« Coach Mora not Ruling Hasselbeck out, yet! |Main| Hasselbeck, Big Walt and Lofa Not Looking Good For Sunday? »
As the Mariner season winds down, the speculation about Ken Griffey Junior's future in both Seattle, and Major League Baseball, starts up again. He's been called plenty of names by plenty of fans over the years. The term Hall of Famer hasn't been used enough.
How about we call him Mariner Legend and Hall of Famer. During his press conference back in the spring, Griffey admitted he might not play 100 games (which he has) and that he might not hit 30 HR's, or 20, or even equal last year's disappointing total of 18. Even with numbers that aren't Griffey-like from the 90's, he's helped the clubhouse and entire organization. He's also helped them win a few games, which means a lot when you consider they'll actually have a winning season just a year after the catastrophe known as the 2008 Mariners. With his bonuses, Griffey's salary will be about 3.5 Million this season. A BARGAIN. Especially when you look at the numbers of Kenji Johjima (8 HR's 21 RBI) and Adrian Beltre (7 HR's 41 RBI) this year. Their salaries are 13.4 Million and 7.6 Million respectively. Granted Griffey's batting average 70 points below his career average, but would you rather have him or not? Having Griffey back in Seattle this season has reminded us of the old Glory Days of the Mariners. Not because of his numbers, but because the team wins. |
