Ruskell's Seahawks lose for Holmgren

5:03 PM Thu, Nov 27, 2008 |

Embarrassed. That's how the Seahawks should feel, like I'm surmising the 12th Man already does. The defense was atrocious. It looked like everyone but Mike Holmgren and Matt Hasselbeck gave up during the nationally televised 34-9 trouncing by the Cowboys. The team that Ruskell built. The Seahawks of the future. Today's Thanksgiving Day performance gives thought to a question: Who would fans rather see as the Seahawks GM -- Ruskell or Holmgren? And does anyone think Paul Allen really has the guts to even think about replacing Ruskell? We all remember how long Mr. Allen stuck with Mr. Bob Whitsitt, after Bob sank the Blazers and came periously close to sinking the Seahawks. After this game, does anyone believe this team will challenge the Arizona Cardinals next season, without some serious changes on the roster?

Sounders FC draft quotes

2:38 PM Wed, Nov 26, 2008 |

Adrian Hanauer Opening Statement:
"We did a lot of research as we headed into this process, and had a very specific philosophy and process in mind to navigate through the expansion draft. We took a lot of time watching video, doing statistical analysis, both analytical and direct experience. We checked a lot of references. Had conversations with players. And we are extremely pleased with the outcome of our expansion draft. We set out to have a very balanced expansion draft, and we feel like we accomplished that. We wanted a combination of experienced veterans, guys who have been there in the trenches. We wanted a blend of guys who can play two, three, four years. Then some young guys, and obviously the way the expansion process works, some of the younger players are less exposed..."

Ask Mike Holmgren a question

7:17 AM Wed, Nov 26, 2008 |

There is a shift in the show this week, because the game happens on Thursday. Instead of The Mike Holmgren Show being taped directly after the Dallas game, Paul Silvi will instead sit down with the coach on Friday. That gives fans a few extra days for questions. As the week goes on, I'll try and bump the post closer to the top of the sports blog.

So...if you have a question for Mike Holmgren, leave it in the comments section before Friday. Then watch The Mike Holmgren Show on KING/5 in it's normal slot following NBC's Sunday Night Football -- and see if Paul asks your question. And as always, don't forget to leave your first name and the city where you live.

The semifinal list was released today for the NFL's 2009 Hall of Fame class and former Seahawks DT stud Cortez Kennedy was one of 25 players who made the cut. Tez faces one more cut to 15 candidates in late December. He'll see some stiff competition from the likes of Chris Doleman, Kevin Greene, Bruce Smith, Derrick Thomas, Cris Carter, Roger Craig, Shannon Sharpe and even former Seahawk/Viking DT John Randle. Congrats to the Tez. The final vote happens on Jan. 31 in Tampa, Fla., the day before the Super Bowl.

Seahawks @ Dallas game release

9:56 AM Tue, Nov 25, 2008 |

The opening line has Dallas favored by 12 points over the Seahawks for this Thursday's Thanksgiving Day match up. Don't forget Coach Holmgren's press conference is today at noon. Here is this week's game release from Seahawks staff:

The Seahawks travel to Dallas this week to make their second national television appearance this year and their third-ever appearance on Thanksgiving Day. Kickoff is slated for 1:15 p.m. (PT) and the game will be televised on FOX (channel 13 in Seattle) and broadcast on 97.3 FM in Seattle. Seattle makes its first Thanksgiving Day appearance since a 31-14 win at Dallas on November 27, 1986, and lost 51-7 on November 27, 1980, in its holiday debut. This year, Seattle is 0-3 vs. the NFC East, losing at New York, 44-6 on October 5, 26-7 vs. Philadelphia on November 2 and 20-17 vs. Washington last week. In its last 11 meetings against the NFC East, Seattle is 8-3, including 3-0 in the postseason. This will be the 11th meeting between the two teams in the regular season, with Dallas holding a 6-4 advantage and Seattle winning three of the last four games. The teams also met once in the postseason on January 6, 2007,
in the NFC Wild Card Game. The last two games ended in memorable fashion, and in Seattle's favor. On October 23, 2005, Seattle pieced together a remarkable comeback, scoring 10 points in the final 1:31, to win 13-10. Seattle tied the score at 10 after a six-play, 81-yard drive with :40 remaining in the game. Drew Bledsoe was then picked off by Jordan Babineaux, who returned it to the Dallas 32, allowing Josh Brown to kick the game-winning 50-yard field goal. In the Wild Card Game, Tony Romo bobbled the potential go-ahead field goal hold, picked it up and rushed seven yards only to be tripped up by Babineaux one yard short of a first down late in the game. Seattle won, 21-20.

NHL: Class of 2005: A tale of 3 players

4:18 PM Mon, Nov 24, 2008 |

Su Ring~Producer

(Note: I know the 2005 draft had some phenomenal players. I'm only focusing on 3.)

