| November 2008Embarrassed. That's how the Seahawks should feel, like I'm surmising the 12th Man already does. The defense was atrocious. It looked like everyone but Mike Holmgren and Matt Hasselbeck gave up during the nationally televised 34-9 trouncing by the Cowboys. The team that Ruskell built. The Seahawks of the future. Today's Thanksgiving Day performance gives thought to a question: Who would fans rather see as the Seahawks GM -- Ruskell or Holmgren? And does anyone think Paul Allen really has the guts to even think about replacing Ruskell? We all remember how long Mr. Allen stuck with Mr. Bob Whitsitt, after Bob sank the Blazers and came periously close to sinking the Seahawks. After this game, does anyone believe this team will challenge the Arizona Cardinals next season, without some serious changes on the roster? ...In the spirit of getting the turkey to the table in time to keep the inmates happy, I'm not going to run the usual game log -- but I'll add any thoughts if something huge happens. Otherwise, please leave any rants, raves, hopes for next season, in the comments section below. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. The inactive list:
"Overall, the weather looks fairly good for the Seahawks game in Dallas on Thanksgiving. Skies should be partly sunny, with only a slight chance of an afternoon shower or thundershower. When I say slight, I mean about ten to twenty percent. Temperatures should be pleasant; the upper 50's to low 60's at kick off, rising into the upper 60's by the second half." - Jeff ...Seattle Thunderbirds press release Kent, WA, November 26, 2008 - The Seattle Thunderbirds are excited to announce single game tickets in their new home, the ShoWare Center, will go on sale starting December 3. ...Adrian Hanauer Opening Statement: The Sounders FC landed Eugene's Nate Jaqua (Houston Dynamos) among the ten players taken in today's Expansion Draft. Seven of the players chosen were MLS starters in 2008, and eight have previous international experience. You can find the Sounders FC press release and the players' career information at the jump. ...There is a shift in the show this week, because the game happens on Thursday. Instead of The Mike Holmgren Show being taped directly after the Dallas game, Paul Silvi will instead sit down with the coach on Friday. That gives fans a few extra days for questions. As the week goes on, I'll try and bump the post closer to the top of the sports blog.
Last week Lori continued her streak by taking the Redskins pick, vaulting Matsukawa to the head of the class with six correct picks. Dennis Bounds has two and Jean Enersen has one. This week, the Seahawks head to Dallas for Thanksgiving. Tony Romo and crew are favored by 12 1/2 points.
The semifinal list was released today for the NFL's 2009 Hall of Fame class and former Seahawks DT stud Cortez Kennedy was one of 25 players who made the cut. Tez faces one more cut to 15 candidates in late December. He'll see some stiff competition from the likes of Chris Doleman, Kevin Greene, Bruce Smith, Derrick Thomas, Cris Carter, Roger Craig, Shannon Sharpe and even former Seahawk/Viking DT John Randle. Congrats to the Tez. The final vote happens on Jan. 31 in Tampa, Fla., the day before the Super Bowl. ...The opening line has Dallas favored by 12 points over the Seahawks for this Thursday's Thanksgiving Day match up. Don't forget Coach Holmgren's press conference is today at noon. Here is this week's game release from Seahawks staff:
in the NFC Wild Card Game. The last two games ended in memorable fashion, and in Seattle's favor. On October 23, 2005, Seattle pieced together a remarkable comeback, scoring 10 points in the final 1:31, to win 13-10. Seattle tied the score at 10 after a six-play, 81-yard drive with :40 remaining in the game. Drew Bledsoe was then picked off by Jordan Babineaux, who returned it to the Dallas 32, allowing Josh Brown to kick the game-winning 50-yard field goal. In the Wild Card Game, Tony Romo bobbled the potential go-ahead field goal hold, picked it up and rushed seven yards only to be tripped up by Babineaux one yard short of a first down late in the game. Seattle won, 21-20. ... Thanks to the The Big Blog at the PI for drawing our attention to this story, as Seattle Sounders FC uniforms were leaked by fans during the MLS Cup this past Sunday. The photo at GOALSeattle.com shows a uniform design which wasn't -- whoops -- supposed to be revealed until a benefit fashion show on December 4th at the WaMu Theater with minority owner Drew Carey.
No, not with the Huskies, Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel has verbally agreed to a deal with Mizzou. The school's Board of Curators (what are they artists?) will have to give final approval before Pinkel can sign the contract. That's expected to happen in a couple of days. ...Su Ring~Producer (Note: I know the 2005 draft had some phenomenal players. I'm only focusing on 3.) A young man stands in front of a bathroom mirror in an Ottawa hotel room. He peers at himself as he smoothes his dark brown hair down, then uses his hands to curl the ends up. He does this repeatedly, talking to an unseen reporter as he does. He is already dressed; his lime green dress shirt looks freshly pressed; a green silk tie is knotted perfectly. He admits feeling nervous. He stops to pick up a can of hair spray, revealing blond streaks in the dark hair. He sprays about a third of the can on his hair, then tries valiantly to curl the ends up again.
Su Ring~ Producer Question: what would you do if you went to a hockey game and your idol showed up? I mean, the game doesn't even feature your favorite team, for whom your idol played his best games. It just so happens that the game you have tickets for, features a tribute to Russian players. You're living the life, hanging in an executive suite with friends and co-workers. Then, lightning strikes and you realize, YOU ARE IN THE SAME ARENA with the player you've idolized for years. Usually Mike Holmgren's press conference concerning the upcoming game is held on Wednesdays, but because of the short schedule going into Thursday's game against the Cowboy's, the Coach's press conference will be tomorrow at noon. You can usually catch these pressers on NWCN or streaming live from Seahawks.com. The team will travel to Dallas on Wednesday. As far as the FOX crew calling the Thanksgiving Day game, Joe Buck will do play-by-play, Troy Aikman will do commentary and Pam Oliver is on the sidelines. ...According to the Seattle Times, pitching coach and Issaquah resident Mel Stottlemyre and most recently bench coach Lee Elia will not be on manager Don Wakamatsu's staff. The Times also reports that A's hitting coach Ty Van Burkleo will be the bench coach. Here's the full article. ...The Sounders FC will take part in their first MLS draft this Wednesday and the team just sent out a press release about preparations for the event. The draft begins at 10 a.m. pst. The Sounders FC will take 10 players in the draft. The team will also be allowed to claim one player from 10 of the current MLS teams (four teams will go unscathed). For the list on unprotected players and the Sounders FC press release, keep reading after the jump. ...NBC has flexed its mightly NFL muscles and bumped the Patriots vs. Seahawks game from prime time. The December 7th game has been moved to a 1:05 p.m. start. The Redskins vs. Ravens will slide into the 5:15 p.m. spot. No big surprise, given the Seahawks record and the fact the Ravens and Redskins are both in playoff contention. These are only rumors so take the news with a grain of salt: With the Columbus Crew winning the MLS Championship last Sunday, many are thinking the Crew's head coach, Sigi Schmid, is numero uno on the list to be the Sounders FC first head coach. Sigi has coached the Crew for three years, and is the second all-time winningest coach in the MLS.
