NBA discouraging handshakes?

6:02 PM Wed, Sep 30, 2009 |

According to the Boston Herald, the NBA has handed down an anti-handshake directive to help prevent the possibility of an H1N1 flu outbreak.

Players and coaches have been asked to greet each other via more sanitary means of contact, like fist pounding, or maybe chest bumps.

Should we all do the fist bump or chest bump at work when greeting a guest or co-worker? Is this getting a little out of hand? No pun intended.

It's getting very out of hand. I saw a news article recently which claimed that only about 30% of influenza A cases are caused by getting the virus on your hand. Why? Because the flu actually survives very poorly on your skin. Instead, you are most likely to get the flu from airborne particles. With that in mind, do you think it will be a major problem to have players show a little sportsmanship? The more likely problem, as I see it, is having players in the same locker room, where they can easily be exposed to airborne particles emitted by another player who happens to be contagious. And an even bigger problem is having thousands of people sitting in the same stands. I'm not saying that we should give every player his own locker room, or that fans should be required to watch the games on TV, I just want to keep it in perspective.
