagreeing with you. You cannot hear my tone so please don't add it to my words. If we could all take it down a notch and carefully discuss the issues rather than bait and slander one another we wouldn't be so divided in this country and we might actually work together to get something done. Just for your info: I do not have a high level education, I couldn't afford
it but unlike Darcy, who couldn't afford it either since she comes from a working class background and as an army brat moved around a lot, unlike Darcy, I didn't have the grades to earn the scholarships that she earned to put her through Harvard.
Why don't we all just look at the facts? Anybody that voted for Mr. Bush is an idiot, anybody that still suports republicans after what they have done to this country is a blithering idiot and living in a dreamworld with their heads buried in the sand.
One woman made a coment about riding a bicycle in responce to high gas prices. I'm quite sure she drives an SUV, probably has no idea how ludicrous that statement is or how much $3.00 pr. gal. is to sombody that earns $24,000 a year.
Do people like this have the 1st clue what it may be like to have to choose between health insurance and health care over simply ariving to work?
I blame this basic lack of 'understanding' in government on people like this horible woman and wealthy, like-minded politicians.
I think that wealthy people like this should be flipping the bill on everything, paying all the taxes and leave us poor people alone and give us a fighting chance to prosper....
Matt: how dare you presume to accuse me of "right-wing prejudices about women" You know nothing about me. For one thing, there are many very talented and successful women at and from Microsoft and secondly am generally supportive of women – just not including Darcy nor our less qualified ultra liberal state senators and finally, I am an moderate independent not a right winger. I don't believe Darcy’s business accomplishments were viewed as substantial by peers. A group manager is NOT AN EXECUITIVE, as the key point in my statement. Microsoft general managers and vice presidents are considered executives –she was neither.
Nice try, but if you actually read my post, you would have seen the part where I said, "I get tired of being talked down to like I'm an idiot child by the "know better than you" liberal politicians of this state".
The key words were LIBERAL POLITICIANS, not Liberals named Lynn.
Yes, we need "top people" but Darcy isn't one of them. Darcy is a neophyte who has been totally unengaged in the 8th (where I live); she seems to try on and discard jobs, projects and careers (including Mommyhood) the way the rest of us discard old newspapers. I have no reason to beleive she would 'stick' with this one any longer than she has the others. She does not address the questions put to her... she obfuscates, she dances, she recites.. but she never answers.
I KNOW where Dave stands. When he is asked a yes/no question he ANSWERS yes or no.
why are Reichert suporters not bothering to defend the mans behavior on television today?
If this is any indication how he typically opperates, I am very concerned. I do not want people that behave publicly in such a manner representing me or Washington. Clearly Burner has better 'speaking' skills
I agree, Reichert's performance in the Seattle Times debate won him the "Worst Public Speaker Award"...I guess it's more difficult when you have nothing to run on, no successes to speak of and no insight on how to solve today's pressing issues, such as the war, the deficit, or rising health care costs.
*laughing*
Clearly.
Cheryl,
How can you KNOW where Dave stands when he votes both ways on ANWAR and stem cells?! The man votes whatever way the Bush Republican lackey's tell him to.
My vote goes to Burner even though I believe she is a person who has always had a silver spoon in her mouth, and would have trouble understanding the average working family's troubles.
P.S. I am still new to politics and my English puncuation is pretty deplorable so please dont judge my opionion based on my ability to write. However I am more than willing to accept constructive criticism. I belief this is needed to better myself. Thanks (Kinda like an After Action Review)You military guys know what I am talking about.
I couldn't agree more with Gary. I'm going to give Darcy Burner the benefit of the doubt, rather than keep betting on proven ineffective, disengaged, and uninformed incumbent.
And please, WHO CARES that you were the sheriff once????!!!!
Cynthia,
I'm sure that Darcy would not have spoken negatively if there was anything positive to say about Reichert.