The Seattle Times has a few interesting blogs posted on the Huskies head coaching vacancy. Huskies beat writer Bob Condotta ponders whether Texas defensive coordinator was offered the job. Plus, Condotta found a story about former Texas A&M head coach Dennis Franchione as the school's leading candidate to replace Tyrone Willingham. ...The Seahawks are off to the team's worst start since 1992, and Matt -- the player Mike Holmgren said at the beginning of this season was the most important player for the team -- looks hurt and rattled. Pushing himself. No. 8 is not only throwing some truly awful passes, the Seahawks QB looks out of sorts. Playing injured. Beat up. It's time to consider letting Matt rest and get better for next season. For the last two weeks, Hasselbeck has made mistakes he hasn't made since his first two seasons with the Seahawks. My vote? Sit Matt. Let his back and bulging disk heal. Holmgren's swan song aside, it's time to start thinking about the future of the Seahawks. Because No. 8 is also the most important player for next year. ...Still Hawks ball. Three plays in to the quarter, Bobby Engram catches a 21-yard pass down to the 10. Next play, John Carlson catches a 10-yard touchdown pass. Game tied, 17-17.
Hawks ball first. Josh Wilson returns the kickoff 55 yards. First play, Bobby Engram catches a 13 yard pass. Has Matt settled down? The 'Skins sack Hasselbeck. Seattle's Mare attempts a 53-yard FG, but it's wide right.
Still the Redskins ball. Kind of a weird play, on third and 1, quarterback Jason Campbell faked the hand off and went around the end and jumped over Baraka Atkins to gain a first down. I'm sure every defensive player is lathering at the mouth hoping Campbell tries that again so they can get a good shot at him. Skins eventually punt. Plenty of fanfare for Redskins head coach Jim Zorn. Before the game, he was inducted into the state of Washington Sports Hall of Fame. It's 35 minutes before gametime. As the teams warm up on the field, Mike Holmgren and Jim Zorn are standing on the 50-yard line having a long conversation. Matt Hasselbeck is going thru some drills. He looks loose. Shaun Alexander is suited up for Washington, and is active for today's game. Here are the inactive lists for both teams.
Everett Silvertips Press Release Everett, WA - Looking for that perfect Christmas gift for a friend or loved one? Come into the official Everett Silvertips team store at the Comcast Arena for great Holiday gifts! The team store has increased holiday hours for you to do all your Silvertip shopping without the hassle of fighting the crowds at the mall. In addition to all the jerseys, shirts, caps and pennants that you could possibly dream of, the store is also carrying Christmas ornaments, doggie bowls, glasses and mugs and a whole variety of fun Silvertips paraphernalia. ...Well, that didn't take long. After last night's game against New Orleans, the Thunder fired head coach PJ Carlesimo. Instead of wasting the time writing about OKC, I'll let ESPN explain.
If you have a question for Mike Holmgren, leave it in the comments section below before the end of the game. Then watch The Mike Holmgren Show right here on KING/5, following NBC's Sunday Night Football and see if Paul Silvi asks your question. And don't forget to leave your first name and the city where you live. ...Lori continues her winning ways and takes the Cards pick. That leaves Matsukawa with five picks, Dennis Bounds with two and Jean Enersen with one. This week, the Redskins come to town. Jim Zorn's crew is favored by three points. ESPN.com's experts are picking Washington across the board. USA Today is 50-50 and SI's Peter King is picking the Skins, 23-18.
Su Ring~Producer Over the past week and a half, nearly two dozen NHL teams have unveiled third jerseys that players will wear in a handful of games. These "sweaters" come in a variety of designs, but several teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, have decided to use the third option to honor the team's past. If you thought the fans would turn on the team formerly known as the Sonics this soon, give me the numbers for the next megamillion dollar jackpot. It's game twelve, yes 12, for OKC and the fans are already booing the team. Upon his arrival in Oklahoma City, Carlesimo was told of the city's boo-free zone. -- newsok.com 11/20/08 I guess the team brass or city stretched another truth. As for sellouts, they're on a streak of sorts. They haven't completely sold out a game for four straight games. Five of their seven home games haven't been complete sell outs either.
The Storm will hold a free youth basketball clinic for coaches December 6th. Space is limited so go to the team's website to register (www.storm.wnba.com). Plus, it's free. Storm head coach Brian Agler, Huskies women's hoops coach Tia Jackson, and Storm forward Sheryl Swoopes are scheduled to appear. The complete press release is after the jump. ...Former Huskies goalkeeper Hope Solo is up for a U.S. Soccer award. She's one of six up for the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year. You can vote for Solo here. Fans count for 50% of the vote. The media gets the other 50%. Fans can vote once a day, every day, until December 8th. The complete press release is after the jump. ...The M's busy off-season keeps getting busier. They make several moves to the team's 40-man roster, including losing pitcher Eric O'Flaharty to the Atlanta Braves. You can see all the moves in the M's official press release after the jump. ...I was watching the Blazers last night, when clips of the Miami home game was shown with Wade going off for a 40-point, 11-assist and 5 block night...in front of an nearly empty stadium. Only the second player in NBA history to do so, but no one was watching. In fact, every NBA highlight I've seen this season has been the same. Empty seats.
