Yes, the Mariners must be collecting former closers or potential closers. Today, they announce they've signed Jeff Zimmerman. He closed for Texas back in 2001, his last season in the majors. He pitched two more season in minor league ball, but has been out of baseball since. "Jeff threw for us last week in Arizona and we were impressed. The ball came out of his hand nice and easy. Our doctors have checked him out and we've determined he's a guy worth taking a chance on." -- Jack Zduriencik - M's GM It's only a minor league deal, so Jack is right. It won't cost much to see if he'll pan out. At least the M's aren't wasting money on big name busts like Bill Bavasi use to do. You can read the M's official news release after the break.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today the Mariners have signed right-handed pitcher Jeff Zimmerman to a minor league contract. Zimmerman, 36, has not pitched in the Majors since 2001. "Jeff threw for us last week in Arizona and we were impressed" Zduriencik said. "The ball came out of his hand nice and easy. Our doctors have checked him out and we've determined he's a guy worth taking a chance on." Zimmerman originally signed with the Texas Rangers after pitching with Winnipeg in the Independent Northern League. He made his Major League debut in 1999, posting a 9-3 mark with 3 saves in 65 games. After pitching in middle relief in 2000 (4-5, with 1 save), he closed for the Rangers in 2001, converting 28 of 31 opportunities. He was placed on the disabled list to begin the 2002 season with an injured right elbow, and ended up having "Tommy John" surgery on the elbow later that year. He rehabilitated his injured elbow for two seasons before retiring after the 2003 season. Jeff's brother, Jordan, was the Mariners 32nd round draft pick in the 1994 June draft. He pitched in eight games in the Majors for Seattle during the 1999 season, including once against his brother. 1 Comments |
Last night's game showed just how badly we need a closer. The 9th inning was just pathetic!
