Who's going back to Washington?

With the President's low approval ratings, Democrats see an opening.
As a candidate, Dave Reichert has many advantages. As the former Sheriff, he has nearly universal name recognition in the 8th Congressional district. As the incumbent, he has a large fundraising advantage. And let's face it--he's a telegenic candidate with a natural campaign instinct.

Democratic challenger Darcy Burner has a few handicaps. She has proven herself a good fundraiser but she's still being outspent. She has plenty of work ahead on getting people in the district to know her name. And, she has never before run for political office. That said, her enthusiasm is tangible. And if this is a good year for Democrats nationwide, is it possible a former Microsoft manager and working mom could be a serious contender?

Meanwhile, the situation in Snohomish county in the 2nd district is reversed. The incumbent is a Democrat--Rick Larsen. The challenger is a Republican--Doug Roulstone, a former navy captain and small businessman who's also making his first run at political office.

The stage is set. Any predictions? Will national trends affect the outcomes or are these really local elections?

Glad to see the exposure of how much tax payer money is being spent by Dave Reichert on those ridiculous "working for you" mailings we continue to receive. That's expensive recycling.

He asked you how to reach his constituency. Not a difficult answer....post your information on your congressional web page. Maria Cantwell does broadcast emails, which works really well to keep the voters informed on her work.

We need a much more fiscally intelligent person in Dave's seat.

Cathy Allen is a sharp commentator and fun, but today she missed a lot of very key facts, while wasting time on the point that Candidates are scarce because it's hard to beat an incumbent... I don't get it. you had Two republican commentators!

The KEY points in Congr. Dist. 8 are:
1. Republicans vote as a bloc, no matter how much you like them personally. Bush and Cheney among others have made personal trips to Bellevue to campaign for Reichert. DUH! Come on Cathy, get on the stick.
2. The REPUBLICANS have added trillions to the national debt. This is disastrous. Any thinking person must be concerned. And for what? For tax cuts to the top 1% of the rich, many of whom have said they don't even want it.
3. The REPUBLICANS have given you two completely illegal wars, and promise to bring you more, if they are approved with re-elections.

Dave Reichert
Working for me? I belong to a few Veterans Groups, where were his comments when our information was stolden? And how about this one. We sent a deleagtion to DC and Reichert's office said NO to a visit from us. Nice to see Dave doesn't like Disabled Veterans (or Veterans in general). I can't see why anyone would want to put this person back into office. For him it is Government as usual and forget about the district and the real people in the 8TH. I would love to see Reichert questioned by some of us real people where he has to adlib and have that on the NEWS!
Oh and one more item, he is making it harder to freeze your credit, making it easier for ID theif to get away with crimes. (and this peron use to be in law enforcement?).

Here is a person that is not here for the real person, just his own paycheck!

I find this topic fascinating and will avoid the talking points and vague accusations that seem prevalent in discussing politics.

First, I think the key in the 9th is that the Democratic candidate is wealthy and is fundraising to a degree that will make her competitive. She has connections, money, and the strong backing of the party in a competitive race.

This will all help her overcome the fact that no one knows who she is. Name recognition is low and lack of experience at any level is evident. The fact this will be a democratic year, she follows the example in Washington of powerful strong women candidates, and she is articulate and she will give Reichert a run for his money.

At this point though Reichert still has the advantage. He has more money, more name recognition, and is a republican leaning district. (although could go easily democratic) The national Republicans faced with the loss of the House will pour money into his campaign and he has a better resume prior to holding elected office.

It will remain to be seen if he can accept Republican help while at the same time showing his indpendence. Reichert needs an issue he can break with the President on so that he can highlight his independence. If he is viewed as a lapdog for the leadership he will be in real trouble. My prediction it will be closer than 51 to 49%. Hang on.

Robert -- I really enjoy your program. It's hard to get a good local perspective on politics, and I commend you for trying to be fair.

In this instance, I think you showed Reichert in a bad light -- but made up for it by showing him in contrast to his challenger on the stump. The Sheriff is not only well-known in this Washington, he's a rising star in D.C. as well. Why?

Because he's the real deal. Tough as nails, listens to you patiently while you talk (attributable to being a cop) and then willing to look you in the eye and tell you exactly what he thinks!

Dave wasn't privilged enough to go to Harvard or work some cush job for Microsoft. He grew up as the oldest child in a big family (in a small house in Renton), protecting his younger siblings from a bad situation invovling domestic violence at home.

Dave's sharp -- and has good instincts; he's principled and has a servant's heart -- all good traits in a cop, and equally admirable in a Congressman.

Your viewers see how well liked and well-known he is in his own district, but that actually extends statewide. I think Pebble was right, Burner doesn't have a primary challenger to test her, she's corny on the stump and suffers from a near TOTAL lack of previous community service/involvement.

My prediction is Dave takes the race easily, winning by six or more points, perhaps to 53 - 47%.

I'm fed up with both the Republicans and the Democrats. The Republicans have overspent and many Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Maria Cantwell are voting for the Iraq war.
I'm voting Libertarian.
They are socially tolerant and fiscally responsible. Just what we need today.
And I don't even care if they don't win.
I just want to feel good about my vote for a change. I can no longer hold my nose and vote for the lesser of two evils.
I'm going to vote my values.

I find this all very hypocritical and agenda driven.

Larson has spent almost as much as Reichert, but this piece was directly targeted at Reichert and gave extended coverage to his opponent while Larsons opponent wasn't even mentioned.

Inslee sends these pieces out as well, nearly as much as the other two, despite the fact his seat isn't considered in danger.

During last falls King County Council races Carolyn Edmonds spent most of her office budget sending out hundreds of thousands of these glossy promotional pieces. Every week, right up till the deadline, you got a "phone list" or some other worthless bit of information tucked into a huge Carolyn Edmonds ad.

No one in the media was the least bit interested in her actions then, so why is it suddenly an issue in this one race?

Last this idea that Reichert is bad because he "votes as a bloc" with his party is one of the most amazingly hypocritical statements that can be made since those who are elected from the "other party" vote as a bloc as well. If anyone thinks his opponent wouldn't vote as a bloc with her party line is kidding themselves.

I have no problem with people having different viewpoints and supporting the candidates that think the way they do, but can't we have a LOT less hypocrisy and a little honest discusion about ISSUES rather than all these hidden agenda hit pieces?

What difference does it make? Seems all these politicians are interested in is making a name for themselves or lining their pockets and their cronies pockets.

This may be a good year for democrats? Keep dreaming. After the marriage issue nation-wide and now in this state, with the liberal anti-war attitude, with the intrangegant attitudes from democratic liberals concerning the raising of taxes for private interest, ie the new stadium, unneccessary and excessive funding of education, and the outrageously stupid idea social security does not need an overhaul, it will be a cold day in hell before democrats get a majority seating again anywhere in this country. The liberal media plays out the rating figures on the president and his constituants for only one purpose. To lie, decieve, slander, and smear one of the greatest administrations this nation has known since George Washington. Remember, Christine Gregoir won the governors election by only a handful of votes and ballot fraud. We have an illegitamate governor in office, instead of Dino Rossi. This is how democrats win elections and increase their ratings. Your not fooling anyone !

ionolsen22 Your site is very cognitive. I think you will have good future.:)
