Condoleezza Rice next Pac-10 commish?

10:15 AM Fri, Jan 30, 2009 |

The Seattle Times is reporting that Condoleezza Rice is in the running to be the next Pac-10 commisioner. In fact two sources have confirmed that the former U.S. secretary of state's hat is in the pool to replace current commish Tom Hansen.

From the Times:

Rice was provost of Stanford from 1993 to 1999, during which time she was active in athletic affairs, including overseeing the hiring of Tyrone Willingham as football coach. She has long talked about her love of football and once said her dream job would be to become NFL commissioner. Hansen has been conference commissioner since 1983. A final selection for his replacement is set to be made by the Pac-10's presidents and chancellors sometime this spring or summer. It's unclear who other candidates for the position are.

Well, at the very least Condi will bring attention to the Pac 10. Hansen is retiring on July 1st.

NFL Franchise numbers released

5:45 PM Thu, Jan 29, 2009 |

ESPN's Mike Sando has the numbers for the NFL's 2009 Franchise & Transition tag amounts. The Seahawks have openly said they considering tagging Leroy Hill. The Franchise number for Hill would be $8,304,000 as a linebacker. Here's Sando's article. You can the numbers for every position in his piece.

The Franchise number for defensive tackles is $6,058,000. The Hawks need help on the d-line. Tennessee's Albert Haynesworth is a free agent. He made a deal where if he hit certain levels of achievement, then the Titans couldn't franchise him again. He made $7,250,003 in 2008, according to USA Today. As a free agent, Haynesworth would make more than the franchise number and his 2008 salary. Hypothetically, let's say the Titans were able to franchise him, again. Because his salary is higher than the Franchise tag, you would take his 2008 salary and multiple it by 1.2. So his number would be approximately $8,700,000 for 2009, again hypothetically. You gotta figure that's probably his agent's starting point for salary demands. Of course, it's still a big "if" that the Hawks would be interested in him and he in them. Plus, Haynesworth has had some problems in his past and you wonder if he's a fit in the (Tim) Ruskell model. Just food for thought.

Mariners sign Sweeney to minor league contract

12:32 PM Thu, Jan 29, 2009 |

The Mariners have agreed to a minor league contract with five-time All-Star Mike Sweeney. The singing includes an invite to Seattle's spring training. Rumors have it that the 35-year-old could become Seattle's designated hitter.

Sweeney has a .299 career average with 199 home runs and 849 RBIs. Last year he appeared in 42 games with Oakland. After having surgery on both knees in 2008, the Athletics released him Sept. 9th. Sweeney lives in Gig Harbor. He was the winner of the 2007 Hutch Award.

Video: Sexy PETA Super Bowl ad pulled by NBC

6:22 PM Wed, Jan 28, 2009 |

NBC is pulling a PETA Super Bowl commercial because, as NBC says, "It depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards." Shucks. No equipment malfunction this year?

The advertisment, "Studies Show Vegetarians Have Better Sex," shows women getting "intimate" with vegetables. For the sake of better football ads, I'll fall victim to PETA's ploy and embed the video below.

Former Husky NBA's tenth most popular jersey

1:28 PM Wed, Jan 28, 2009 |

The NBA released it's list of most popular jerseys sold. And a Husky makes the list at #10. You would guess Brandon Roy (sorry Spencer Hawes), but it's not. It's his former teammate Nate Robinson. Pretty cool, yet unbelievable considering Nate isn't even a starter with the Knicks. I guess it's just that aura about him. Plus, the fact he plays in New York. Here's the site where you can see the list. The top 10 list is based on sales from the beginning of the season through January 2009.

Aaron Heilman, we hardly knew ye

11:16 AM Wed, Jan 28, 2009 |

Mariners have traded pitcher Aaron Heilman to the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Garrett Olson and infielder Ronny Cedeno. Heilman was acquired from the Mets in the JJ Putz trade. It's probably better that Heilman was dealt. He wanted to be a starter. If you look at the M's roster right now, there 8 guys who have started for them in the past. Add Heilman and any other free agent and you're making an already difficult decision even more difficult. You can read the news release after the jump.

UPDATE: The M's release pitcher Randy Messenger. They had to cut someone after making the 2-for-1 trade with the Cubs. Now the M's 40-man roster is back at 40 men.

Marshall interviews for Raiders job

9:30 AM Wed, Jan 28, 2009 |

John Marshall, the Seahawks ex-defensive coordinator, will interview for the same gig at the Oakland Raiders. That's according to multiple Bay Area reports. Marshall was with the Seahawks since 2003, becoming the defensive coordinator in 2006. Before that, he was defensive coordinator with the Falcons, 49ers and Panthers.

Ex-Seahawks defensive line coach Dwaine Board has already been hired to do the same job with the Raiders. Both coaches were let go during Mora's restructuring of the coaching staff. Marshall's interview could happen today. The Raiders have yet to name a new head coach.

Ciao LA! David Beckham to stay with AC Milan?

9:35 AM Tue, Jan 27, 2009 |

The Sounders FC new Western Division rival, LA Galaxy, may be down one famous player -- David Beckham -- if AC Milan has its way. The Italian team is offering 4.5 million pounds for the star midfielder's contract. LA Galaxy has yet to accept the offer. Here's the deal, described by ESPN.com:

Beckham's five-year deal with the MLS club has a break clause inserted that means he can leave California for free in October. Milan aim to offer cash to tempt Galaxy to allow the 33-year-old to stay in Italy. Reports in England suggest that Milan, having held discussions with his American club believe that £4.5m will be enough to get that clause activated.

