Seattle Mayor feeling effect of Sonics-gate?

11:03 PM Wed, Aug 19, 2009 |

I know the final tally isn't in, but Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels may not make it out of the primary. So far, the two-term incumbant is only receiving 25.2% of the vote. He's 1.3% behind the candidate in second place.

Did the exit of the Sonics hurt Nickels campaign? Obviously, there's no scientific data to support this idea, but, right now, nearly 75% didn't vote for Nickels. Let's say there are 2% of the Seattle voters who were staunched Sonics fans. If those fans were so hardcore, they decided to cast a ballot for anyone other than Nickels. Well that 2% would have put Nickels in first place. As it sits right now, Nickels will not have a chance to run for Mayor in the November 3rd election.

Sorry, I think the failure of the city to clear the streets from snow last winter would have a lot more to do with it.

The Sonics were a terrible team with no real hope of improving. They proved that in Oklahoma City.

I'd much rather have a real working man's Soccer team that a corporate NBA franchise with spoiled athletes who've lost all sense of joy at playing the game.

Go Sounders FC!

Sno Shmo...I think it is funny as heck.
The idiot savant did nothing while our beloved Sonics were wisked away by a Crook.
I think he got what he deserved.
All the politicians are guilty for letting this happen.
They should all be put in jail.
The Sounders do a lot less then the Sonics did for this city.

When he had a chance to stand up and save the Sonics, he turned yellow. People are too hurt to admit how badly they miss the Sonics. Nickels failure in this election shows that hurt is being expressed in the ballot box.

John G,

Soccer is pretty lame in my opinion! The Sonics have been here for 41 years and they were the one who gave us a championship! Nickels is getting what he deserve for what he did when he stabbed us in the back!

You mean the sport where owners purchase the rights of players for $130 million dollars, only to throw another $15 million a year at the player themselves? I don't know how being the richest sport in the world equates to a "real working man's soccer".

Professional sports are all corporate. I love the Sounders just as much as anybody, but its not any more "for the love of the game" than other sports.

If anything, soccer has negatively impacted the NBA, as more European players migrate into the league and bring along their cheesy soccer gamesmanship strategies. The term "flop" was never discussed in basketball until the early 2000s; now thanks to those European actors called soccer players - we have to deal with it in multiple sports.

"working man's soccer". I just puked a little in my mouth!

I think the snow response and his enthusiastic support of the bag tax had more to do with Nickels getting defeated.

I have never felt the same about Mayor Nickels since the Sonics were were deceitfully squandered away. Adding to that, the snow garbage this winter and the tunnel project and yeah it cost him dearly

We aren't talking EPL, La Liga, or Serie A. We are talking MLS vs NBA. One NBA player makes the salary of the entire roster of any MLS team. When a rookie has to do an internship at Wells Fargo to pay the bills you know something is wrong.
