Cougars: March 2009

Maybe Virginia enticed Bennett with money

4:09 PM Tue, Mar 31, 2009 |

Viriginia released Tony Bennett's financial package. The former Cougars coach will receive $1.7 million per year for 5 seasons. Plus, he gets a $500,000 signing bonus and $500,000 if he stays five seasons. So he'll get $2.2 million in his first year, including the bonus. He was making a million at WSU. Anyways, Virginia's official news release is after the jump.

Cougars contact Bone

7:17 PM Mon, Mar 30, 2009 |

The Oregonian is reporting that the Cougars have asked permission from Portland State to talk to men's basketball coach Ken Bone about their recent opening. Bone seems like a logical choice. He knows the landscape of the Northwest. He's from Seattle. Plus, he already has head coaching experience. And he loves the Northwest. Here's a quote from Bone just weeks ago.

"I really want to coach basketball in the Northwest where we can be successful. When you start looking around, there are a lot of schools like that in the Northwest, but I don't foresee those coaches going anywhere real soon." --- from the Oregonian's website 3/30/09

I guess things have changed now that Tony Bennett has accepted a job with Virginia. The Oregonian is also speculating that SDSU's Bill Grier, St. Mary's Randy Bennett, and former UCLA coach Steve Lavin could be candidates for the job.

Who should the Cougs hire?

6:30 PM Mon, Mar 30, 2009 |

The body barely cold, but I guess there's no time like the present to think of who'll be the next coach. Who should replace Tony Bennett? Here are a few contenders:

Ken Bone - Portland State head coach - All he does is win. He's 77-49 at PSU. For the past two seasons he's been 23-10 and taken his team to the NCAA tournament. In 13 seasons at Seattle Pacific, he went 251-97 with 8 trips to the NCAA D2 tourney. Again, he's a winner and from the Northwest. He's 50 and born in Seattle.

Cameron Dollar - Huskies assistant coach - They took a chance on Tony Bennett, why not on Dollar? He has no head coaching experience, but you get him a veteran coach on his bench and he may not need any. He's a great assistant. Former Husky Brandon Roy speaks highly of him. Here's an ESPN the Magazine article on how he's a great motivator. Plus, he won a title as a player at UCLA. Dollar knows the PAC-10 and the Northwest (he's been an assistant for Romar since 2002.

Randy Bennett - St. Mary's head coach - He's familiar with Tony's recruits from the Australia/New Zealand area. He's got Patty Mills on his current team. Bennett has spent the past 7 seasons at St. Mary's with a 127-90 record. He took them to 2 NCAA Tournaments.

Ray Giacoletti - Gonzaga assistant - He's been a head coach at Utah, Eastern and North Dakota State. Although his record at all three stops were average to good. Nothing overwhelming.

Vince Taylor - Minnesota assistant - He's spent the past 12 plus seasons as an assistant coach. He's currently with the Gophers. Taylor helped bring in a top-10 class this upcoming season. He was also an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwovles. He's featured in the same article as Cameron Dollar on ESPN the Magazine. Taylor's info is the 4th story down.

Mark Montgomery - Michigan State associate head coach - He's been with the Spartans for 8 seasons. Tom Izzo has a decent coaching tree. Montgomery is young and would be a nice fit for Wazzu. He grew up in Michigan, so there wouldn't be any ties to stay on the west coast.

Any thoughts? I think Bone and Dollar really jump out because of their proximity.

WSU's take on Bennett leaving

3:59 PM Mon, Mar 30, 2009 |

The Cougars sent out a news release on Tony Bennett's departure to Virginia. Here's Athletic Director Jim Sterk's response:

"Dick and Tony Bennett have elevated the men's basketball program at Washington State to an unprecedented level of success. We will begin a national search for a coach immediately with the goal of finding someone with the integrity, experience, and values that Dick and Tony brought to the program."

According to the release, Virginia asked Sterk for permission to talk to Bennett last Friday. Today, Bennett told Sterk, then the players about his decision to leave. The whole news release is after the jump.

WSU's Bennett to Virginia - CONFIRMED

2:52 PM Mon, Mar 30, 2009 |

Our NBC affiliate in Spokane, KHQ, has confirmed that Tony Bennett is taking the Virginia job. They spoke with a source close to Bennett.

To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about this. Coach Tony, as he's called by his players, is a great guy. He's been very friendly and helpful to the media. He usually gets quality players who happen to be quality people as well. He's helped start/continue a winning program with his dad, Dick.

On the other side, the Cougs gave him his start. He's only 39. Why not try to build on his recruiting class and current team to build more of a tradition? Why not spend more time with the school that gave you your first coaching job, and at the PAC-10 level nonetheless and not a small school, and work on establishing yourself. Again, he's only 39. It's not like he's 49 and with limited time to find something else. And as a Coug (from the Ryan Leaf years), I really hoped and wanted him to stay.