Beckham has been living in Milan on a recent loan to AC Milan. He scored his first goal over the weekend in a 4-1 victory over Bologna. Apparently wife Victoria (Posh) is less than happy about the idea, not wanting to move their three sons to another non-English speaking country.

Statements from Ruskell, Hill on Hill's arrest

5:32 PM Mon, Jan 26, 2009 |

I just got these two statements in an e-mail from the Seahawks concerning this weekend's arrest of LB Leroy Hill for possession of pot. I'll post below.

"I want to apologize to my family, my teammates, the Seahawks organization and fans. I am embarrassed by the incident Saturday morning and the poor judgment I showed. Please understand my actions were not consistent with the type of person I hope to become."-- Leroy Hill.

"Any time anybody in our family gets in trouble or gets arrested, it feels like a punch in the gut. We are a team always striving for good, consistent character, so it is disappointing when something like this happens. However, we will never stop trying to be better."-- Tim Ruskell

Update: Jim Moore at the PI put together a column with more details on the pot arrest, including an interview with the driver who called 911. It's worth a read. Moore believes the arrest shouldn't carry more than a one game suspension. Without a DUI charge, it's hard to argue against the idea. But his biggest question posed: "What the heck was Hill doing in a '75 Electra?"

Hawks done with K-Rob?

4:46 PM Mon, Jan 26, 2009 |

Profootballweekly.com reports a rumor that Koren Robinson is probably done with the Seahawks. It wouldn't surprise me. They qoute a source that K-Rob's knee may not let him even play much anymore. I just started having flashbacks of the last time he was with the Hawks. He dropped the ball quite a bit again.

The site also goes into speculation that T.J. Houshmandzadeh (championship) could sign with Seattle. Here's the article. I'm sure he would be a nice addition to the offense. Although I think the Hawks would be better off using that money to shore up the defensive line. Plus, Houshmandzadeh will be 32 next September.

Sounders release four, deal for Ianni

11:29 AM Mon, Jan 26, 2009 |

The Sounders FC have released four former USL Sounders. Defender Nik Besagno, forward Jason Cascio, forwards Andre Schmid and Craig Tomlinson have all been let go by the team. Also today, the Sounders made a deal for Patrick Ianni of the Houston Dynamo. Ianni was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

"Ianni gives us a young, experienced central defender with a big upside," said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid. "He's very strong in the air, which is something we need to add to our team right now."

From UCLA, Ianni played for Schmid on the U.S. U-20 National Team at the 2005 World Youth Championships. To get him, the team traded a 2010 SuperDraft conditional draft pick. You can find more about the Ianni at the Sounders website.

Seahawks: Ruskell's team of good character?

9:35 AM Mon, Jan 26, 2009 |

When I first heard the news of Leroy Hill's arrest, I wondered if the LB's career in Seattle was over. Usually the Seahawks wait until after charges are filed, or the case is tried, before making a statement. But Hill's arrest, coupled with the LB being the team's top FA and Ruskell's good-character-first mantra, leaves me wondering if letting Hill go isn't the good character statement that needs to be made.

Let's take a quick look at the good character guys with bad character problems on the roster: Sean Locklear and Rocky Bernard have both served suspensions for domestic violence. Jordan Babineaux failed a drug test. Lofa Tatupu plead guilty to DUI. And Koren Robinson (who will likely be at training camp), has had too many legal troubles to list. Also not on the roster but in the broadcast booth, Warren Moon, who's had trouble with both domestic violence and DUI.

I know, there are plenty of good characters on the team. There is also the argument that a great team needs some nastiness on the squad. John McGrath at the TNT has a column about the conundrum: if the Seahawks sign Hill can they still call themselves a team built on good character? Not anymore, according to McGrath. Do fans care about character? And while the Seahawks are better with Hill on the turf, I'd second McGrath's motion. But at what cost? Leave any thoughts in the comments below.

Steelers XL letter to Hawks fan for sale

8:24 PM Sun, Jan 25, 2009 |

A Seahawks fan is selling a letter from Pittsburgh owner Dan Rooney. You can buy it on eBay. This story comes via the Seattle Times and Danny O'Neil's blog. The fan wrote then NFL commish Paul Tagliabue, Rooney, and Hawks owner Paul Allen about the poorly refereed Super Bowl between the Hawks & Steelers. Well Rooney wrote back a rather sarcastic response.

Lo and behold just a couple weeks later I received a personal reply from Dan Rooney himself, which was copied to Commissioner Tagliabue, attempting to refute my concerns about the officiating. Mr. Rooney wrote, in part: "You are something special -- you watch a TV broadcast of Super Bowl XL with all the interruptions, camera locations, replays, and now know more than anyone else in America on what was wrong with the officiating."

Well that fan is now selling that wonderful letter to the highest bidder. Right now, at 8:30pm Sunday, it's going for $13.00. You can read more about it right here. The site even shows actual pictures of what you're buying. Anyways, I thought it was kind of funny.
Hope you enjoy.

Report: Hawks LB Hill busted for pot

ESPN.com reports that Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill was arrested for allegedly having two bags of marijuana in his car.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill faces a misdemeanor charge for marijuana possession after authorities found him passed out behind the wheel at an intersection in suburban Atlanta, according to authorities.
"He was at an intersection passed out behind the wheel," Taylor said. "The deputies conducted an investigation and found two bags of marijuana in the car." - espn.com 1/24/09

Hill will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of February. The Hawks have talked about possibly placing the franchise tag on him. Who knows where this will leave him and the Hawks if this holds up in court.