Rivals.com is reporting that Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Haywood will interview for the Huskies head coaching job. There is a connection for Haywood. Huskies athletic director Scott Woodward, who took over the job in mid-September, is the former director of external affairs in the Office of the Chancellor at LSU, where Haywood served on the Tigers' coaching staff from 1995-2002. - rivals.com Haywood even calls UW A.D. Woodward "a very good friend." I guess I would to if I wanted the job. Anyway, after the M's filled their managerial job, this should be the next hot topic in the area. For the sake of Husky fans, you hope they make a big splash with the school's next hire. Here's rivals.com article on Haywood. Here's his bio from Notre Dame. ...The Seahawks have placed defensive end Patrick Kerney to the injured reserve list. Kerney had his left shoulder surgically repaired by Dr. James Andrews about a couple weeks. Apparently the surgery didn't work. It's very possibly that he'll have to have another surgery to fix the previous surgery. You can see the Seahawks official press release after the jump. ...You can watch the M's live press conference introducing new manager Don Wakamatsu right now on Northwest Cable News or just click on the front page of KING5.com -- it's streaming live on the web. We'll have complete coverage of the presser tonight on KING 5 news at 5pm, 630, 10, & 11...plus, on Northwest Sports Tonight at 9:30pm, 11, 11:30. ...I know, for many fairweather fans playing this game as spoilers is as irrelevant as Shaun Alexander's return to Qwest Field as a backup and Jim Zorn as the Redskins's head coach. Still, the drama exists on the sidelines. The FOX crew calling the game is Matt Vasgersian (play-by-play), J.C. Pearson (commentary) and Nischelle Turner (sidelines). Here's this week's game release, put together by Seahawks staff: The Seahawks host the Washington Redskins this week, led by former Seahawks quarterback and quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn. Kickoff is slated for 1:15 p.m. (PT) and the game will be televised on FOX (channel 13 in Seattle) and broadcast on 97.3 FM in Seattle. This week marks the first game of back-to-back NFC East opponents for Seattle. The Seahawks travel to Dallas to face the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day next week. This year, Seattle is 0-2 vs. the NFC East, losing at New York, 44-6 on October 5, and 26-7 vs. Philadelphia, on November 2. In its last 10 meetings against the NFC East, Seattle is 8-2, including 3-0 in the postseason. In the regular season, Washington holds a 9-4 series lead and has won four consecutive games dating back to the 2001 season, three coming in Washington, D.C. and one in Seattle on November 3, 2002. The two clubs have met in two of the last three postseasons. They met in the 2005 NFC Divisional Playoff Game on January 14, 2006, won by Seattle, 20-10, en route to its first Super Bowl appearance and in last postseason's Wild Card Game on January 5, with Seattle winning 35-14 at Qwest Field. Zorn's Redskins have a familiar look to Seattle fans as he is joined by former running backs coach Stump Mitchell and former running back Sherman Smith on his staff, as well as former players in running back Shaun Alexander, end Phillip Daniels (injured reserve), safety Mike Green, guard Pete Kendall, punter Ryan Plackemeier and cornerback Shawn Springs....As you first heard from KING5 news last night and then the confirmation on the KING5.com and as we broke in on Dr. Phil, the Mariners will name Don Wakamatsu as the team's next manager. Wakamatsu was one of seven candidates, including former Mariner Joey Cora. The M's new skipper had a cup of coffee in the majors as a catcher. He played 18 games in 1991 with the White Sox as Charlie Hough's personal catcher. Plus, he's been a minor league manager or coach and a major league coach for the past 12 seasons. By the way, he played college ball with Barry Bonds.
Texas has named defensive coordinator Will Muschamp as the team's head coach in waiting. So whenever Mack Brown decides to retire, Muschamp will take over. By the way, Brown is only 57. So it could be a decade or more before Brown steps down. I guess Muschamp will make more money. He more than doubled his salary to $900,000 at Texas. But why commit to a college when he probably could get a head coaching job this year or next year? At any rate, if the Huskies really want him, I'm sure they could pony up enough money to pull him to Seattle. Here's a little more on the story. ...Can President-elect Barack Obama get rid of the Bowl Championship Series? Twice in recent television interviews, the President-elect has called for an eight-game college playoff series. Once during his interview with Chris Berman from ESPN at halftime of MNF the night before the election, and most recently in Sunday's interview with 60 Minutes' Steve Kroft. Here's the BCS part of that interview:
KING5 has learned from sources close to the Mariners that A's bench coach Don Wakamatsu is likely the next M's skipper pending approval from the owners in Japan. Wakamatsu spent five season with the Rangers organizations. He's also worked with the Angels. Here's a link for more info on Wakamatsu.
Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck apologized for his comments after Sunday's game against the Cardinals. He said he expected some fines to come down for some of the hits he took yesterday. Today, the quarterback says he regrets saying that and he probably owes someone an apology. He continued to say they played hard, physical, within the rules, and with class and hopes nobody gets fined. Hasselbeck called it a physical game and thought he probably shouldn't have talked so soon after the game. He even joked he may have needed a nap first. Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt didn't think there was any foul play. Here's a couple of Whisenhunt quotes from profootballtalk.com. Today, Hawks head coach Mike Holmgren says there's a rule stating quarterbacks can't be hit in the head. Holmgrean called the Adrian Wilson play as being close to that and it could have gone either way. I'm sure both Holmgren and Hasselbeck are trying to play nice avoid any fines. ...Let's put you in the coaches/GM seat. The Cardinals win put the Seahawks at 2-8 and basically ended the Seahawks chance at getting the NFC crown. Hasselbeck was rocked more than once. No. 8 went for one TD and three INTs with a bulging disk in his back and nerve issues in his leg. Should Matt continue to play out the season? Should Holmgren step back and let Mora transition in now? While I cannot fathom the latter happening, the question will surely be asked. And looking ahead to the draft, what would the 12th Man pick with the first selection? A corner? A WR in the likes of Boldin or Fitzgerald? An offensive lineman? The next Seahawks QB? Plenty of questions that need to be addressed by this team in the offseason. Whatever happens, you have to give it up to the Seahawks. Down the line, I didn't see a single player in blue and green stop playing. ...Wazzu's women's basketball team adds two more recruits for 2009-10. Head coach June Daugherty signed 6'4" Australian Razz Muir and 5'10" German Ireti Amojo. You might remember Amojo from two years ago when she played with Auburn-Riverside in 2006-07 as a foreign exchange student. Amojo will join former teammate Katie Grad at WSU. I don't know much about Muir. According to her bio, she's won titles on numerous levels. Plus she was named a defensive player of the year and a female sports person of the year. Coach Daugherty will have added 11 new players in two years when this class enters school next year. Expect them to be a top 25 team within a few seasons. The whole press release and more on Amojo & Muir is after the jump. ...Here in Western Washington, we sport WHL pride. I mean, how can we not? We boast two teams: the Seattle Thunderbirds and Everett Silvertips. If you go down I-5 to Portland, you've got the Winterhawks. Travel east and you run into the Tri-City Americans and Spokane Chiefs. My friends and I have had a lively discussion lately about liking more than one NHL team. It seems to be more prevalent in hockey than other sports. Why is that? I have two teams I follow faithfully: the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouer Canucks. Yet, I find myself watching other teams, mostly because of one or two players. Hawks ball. Kind of a weird play. Karlos Dansby intercepts Hasselbeck in/near the end zone. As he runs it out, John Carlson forces a fumble. Walter Jones recovers. Seattle gets a new set of downs. TJ Duckett ends up scoring on a 1 yard run. They go for two points but fail. Cards lead, 26-13. -- Cards ball. Brandon Mebane forces Warner to fumble. Darry Tapp recovers. Hawks ball. -- Hawks ball. Duckett scores his second TD of the game from 2 yards out. Cards lead, 26-20. -- Cards ball. After they move the ball a little bit, the Hawks defense gets stout and forces them to punt. -- Hawks ball. They go 3 and out. That's not what they needed. -- Cards ball. The Hawks D allow one first down then forces Arizona to punt again. -- Hawks ball. First play, Hasselbeck throws an interception to Dominque Rodger-Cromartie. That's his second INT of the game. Third one thrown by Hasselbeck. That pretty much ends the game. -- Cards ball. Warner just takes a knee game over. Cards win, 26-20. That probably means the Hawks are done for the year. They fall 5 games back of the Cardinals with 6 games left in the season. Holmgren is 2-8 for the first time in his NFL head coaching career. ...Seattle needs to keep the Cards offense off the field. Arizona had the ball 18 minutes to Seattle's 12. Cards have 263 net yards to Hawks 64 net yards. -- Hawks ball. Deion Branch catches the ball and makes a nice move for 33 yards. Two plays later, Jones fumbles the ball, Darnell Dockett recovers. Coach Holmgren challenges. The play stands. -- Cards ball. Anquan Boldin is wide open for a 44-yard gain. Marcus Trufant was shaken up a few plays later. No word on his injury yet. Arizona settles for a 26 yard field goal. Cards lead, 19-7. The Hawks better get going or this season will nearly be over. -- Hawks ball. Announcers just said Trufant has a concussion and his return is doubtful. Holmgren makes a puzzling call on 3rd & 9. He called a running play for Mo. He didn't come anywhere near the first down. Hawks punt. -- Cards ball. After four plays of gaining 10 yards or more, the Cardinals score on 6 yard screen pass. Arizona leads, 26-7. -- Hawks ball. After a nice return by Josh Wilson, Seattle is marching down. End of the third quarter, Cards lead, 26-7.
-- Hawks ball. Hasselbeck gets clocked by Adrian Wilson for 9 yard loss. A few plays later, Hasselbeck scrambles for 7 yards. I'm sure coach Holmgren was holding his breath on that one. Seattle ends up punting. -- Cards ball. Larry Fitgerald comes up with an incredible catch for 33 yards. Josh Wilson had good coverage, but Fitzgerald is really good. Arizona marchs down into Seahawks territory. Darryl Tapp sacks Warner and Cards settle for a 48 yd FG. Cards lead, 13-0. That makes it three drives for Arizona and three scores. So far, Warner is 18-20 passing. -- Hawks ball. Hasselbeck fumbles and Mike Wahle recovers. Two plays later, Hasselbeck is intercepted by Dominique Rogers-Cromartie. -- Cards ball. Two minute warning, Arizona has the ball on Seattle's 32. Wilson picks Warner off. He goes 58 yards to the Cards 19 yard line. -- Hawks ball. Four plays after the INT, Mo Morris catches a screen pass and goes 13 yards for the score. Cards lead, 13-7. -- Cards ball. They move the ball donw to the Hawks 36. Rackers kicks a 54 yard field goal as time expires. Cards lead, 16-7 at halftime.
I guess it goes without saying, but the Hawks need a win today or the season is over. It's good to see Matt Hasselbeck back. Cardinals get the ball first. -- Cards ball. They march down the field, but the defense keeps them out of the end zone. Rackers kicks a 38 yard field goal. Cards lead, 3-0. -- Hawks ball. Hasselbeck runs out and looks like he hasn't missed a beat. But the Hawks have to punt. -- Cards ball. Anquan Boldin makes a catch and goes 45 yards after Kelly Jennings misses a tackle. A few plays later JJ Arrington runs it in from the 4. Cards lead, 10-0. If you have a question for Mike Holmgren, leave it in the comments section below before the end of the game. Then watch The Mike Holmgren Show right here on KING/5, following NBC's Sunday Night Football and see if Paul Silvi asks your question. And don't forget to leave your first name and the city where you live. ...Two hours before gametime, Matt Hasselbeck was on the field doing a series of drills. He dropped back, planted and threw. He also rolled out and threw without any apparent problems. One of his receivers was Deion Branch who planted his troublesome foot, and made some cuts. Here are the inactive lists for both teams.