Sound off on your thoughts. Be easy Huskies, don't kick a dead dog (or coug in this case). Is this a good move for coach Tony? And what does this mean for Wazzu?

Cougars coach Bennett going to Virginia?

2:36 PM Mon, Mar 30, 2009 |

Say it isn't so Tony? Rumors and reports say Cougars coach Tony Bennett is going to Virginia. The Daily Progress out of Charlottesville, Virginia write they have a confirmed sources at U of Va that Bennett will be the Cavaliers next head coach. For what it's worth, all of this is news to WSU. Our NBC affiliate in Spokane called them in Pullman and they didn't know about it yet. Seattle Times UW beat writer Bob Condotta is already speculating that Portland State coach Ken Bone could be an early candidate.

Wow, that is a shocker considering all the schools Bennett has turned down in the past. Virginia is no where near traditionally hoops rich school like Indiana or LSU. They haven't been relevant since Ralph Sampson played there in the early 80's. If this is true, Tony will have his hands full against Duke, UNC, Wake Forest, and the rest of the ACC.

Cougars really really really smart

4:49 PM Tue, Mar 24, 2009 |

Maybe I should have used 4 really's. The PAC-10 rattled off it's All-Academic team today. Four Cougars made the 1st team. Of course, the All-Academic team is smarter than the All-PAC-10 team. The AA team has five players. The AP team has 10. Here's the list:

MEN'S BASKETBALL

First Team

Name, School, Year, GPA, Major

Aron Baynes, WSU, Sr., 3.24, Movement Studies

Derek Glasser, ASU, Jr., 3.14, Communication

Daven Harmeling, WSU, RS-Sr., 3.54, Heath and Fitness

Nikola Koprivica, WSU, Jr., 3.39, International Business

Taylor Rochestie, WSU, RS-Sr., 3.37, Communication

Second Team
Name, School, Year, GPA, Major

Nikola Knezevic, CAL, Jr., 3.03, Interdisciplinary Studies

Rihards, Kuksiks, ASU, So., 3.07, Business Communication

Roeland Schaftenaar, OSU, Jr., 3.17, Pre-Business

Drew Shiller, STAN, Jr., 3.08, Communication

Jordan Wilkes, CAL, Sr., 3.13, Social Welfare

BTW, as you can see, no Husky made the list.

An hour of my Life I'll never get back

8:22 PM Wed, Mar 18, 2009 |

I'm actually all for the extra post-season basketball tournaments such as the NIT, CBI, and CIT. That is until about an hour ago.
Just a night after watching the Cougars struggle at St. Mary's... I watched Oregon State in the first half of their game at Gill Coliseum against Houston in the College Basketball Invitational.

Cougs make 2009 Cougar Hardwood Classic Official

6:27 PM Wed, Mar 18, 2009 |

Wazzu sent out a news release today to confirm the men's basketball team's opponant in the 2009 Cougars Hardwood Classic. The Cougs will face the LSU Tigers. Former Stanford coach Trent Johnson led the Tigers to an SEC championship in his first year there. This game should be a good one. Ticket information won't be made until this summer. The official news release is after the jump.

President Obama's NCAA Bracket

4:21 PM Wed, Mar 18, 2009 |

President Obama filled out his bracket, and he doesn't have much love for the Pac-10, even though is brother coaches at Oregon State.

Here's the link to Obama's bracket.

President Obama has UW winning in the first round, then losing to Purdue. He has every other Pac-10 team losing in the first round. President Obama likes the Zags to make the Sweet 16, then lose to North Carolina.

What do you think about his picks? How would he do in your bracket challenge?

President Obama on Huskies NCAA hopes

11:13 AM Wed, Mar 18, 2009 |

I just watched President Barack Obama make his NCAA picks on ESPN. He had the Huskies losing in the round of 32 to Purdue. Obama moved Gonzaga to the Sweet 16, but picked North Carolina over the Zags in the Sweet 16. The President declared it an off-year for the PAC-10. Do you agree? How far do you have the Huskies and Zags going in your bracket?

Heller Leaves Hawks, Weaver Next?

11:29 PM Mon, Mar 16, 2009 |

The Seahawks and Lions have essentially traded tight ends over the past few weeks. Free agent tight end Will Heller signed a one-year deal with the Lions. Just last week, the Hawks inked Lions free agent TE John Owens to a deal.

Also, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Leonard Weaver's decision could come soon. It sounds like he's deciding between the Hawks and the Bucs. The Eagles appear to be out of the running. Maybe the Julian Peterson trade helped free up some cap space to give Weaver some extra dough.

Former Cougar Brandon Gibson skipped out on his Pro Day March 11th in Pullman. He's going to work out for the Pro Scouts March 28th at Chief Sealth. Strangely enough, QB Gary Rogers had a great Pro Day stat wise.