Mike Holmgren is getting back to the Super Bowl -- but this time from the broadcast booth. Holmgren will join Tony Dungy -- both recently retired head coaches -- for NBC's Super Bowl pregame coverage, starting at 9 a.m PST, Dick Ebersol announced Thursday.

"What I learned is that in addition to their obvious Super Bowl credentials, Mike and Tony share extraordinary storytelling ability," Ebersol said. "We're excited to have them make their broadcast debuts with us."

Holmgren led the Seahawks to the 2005 Super Bowl after winning in '97 with the Packers. Dungy was the first black coach to win a Super Bowl, with the Colts in 2007.

Sounders vs. Chelsea FC in summer friendly

10:06 AM Thu, Jan 22, 2009 |

Rumors are flying that a friendly match has been scheduled for July between the Sounders FC and English Premiere League's Chelsea. The game will allegedly be played at the Qwest. A British soccer blog -- EPL Talk -- is reporting news of the match, also saying they've confirmed the rumor through a Sounders FC spokesman. No official word from the team.

According to the EPL Talk blog, the MLS Rumors blog has been reporting that Sounders ticket reps are telling fans about the friendly. GoSounders.com is reporting that ticket reps are telling fans that the game will be included with Sounders season tickets.

Chelsea will already be in the states for a summer tour, so this could happen. Chelsea last played at Qwest Field in 2004, against Celtic. I'll update when KING gets confirmation of the game.

A window opening for Sonics return?

2:18 PM Wed, Jan 21, 2009 |

Maybe it's a slight crack of the window, but a website called ihateclay.com (via supersonicsoul.com) claims the NBA will realign next season. It'll put OKC in the Southwest division and Memphis in the Northwest Division. Now that doesn't really make sense to take a team farther east than the other and put them in the Northwest division. But then again, the commish and Clay Bennett are BFF's. Although, if you would want to read into it, you could make a leap of faith and suggest it's a precursor to Memphis moving to a Northwest city without an NBA team...hmmmm. You can find the blog on the website linked here.

Disclaimer: Who knows who runs the ihateclay.com website. They could be tapping David Stern's phone and have direct knowledge of this or they could be just a fan with a lot of wishful thinking. Either way, it's fun to speculate and hope the Sonics return in some form or another.

Huskies may have committed recruiting infraction

1:35 PM Wed, Jan 21, 2009 |

Only six weeks into Steve Sarkisian's tenure as head coach and the Huskies are already looking into recruiting violation. It's centered around Wilson High recruit Desmond Trufant. Seattle P-I's Molly Yanity has the story.

Trufant described a simulated game-day entrance to the field at Husky Stadium through the tunnel, complete with smoke and noise.
In the story published Monday, Trufant said, "I was shocked by what they did. They acted like it was a real game and they had smoke (in the tunnel) and we ran out of the tunnel. It was nice." seattle p.i. 1/21/09

Apparently, that goes against by-law 13.6.7.9. It sounds like it's right out of the movie "He Got Game" when Jesus Shuttlesworth (aka Ray Allen) was introduced to an empty arena during a recruiting visit. You can read the rest of Molly's story right here.

2010 Super Bowl odds: Seahawks 60-1

10:24 AM Wed, Jan 21, 2009 |

I just caught these 2010 Super Bowl odds on Bloomberg.com and found them interesting (and a little funny). According to Las Vegas Sports Consultants (the company advises casinos on betting lines) Jim Mora's Seahawks have 60-1 odds in winning next year's Super Bowl.

Which team is ahead of the Seahawks? Well, the Niners for starters (this is the funny part). Singletary's team has 40-1 odds to win, slightly ahead of Buffalo (50-1). The Patriots have the best odds at 6-1 and Pittsburgh is next at 7-1. The Spanguolo-less Giants and Colts (really?) are 8-1 and the Cowboys (what are these guys smoking?) are 9-1. The Ravens are next at 11-1 and then Carolina, the Eagles and Titans are 12-1. The Cardinals, by the way, are 15-1.

For the rest of the odds, follow this link.

M's avoid arbitration with Bedard & Heilman

4:13 PM Tue, Jan 20, 2009 |

The Mariners avoided arbitration with pitchers Erik Bedard and Aaron Heilman. It's easy to forget Bedard was one of the top pitchers in baseball, especially when 2008 was a lost year to him due to injury. From '06-'08 he's 7th in ERA and 8th in double digit strikeout games. Again more impressive when you know he really couldn't add to his total due to a bum shoulder. Anyway, you read both news releases after the jump.

Trufant commits & Proposed UW stadium redesign

Ljungberg rehab going better than expected

Seahawks draft: Sanchez in, Bradford out

9:52 AM Fri, Jan 16, 2009 |

In keeping an eye on the Seahawks draft, and more specifically the number four pick (assuming, of course that Ruskell stays his hand and keeps the pick), there were two items of worth this week.

USC QB Matt Sanchez declared for the draft. Being a USC alum, I'd rather hoped Sanchez (a fourth year junior) would stay in school for one more year and take the Trojans to a National Championship. Still, he'd make a great third string QB for the Seahawks. Not only did the 6'3" 225-lb Sanchez set a Rose Bowl record by completing 80 percent of his passes (413 yards, four TDs and one rushing TD), in his senior year he threw for 3,207 yards, 34 TDs and a passer rating of 164.64.