I did not see the incident but I can only assume that Reichert was openly acting disrespectfully and unprofessionally as we all saw today on TV
Gary,
Just for clarity,Darcy comes from a working class background. She put herself through school on scholarships. The daughter of an Air force veteran and a public school teacher does not make her a child born with a silver spoon in her mouth.
Mr. Reichert is the wrong person with the wrong attitude to be our 8th district representative in Congress because of his proclivity to settle issues at the point of a gun. He's almost as dangerous as the war-mongering-mass-murderer, George W. Bush, presently occupying the (our) White House. I feel very confident in my beliefs that Mr. Reichert was asleep and Mr Bush was AWOL during Civics Class because they apparently never learned that the Constitution reserves the right to declare war to the Congress and by logical deduction it is therefore up to Congress to stop war, all wars! Throw both these bums out.
There's no sence in arguing, Darcy Clearly won the debate She is obviously a much better 'Speaker'
Reichert has had 2 years to learn how to 'speak' publicly and he proven that it is just somthing he can not do efficiently, with competence or even so much as basic manners.
I am still waiting for a Reichert suporter to defend his outrageous behavior this morning
Let's see, Mrs. Burner would like to raise taxes, she has no plan for Iraq (Other than the typical talking points that she has been following her entire campaign)she doesn't think that Parents should be involved in a huge medical decision for their child and she has no Public Service record. Congressman Reichert did an excellent job keeping to the points and showing the people watching how under qualified Darcy Burner is. He takes a strong stance when needed and uses his influence when needed as well. I especially enjoyed how Darcy chose to dodge the questions. Congressman Reichert has received the endorsement of First Responders (Both Fire and Police) as well as other labor organizations. He received these endorsements because he has done an excellent job across the board. Way to go Congressman Reichert. I am glad that the area finally got to see and understand that you are truly the best candidate for the job.
Kris,Vicki;
And Congressman Reichert had an exit plan for Iraq?..........Plus we know how his tax plan would benefit the rich. I have been a Public Servant for 10 years now, do I deserve to be a Congressman?....Really stop and think about it, you honestly think that just because someone was or is a public servant, they automatically have the public's interest in mind? Cheney is a Public Servant, yet he received several deferments from Vietnam, Rumsfeld is a public servant yet was part of the sale of a Nuclear Reactor to North Korea in 2000, look it up "Two Faces of Rumsfeld"
Thomas White (Picked by Bush as Secretary of The Army) he made millions off of the Enron debocal.Even Clinton had major issues. Just because some is a public servant doesnt mean they are the best person for the Job. We must look beyond whats on paper and more of whats inside.
Where did $90,000 for SSA come from? 2006 is $94,200, 2005 was $90,000, 2004 was $87,900. One should be up to date. Secondly one/all pay SSA on earnings made up to the amount for that year - money earned beyond the Max for the year is not taxed for SSA. However all pay the 1.45%/2.90% for medicare for all monies earned.
Dave Reichert spent 30 years with the King VCounty Sheriff. It took all that time to catch the Green River Killer. The Publicity after he left shows that he did not oversee the department and allowed inefficient and irregular practices to Occur. This was NOT A SUCCESS.
Dave Reichert spent 2 years in Congress and allowed the Bush administration to continue to eradicate our right and fail our troops in Irag. This was NOT A SUCCESS.
Reichert is not representing the citizens of this state. He is a yes man for Bush and his failed policies. VOTE FOR DARCY, SHE IS NOT A RUBBERSTAMP!!
VOTE FOR DARCY, SHE IS NOT A RUBBERSTAMP... except for Nancy Pelosi
My vote goes to Reichert....and people say Bush is a bad speaker...I think the crown goes to Burner..
No middle class person with children should be supporting the Repulican majority, including Dave Reichert. These Borrow-and-Spend Republicans have piled hundreds of BILLIONS in DEBT on the backs of our children.