Heading down to the Qwest soon, and have yet to see the inactives list. However some roster news as the Seahawks signed safety Jamar Adams from the practiced squad. To make room they released TE Jeb Putzier. Adams signed with Seattle as an undrafted rookie free agent back on April 27, 2008. He played in 47 career games for the University of Michigan, recording 172 tackles and four interceptions. Putzier played in six games, making one start for Seattle. He signed with the club on March 4th. I'll post the list if it comes out before I leave. If not, look for the game log from Joel. ...From the Seahawks:
Lori won last week's pick and widens her lead to four. Dennis has two correct predictions, and Jean has one. Now to this week, Cards at Seahawks. The Cards are favored by 3 points. Glancing at the experts, ESPN.com is 7-2, Cards. USA Today is 7-1 in favor of Arizona. And SI's Peter King is picking the Seahawks, 22-20. As King puts it: "The cavalry rides in for Seattle. The cavalry is bald. See if you can figure that one out."
This news release from the Seattle Thunderbirds: Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell today announced the team has signed Colin Jacobs to a WHL Contract. Jacobs, a 6'2, 190-pound power forward from Coppell, Texas, was a fourth round selection, 67th overall, by the T-Birds in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft. He currently plays for the Dallas Stars U-16 Midget AAA team. ...Bonneville Seattle just sent out a press release announcing a new all-sports radio station is coming to town -- 710 ESPN Seattle. Move over KIRO. Here's the deal: since 1927, 710 has been KIRO, simulcasting news and talk radio on both 97.3 FM and 710 AM. Not anymore. Starting next spring, KIRO news and talk will broadcast over on 97.3 FM only, and 710 ESPN will broadcast sports exclusively. The new station will broadcast Seahawks, Mariners and Sounder FC games. Pretty tall order facing the only show in town, KJR. I'll put the entire press release at the jump. They explain what happens to the Seahawks Huddle, etc. ...Over 350 hopefuls will be at Saturday's open tryouts for the Sounders FC, according to the team. 24 of the prospects will travel to Seattle, where 16 U.S. states will be represented. The tryouts go for three hours, survival-style, with the field being narrowed by speed and fitness drills, skills tests and mini-games.
When you hear the word "Hockeytown", many of you may automatically think of Detroit. And with good reason. The Detroit Red Wings have won more Stanley Cup championships (11) than any American team. The team boasts legends who transcend hockey. Names like Gordie Howe and Steve Yzerman are as well known outside the NHL lines. Good news for the Seahawks. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck practices for the first time in six weeks. He's been out with a with a bad back and leg. A doctor told Hasselbeck he probably won't come back this year. You won't need surgery, but you probably won't play you need a couple months or whatever. Hasselbeck is glad he was wrong. Head coach Mike Holmgren says as long as Matt's breathing and practicing, he's starting on Sunday. It sounds like Charlie Frye will back up Hasselbeck on Sunday. Seneca Wallace's groin injury is causing him some problems. ...Former Husky Tim Lincecum won the NL Cy Young award yesterday, today, he's cashing in on his success. Lincecum will be on the cover of Major League Baseball 2K9. "The Franchise" or "The Freak" says he's stoked to be on the cover. ...The NFL is lower prices for playoff tickets. The tickets will be nearly 10% lower than last year's prices. Plus, teams can or will charge less for the Wild Card games. Profootballtalk.com has the story.
The Cougars just annouced they've signed four players to letters of intent for the 2009-'10 season. Here are their names: 6'5" guard Anthony Brown from Spokane's Shadle Park, 6'8" forward David Chadwick from Charlotte, 6'9" forward Brock Motum from Australia and 6'3" point guard Xavier Thames from Elk Grove, California. Rivals.com has Thames as the 16th best point guard in 2009. You can read more about the players after the jump. ...I was off last week when I called the Seahawks game release the flip card. The flip card is a card that sports writers get before the game that has the offensive and defensive starters by position on one side, as well as the referees. On the flip side, are either team's roster by number, position, height, weight, age, plus the names of either team's coaching staff. It's for easy reference during the game. Here is an example, from the Philly game: Philly.pdf
The Fox crew calling the game Dick Stockton (play-by-play), Brian Baldinger (commentary) and Laura Okmin (sidelines). ...Former Huskies pitcher Tim Lincecum wins the NL Cy Young award today. Is Is it just another blip on the Bill Bavasi era? A couple of years ago, the Mariners picked Cal starter Brandon Morrow over UW starter Tim Lincecum. Obviously, Morrow went to the bullpen and should return to the starting rotation full-time next season.
The Seahawks made the move today and dropped Keary Colbert from the team. Man, the revolving WR door in Renton keeps turning, eh? The move means the Seahawks will likely move Courtney Taylor or Michael Bumpus into the active roster. Colbert, traded for earlier this season from the Denver Broncos for an undisclosed draft pick, dropped two passes in the Dolphins game. ...Come Sunday Matt should be back, but after the Cards win over the 49ers the argument over whether he should be is another matter. Or Matt-er, I guess (insert *sigh here). The Cardinals, who eeked out the win on MNF, will come into the Qwest as 3-point favorites. Problem is, can the Seahawks defense stop Kurt Warner?
Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren says he expects Matt Hasselbeck back and practicing on Wednesday. Holmgren thinks Hasselbeck should start on Sunday against Arizona. But Matt has to make it through practice this week. If Hasselbeck is a no go, Charlie Frye may have to start. Backup QB Seneca Wallace hurt his groin Sunday against the Dolphins. Holmgren says he's not sure Seneca could go against the Cardinals.
The NHL season is well under way and the Canucks are doing fairly well. But how are other NHL teams faring so far? Today, we take a closer look at the Washington Capitals. The nation's capital is buzzing with new hope and new change as Barack Obama prepares to take his place in the White House... and history. DC's hockey team is also buzzing with life, but not from the person most NHL fans would expect. Star sniper Alexander Ovechkin has been fairly quiet on the ice. Instead, another "Alexander" is taking the spotlight. I'll stop here and let Christy D., a Caps fan in Charlottesville Virginia, take the reins and lay out the goods on her team. ...Tonight is a special night in Toronto. The NHL is inducting four very deserving people into the Hall of Fame. They include: former Edmonton Oiler star Glenn Anderson, NHL linesman Ray Scampinello, former Western Hockey League executive Ed Chynoweth, and a Russian player who became known as simply "The Professor."