Also of note, Heisman Trophy winner Oklahoma's Sam Bradford announced he's heading back for one more year. Will Bradford's staying in school bump Texas Tech WR Crabtree into the top three? Hard to say. Of course, one could argue that's only worrisome if offensive tackles Andre Smith (Alabama) and Michael Oher (Mississippi) are already taken...

District spokesman David Tucker said the Wrotens acknowledged they had not been in full compliance with the district residency rules, but the family had provided evidence since that demonstrates the family -- and most important, Wroten himself -- now resides in the district. -- Seattle Times 1/15/09

Here's the rest of the Times report. It's good both are making some sort of compromise. Especially to give the kid some continuity.

New Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian today announced he'd hired four assistant coaches and a new staff member. Mike Cox has been hired to coach the linebackers, Jeff Mills the safeties, Doug Nussmeier the QBs and Joel Thomas the running backs. Also, Dennis Slutak was hired as an assistant athletic director. This from Sark:

Slutak spent the last four years at USC as the football operations director. As far as the coaches, Cox spent the last two seasons on the St. Louis Rams' staff and three of the four played football at the University of Idaho. You can read more about the new coaches at Gohuskies.com.

Vancouver scrambles to save Olympic village

10:12 AM Thu, Jan 15, 2009 |

The economic and housing downturn is making matters tough for the Olympics in Vancouver. Most specifically, the city is having a tough time getting the Vancouver athletes village completed in time for the Games. At risk? Housing for most of the 2,800 athletes. And while Vancouver is trying to regoitate a current loan, the city may have to take out a massive new loan to get the village done in time. Here's the rub, as told by Reuters:

Provincial officials are waiting for a request from the city of Vancouver for help refinancing the C$1 billion ($820 million) housing project, which saw its private funding dry up as the Canadian city's real estate market slowed.

The city may be forced to borrow hundreds of millions to get the village ready when the Olympics begin in February 2010. The problem centers around the fact the village was being built by a private investor, who was planning on turning around and selling the 1,100 waterfront apartments as high-priced condos after the Games. Except now the real estate market has tanked and the investor, Fortress Investment Inc, doesn't believe Vancouver can afford to pay the bill.

The athletes village in Whistler is not at risk, according to multiple reports. And while the Vancouver is footing the bill for construction now, the city runs out of capital next month. Then the city will likely need a new loan to keep things rolling. This from USA Today:

The village has an overall price tag of just over $820 million -- the $164 million value of the land it sits on, $615 million for construction, and $103 million in cost overruns. Of that, about $375 million remains to be paid; some will come from the downpayments on presold units and the rest from (the private investor) or the city.

Eek. And Vancouver was already worried about being in the shadow of Beijing. You can read more about the problem at the Seattle Times.

NBA not succeeding in OKC

8:49 PM Wed, Jan 14, 2009 |

Apparently the fans in Oklahoma City aren't that fanatical about the NBA. The good people at "Bend it like Bennett" posted a nice blog comparing the ratings from OKC to Seattle. Let me give you a hint, it's not good. OKC is down compared to Seattle during this basketball season. A season after the Sonics disappeared.

The site's stats come from an article posted by Sports Media Watch, right here. It's pretty interesting to see the numbers. OKC has only about a third of the viewers Seattle had during it's lame duck season. Just a hunch, between Clay and company's stock market struggles and the slumping tv ratings, I'm guessing David Stern may have wanted to rethink that whole move thing-y.

By the way, if you need a good laugh from time to time, you should bookmark Bend it like Bennett, it does a great job of satirizing Bubba Bennett and his cronies.

Sonics return in this economy? Going, going...

10:05 AM Wed, Jan 14, 2009 |

With the tanking economy, frugality is the name of the day. Problem is, Seattle sports fans are starting to see the writing on the wall. State and city budget woes, school cutbacks, Husky Stadium falling apart -- all told, the feeling that the Sonics will ever return to Seattle in our lifetime just feels more and more grim.

Bad ecomony hurting chances

The PI is taking a proud stance on the issue, in numerous recent articles. The Seattle Times Steve Kelley took a similar swing recently, asking local officials to step up or forever forget the green and gold. With all Olympia and Seattle has to handle right now, are the Sonics on anyone's minds? The PI recently asked Gov. Gregoire her take on the chance of bringing the Sonics back. Her answer?

"I can only tell you what I've heard when I've broached the subject with legislators, which is not a lot of interest."

The rub? Seattle Mayor Nickels is not only seeking Seattle money to replace the viaduct with a tunnel, he wants $75 million for the KeyArena's makeover, asking for 14.3 percent of Seattle's hotel tax, money earmarked for the Convention Center. This at a time when the UW wants to use King County's hotel/motel/rental car/restaurant tax to use for a Husky Stadium renovation. Too much need, too little public money.

Ballmer still in picture

However there is some hope. Local developer Matt Griffin recently told the PI that Ballmer and the group of investors are still willing to get involved -- and donate $150 million -- if the city lands the $75 million. Right now, according to Griffin, during a down economy, is the time to act.

"It's kind of counter-intuitive. But you could argue that it's times like this when you have to stimulate business and tourism and visitors and invest in the future. We aren't talking about current budget money out of Olympia, we're talking about future tax streams from people coming to visit the city...Long-term projects that start at the top of an economic cycle usually come to fruition when things are down. So you almost have to think about starting things when the cycle is down."

Private investment

Meanwhile, two entrepreneurs seeking private investment -- former Sonics Fred Brown and partner Dave Bean -- are telling the PI they see a chance. Thinking outside the Key Arena box, the two say they're meeting with private investors this week over the idea to build a different arena to attract the NBA or NHL.

