Surprise! M's acquire Bill Hall

3:34 PM Wed, Aug 19, 2009 |

Is there any surprise that the M's traded for Bill Hall today? The ex-Brewer was designated for assignment a few days ago. Of course M's GM Jack Zduriencik knew of Hall. It's Jack's old team. I'm wondering if this is bad news for the future of Adrian Beltre. AB is headed for free agency. Could Hall be a cheap replacement for Beltre? Or should the M's still sign the gold glove Beltre this off-season? This definitely makes it interesting. The M's official news release is after the jump.

MARINERS ACQUIRE INF/OF BILL HALL FROM MILWAUKEE BREWERS
Seattle sends minor league RHP Ruben Flores to Brewers.

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced that the club has acquired veteran INF/OF Bill Hall and cash considerations from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor league RHP Ruben Flores.

"We value Bill as a versatile player who can play the outfield and three infield positions," said Zduriencik. "Billy has been a starting shortstop, third baseman and center fielder in his career. He has been a very solid Major League player who brings you experience and versatility. We look forward to Billy's contributions as he starts a new page in his career."

Hall, 29, was batting .201 (43x214) with 12 doubles, 6 home runs and 24 RBI in 76 games for the Brewers this season. He was designated for assignment on Aug. 12.

In 8 Major League seasons, Hall is a career .253 (677x2676) hitter with 177 doubles, 17 triples, 102 home runs and 367 RBI. He has made starts at six different positions during his career: SS - 244, 3B - 214, CF - 119, 2B - 89, RF - 4, LF - 1.

Hall had his best season in 2006 when he batted .270 with 101 runs, 39 doubles, 4 triples, 35 home runs and 85 RBI. His 78 extra base hits tied for 8th-most in the National League and 35 home runs were 10th-most.

Flores, 25, was 3-2 with 18 saves and a 4.39 ERA in 44 relief appearances combined between Clinton (Midwest League) and High Desert (California League). He limited opponents to a .225 (45x200) average, while walking 35 and striking out 61 in 53.1 innings. Flores recorded 18 of his 21 save opportunities with Clinton before being promoted to High Desert on July 22. Flores missed all the of the 2008 season after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He was originally selected by the Mariners in the 12th round of the 2003 June Draft.
