Injury Update on Bedard and Beltre

4:05 PM Fri, Aug 14, 2009 |

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today the following medical updates on LHP Erik Bedard and 3B Adrian Beltre: Erik Bedard underwent successful surgery today performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. The surgery revealed an inflamed bursa and a torn labrum. Dr. Yocum debrided the bursa and repaired the labrum. He will be in a sling for 2-3 weeks and will be able to begin baseball-related activity in approximately 4-6 months.
Adrian Beltre was examined today by urologist Dr. Rahul Desai after being placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a severely contused right testicle. Beltre was injured in the 9th inning in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the White Sox (14 innings). The specialist recommended Beltre to not perform any strenuous activity for the next week. In approximately one week, he will be able to begin slow progress towards baseball-related activity. The Mariners have had 14 different players spend time on the disabled list this year, the most in the American League. Those players have combined to miss 675 games this season, but Seattle remains 5.5 games back in the Wild Card race.