"These guys are for real," Brown told the PI. "That's taken some time. We certainly have had to ferret out a lot of tire kickers, people who say they want to help but don't have the funding. So we'll see."

As time goes on the likelihood that the NBA will come back to Seattle feels more like a full-court heave than a half-court volley. Either way, the city has until 2013 to make Key Arena NBA fit. Or $30 million stays in Bennett and crew's OKC pockets.

The Sounders FC have the 1st pick in the Superdraft on Thursday. It's the team's first draft, but there are rumors they might consider trading the top pick.

If they keep the pick, Akron's Steve Zakuani could be Seattle's Top Pick aka numero uno.

The mlsnet.com thinks you shouldn't be surprised if head coach Sigi Schmid deals the #1 overall pick away. The Superdraft is Thursday at 11am.

Jim Mora's press conference highlights

11:51 AM Tue, Jan 13, 2009 |

I'll post some quick highlights of Jim Mora's first press conference. The coach came out dressed in a suit, flanked by CEO Tod Leiweke and GM Tim Ruskell. Mora kicked things off by saying he was going to get the Seahawks back to getting it right, and regain the team's "winning ways." Obviously, in Mora's view, defense is going to play a huge part in attempting to do so.

Coaches

First off, the team retained 12 coaches. Out: Gil Haskell, John Marshall, Dwayne Board and Keith Gilbertson. According to Mora, Haskell and Marshall both want to remain in the league and are seeking employment.

Getting back to the Super Bowl

When Mora brought up the Super Bowl -- which I caught twice -- both times he was speaking of the defense. Specifically when referring to the new D-coordinator, Gus Bradley. Mora also spoke very highly of Dan Quinn, the team's new assistant head coach/defensive line coach. Mora said his first idea was to give Quinn the D-coordinator job, but after interviewing Bradley, he realized he needed both coaches on the staff to try and get back to the Super Bowl.

Offensive changes

When speaking of the offense, Mora called Hasselbeck his "smart" point guard. He also hinted that there wouldn't be too many changes other than an emphasis on running the football. Mora praised the new O-coordinator, Greg Knapp, and said that having a QB with as much experience as Matt will compliment Knapp's emphasis on the running game -- specifically by allowing Matt to see and change plays before the snap.

Defense, defense, defense

Most of the talk was about the defense, however. About creating a relentless effort (the word relentless was used much in the presser), and coaching to the player's abilities and allow them to understand the new scheme. Mora said the new defense will be attacking, aggressive, and play with a "stinger." That he wants Lofa Tatupu to know the scheme so well, that he doesn't even have to call in the play. That he wants to create a defense that is "situationally smart."

Hands-on coaching

Lastly, Mora said he would in in every special teams meeting and practice, the same in every defensive meeting and would be in most offensive planning sessions. This contrasts Holmgren's style of coaching -- which was to oversee and really only dip in beyond the offense when there were issues. Mora is obviously going to bring a lot of new energy to the Seahawks.

Seahawks make Bradley hiring official

2:43 PM Mon, Jan 12, 2009 |

Here's the Seahawks official press release concerning their new defensive coordinator, Casey "Gus" Bradley and assistant head coach/defensive line coach, Dan Quinn:

Renton, Wash. - The Seattle Seahawks have named Casey Bradley and Dan Quinn their new defensive coordinator and assistant head coach/defensive line coach, respectively, the team announced this afternoon.

Bradley joins Seattle after spending the previous three years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, serving the last two as linebackers coach after joining the Bucs in 2006 as their defensive quality control coach. Prior to Tampa Bay, he spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, North Dakota State (1996-2005), including six as the assistant head coach (2000-05). He also served as defensive coordinator for the Bison from 1997-2002, and again in 2005.
He and his wife, Michaela, have four children, Carter, Anna, Eli and Ella.
Quinn joins Seattle after spending the previous six years coaching the defensive lines for the San Francisco 49ers (2003-04), Miami Dolphins (2005-06) and the New York Jets (2007-08). He began his NFL coaching career in San Francisco as its defensive quality control coach in 2001 before moving to the defensive line.
Married to wife, Stacey.

Seahawks draft watch: QB or WR?

1:25 PM Mon, Jan 12, 2009 |

I thought I'd take some time off from imagining the road to the Super Bowl going through Glendale, Arizona and take a gander at the Seahawks draft. Last week, Tim Ruskell admitted he'd rather take a lower pick than fourth in the draft so the Seahawks may trade this pick away. Still, with Texas Tech's WR Michael Crabtree headed to the NFL and a couple of interesting QB prospects, maybe Ruskell will stay his hand.

One of the PI's blogs has a post today regarding the last few players taken at the No.4 spot. In 2008, the Raiders took LSU's RB Darren McFadden. Back in '07, the Buc selected Clemson DE Gaines Adams (passing on Adrian Peterson). In '06 the Jets took Virginia OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson (passing on Jay Cutler) and in '05 the Bears took Texas RB Cedric Benson. In '04, the Chargers picked North Carolina State QB Philip Rivers. So what about the Seahawks?

FOX Sports, Scout.com have the Seahawks taking Georgia QB Matthew Stafford over Crabtree. Another mock draft at the Bleacher Report has the Seahawks taking Oklahoma's QB Sam Bradford. QB or WR? Tough call.