Burner is right. The rich need to stop slurping at the trough and start paying a fair share just as they did in the 1990s when the budget was in control.
Competency is important in representing this State in the U.S. Congress. Darcy Burner doesn't get it and doesn't have what it takes. Her vocabulary seems to have a strong preference to the word this as in "this congressman," "this congress" and "this president." Send her back to Microsoft, not to Congress!
Reichert is another career politician who is anxious to collect $300k per year to do nothing but talk about the issues. This country needs change or face the consequences. The current administration will someday be just an embarrassing chapter in the history books.
Darcy Burner is exactly what we need in Congress: someone with a fresh perspective whose vote will not be co-opted by the current power structure in Washington.
I have been voting for 46 years. Up to now I have never voted for a Democrat for congress. But this time Burner will get my vote. A breath of fresh air.
I think the biggest issue is that Mr. Reichert continues to express the fact he makes major decisions according to his faith. People we need a representative who put aside his faith and make the tough choices no matter what his/her beliefs. Mr. Reichert appears to be out of touch with the "common" person, that is not to say Mrs. Burner has some real issues also...but I must mention this; we all have to start somewhere.
All of Darcy Burner's commercials are used to bash on her opponent. Anyone see something wrong about that, or is it just me?
Darcy's the one for me! Dave has nothing else to say except tax cut, tax cut... The right has had 6 years to louse it all up, If you want things to change - vote DEMOCRAT!
Prior to watching the debate I was leaning for Reichert... but having watched him speak raises new concerns in my mind. He really seemed like an overbearing attack dog and I wanted to see more class. But Burner has not convinced me that she has the stuff to make the changes needed.
Darcy Burner has it all over Reichert. He evaded the questions you asked, and when he did answer, he figured : "let's get more information" instead of taking a real stand. He waffles on gloal warming. Reichert wants to write a blank check for Iraq, to an open ended commitment in Iraq, yet he condemns Ms Burner for wanting to honor a commitmnet our gov't has for our citizens in their retirement.
Obviously, I am a firm supported of Ms Burner. I want a congressperson who has a brain.
We need a change and Ms. Burner is the way for us in the 8th district to make that known. She is smart and can speak in a clear and concise manner.
I will vote fr Burner!!
Darcy Burner didn't answer several of the questions posed to her despite Robert Mak's help. She also wants freedom of choice on abortion, but NOT freedom of choice for social security. You can't have it both ways. My vote is for DAVE REICHERT!
Mike,
Thank you. The law I was talkinga bout was passed about 4 months ago in closed session of Congress, by republicans. I will try to get the site for you. Because of my training I am privy to some information that others don't want to be put in public.
Darcy Burner gets my vote.
Darcy Burner failed to answer any questions, she simply talked in circles.
I dont like what Republicans have done to this country but the Democrats have no one to compete. This lady got shot down and shipped out. You never admit to raising taxes, its a death sentence to your career. Would someone please call Robin Williams and ask him to seriusly run, at least then we be would entertained!
Sorry Dave you got my vote last time but I am voting for Darcy Burner. The Republican congress is out of control and needs to be checked. If unsure about Reichert, check out his past voting record, it is clear he is bought and sold to the K street lobby and the Republican agenda For and by the RICH. I have listened to Darcy for some time and she represents my views and will put some balance back into the other Washington.
BTW Dave, Social Security is not a tax. It is insurance that every American needs and wants. For those that are disabled, dies with dependents and old age pension to keep Americans out of poverty. In case you haven't noticed all insurance rates have drastically increased under the Bush Administration, But not the premium for Social Security Insurance... So perhaps raising the limit is a good answer. Those that earn more can afford to pay more.
Ms Burner has the courage to stand up for working class America. And yes, that might mean more taxes for those making over $250K and let those trying to survive on $50 -$70K get a break. Reichert relies on his "public service", I believe he received a paycheck; I believe that is called a job. Volunteers fit in a commitment to that organization, after their job commitment; it's not easy - it takes commitment and compassion. I find it insulting that he negates that activity.