Its 1968, maybe 69. Full blown Cold War Era. Snow falls softly from a grey sky, shrouding a line of tiny little "men" carrying bags far too large for their pee wee shoulders who trudge past the fertilizer plant, up the long drive to the Voskresensk (or Воскресе́нск, if you prefer) Ice Palace. From this small, fertile hockey obsessed city whose name means "resurrection" came one of the greatest Russian talents to ever play the game. ...Yes, the Mariners have a list of candidates to replace John McLaren & Jim Riggleman. There are seven names who will meet with new GM Jack Zduriencik this week. The M's say they may add to the list as they go through the process of finding a new manager. I can't give you the full press release because it has some information only for the media. So below is part of the release. After the jump you can read some of the candidates backgrounds.
There are currently seven candidates scheduled to interview with Zduriencik this week: Joey Cora (currently the White Sox third base coach), Chip Hale (currently the Diamondbacks third base coach), DeMarlo Hale (currently the Red Sox third base coach), Brad Mills (currently the Red Sox bench coach), Jose Oquendo (currently the Cardinals third base coach), Randy Ready (currently manager of San Diego's AAA affiliate, Portland) and Don Wakamatsu (currently the A's bench coach). Brad Mills will be in Seattle today to interview. Names may be added as the process continues. "I have done a lot of work and made a ton of phone calls talking to people all around the game as we look for the right guy to manage our club next year," Zduriencik said. "I am looking forward to sitting down with each candidate and getting his thoughts on how he can help us with our goal of building this franchise into a World Series winner." ...For the second straight Sunday, the OKC Thunder failed to sellout a home game. They were about 900 short of sellout tonight. If you keeping count at home (and you're probably not), the team formerly known as the Sonics have played four home games and they've failed to sellout two games. By my count, that's 50% success rate for the selling out the Ford Center. There must be a lot to do on a Sunday night in OKC other than going to see the Thunder.
The quarter starts with Kerry Colbert dropping a first down catch (why are they even throwing to No. 13 anymore?). After a Seahawks punt, Pennington picks up a third down blitz for a first down pass. The Dolphins move the ball, beating the Seahawks blitz three times. After converting on fourth and one, the Dolphins get third and one down to the five yard line. The Seahawks D is looking determined, but tired. The Bad Guys' Ronnie Brown rushes for a short TD. Seahawks 13, Dolphins 21.
Josh Wilson starts the second half with a great return to the 50-yard line. The Seahawks have their best drive so far and following a couple of Jones run up the middle that did work, Mare kicks a 37-yard FG. Seahawks 10, Dolphins 14. Seneca looks like the walking wounded.
Ouch. First play of the second quarter? A 51-yard run up the middle for a Ricky Williams rushing TD. Seahawks defense? Already tired. Feels like the lid is slamming shut on Holmgren's last season. Seahawks 0, Dolphins 14.
The Seahawks start by deferring on the flip. Seems Mitch in the Morning is still influencing Holmgren. On the Dolphins' first drive, they go 90 yards and hit on a 39 yard flea flicker to beat Trufant and double coverage. Seahawks 0, Dolphins 7.
It's a gorgeous day in Miami. 80 degrees and sunshine greet the Seahawks at Dolphin Stadium. It's 50 minutes before gametime. The inactive list has just been handed out.
SEAHAWKS Brandon Coutu K
Ernest Wilford WR Lousaka Polite will start at fullback for Casey Cramer ...As always, you know the drill. If you have a question for the Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren, leave it in the comments section below before the end of the Dolphins game this Sunday. Then watch The Mike Holmgren Show right here on KING/5, following NBC's Sunday Night Football and see if Paul Silvi asks your question. And don't forget to leave your first name and the city where you live. ...The Mike Holmgren Show crew arrived in Miami Saturday morning after taking the red-eye across the country. We arrived at the team hotel just as the Hawks were returning from their final walkthrough at Dolphin Stadium. The players and staff had a chance to relax for about four hours before team meetings began. As you can see from the picture below, this is a good place to relax. Super agent Drew Rosenhaus made an appearance poolside with Julius Jones. Rosenhaus is the agent for kicker Olindo Mare.
On the Dolphins front, a 4-4 record is pretty good considering they were 1-15 last season. Of special concern to new coach Tony Sparano is Miami's special teams, and 3rd down offense. Remember, it's the opposition's 3rd down offense that's been giving the Hawks defense fits this season. Here's the rest of the Dolphins breakdown in this Miami Herald article. ...No matter if you think they should bench him for the season to heal or not, Matt Hasselbeck took a big step towards returning today as he threw passes with the third string offense. Eight passes, to be exact. Matt won't make the trip to Miami, but he may get the start for the Arizona game in two weeks.
The Seahawks are 9 1/2-point underdogs to the Dolphins. Even typing that sentence was rough. ESPN.com's experts? All Dolphins. Same with USA Today and SI's Peter King (King is taking the Flippers, 30-9). Last week Lori had the best pick and moves back into first place with three correct predictions. Dennis is second with two, and Jean has one.