Washington Redskins begin layoffs

7:06 PM Fri, Jan 09, 2009 |

Below is the AP column on the Redskins layoffs. Sadly, I think we're going to see these stories more and more in the coming months, across all pro sports. Like the article says, the Redskins have sold out every home game since the 1960's.

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins director of player development John Jefferson was among more than 20 people laid off by the team this week as the economic downtown took its toll on one of the NFL's most valuable franchises.

Salary cap analyst Jimmy Halsell also was released, along with the team's longtime director of publications and a member of the public relations department. There were also layoffs among the team's marketing, legal and technology departments.

The layoffs were first reported by The Washington Post.

Jefferson, the former receiver for the San Diego Chargers and Green Bay Packers, had been with the team for nine years, working with players on off-the-field matters during the transitions in and out of their NFL careers.

Jefferson and Halsell were the only people directly involved in the football operations to lose their jobs.

The Redskins are the second-most valuable NFL franchise with an estimated worth of $1.538 billion, according to Forbes' annual rankings. They play in the NFL's largest stadium and have sold out every home game since the 1960s.

Ruskell: Matt back in 2009, and more

10:17 AM Fri, Jan 09, 2009 |

I didn't have a chance yesterday to compile some of the better quotes from Tim Ruskell's press conference, where he spoke of last season and next. The entire presser ran about 44 minutes. You can watch it at Seahawks.com.

Some things Ruskell mentioned: Matt will be the QB for 2009. He would like to resign Bobby Engram, and Leroy Hill could see the franchise tag. Also, Gill Haskell could stay on as a consultant. The TNT put together a longer list of quotes, you can read them here. Okay, here are some of the statements that stood out to me:

On 2008

"Our rush was just never consistent all year long. Whether it was from the four-man or in the blitz packages. We were not getting to the quarterback, and quarterbacks were having way too much time and were way too comfortable running their pass offense."

"I'm not a believer in the size. We have some small players, but do we get rid of Lofa Tatupu and Leroy Hill? That's not it. It's the coordination. The synchronization of the defense, everybody doing their job and putting guys in the positions -- based on their skills -- to be productive. We've got to do a better job of that, and we will do a better job."
"I think 4-12 will be the absolute motivation, certainly on the players' part, to say, We are better than that, and we know that, and we will have to do everything that we possibly can starting immediately to make sure that doesn't happen again. Everybody's pride was hurt. It's a prideful group."

On 2009

"They (Mora and Knapp) were together in Atlanta, with Jim as the head coach. Greg will call the plays, but Jim will have a lot of influence.. What they're going to do a really good job of is based on the personnel....Obviously, with some of the things that we've done with the people we've brought in with the run game, with the addition of Mike Solari and Greg Knapp -- those two guys worked together in San Francisco -- I think we continue to improve our run game. I'm very much a believer in the run game, as is Jim, and if you get the run game going, and the defense, you look at a lot of these playoff teams -- that's a formula that works."
"Matt's our quarterback. We're very happy that he is."
"We like what we're seeing in the draft. There's really no position that's out or in yet. You always have to look at that group and say, Where are we at? Are we getting too old? Same with the defensive line. You don't want to let those slip because they drive the train behind it...(of the No. 4 pick)...I'd still rather pick 32nd."

Sad Day For Western Washington Football Fans

2:58 PM Thu, Jan 08, 2009 |

Western Washington University football players and fans are getting some tough news today, the football program will be no more.

Western Washington University officials announced today that its football program is ending, following a careful evaluation to determine how best to ensure the excellence of all University intercollegiate sports.

"I have made this decision with a heavy heart as I am well aware of the profound consequences it has on the student-athletes on the football team, their dedicated and hard-working coaches, and on our passionate supporters on campus, in the community and region and on our alumni," said Western President Bruce Shepard.

"I feel strongly that we need to offer a high-quality program of intercollegiate athletics that is commensurate with our status as a premier university. It is the focus on maintaining overall intercollegiate program quality and doing so at a time when we and all universities are being challenged financially that drives the recommendation of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and my decision to accept that recommendation," Shepard said.

The coaches and players were notified by University officials that the football program had ended. All current student-athletes will be allowed to retain their scholarships if they remain in school and those transferring to other schools will be eligible to play immediately.

Former Vikings Receiver Mario Casello told me, this is a very sad day. A lot of hard work and dedication will be lost.

Hasselbeck trade idea?

12:34 PM Wed, Jan 07, 2009 |

From the Crazy Files: St. Paul Pioneer Press writer Charley Walters suggests the Minnesota Vikings should solve their quaterback problems by getting Pats QB Matt Cassel. Failing that, they should acquire Hawks QB Matt Hasselbeck for, wait for it, a second round pick.

A more realistic and practical objective, though, might be to trade with Seattle for Matt Hasselbeck, 33, who probably would be available for a second-round draft pick. The Seahawks, 4-12 this season, need to rebuild. - Pioneer Press 1/7/09

First off, Waters claims the Hawks need to rebuild. Maybe if the Vikings lost their entire offensive line and the strength of their offense, the running backs (for the Hawks), was hit with injury after injury they would talk about rebuilding from a 1-15 Vikes team. Secondly, a 2nd round pick for Hasselbeck? A 3-time Pro-Bowler who former head coach Mike Holmgren claims should be entering the prime of his quarterback years?

I guess Waters should get a front row seat when Hasselbeck leads the Hawks into the Metrodome next season. Then Waters can really see what a quarterback looks like since they really haven't had a consistant starter since Tommy Kramer and Fran Tarkenton.