It was also rude of Reichert to continue to talk over Ms. Burner. It gave me the impression that if she finished, he woulndn't be able to respond.
My view of Ms. Burner as a well rehearsed puppet was reenforced after watching her performance on tonight's "Up Front". I don't get the feeling that she really knows (or cares?) what the job is really all about.
Darcy Burner gets my vote. Not only do her ideas, such as raising the cap on SS sound like some much needed pragmatic business sense, but her guide is to benefit the working, middle class family.
Besides, my son, 13 years old, last week politely asked Reichert a question about his two different votes regarding Alaska drilling. Once Reichert heard the question, he was rude, didn't even answer and walked off. This told me once in office, we can count on Reichert to only answer the questions that make him look good. By my reckoning,we've had entirely too much of that noise in our Congress for the past 6 years. It's time for a change.
And yes, I can't wait to vote.
One thing I have never heard anyone challenge Rechert on is his repeated claim that the tax cuts have created 5 million new jobs over the last 5 years.
In reality, the normal "churn" of business, laying off and hiring, generally accounts for about 1 million "new" jobs a year. So the net result is that this Administration has created NO really new jobs.
In addition, median real wages fell more than 6% between 2001 and 2004, according to the Federal Reserve.
We've watched the Republicans wreak havoc on our country for the last eight years. We've watched the national debt reach 8.6 trilion dolars an all time record. We've watched while our country debated torture of our prisoners. We've watched the corruption in our congress with members sentenced to jail terms. We've watched while this administration led us with lies into a war of aggression against a small impoverished country. We've watched while the government spent more on machines for killing than the entire rest of the world combined.
The list goes on and on. How about the environment, alternative engergy sources, stagnating wages for the middle class etc etc.
These are the reasons to vote for Darcy. We need to get rid of Bush rubber stamps in congress.
I just finished watching the Reichert/Burner debate and I must say I am amazed that Burner is the best that the Democrats can come up with. She came across like a sixth grader parroting everything her parents told her to say. No wonder the Seattle Times endorsed Reichert. The fact that she hasn't even taken her own voting responsibility seriously since the year 2000 speaks volumes. It should be no contest, but then there are those who will vote Democratic no matter what. That is their right, but it is too bad.
Being a middle class American - I can not stand or support the Democratic platform of higher taxes and more spending, it seems to me that Darcy has no clue of what a budget is and how to manage it. She continues to waffle back and forth on taxes as evident by her Social Security taxation program. I like the experience that Reichert brings to the office and I will vote for him again.
Can someone help with Nancy Burner's positions?
She said she would not raise taxes when first asked. Then at the end, she was said see would raise taxes to help fix social security.
Did she ever give an answer whethter she would let the current tax breaks expire?
What was her answer on getting out of Iraq? Do we pull the troops out now? Do they need a stable government? What is her plan for success in Iraq?
Does coaching YMCA sports make you qualified to run for an important congressional seat?
Please develop some clear positions on the issues before you debate your opponent. Bush bashing is not a well thought out plan. I guess I will vote for Dave.
Reich didn't do public service he was a public servant and he failed at that. i'm not willing to let him flail away at the 8th district position for 20 years to get this job done. he wants to let what is left of the middle class to do the heavy lifting. yes to tax relief for wealthy, yes to deficit spending, no to increased minimum wage, no to stem cell research. no backbone. when he touts 5 million new jobs since 2003 why doesn't he get asked the pay scale of those newly created gop jobs. no wonder they want guest worker programs. out with the same old... in with the willing. our family votes darcy
Baby-Fat Burner is a terrible mother! She wants to go off to DC rather than nurtering her own child. How is this young kid going to make good decisions in the House when she's already chosen to make a very bad decision with her own house! Poor Henry! I guess he'll be in and out of the criminal justice system.
