Who is Mike McGavick?

What do you think of his plan for Social Security?
Republican Senate candidate Mike McGavick is floating two ideas for solving our Social Security problem. First, he would ask wealthy Americans to voluntarily return their benefits. Second, he would create "personal accounts." He says these are different than President Bush's plan for "privatization," in that the accounts would be managed by the federal government--but the money could still be invested. Here's the question we didn't get to in the time we had. If we allow people to put money in personal accounts, does that create a bigger crisis immediately, because there's less money for current retirees? McGavick says no, all the money is still in a "pool." But then, what's the point of having a personal account? Is it that much different than the way Social Security does it right now--sending you a statement saying how much you'd be entitled to at retirement? Share your thoughts, and feel free to add any other comments on the McGavick interview.

sorry, he just doesn't fly with me. his ads are all about how he doesn't just follow party lines and yet when asked about iraq, that is exactly what he espoused, party rhetoric. his "wrong minded" phrase sounds karl rove to me, scarey.

Wealthy Americans should consider giving back their Social Security benefits about the same time Mr. McGavick considers giving back the $28.4M golden parachute he got from Safeco. A better solution would be to do away with the annual cap on Social Security withdrawls from salaries.

Quickly: This guy scares me. He says that "Maria Cantwell" herself is the reason behind him being followed w/ video and tracking his career at Safeco (and his golden egg, how many people laid off?), among other problematic situations for McGavick. Sorry, Mike...it does matter and it isn't Cantwell following you! Cantwell has been smart to avoid commenting on his DUI and other traps to engage her in McGavick's plan to unfocus her on the issues. It was, in fact, Cantwell that stayed back in DC to cast her senate votes (in other words, "WORKING") while Clinton helped to campaign for her. I laughed out loud when I heard his ad about him mom and the skateboard...honesty? I think this is the most dishonest candidate I've seen so far.

I just finished watching Mike McGavick on UpFront and thought I might be recasting my vote for him instead of Cantwell but feel differently after watching tonight. He's defensive, tried to control the interview, & left me with more questions than answers. I was surprised to learn about him laying off so many employees at Safeco.

I thought Robert let him off the hook several times when he could have pressed for "real" answers.

McGavick talks a lot about civility but Mak never asked him about the US Chamber of Commerce ads a few months ago showing Cantwell's head on a vulture body. Oh, of course, that wasn't from McGavick's campaign. But "independent" organizations like the 527's are the GOP's new slime machine, and you are never going to convince me they are "independent."

Right now there is a new 527 called the Economic Freedom Fund being bankrolled by Republican activist and Tom DeLay friend Bob Perry. If the name sounds familiar, it is because he was one of the main backers of the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth. This group has been doing push-polling and slime attacks in WA and other states. I'd like to hear what McGavick has to say about these groups.

Second, when Mak asked about the budget deficit, McGavick tried to blame it on Social Security. Sorry, Mike, it's the occupation of Iraq. We ran budget surpluses all through the Clinton years and Social Security hasn't changed that much since then.

Third, McGavick says we are safer because we are fighting the terrorists in Iraq rather than here. If we weren't fighting them there, we would have to fight them here.

I guess the logic is that, as long as we are destroying someone else's country, that's okay. I don't think the 100,000 dead Iraqis would agree. Remember, even Bush admitted that Iraq had nothing to do with the terrorist attack on 9/11. But we're still destroying their country as a diversion. And once again, Mak didn't press him on it.

If Robert Mak doesn't start throwing some harder pitches at these people, I'm not going to bother watching.

Honestly, I did not see the interview and cannot comment on it however, I have yet to see any candidate, on either side, in any state, in any interview, EVER give straight answers to tough questions...They always do a tap dance even on yes or no questions. The bottom line here is, you have to sift through the bull and somewhere within, the truth shall lie.

Here is a man who tells us that Congress is broken, points out that the Senate voted themselves a pay raise, and speaks of how he saved Safeco from bankruptcy. Well, his record shows that he turned Safeco around at the expense of workers who lost their jobs, lost their healthcare benefits, and retirees who got the bad end of the stick. Does he mention that while he was cutting corners, he gave himself a pay raise, lots of multi-million dollar bonuses, and took a loan from Safeco for $1,000,000 that he has yet to repay. This is the same type of loan that has since been made illegal, so that proves he is less than ethical. This is not the type of person who has the working class of Washington State in his best interest.

Mike, what can I say about him and his Staff. I have found that his staff has been removing dem. campain signs when they are puttin up his signs. He still after 4 months has NOT address any question that I have asked,(these were NOT hard questions to answer). And his Ads, to me are a Joke. Is he trying to run for President? Or was it Senate. He is a Former (retired) CEO. He has NEVER taken a pay Cut nor will he ever take a paycut. Hell he has alway taken pay increases ans other items to maintain his overpaied, status of his.
It make me mad that he has NEVER had a face to face with Veterans. Has Never invited us to a Veterans Forum with him, and has NEVER Answered question form Disabled Veterans.
I know this is only one group that I have put on the board, but it make me think, why is he hiding from Veterans and others, when he will only speak to people who sign an allegance with the GOP.

I guess if he is elected, we can look forward to 50% or higher insurance costs, worse Medical, NO education and more Veterans on the street due to massive cuts in the VA budget!