Seahawks coaching search: BC fires Jagodzinski

10:43 AM Wed, Jan 07, 2009 |

If you followed yesterday's buzz about the Seahawks possible interest with Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski as a offensive coordinator candidate, things got more interesting this a.m. as the Boston Herald is reporting that BC has fired the coach. The firing comes after Jagodzinski interviewed for the Jets head coaching position, an interview not sanctioned by Boston College. Jagodzinski, not widely considered the top candidate for the Jets gig, went against a BC order not to do the interview.

So why bring Jagodzinski to the Seahawks? Back in the day he worked alongside Jim Mora as offensive line coach in Atlanta. Before that, he coached Matt Hasselbeck when he was the offensive coordinator at Boston College. And current Atlanta rookie sensation Matt Ryan flourished under Jagodzinski while at BC. In 2007, the Eagles went 11-3 and Jagodzinski was named co-ACC coach of the year. He had been the head coach at BC for the last two years.

More coaches on Seahawks list

Also on the Seahawks coaching radar: Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. Tucker has received permission to interview with the Seahawks for the defensive coordinator position. He also recently interviewed for the Browns head coaching job.

And while I didn't report this yesterday, the Seahawks are also asking permission to interview the Patriots special teams coach, Brad Seely. Seely has been NE's special teams coach for the last 10 years.

UW's Holt salary too much?

7:17 PM Tue, Jan 06, 2009 |

As I'm sure you've heard, the Huskies hired Nick Holt away from USC to become the next defensive coordinator. Holt will make $600,000 his first year and $650,000 in each of the following two seasons. Plus, the Huskies will pay him a $200,000 retention bonus up front, but he will have to pay it back if he leaves early. So Holt gets $800,000 right off the bat.

WSU head coach Paul Wulff makes around $600,000 per season. According to Cougfan.com, his assistants will make $1.13 million total per season. His co-defensive coordinators Chris Ball & Jody Sears will make $170,000 & $140,000 respectively. Ball and Sears are also responsible for two other position coaches. So if you average their salary out, the d-coordinator is making 155 grand. Add that salary to Wulff's and you get $755,000. That's still less than what Holt makes in his first year, including his bonus.

The Huskies football coaches salaries come from the Athletic Department. They're supposedly funded by ticket and tv revenues, merchandise, boosters, and more. They say they don't use any tax dollar to pay the football coaches. I'm not privy to their books, so I've got to take their word for it. Plus, if they did use tax payer dollars, there would be a huge investigation, probably jump started by KING 5's Get Jesse.

If the athletic department is using all that dough for coaches, is all right for them to ask the State Legislature for money to remodel Husky Stadium? Is it fiscally responsible for them to pay like it's a BCS championship contender when they've had five straight losing seasons, including a last season's 0-12 record? Or do they have to pay to get competitive? Do they have to spend money to make money?
We will see on how he reponds and the football players respond next season after they get pounded by another team. Oh by the way, the Huskies open up with LSU September 5th at Husky Stadium.

M's sign reliever Walker

5:01 PM Tue, Jan 06, 2009 |

The Mariners signed reliever Tyler Walker today. Walker played for the Giants last season. He had elbow surgery in July 2006. Walker also recorded 23 saves for San Francisco in 2005. Because it's a one-year deal, he could be a cheap gamble as a short-term replacement for closer J.J. Putz.

'Tez & Randle finalist for Hall of Fame

4:49 PM Tue, Jan 06, 2009 |

Two former Seahawks have made the final cut of 17 players considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Long time Hawk Cortez Kennedy and short time Hawk John Randle made the list. The vote will come down to four to seven players who will be inducted. That vote comes January 31st. Both, in my opinion, should be in the Hall. Tez and Randle were the top players at their positions for some time. The problem, there are a bunch of guys on the list that should be in the Hall. The voters will have a tough time figuring it out.

Texas Tech's mad genius, Mike Leach

12:52 PM Tue, Jan 06, 2009 |

In case you missed this Sunday's 60 Minutes profile of Texas Tech's head coach Mike Leach, I thought I'd embed the piece below. I found it especially interesting, given the UW's attempts to land the coach. Football's Mad Genius is right.

Watch CBS Videos Online

Not that I like to embrace what-ifs, but Leach prowling the UW sideline would certainly have made for some interesting blogging material.

Holt contract details

It seems it took plenty of money to lure Nick Holt away from USC. Contract details came out today. As defensive coordinator, Holt's three year deal with the UW is worth $2.1 million ($700,000 a year). You can read more about the deal here.

Bears offer Marinelli D-line coach job

10:23 AM Tue, Jan 06, 2009 |

updated: The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Bears have offered Rod Marinelli the defensive line coach job. Marinelli left Renton yesterday without a deal after speaking with Mora and Ruskell. Marinelli's agent was unavailable for comment. Like Joel mentioned in the last post, today the Seahawks will reportedly interview Bucs linebackers coach Casey Bradley for the gig. Bradley, another Monte Kiffin disciple, certainly carries less baggage than the 0-16 Marinelli. Bradley has been with the Bucs since 2006. Before that, he coached at North Dakota State.

Another part of what makes this coaching search interesting is exactly what the Seattle Times blog is speculating about today: that Jim Mora is expected to call the defensive plays. We'll have to wait and see how much of that is true on game day, but it's obvious that Mora will, at face value, be way more involved on the defensive side of the ball (than Holmgren). Mora's hands-on approach could also make the position less desirable. It'll also be interesting to see what Mora does with the offensive coordinator job. Gil Haskell had a tough year with all the injuries, and with Matt set in his old QB ways, I'm not sure much needs to be shaken up. Mora's first press conference as the new Seahawks head coach will happen next week.