Life is a sacred thing that shouldn't be taken away. If this woman is not silenced, then we will have more murders that are legal. We don't need another holocaust.
Darcy is new to the business of politics, admittedly, but I was impressed at how well she held her own against a 30+ year institution such as Reichert.
So yea im pretty sure that not everything in the world is fair or equal that is why our system works....Because not every one is equal if we were all equal that would make us socialist why should a person that works hard for the 100,000 dollars a year be punished for there hard work, if you want more money work harder and try to better your self.... Im 20 years old and I know that...come one people use your heads and realize that life isn't fair and that we should not give free rides...
Republicans, Democrats, Politics, Women - NO
Honest, Belivers, Truepenny, Mankind - YES
Darcy Burner is the dictionary definition of a "liberal" . . . I call them Socialists. Take from the successful and give to the unsuccessful. Punish the people who have worked hard to support their families, and give it all away to the deadbeat losers.
Dave Reichart has my vote and the right process of decision making to make a positive impact for this area. He does represent the majority of American citizens with a sane attitude toward what is important to us. All I heard Darcy say was that she wants to change everything without a plan for anything, but just to Bush bash as is the democrat way along with more of the same lack of any concrete idea.
Darcy would be a good candidate for a city councilwoman. She would definitely get my vote. But she's running for a bigger office. I am neither a Republican or Democrat, I vote for the person best suited for the job and in this race for any informed independent voter such as I, would be Congressman Reichert. It's too bad Democrats will just vote for Darcy because she's running on their ticket. We have too many puppets in Congress now, we don't need another one. Reichert has shown that he does not support President Bush 100%. He has my family's vote.

Vote for Dave or pay, pay, pay in many ways.
In OFFICE:
Honest, Belivers, Truepenny, Mankind - YES
Republicans, Democrats, Politics, Women - NO
Honest, Belivers, Truepenny, Mankind - YES

Dave Reichart has many good years of public service. Unfortunately it does not translate to good leadership or good representation for the 8th district. Dave Reichart mentioned oversight committees as a tool that congress can use. The republican lead congress has ceded its power by not exercising that option. I feel Rep.
So Dave has seen a top-secret report on Iraq and Darcie hasn't - and that's why we should trust Dave. Give us a break. And if Iraq is having a civil war, Darcie thinks we then can't leave - maybe send in more troops? Did I get that right?
If you question Reichert's campaign funds why not question Darcy's campaign funds? Why is most of her money coming from out of state rich?
Why wouldnt Darcy answer ANY of the questions? As someone said above, she is willing to leave her family and head to Congress to work with people she loathes (conservatives and President Bush) and considers criminals.
She is disingenuous at best.
She has also never addressed that "executive" title that she bestowed upon herself from Microsoft. The problem for most of us is that she already sounds like a politician and has been coached to bob and weave; Dems never answer a question honestly because they cant.
This is why Reichart will hold his seat come next month.
regarding social security:
here's how it works, since this simple minded leftie cant seem to grasp it.
say you make $150,000 a year. for about 7 months of the year, you'll be getting SS taxes taken out of your paycheck. once august hits, you get a 'raise' (from your own money, no less) and the govt lets you keep that 'extra pay' ..
come january, you are back to paying SS taxes. so yes, every single American making MORE THAN 90,000 dollars a year pays the MOST taxes - those making less than about 26,000 do NOT pay taxes..
hows that grab ya now Leftie?
*hat tip to Mike and Jerry for trying to educate some mixed up people*
half nelson,
I have done more hen most on this subject.
I have friends who work for SSA and I use to work as an advocate.
Dave did very well. Darcy cannot answer questions with specifics. Too bad for her.
My vote is for Dave who has year of experience, is not bitter, and leads.
