| Wazzu's women's basketball team adds two more recruits for 2009-10. Head coach June Daugherty signed 6'4" Australian Razz Muir and 5'10" German Ireti Amojo. You might remember Amojo from two years ago when she played with Auburn-Riverside in 2006-07 as a foreign exchange student. Amojo will join former teammate Katie Grad at WSU. I don't know much about Muir. According to her bio, she's won titles on numerous levels. Plus she was named a defensive player of the year and a female sports person of the year. Coach Daugherty will have added 11 new players in two years when this class enters school next year. Expect them to be a top 25 team within a few seasons. The whole press release and more on Amojo & Muir is after the jump. ...The Cougars just annouced they've signed four players to letters of intent for the 2009-'10 season. Here are their names: 6'5" guard Anthony Brown from Spokane's Shadle Park, 6'8" forward David Chadwick from Charlotte, 6'9" forward Brock Motum from Australia and 6'3" point guard Xavier Thames from Elk Grove, California. Rivals.com has Thames as the 16th best point guard in 2009. You can read more about the players after the jump. ...Tickets for the Cougars men's basketball progam will go on sale soon. You can buy single game tickets October 25th at 10am. The pre-sale begins October 20th. You can check out all the details on the press release after the jump. ...The Cougars starting quarterback Marshall Lobbestael will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL & MCL. At first they thought it was only an MCL tear, but further tests revealed the ACL tear. Typically, that type of surgery requires nine months of rehab. Lobbestael is the third WSU starting quarterback to go down to injury. Gary Rogers has a cervical spine fracture. He's done for the season Kevin Lopina broke a bone in his back. But Lopina could be back this week. Is the state of Washington cursed for sports? Between the Huskies, Cougars, Seahawks, Mariners, Sonics (gone), and Storm (LJ injury), there's been enough bad luck to make the Cubs look like lucky leprechauns. ...Wazzu held a quarterback tryout on Monday. Head coach Paul Wulff had 29 current students attempt to make the team. With all the injuries at the position, Wulff needed a scout team QB. He whittled it down to four on Monday night. Today, Wulff picked one. It's former Woodinville high school QB Peter Roberts. The Cougars sent out a press release. It's below:
PULLMAN, Wash. - Following a tryout Monday afternoon at Rogers Field, Washington State University Head Coach Paul Wulff announced Tuesday that freshman quarterback Peter Roberts has been added to the Cougar football team.
Can you believe it? There's an actual movie about former Cougars QB Ryan Leaf. Deadspin.com had an article about it. If you want to see the NFL Network's interview with the director/writer/actor of the movie, click here. The official title of the movie is call "Leaf: The Movie". Here's the film's myspace page. It was released this year. Apparently, the director wants to air it in Seattle at some point and time, but there are no plans as of yet. I can't believe it's a very positive flick. It sounds like he's focusing on Leaf's years in San Diego. By the way, the docudrama won an Accolade Award-honorable mention.
Below is a press release from the Cougars. Not bad for a 3rd string freshman. I wonder if he's going to be the starter from here on out. It might be a good idea to have a young guy, who'll be around for awhile, to get all those game-time reps.
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University quarterback Marshall Lobbestael was named U.S. Bank Pacific-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced. Lobbestael, a redshirt freshman from Oak Harbor, Wash., had thrown only two passes all year before coming off the bench to lead Washington State to a 48-9 win against Portland State.
Entering the game after injuries to the Cougars first two quarterbacks, Lobbestael's first two pass attempts went for touchdowns covering 14 and 53 yards. He ended up completing 9 of 12 passes (.750) for 149 yards and the two touchdowns with no interceptions.
The Cougars scored on the first four possessions after he entered the game. Washington State's offense piled up a school-record-tying 36 first downs and 638 yards total offense (277 rushing, 361 passing). ...In case you hadn't heard, the Cougars and Baylor game is moving from Saturday morning to Friday at 5:30pm. Blame Hurricane Ike for the change. It's suppose to hit this weekend. So Baylor and the Cougs changed the game time. I guess it's better than playing at 9:30am on Saturday. What Cougar in their right mind would be up so early. The official release is after the jump. Just a heads up, on the release they use central time for game time. By the way, it sounds like they're gonna try to get it on TV...but that's up in the air at this time.
