| October 2009Seahawks head coach Jim Mora is still doing the same old song and dance when it comes to Walter Jones and in his future this season. He says he's coming along, but he thinks his return is "iffy". Big Walt is taking up a valuable roster spot. The Hawks will have to make a decision soon. Should they keep Jones on the roster or should they put him on the IR and sign another tackle? And of course, do you think Big Walt is done? Should the future Hall-of-Famer call it a career? ...The Mariners just sent over a news release about Ken Griffey Junior's knee surgery. It's below.
Seattle Sounders FC are officially the Number Three seed in the west and they will face the second seeded Houston Dynamo in the first round. Sounders FC hosts the first match of the home-and-home, aggregate goal series Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Qwest Field, with the second match scheduled for Nov. 8 at Robertson Stadium in Houston. The two-game series is a 180-minute game with the winner being the side that scores the most goals overall. The team that does so advances to the conference championship, with the winner of that single match going to the MLS Cup final in Seattle on Nov. 22. ...Brad Evans scored the game winning goal in the 84th minute as the Seattle Sounders FC capped the regular season with a 2-1 comeback win over FC Dallas on Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field on Saturday night. The victory assured Seattle of at least third place in the MLS Western Conference. The loss snapped a four-game win streak and eliminated Dallas from playoff contention. It was the first win at home since July and earned Sounders FC 47 points. The LA Galaxy clinched the West by beating San Jose, 2-0. The outcome of Sunday's game between Houston and Chivas USA will determine the final seeding in the West semifinals. Sigi Schmid earned his 125th career win, lifting him to the MLS career lead over Bob Bradley. ...The Seattle Seahawks have signed guard Mike Gibson to the active roster and tackle Kyle Williams to the practice squad, the team announced this afternoon. Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu might still yet return this season. Head Coach Jim Mora said today tests show Lofa has a partial tear of the pectoral muscle, not a complete one. After a tough loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Seahawks Head Coach Jim Mora delivered a tough blow to the media after the game saying Lofa Tatupu is done for the season. Lofa suffered a torn pectoral muscle while tackling Arizona receiver Larry Fitzgerald in the second quarter. He went to the locker room before halftime and watched the second half in street clothes. Tatupu is a three-time Pro Bowler and will have to undergo surgery to repair the injury. He will be replaced by David Hawthorne at middle linebacker. Coach Mora is optimistic linebacker Leroy Hill will be back after the bye week. Seahawks don't muster any offense, and lose Patrick Kerney on defense. He leaves the game after reinjuring his groin. Not much action in the 2nd Quarter. It's highlighted by the Hawks fake punt. Jon Ryan to John Carlson for 42 yards. The drive ends in 28-yd Olindo Mare FG. Lofa Tatupu leaves the game with a shoulder injury. His return is questionable at this time. Watch the Jim Mora Show following NBC's Sunday Night Football. As always, we'll have a section where you can ask questions of Coach Mora in our "Ask Jim" segment. It has not been a good 1st quarter for Seattle. Arizona drives at will on the opening possession. 80 yards in 15 plays in 10:42. It culminates in a Kurt Warner to Larry Fitzgerald 2-yard TD pass. It's a cloudy day at Qwest Field, but 58 degrees on Pink Day at the stadium. Players, fans and coaches decked out in various degrees of pink to raise awareness for breast cancer. Here are today's inactives.
The Seattle Seahawks have placed tackle Brandon Frye on injured reserve and signed veteran tackle Damion McIntosh to the 53-man roster. The 10-year veteran McIntosh has played in 115 games with 111 starts playing for San Diego, Miami and Kansas City. He has tallied 93 starts at left tackle, 16 starts at right tackle and two starts at right guard during his career. McIntosh was originally San Diego's third round draft pick (83rd overall) in the 2000 NFL Draft out of Kansas State and has help block for the NFL's top running backs over the last decade in LaDainian Tomlinson, Ronnie Brown and Larry Johnson. Seattle Thunderbirds fans have a tasty way to fuel up before a game. For $55 per person, Salty's at Redondo Beach is offering a three course meal, a ride to and from ShoWare Center and one ticket to the following games: ...If you've always wanted to ask a pro athlete a question, but never could? During their Monday press conferences Huskies Head Coach Steve Sarkisian and Seahawks Head Coach Jim Mora both had good news regarding injuries. Nate Williams, D'Andre Goodwin and Johri Fogerson were all back to practice for the Huskies and on the Seahawks side of things Coach Mora says Patrick Kerney should play against Arizona and Leroy Hill could return to practice this week, but is not expected to play on Sunday. It was a weekend many sports fans in the NorthWest will not forget, thanks in large part to the two quarterbacks leading their teams. On Saturday night, Jake Locker of the Huskies, dazzled us all, with a 56-yard run, where he went from sure sack to a touchdown to remember. In the 4th quarter, a win for the Huskies seemed out-of-reach, but Locker remained calm and cool. Like the leader he is, he never gave up on his team and on a crucial 3rd down and 10 with under 3 minutes to play, Locker scrambled and found his tight-end Kavarion Middleton for a touchdown. A few plays later, thanks to a Mason Foster interception, the Huskies would shock the Arizona Wildcats with a comeback win for the ages. Less than 24 hours later, it was Matt Hasselbeck's turn to shine and did he ever. Seahawk fans should be in awe of Hasselbeck's heroic efforts. Just three weeks ago he suffered two broken ribs, on Monday he couldn't even throw a football, yet on Sunday against Jacksonville he passed for 241 yards and four touchdowns in Seattle's 41-0 victory over Jacksonville. "That was tremendous courage," coach Jim Mora said. I think we all need to take a step back and realize, we're watching a couple great quarterbacks right now and it's time to applaud them both for their leadership and courage that they'e showing us on the field. Sunny and 55 an hour before gametime. Matt Hasselbeck will start at QB for the Seahawks. Here are the inactives for today's game.