Another Hawks def. coordinator candidate to visit

5:58 PM Mon, Jan 05, 2009 |

According to the St. Petersburg Times, Bucs linebacker coach Gus Bradley is expected to be in Seattle to interview for a job. Apparently, it's for the defensive coordinator job. So Rod Marinelli isn't the only guy gunning for John Marshall's job, even though Marshall, at this time, still holds the position. If Bradley or Marinelli are a Monte Kiffin (Bucs last d-coordinator) clone/disciple, either one would be a great hire.

Eastern Washington University will retire Rodney Stuckey's jersey Sunday at the Weber State game. Stuckey went to high school at Kentwood. He's currently playing with the Pistons. He's had 38 and 40 point performances already this season.

USC's Holt next Huskies Def. Coordinator

5:09 PM Mon, Jan 05, 2009 |

Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian has hired a new defensive coordinator. USC's Nick Holt accepted the position. He was the Trojans' D-coordinator. He was also Idaho's head coach for two seasons in '04 & '05. Strangely enough, Tyrone Willingham got his first win against Holt and the Vandals. I'm not sure if that's a ringing endorsement for Holt. But then again, maybe he's improved since then. The Dawgs will have a presser tomorrow to introduce the new D.C.

Marinelli in talks with Seahawks

11:06 AM Mon, Jan 05, 2009 |

Jim Mora (and Tim Ruskell) are wasting no time shaking up the shack at Seahawks HQ. Numerous sources are reporting that ex-Lions coach Rod Marinelli is in town and speaking to the Seahawks. Although Marinelli -- a defensive minded coach -- was fired this season by the winless Lions, he could end up being the next Seahawks defensive coordinator. I don't think anyone would be shocked if the current D-coordinator, John Marshall, was let go following a letdown defensive season for the team. Either way, Jim Mora is scheduled to meet with the coaching staff today.

Both the Bears and Seahawks are after Marinelli, according to the NFL Network. Marinelli was a former roommate of Bears head coach Lovie Smith during his time with the Bucs, and met with Smith last week. Marinelli's ties to Tim Ruskell's Seahawks also run deep: Seahawks execs Ruskell and Ruston Webster (VP player personnel) were both with the Bucs when Marinelli was the Tampa Bay defensive line coach.

WHL: T-Birds top 'Tips in ShoWare debut, 4-3

7:03 PM Sun, Jan 04, 2009 |

By Su Ring/Hockey Editor

The Seattle Thunderbirds christened ShoWare Center, their new home in Kent Saturday night, with a little help from cross-town rivals, the Everett Silvertips. The festivities started off with a bang, courtesy of T-Birds mascot Cool Bird and some funky pyrotechnics, including a hockey stick transformed into a giant sparkler, which Cool Bird used to light a ring of fire around the T-Birds logo at center ice. Before the sold out crowd could catch its breath, the team was on the ice, lined up and ready to salute the dignitaries on hand to unveil four team banners raised high to the rafters.

Should the NFL abolish it's blackout policy?

10:55 AM Sat, Jan 03, 2009 |

Update from yesterday's post: The Cardinals game did sellout, barely meeting Friday's deadline. I didn't blog this yesterday, but the Vikings were similarly facing a local blackout for Sunday's game, got an extention from the NFL, and made the second deadline. Following Travis' comment about the blackout policy, what do you think? Should the NFL dump its blackout policy if a game doesn't meet the sellout mark?

Here's a take of the league's rule from The Sports Economist, a blog that looks at economics in sport. The blog is run by professors from the US, UK and Canada:

It is generally accepted that televising games nation-wide helped transform the NFL from a regional entity into the most popular game in the country. Today, most of the NFL's revenue is derived from national, league-wide TV contracts. The blackout policy generates extra incentives for teams to "put fannies in the seats." A full house in Tampa or Seattle makes for a more compelling television spectacle in Richmond or Salt Lake City. The blackout policy balances two interests: the interests of the league in televising games attended by a full house, and the interests of the local team in collecting advertising revenue from local broadcasts of their games.

One point I make repeatedly to my students in sports economics is that pricing a game such that it's a sellout is profit-maximizing only under special circumstances. Absent other considerations, it generally makes sense to price games such that capacity is not fully utilized. Specifically, it makes sense for teams to raise ticket prices above the level that would sell out the game (unless the capacity of the stadium is lower than what is optimal in the long run).
But sold out games full of crazy fans makes for a more compelling spectacle to the marginal, national fan. The NFL's blackout policy limits the incentive of teams to raise ticket prices by putting local advertising revenue at risk. It is a restraint on teams' exploitation of local market power, a restraint which makes the game more appealing in the national television market. The NFL has shown repeatedly that it is more unitized than other leagues. The blackout policy may be another manifestation of that.

The blog above lead to another discussion about the policy, that you can find here.

Cardinals playoff game may be blacked-out

9:53 AM Fri, Jan 02, 2009 |

How lame is this: The NFL has been forced to grant a second (and final) 24-hour television blackout deadline for the Wild Card game against Atlanta on Saturday, because the NFC West Champs can't sellout their game. Guess fans either don't care, can't make it off the golf course, or know the Cards aren't as good as their record. The team has until 2:30 p.m. today to sell the tickets. 3,700 remain.

You can find NFL.com's video preview of the Cards matchup with the Falcons here. Right now Atlanta is favored by 1-point.