I guess the NBA fad has worn off already. This comes courtesy of supersonicsoul.com, in the OKC Thunder's second home game, the team couldn't sell out the arena. According to NBA.com, the Thunder's official home attendance Sunday was 18,136. Supersonicsoul makes the point it was against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but it's still the city's/region's second home game of the franchise, ever. Well, less than one week into their lifetimes as NBA hosts, they couldn't bother to sell out a Sunday night game. I'll say that again: Game 2 of the NBA Experience-Dust Bowl Version was not a sellout. - supersonicsoul.com Last night against the Celtics, the official home attendance was 19,136. Seating capacity for the Ford Center (the OKC's home court) is 19,599. Way to go David Stern. Anyone got the over/under when they'll ask for a new deal or move? ...The Mariners have a streak. It's the Gold Glove streak. For the past 22 seasons, they've had at least one Gold Glove winner on their team. Ichiro wins his 8th glove. Adrian Beltre snags his 2nd AL Gold Glove. Cascade's Grady Sizemore won his second glove, too. The M's official press release is after the jump. ...A public memorial is in the works for Edward McMichael, "Tuba Man," Seattle's beloved sports & entertainment fan. The public celebration will happen at the Qwest Field Event Center and is free. It'll happen on Wednesday, November 12 at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30. Fans are invited to park for free in the North Lot of Qwest Field. Like Joel said earlier, "The Commentators" on KOMO 1000 Newsradio are still taking donations at any Bank of America branch. ...In case you didn't know, every week NFL teams put out flip cards for the upcoming game. Sports reporters can pick up the cards (printed out 8 1/2 x 11 copies) from both teams at Seahawks headquarters. Some teams to a pretty good job at compiling relevant game and season tidbits (others not so good). Here is some info from this week's Seahawks' flip card, put together by Seahawks staff. Fox's Sam Rosen, Tim Ryan and Chris Myers will call the game. Seattle hits the road for its final east coast trip of the season, traveling to Miami for the first time since its season-opening visit in 2000. Kickoff is slated for 10 a.m. (PT) and the game will be televised on FOX (channel 13 in Seattle) and broadcast on 97.3 FM in Seattle. This will be Seattle' second AFC East opponent this season, dropping the season opener at Buffalo, 34-10, on September 7. The Dolphins lead the regular season series by a 6-3 margin and have won two of the previous three meetings since 2000. Of the series' 10 meetings, games have taken place in five different venues. The Seahawks and Dolphins played at the Orange Bowl (1977, 1979), Kingdome (1987, 1992), Dolphin Stadium (1990, 1996, 2000), Husky Stadium (2001) and Qwest Field (2004). The Seahawks return to Dolphin Stadium for the first time since the team's 23-0 defeat on September 3, 2000. Miami then won the following year's meeting at Husky Stadium on October 28, 24-20. In the last meeting on November 21, 2004, at Qwest Field, Miami scored 10 unanswered points to tie the game at 17-17 late in the fourth quarter, only to have Michael Boulware pick off an A.J. Feeley pass and return it 63 yards for the winning score with less than one minute remaining. Week 8's 34-13 win at San Francisco gave Mike Holmgren sole possession of 10th place on the NFL's all-time wins list. His record currently stands at 172-116. He is 2-3 in the regular season vs. Miami and 1-2 while with Seattle....A tough Seattle sports scene gets tougher. Edward McMichael died this week. You know him better as Tuba Man. A medical examiner says he died from injuries sustained last week during a robbery. Police say five teenagers robbed and beat him. As many of you know, the Tuba Man had a heart of gold, but he wasn't a rich man. I'd like to put into words how sad this is, but it's hard to find the words. So I'll link a few stories for you to read.
KOMO-AM has helped create a fund for the services and relatives at any Bank of America branch. Donations can be mailed to Edward the Tuba Man McMichael Memorial Fund, PO Box 4935, Federal Way, 98063 - from the Seattle PI. Feel free to share your memories of Tuba Man in the comments section. Seattle has lost another part of its innocent. Tuba Man will be sorely missed.
Hawks head coach Mike Holmgren hopes quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will return to practice this week. Holmgren thinks he'll return as a scout team quarterback. Hmmm, that should give the pass defense a good workout. Holmgren also hopes/plans for Hasselbeck to be back for next week's Arizona game.
With the Dolphins, Redskins, Cards and Patriots next on the Seahawks list, some 12th Men (and Women) are already turning their thoughts to next year's NFL draft. With the defense seemingly tight, Ruskell great at drafting defensive talent and Mora -- a defensive minded coach -- next in line, what looms for the Seahawks offense next season?
The Everett Aquasox have been sold to a California group. I'm not sure where that leaves minority owners former Mariner Jay Buhner and Republican governor candidate Dino Rossi. The press release doesn't really state if they California group bought 100% of the club or just a majority share. The official press release is after the jump. ...As you can see two blogs below, Monday night's football game between the Redskins and Steelers helped predict today's presidential election winner. It went like this: in the last Redskins home game before an election, if they lose, the party that's in the White House loses. In other words, the Republican party is in the White House, so the Republicans should lose the Presidential election. Right now, MSN.com is calling Democrat Barack Obama as the winner. So after this election, the Redskins win/lose phenomenon prediction has been right 18 out of the last 19 elections. ...Yes, you read that subject line correctly. Who would have thought this at the beginning of this season? The injury-prone Seahawks are opening up as 9 1/2-point underdogs to the Miami Dolphins. The. Miami. Dolphins. Anyone taking the spread? Thankfully, it's not the worst action of the week. At home, San Diego is 16-point favorites over the Kansas City Chiefs. See? Things could be worse for the 12th Man. Can the Seahawks ditch these East Coast games altogether? ...I guess it's true. Over the last 17 elections, this phenomenon has correctly picked the last 17 presidents. Here's how it works. You take the last Redskins home game before an election. If the 'Skins win, the party that's already in the White House remains there. In other words, if Washington wins, John McCain should win the Presidential Election. But if the 'Skins lose, the party that's in the White House is removed. So a Washington loss means George W. Bush's party gets the boot and Democratic Nominee Barack Obama should win the election. Here's a website if you want to see more of the origin. So if you want Obama to win, you'll cheer for the Steelers tonight. If you a McCain backer, you want the Redskins to win. UPDATE: There's is one exception. According to NFL.com, in 2004, the Skins lost to Green Bay, yet Bush remained in office. ...Here's a funny website via supersonicsoul.com in their comments section. It's called iwantoutofokc.com. As you can imagine, it's focused on a talented former Sonic who's now living in purgatory, aka OKC. Although I think their math is off (when the player can opt for free agency), it's still funny. ...The Mariners fill out their 40-man roster today. They add Michael Wilson to it. The outfielder hit 27 homers last season in AA ball. The official press release is after the jump. ...The Mariners fill out their 40-man roster today. They add Michael Wilson to it. The Canucks faced the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings on home ice last night and each team came in with something to lose. The Red Wings had not yet failed to score on a power play. The Canucks had not yet allowed a power play goal. Something was gonna have give, because as sure as the puck will drop, there will be power plays. Wait. Did I say there would be power plays? By the time the final buzzer sounded, both teams racked up a total of 14 penalties. But in between the boarding and fighting and cross-checking, was was pretty darn good hockey. Mike Holmgren just finished his Monday press conference from Renton. As far as the injury bug update, DE Patrick Kerney was tested in Alabama for his repaired shoulder today and doctors want to do exploratory surgery. If it's good news, he'll be out a couple of weeks. If he retore his labrum, Kerney could be done for the season. Holmgren also said rookie DT Red Bryant has a high ankle sprain and will likely be out a couple of weeks. ...Last week on KJR sports radio there was talk of Seattle sports teams being cursed. I laughed as I listened, driving to the supermarket. After this weekend, maybe I should swallow the kool-aid. Cougs, 58-0. Huskies, 56-0. Seahawks 26-7.