He's been a stalwart goaltender for the Everett Silvertips since they acquired him from the Kootenay Ice in December 2008. Spend time chatting with Thomas Heemskerk, though, and you'll notice that he's about as laid back in person as he is intense in net, and pretty mature for someone who doesn't turn 20 until April.
Never Give Up! That's the theme from Husky Stadium as the Dawgs comeback in the 4th quarter and knock-off Arizona 36-33. After the game Jake Locker says, "Its good to have one go our way for a change, we never gave up, our guys kept fighting, I'm so proud of these guys." Washington linebacker Mason Foster who intercepted a pass that bounced off the foot of Arizona's Delashaun Dean said, "I was trying to make a play for our defense, because I knew we were still in the game, I just took advantage of the oppurtunity and made it happen." Did he ever! Foster returned it 37 yards and gave his huskies an improbable 36-33 win, that Husky Nation will not forget! Everett Silvertips and Seattle Thunderbirds fans undergo a bittersweet experience every season. Each year, they have to say good-bye to the 20-year-old players who are "graduating" out of the WHL. Some have to say goodbye to players who move into the pro ranks earlier than age 20, leaving fans bursting with pride... and heartbroken at the same time. No, we won't see them on the ice at Comcast Arena or ShoWare Center anymore, but we have watched them develop. And at the best of times, we can continue to watch them develop in the AHL and hopefully cheer them as they realize their NHL dreams. ...I just returned from Seahawk Headquarters where quarterback Matt Hasselbeck practiced for the first time since suffering a fractured rib on Sept. 20 in San Francisco. I asked him how he felt during the practice and Hasselbeck said, "It was manageable today, I'm OK, not bad. I want to give everybody everything I've got, and hopefully I'll be out there. But at the same time, I want to be fair to Seneca, if for some reason I'm not able to go, then he needs to prepare to play. Today was a good start, we'll see how tomorrow goes." So while Hasselbeck remains day-to-day, Walter Jones is out. Coach Jim Mora said Big Walt will not practice this week, and is not expected to until after Seattle's bye on Oct. 25. ...Seattle Mariners Ace Felix Hernandez was named the American League pitcher of the month for September today. Hernandez went 6-0 with a 1.52 ERA in 7 starts in September & October. King Felix won his final 5 starts, posting a 1.88 ERA during that stretch. The monthly award was the 2nd of his career, also winning the hardware in June to become the first player in club history to earn two such honors during the same season. Overall, the 23-year-old right-hander finished the season 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA in 34 starts. ...As the WHL season heats up, we're getting a better look at the two teams on the other side of the Cascades that give the Everett Silvertips and Seattle Thunderbirds such fierce competition (when the two aren't busy battling each other!). We're lucky this season to have two talented bloggers offering their insight into the workings of the Tri City Americans and Spokane Chiefs. You met both "Dave Schultz" and "Rhaen" in recent weeks. Here, Rhaen brings us up to date on how the Chiefs have been faring since the season began. ...I just returned from Seahawk headquarters, where Coach Jim Mora gave his Monday post-game press conference. He had good and bad news on the injury front. Calvin Pickard is a STUD.
When the Tampa Bay Lightning and Phoenix Coyotes squared off in a pre-season game at Comcast Arena in Everett a couple of weeks ago, talk heated up about the possibility of bringing an NHL team to the Seattle area. ...- Still Colts ball. Hawks finally get tough on D. Brandon Mebane finally puts Manning on his back, but he still almost completes a pass to Wayne. Rookie Aaron Curry makes a nice open field tackle on Addai. Colts punt. It's a touchback.
- Colts ball. The Colts methodically go down, 12 plays, 80 yards for a touchdown. Joseph Addai finishes it off with an 11 yard TD run. The broadcast showed the Hawks offensive guys Houshmandzadeh and Obomanu looking bummed. Colts lead it, 28-3.
- Hawks ball. Edgerrin James is in the game. He carries the ball and the Colts fan do the classy thing and clap for him. That was his 3,000 career rushing attempt. Seattle's drive is stopped by 2 penalties. The first one was a holding after Seneca and John Carlson hook up on a big pass. The second one, Seneca crossed the line of scrimmage and threw a great ball to T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Seahawks punt.
The Seahawks get the ball first. Seattle seems to be committed to the run early. They gain six yards on four carries. Not too good. The best play comes from Deion Branch. He catches a ball and gains 14 yards. Hawks stall and punt.
It's just a few minutes before kickoff, and it's a little odd here in Indy. All of the visiting photograpers are made to wear orange hunting vests, while the home media gets the normal black vests. One day before the Seattle Seahawks showdown with the Colts the hawks make one roster move. The Hawks have released fullback Justin Griffith and signed tackle Kyle Williams from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster. ...Word out of Eugene today is that Oregon Ducks Head Coach Chip Kelly will reinstate Running Back LeGarrette Blount, after initially suspending him for the season after landing a punch on an opposing player following the loss at Boise State last month. ...Opening night in hockey is almost always about emotion. The Canucks didn't have enough, early enough, against the Flames. ... |