Dave Reichert did a good job as King County Sherrif, but I do not believe he has done a good job of representing the people of the 8th Congressional District in Congress. The majority of voters in the 8th are not in favor of Bush's war of choice. The majority of voters in the 8th recognize global warming and the damage it is causing our evnironment. It is time for a change. My vote is for Darcy Burner!
Dave Reichert is a caring man. He cares about other people, you can see it in his eyes. He takes his job seriously. He speaks from the heart with passion and honesty. For those who cannot see that you must examine your heart and mind because I fear that you are being close minded. I went to the seattle times debate between Congressman Reichert and Darcy Burner. Dave Reichert is a good man and that is why he will be our Congressman for another two years!!!
Thanks to King 5 for airing the debate. Dave Reichert came across as the experienced, principled individual that I know him to be. Darcy Burner showed very little grasp of the issues other than a reliance on platitudes.
I did not appreciate Congressman Reichert's smug attitude. He also seemed defensive and scared. I think that the only way this country is going to get back on track is if our politician stop making excuses everytime they are confronted by anyone who has a different view. If he can learn a little humility (alone with the rest of the republican party), more people will be inclined to vote his way. I have issues with those who think they are morally superior. Pro-choice is not pro-abortion; I would like to know what medical school the congressman went to, since he believes that he should have a say in what decisions a women can make in regards to her health in the privacy of her doctor's office. He does not get my vote.
After following the campaign, watching the debates, and doing research, I am strongly behind our current Congressman, Dave Reichert. I am a strongly independent voter who is always looking for an independent voice. Mr. Reichert leans conservatively, but has proven that he not only can be but IS an independent voice. Ms. Burner's views are line for line liberal party spin. It also comes through in her mis-representation of Mr. Reichert. Luckily, some of us are willing to research and seperate the lies from the truthes. MR. REICHERT has my vote to continue as my congressman in the 8th District.
From what I could tell, Darcy Burner has no energy and only spouts the Democrat party line. I heard no solutions for anything. All I heard from her was that we need to change the course for the country, which are the exact words I hear from all of the other obscure Democrats that are interviewed on the news. Dave Reichert has her lifetime of experience and knows what security and safety means! If we "change course" now I believe we will put our selves in grave danger.
Ben, these are your opinions. You have no basis for this information (which explains why you are so wrong) Do you know the Congressman? If you did, you would know that everything you said is a falcity. You could not be more wrong. Congressman Reichert is the independant choice out of the two. Do you honestly think that Burner will not vote the democratic party line every time she votes (which may not be very often) who is more comitted to the people of the 8th district and concerned about their welfare? It is a clear choic. Congressman Dave Reichert wins hands down!!!!
Corinne, these are your opinions. Frankly, I agree with Ben. Also, I found Congressman Reichert to be rude, disrespectful and just plain stupid in this debate. All he can do is go on and on about his service as sheriff. I for one am not impressed and I can't see that this experience qualifies him to represent the people of the 8th district.
Corinne the magic button is F7. It's not solely about independence; it is about changing something that is fundamentally wrong. Unfortunately Dave isn't going to be able to help change it this time around. Send someone to represent the 8th in the east instead of representing the east in the 8th.
Well our good friend Ben the serial Burner Blogger is at it again. Paid hack?, campaign worker? I really do not care, on other sites he has proven to be truth challenged. When Ron Sims wanted to put Sex Offender Housing in the 8th out by Carnation, where was Burner? Out supporting her "community"? nope. Reichert came to the meeting and took the heat, and answered the hard questions even though he didn't agree with Sims. Same thing when Ron tried to put it in North Bend.
Hey Darcy, what do you think of the levy removal at park in Carnation? Will you vote? I am voting against you because you have PROVEN to be an ineffective community member. You simply do not deserve the position.
Actually ben, I have a job and something better to do than blog all day long. Opinions are different than finding the facts. You and Linda are blinded, you have nothing to stand on and that's why you attack Dave Reichert and call names. Linda I think you couldnt be more wrong, I watched Dave's actions in the debate. He was very polite, he was always respectful of the person, and he didn't sound like a repetative robot. He didn't memorize or recite answers. Why is Darcy always talking about being an executive at microsoft when she was really in a starting position? At least Dave is telling the truth and has nothing to hide.