The Hawks punt the ball deep. The announcers just make a point that McNabb is 19-20 passing since the end of the 1st quarter. Even still, the Hawks defense has played well enough to win. It's the Hawks offense that hasn't done a thing. They need to put something together soon, time is running out. -- Eagles ball. Philly drives again. Julian Peterson blitzes. McNabb pump fakes and Peterson jumps in the air. McNabb goes around him and throws 16 yard catch to Curtis. Seattle's defense gets tough and forces a field goal. Philly leads, 23-7. -- Hawks ball. They go 3 and out. This game is over. -- Eagles ball. They drive it again, and again the defense holds them to a field goal. This game would be much different if the Hawks could put something, anything together on offense. Philly leads, 26-7. -- Hawks ball. They run the ball twice. Jones gets 26 yards on those carries. But Seattle, again, can't do much else. They punt it and down it at the three. -- Eagles ball. They go 3 and out. Mainly because they didn't try to advance the ball. -- Hawks ball Seahawks look like they wanted to score to get someone positive on offense out of this game, but the Eagles sack Seneca to end the game. Tune into the Mike Holmgren Show. Coach Holmgren will break down what happened and what they need to do to get this back on track. Eagles win, 26-7.
Hawks go into halftime down 14-7 to the Eagles. They started out well with the K-Rob TD and a bunch of 3 and outs by Philly. Seattle needs to sustain an offensive drive and score a touchdown. If they don't, you can forget about winning this game. Seneca looks good managing the game, but the receivers need to start making plays. The defense looks good, except for a couple mistackles which really hurt them. -- Hawks ball. They go 3 and out. Someone needs to start making plays, whether it's Seneca with his feet or the ground game or a receiver who actually fights for the ball. Hawks punt. -- Eagles ball. Philly's Hank Baskett catches a 25-yard pass, but it's under review. He may have hit his right knee out of bounds before dragging his foot. Holmgren challenged it. The refs uphold the call, it's a completion. Philly ends up kicking a 39-yard field goal. At least the defense got off the field without a TD. Eagles lead, 17-7. -- Hawks ball. Third and one, Duckett does his job and runs for a first down. Next play, Mo Morris breaks a run for 28 yards. Seattle needs more than just one big run to win it. Seneca goes yard to Keary Colbert. He nearly had it, but Brian Dawkins bothers him enough to separate him from the ball. Hawks take their 2nd time out. Seattle sets up to go for it on 4th and 10, but Mike Wahle gets called for a false start. Holmgren is steaming. On the punt, Seattle only has 10 players out there. They get called for delay of game. On the punt, Ryan hits a terrible one, but Jackson tries to field it and fumbles it out of bounds. That's the second time Philly has fumbled it out of bounds. Seattle just can't catch a break this season. -- Eagles ball. Seattle is going to spend the rest of the day wondering who the heck is Brent Celek. The Hawks call an all out blitz. McNabb just lofts it high enough for Celek to catch and he runs for 39 yards. But the Hawks get stout near the goal line and come up with two big plays. Philly kicks a 24 yard FG and lead, 20-7. -- Hawks ball. They start well with a 7-yard catch by Carlson. But they can't do anything on the ground. Philly gets good penatration on the next two plays and force a fourth down. ...- Still Hawks ball. Seneca tries another flip pass. This time Owen Schmitt catches it, but it was a little dangerous. Seattle goes another 5 plays and have to punt...thanks to a dropped pass by tight end John Carlson.
- Hawks ball. They go 3 and out. - Eagles ball. The announcers say CB LIto Sheppard has left the game with a groin injury. Philly faces a 4th and inches at the Hawks 35-yard line as the 2-minute warning hits. McNabb does the QB sneak and makes it, but DD Lewis strips him. The refs called him down and say it's not reviewable. Holmgren is mad. They reviewed the Aaron Rogers sneak a couple of weeks ago against the Hawks and called it a TD. So why can't they review this? It doesn't make sense. A couple of plays later, Kevin Curtis shakes Kelly Jennings and makes it down to the one. Next play, McNabb throws it to an offensive lineman, who reported as an eligible receiver, for a 1-yard TD catch. Eagles lead, 14-7. - Hawks ball. They start with a 23-yard pass to Carlson. But fail to do much else. Holmgren is pissed. They show him yelling on the broadcast. Hawks punt. - Eagles ball. Philly runs the ball once and it's halftime. ...Is someone from FOX gonna get in trouble from leaving the Packers/Titans game as Tennessee was about to kick the winning field goal in OT? Now to the good stuff. The Hawks hosting the Eagles at Qwest. Seattle defers to the second half. Eagles get the ball first and go 3 and out. Darryl Tapp caused a fumble, but the ball went out of bounds. - Hawks ball. First play, Seneca Wallace pump fakes and the d-back bites. Koren Robinson is wide open. He goes the distance, 90 yards for the score, thanks to a block by Bobby Engram. Wallace handles Eagles d-coordinator's Jim Johnson's first test. The Eagles blitzed on the first play. - Eagles ball. They go 3 and out again. The d-backs are playing well, so far. Marcus Trufant blankets Kevin Curtis on 3rd down and is pumped. - Hawks ball. Seattle goes 3 and out. K-Rob nearly had another big gainer, but Brian Dawkins separates the ball away from him. End of 1st quarter. Hawks lead, 7-0. ...Not only will the Seahawks defense be without Patrick Kerney, but also Lofa Tatupu. D.D. Lewis will start in Lofa's place. Owen Schmidt will start at fullback for Leonard Weaver, although Weaver is active. Here are the inactive lists for both teams.