The modified telecast will air live nationally on Fox College Sports and locally on FSN Southwest. Due to a conflict with the Mariners-Angels game at 7pm, FSN Northwest will deliver the game on delay at 11:00p.m. So unless you subscribe to FSN Southwest or Fox College Sports, you better go hit a sports bar to watch the game. Or you'll have to watch the tape delay at 11pm. ...The Cougars just sent out a press release saying Apple Cup tickets will go on sale this Saturday at 10 am. It's out in Pullman. It should be a fun ticket, even if both teams are struggling. Check out the official press release after the jump. It sounds like, if you're going to buy tickets through the school, you better buy 'em this weekend. Or you'll have to pay an additional "donation" for the same said tickets. ...Just got an e-mail from Wazzu. There will be a couple of players signing autographs Saturday at Qwest Field before the Oklahoma State game. They'll be at the Exhibition Center in the morning. The official release is after the jump. ...As the new Bruins head football coach, Slick Rick is getting nearer and nearer to walking back on the field at Husky Stadium. November 15th, to be exact. The once heralded coach is now the main guy for his alma mater, UCLA. ESPN.com even has an article about the 47-year-old Neuheisel's return to the Pac-10 on their main page. It's worth a read. In the column, Rick prescribes to be a changed man. Here's part of what he has to say: "I will be better now because of those experiences, and for that reason, I can say that it was worth it, now that I have this opportunity. ... And there is regret, but I don't focus on the regret. I focus on taking the positive from it and moving forward and hopefully not making those mistakes again."His troubles, Rick says -- NCAA probations, violations in Colorado, gambling on March Madness, an Uber amount of arrested Husky players -- are all behind him. After leaving the Huskies, Neuheisel coached high school before moving on to be an quarterbacks coach for the Ravens in the NFL. Now he's poised to make his return. But does anyone believe Slick Rick's old ways are simply part of the past? And does he have the stuff to set UCLA in the right direction? ...Darn that Clay Bennett. First he takes the team formerly known as the Sonics to OKC, but then he trades for former Cougar Kyle Weaver after he's moved the team. The Okies sent Charlotte a 2009 second round draft pick for Weaver. It would have been nice to see Weaver in a Sonics jersey at least once. Who knows, maybe that'll come true someday when Seattle gets the NBA again. ...Cougar football single game tickets go on sale tomorrow morning. You read the official press release after the jump. It has the list of the games and the costs. Depending on the matchup, the cost of the ticket can vary. ...The media PAC-10 football poll is out. Now I don't remember voting, but they've got the Huskies predicted to finish 8th, the Cougars in last place. The Cougars sent out a press release...it's after the jump. Do you think it's fair? Are the Huskies the 8th best team in the conference? Are the Cougars going to be the worst team in the PAC-10? ...For those who don't have the Golf Channel or don't watch it much, a former Cougar golfer has won the The Golf Channel's reality show "Big Break: Ka'anapali". Apparently, the final was last night. Here's the winning video. Welch wins a bunch of prizes. Her prizes include an exemption into the Sept. 25-28 Navistar LPGA Classic, her entry fees into 2009 Futures Tour events waived, a BMW Z4 Coupe and an Adams Golf endorsement contract that includes $10,000 in cash. - sacbee.comWSU put out a press release about Welch's win. It's after the jump.... Good news for Cougars guard Kyle Weaver. The Charlotte Bobcats picked him #38 overall. Coach Larry Brown will like the do-it-all guard. Here's DX's take on Weaver. I talked to a fellow Cougar. He's a little upset Seattle didn't pick him. Now, he'll have to do the man-crush via the long distance. Sorry Tait...there's always NBA Season Pass on cable. ...Despite what ESPN "declares" to be the truth during every NFL Draft since 1998, Cougars legendary quarterback Ryan Leaf is not the worst QB or the biggest bust ever in the draft. That claim belongs to Joey Harrington (according the Detriot Free Press via Pro Football Reference). It's science...look it up. I love science. Former Seahawk QB Rick Mirer(er) is #2. Followed by Carolina Panthers QB casualty David Carr. Then it's my boy Ryan Leaf. Sure you may say I'm a little bias because I went to Wazzu with good old #16, but give me the name of one of Leaf's top 3 receivers during his rookie season (without looking it up), then you earn the right to criticize him. Good luck, because 99% of fans can't...the other 1% are true blue Charger fans who are traumatized by the Ryan Leaf years (the bad ones from the NFL...the good years came during his final 2 seasons in Pullman). ...Troubled Lakes quarterback Calvin Schmidtke has landed a scholarship to play with Indiana State University. Former Huskies RB coach Trent Miles is ISU's head caoch. He gave him the offer. Schmidtke's free ride with the Cougars was pulled when he ran into trouble the with law. Here's ISU's article on Schmidtke. ...The Cougars just sent over a press release concerning Lakes QB and Wazzu recruit Calvin Schmidtke. The school will release Schmidtke from his scholarship after recent events have been uncovered. Schmidtke is due in court Wednesday to face multiple charges including DUI, possession of marijuana, and minor in possession of alcohol. Here's a quote on Schmidtke by Cougars head coach Paul Wulff: "We feel this is in the best interest of both Washington State University and Calvin. We wish him well with his future endeavors." - Cougars coach Paul Wulff
Former Lakes high school quarterback and future Cougars QB Calvin Schmidtke is going to court tomorrow (Wednesday). KING 5 has learned that Schmidtke faces charges of DUI and reckless driving, minor in possession of alcohol, misdemeanor marijuana possession, public disturbance, and failure to wear a seatbelt. The charges come from two separate incidents. A spokesman for the Cougars says the team is aware of the situation. But the school doesn't have a statement at this moment. I'm sure we'll hear from WSU later tonight. We'll update the blog when it happens. By the way, Schmidtke was the Tacoma News-Tribune's All-Area Player of the Year, the Times 1st team All-State. He completed 76 percent of his passer during his senior year. If Schmidtke gets a second chance at WSU (assuming that new head coach Paul Wulff considers this a 1st strike), he would probably excel in Wulff's pass happy offense.