It was a rout: Rep. Reichert by three touchdowns.
Corrinne & Huh? - you have anything to add to the conversation that is constructive and not derisive? I'll take your bait this once. Like you, I too have a job and it's not affiliated with any candidate or party or political organization. I did listen to the debate and felt compelled to comment on the board the same as most everyone here. This is the first time I've posted here or anywhere regarding the race.
It makes it a bad decision to send him to the House at this time. That's all, you can take it from there.
Ben thanks for admitting that Darcy and her cohorts were wrong and purposefully creating a false impression of what congressman Reichert said by editing the tape. Again, since she has no record of postiive acomplishments on her own within the community, we are obliged to observe who she aligns herself with and how she behaves during the campaign. Darcy Burner is unqualified for the postion, and willing to let people attack, lie and spread hate in her name without rebuke.
Bottom line:
Dave Reihert is a documented liar.
Dave is ignorant
Dave does not represent Washington state law
Nice Rep..................
The only documented liar we have in this race is Darcy Burner"....AH...Ah..you'll have to talk to my staff...." You could read it all over her face on the news last night.
Sight one instance of proof that Congressman Dave Reichert has lied!!!
Give proof not your opinion....Or do you give proof like Darcy Burner, by omitting the pieces you don't want to be true.
my vote is with dave he has way more experience and will not raise every tax he can think of like darcy
I'm glad people in Seattle and other US Congressional districts can't vote in this race. Darcy seems to be well funded by them, that's for sure!
On the east side we need to get out the vote!!!
Dave represents our values. Not the corrupt Democrat Seattle line.
The bottom line is that Reichert is a rubber stamp for Bush, he needs to get out of the Bushes and reprensent the district and our state. Just because you were a SWAT commando and sheriff does not make a good politician, that stuff is getting way to much play in politics today. My vote is for change and for Darcy Burner. Hopefully these last two weeks the Republicans and Reichert won't SWIFT BOAT Darcy and play dirty politics, I would think the former sheriff would know better.
Darcy Burner is unqualified for the office that she seeks. She claims to have been involved in her community and yet she is a virtual unknown in the Snoqualmie Valley. She is certified by King County to have missed over 40% of the opportunities that she had to vote over the last 6 years. She has embraced the likes of David Goldstein at the Horses Ass.com as her champion, accepting his praise, his air time and his funding. She obviously approves of his F-bomb throwing vitriol, which is a true indicator of her character or lack thereof.
Darcy is a fiction of the Democratic party and a manifestation of what is wrong with much of American society today. No service, no character, no integrity and willing to use whatever means necessary to get ahead. She is a pathetic userious shell of a candidate. Hopefully the citizens of the 8th will see through the facade.
Reichert was rude. He did nothing but interrupt Darcy.
I dont know what Dave was trying to accomplish when he said FEMA.
Darcy's arguement was a referendum on Bushs policies, and all Reichert could say is that hes qualified and that bes been a congressman for 2 years.
By the way, the Military doesnt belong to Republicans, so dont use them as a bullet proof vest.
They dont belong to your flawed, falied point of view and the American people dont buy it.
Too bad for Bush the thing he was "Good" at he now fails (War on Terror) at and the thing he failed(War In Iraq) at will cost his party control.
Simply blow along with Hurricane Katrina over to Burner's Campaign website and make sure you hit the link to the Horses Ass. Now call all of your kids in the room and toggle through the posts. Make sure your kids know what kind of people support Mrs. Burner...now aren't you proud!
Carl
Burner: New, Bright, Good Ideas and, obviously one who has the abilty to think above the status quo.
Reichert: Cop in Dress Blues with a good haircut.