Gary Rogers (6-6 3/8, 224 pounds), who ran 4.74 and 4.78 seconds in the 40-yard dash and posted a 35-inch vertical, a 9-foot, 2-inch broad jump, a 4.23-second short shuttle and a 6.99-second three-cone drill.

Pretty good numbers. The only thing is, being a good athlete doesn't neccessarily translate into being a good pro football player. Ask the Eagles about Mike Mamula.

Huskies, Zags and Cougs get post-season bids

6:30 PM Sun, Mar 15, 2009 |

The Washington Huskies are back in the Big Dance! UW is headed to Portland as a #4 seed in the West Region. On Thursday 3/19, UW will take on 13 seed Mississippi State, a team that's hot right now after winning the SEC tourney. The winner of this moves on to play the winner of #5 Purdue and #12 Northern Iowa. I think the Huskies will win, but this is a tough draw against a hot team.

Gonzaga is also going to Portland as a #4 seed in the South. The Zags play #13 Akron on Thursday 3/19. Akron won the MAC conference, but the Zags got a much easier draw than the Huskies. Gonzaga should win its first round game for the first time since Adam Morrison was on the team 3 years ago. If Gonzaga wins, they'll get the winner of #5 Purdue and #12 Northern Iowa.

The Cougars didn't get an invite to the NCAA tourney, but Wazzu is headed to the NIT. The Cougars will play Tuesday at 8om at St. Mary's. Wazzu is a 7 seed, and St, Mary's is a 2 seed. The winner gets the winner of Davidson and South Carolina.

So, did UW get hosed? Did the Zags get lucky? Can WSU win on the road at St. Mary's?

Ducks lose their football coach

4:41 PM Fri, Mar 13, 2009 |

Mike Bellotti is calling it quits...at least on the football field. The former Oregon Ducks head football coach is moving up into the Athletic Director position July 1st. Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly takes over for Bellotti. Kelly was named "head coach in waiting" last December. So the move comes as no surprise, except for Bellotti stepping down so soon.

3:04 PM Thu, Mar 12, 2009 |

6:58 PM Wed, Mar 11, 2009 |

Cougars point guard Taylor Rochestie wins the PAC-10 Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. He averaged 13.6 points per game, 4.7 assists per game and scored 3.37 grade points average in the classroom. He's the second straight Coug to win the award. Robbie Cowgill won it last season. Cougar & Husky women PAC-10 honors

6:54 PM Wed, Mar 11, 2009 |

Cougars women hoops earned a few accolades today. Freshman Jazmine Perkins makes the PAC-10 All Freshman team. She's also honorable mention All PAC-10. April Cook joins Perkins on the honorable mention list for All PAC-10. Cook is also honorable mention for the All Freshman team.

The Huskies Kristi Kingman earns honorable mention on the Freshman team. Sami Whitcomb is honorable mention for the All PAC-10 and All Defensive team. Here's a link to the PAC-10 site with all the rest of the winners.

Huskies snag 3 awards & baffling PAC-10 list

3:55 PM Mon, Mar 09, 2009 |

The PAC-10 handed out its awards today. Three Huskies take three of the top 5 awards. Isaiah Thomas wins the "Freshman of the Year" award. Justin Dentmon wins "Most Improved Player of the Year". Head coach Lorenzo Romar earns the "Coach of the Year" honors. Dentmon and Jon Brockman made the 1st Team All PAC-10 list. Thomas made the second team and the All PAC-10 Freshman team. Venoy Overton was voted honorable mention for the All-Defensive team.

As for the Cougars, Taylor Rochestie was the lone representative on the 1st team All PAC-10. Klay Thompson and DeAngelo Casto made the Freshman Team.

You can see who else made the list right here. A final note, there are 10 players on the 1st Team All-PAC-10. I find that weird. Usually only five make the list in a 1st team because that's how many guys can play at once. It's like giving everyone kid a ribbon for participating, except these are college students. Ridiculous! Let me know if this sounds strange to you. Do you think 10 players should make the 1st team?

Interesting sports radio battle brewing?

8:08 PM Wed, Mar 04, 2009 |

As you can see two blogs below, former Husky and former Fone Zone host Brock Huard has a new gig with 710 ESPN Seattle. It's the new sports radio station starting April 1st. So what does that mean for the competition, 950 KJR Sports Radio? Do you listen to Softy/Ian Furness or Brock Huard? Do you tune in for Groz with Gas or Kevin Calabro? I'm sure there's room enough for 2 stations, but it has the potential to provide some good competition. Who do you listen to?

Cougs put 7 into WSU Hall of Fame

5:32 PM Mon, Mar 02, 2009 |

Wazzu will induct seven people into their Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. Olympic athlete Bernard Lagat, former football coach Jim Walden, and former NBA star Craig Ehlo are probably the most recognizable names. You can see the list and description of the WSU career after the jump.
