The politics of justice

| Who's playing politics with the State Supreme Court? |
Some people have expressed outrage that the Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW) is playing such a big role this year--contributing, endorsing and supporting its candidates for State Supreme Court. But Erin Shannon with the BIAW makes this point: If justices are elected, there's no avoiding the politics. She asks, why shouldn't the BIAW participate in judicial races, just as it does in legislative races? Historically, we've had the perception that Supreme Court justices should be above the fray, but as long as they're elected, is some degree of politics unavoidable? Or are we headed down a dangerous road? Is it time to appoint justices instead?
And speaking of politics, the race for Position #2, there's been a lot of speculation about why Michael Johnson, a Seattle attorney entered the race. In our interview, Johnson flatly denies that he's using his last name to confuse voters, who will also see Senator Stephen Johnson's name on the ballot. But Michael Johnson has given some conflicting stories about his conversations with the Owens campaign and political consultants working on Owens' behalf. What we know is this: a political consultant did call and encourage Michael Johnson to run. But who tipped the consultant that Michael Johnson was thinking about running? It's some pretty intriguing inside politics in a race that gets relatively little attention normally.

When you posted some of the stats, referring to Tom Chambers, I found out he was a successful PERSONAL INJURY lawyer or many years....too bad you couldn't disclose that fact. Or the fact that he was in a motorcycle accident with a female (NOT HIS WIFE who was out of the country on humanitarian work) who ended up with a broken collarbone and OOPPS!!! he forgot to report this accident to the authorities. Yes, I believe the judicial races are more political only because the Democrats and MOST MAJOR MEDIA(tv,newspapers, etc) want specific judges on the bench who can't seem to remember what our Wa.St.Constitution is there for. I believe the Republicans WANT a sitting judge NOT to make it their personnal stage to make up new laws and edicts., and instead, abide strictly to our Constitution Thanks Marsha Kriney

All judges, and politicians, do not want to state where they stand on current issues. They believe the less they say . . . . the less likely it is that they will say something that prompts a voter to vote against them.
So they make lame excuses for why they will not state where they stand on current issues.
Therefore, King 5 could help the voters -- by listing all of the cases that have come before the Washington State Supreme Court in the last 4 years -- and list how each of the 9 State Supreme Court Justices voted on each of the issues.
King 5 should design the above described chart with search features to enable the voter who is seeking genuine answers to search:
To search by issues,
To search by "toughness" on crime,
To search by political party alignment,
To search what political groups are funding each of the 9 State Supreme Court Justices,
To search the amount of money given to each Justice by each supporting group,
To identify each time the Justices are acting like "Activist Judges,"
To identify each time the Justices are legislating from the bench,
To identify each Justice who is a strict constitutionist in interpreting our constitution.
Providing the above described "Indepth Comparison Chart of the Voting Records of the Nine State Supreme Court Justices"
is the only way the voters can determine the agenda, the bias, and the intent of each of the Justices -- to help the voters decide who is worthy to serve as a State Supreme Court Justice.
King 5, you have the ability to provide this requested information. Please step up to the plate and deliver it to the voters.
Thank You,
A Very Concerned Voter

Why is the problem of big business meddling in government getting more prolific over time? Not too difficult to figure out. Look no further than liberal democrats. These traitors to our nation have alllowed judges to make laws behind the bench. More commonly refered to "judicial activism" which is a gross violation of the constitution separating the legislative branch of government from the judicial. So the real question is, how much different is this example from what King 5's article is about? Not much at all ! It is neither surprising either.

After watching your coverage Sunday morning, I am sick of Judge Alexander trying to make sense out of the Andress decision. Would a reasonable person like you or I allow over 300 convicted murderers to walk out of prison? The killer of my 2 1/2 year old grandaughter was tried by a jury and sentenced in March 2001 to 23 years, but now this sentence is being reduced because five Supreme Court justices overturned the conviction in a ruling called State vs Andress. Under this ruling, the definition of felony murder was changed. Convicted killers have now been charged with lesser crimes like manslaughter, which carry a much lighter sentence. Victims deserve justice; we deserve justice. Justice Gerry Alexander was one of those who voted in favor of freeing killers, many of whom have already been released and are walking the streets. Justice Alexander is NOT a reasonable person. I hope voters in Washington State pay close attention to the choices they are making for this and other Supreme Court justice positions. It could have impact on you and your family's lives in ways that you can never imagine. To see a Supreme Court judge, who should be committed to being "fair and impartial" continue to ask voters for their approval is a direct and painful insult to our family and others impacted by the Supreme Court's decision changing the definition of felony murder. Robert, maybe you can't say this, but I will say it to WA State voters: PLEASE VOTE carefully – If THEY DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK, THEN THEY DO NOT DESERVE TO BE ELECTED TO REPRESENT YOU.

I have become so disgusted by the Groan ads on TV every ten minutes, that I hit the "mute" button whenever they start. Of course he is responsible for the smears. Pretending he's above it all is ridiculous! These gutter ads show a lot about Groan's character. A group putting a million in a campaign can expect favorable decisions. I want a fair and impartial court and not one bought by special interests. There are too many like Groan running with no judicial experience (the only exception currently running was so notoriously terrible on the bench, she was voted off after one term). These dirty campaigns have made most of us cynical. Public financing of campaigns is necessary and a must. My vote goes to Alexander, Owens and Chambers.

Hey Robert, The soon to be ex-congressman is in a place of serious woe. He climbed on a "band wagon" when it was on "full tilt," with his party. Now his record, and the "Glutinous, Oil, Pedophile," party will force him to make his future "stump speeches" at the Unemployment Office. The American People have been lied to long enough! Go Darcy Go!