A young man stands in front of a bathroom mirror in an Ottawa hotel room. He peers at himself as he smoothes his dark brown hair down, then uses his hands to curl the ends up. He does this repeatedly, talking to an unseen reporter as he does. He is already dressed; his lime green dress shirt looks freshly pressed; a green silk tie is knotted perfectly. He admits feeling nervous. He stops to pick up a can of hair spray, revealing blond streaks in the dark hair. He sprays about a third of the can on his hair, then tries valiantly to curl the ends up again.

NHL: The Kings, the "Professor" and one fabulous fan!

Question: what would you do if you went to a hockey game and your idol showed up? I mean, the game doesn't even feature your favorite team, for whom your idol played his best games. It just so happens that the game you have tickets for, features a tribute to Russian players. You're living the life, hanging in an executive suite with friends and co-workers. Then, lightning strikes and you realize, YOU ARE IN THE SAME ARENA with the player you've idolized for years.

Rumor mill: Sigi for Sounders FC head coach

10:29 AM Mon, Nov 24, 2008 |

These are only rumors so take the news with a grain of salt: With the Columbus Crew winning the MLS Championship last Sunday, many are thinking the Crew's head coach, Sigi Schmid, is numero uno on the list to be the Sounders FC first head coach. Sigi has coached the Crew for three years, and is the second all-time winningest coach in the MLS.

Schimd's contract is up and rumors are swirling about Schimd and the Sounders FC gig, although GM Adrian Hanauer has been vague about filling the position before next week's expansion draft. Who is he? Sigi is the former UCLA and LA Galaxy head coach and one of the winningest collegiate soccer coaches ever (.810 winning % in 19 seasons at UCLA). His Bruins won three NCAA Division I National Championships and made the post-season 16 consecutive times. When he was with the Galaxy, Sigi took the team to two MLS Cup finals (1999 and 2001). You can read more about Sigi here.

Other quick items of note: The 2009 season -- the Sounders FC premiere -- is set to kick off on March 21, earlier than usual. Also, last week the league announced more changes, competition format, schedule parameters, and roster size. You can get more info about the new changes at MLS.com.

Should the Seahawks sit Hasselbeck?

5:06 PM Sun, Nov 23, 2008 |

The Seahawks are off to the team's worst start since 1992, and Matt -- the player Mike Holmgren said at the beginning of this season was the most important player for the team -- looks hurt and rattled. Pushing himself. No. 8 is not only throwing some truly awful passes, the Seahawks QB looks out of sorts. Playing injured. Beat up. It's time to consider letting Matt rest and get better for next season. For the last two weeks, Hasselbeck has made mistakes he hasn't made since his first two seasons with the Seahawks. My vote? Sit Matt. Let his back and bulging disk heal. Holmgren's swan song aside, it's time to start thinking about the future of the Seahawks. Because No. 8 is also the most important player for next year.

Redskins vs. Seahawks 4th qtr. game log

3:29 PM Sun, Nov 23, 2008 |

Still Hawks ball. Three plays in to the quarter, Bobby Engram catches a 21-yard pass down to the 10. Next play, John Carlson catches a 10-yard touchdown pass. Game tied, 17-17.
Don't forget to Ask Mike Holmgren a question about today's game. Click here to ask your question.
-- Redskins ball. They drive the ball down the Hawks throats. But they stall at Hawks 5-yard line and kick a 22-yard field goal. Redskins lead, 20-17.
-- Hawks ball. First play, Mo Morris runs for 10 yards. He has his first 100-yard rushing game of the season. Matt may have been hurt on the last play before they have to punt. We'll try to get an update on his condition. Hawks punt and down it at the 4-yard line.
-- Redskins ball. First three plays Clinton Portis runs for a total of 40 yards. It's the 2-minute warning. Seahawks need a stop soon or it's over. On third and 1, Portis picks up the first down. This game is over, barring a fumble. Guess what, Ladell Betts was stripped of the ball. Baraka Atkins recovers the ball. 1:28 left in the game.
-- Hawks ball. Wow! First play of the drive, Matt throws an interception to Shawn Springs. Redskins wins, 20-17.

Redskins vs. Seahawks 3rd qtr. game log

2:54 PM Sun, Nov 23, 2008 |

Hawks ball first. Josh Wilson returns the kickoff 55 yards. First play, Bobby Engram catches a 13 yard pass. Has Matt settled down? The 'Skins sack Hasselbeck. Seattle's Mare attempts a 53-yard FG, but it's wide right.
-- Redskins ball. They drive the ball down to the Hawks 8-yard line and are forced to kick a 26-yard field goal. Game tied, 10-10.
-- Hawks ball. After two good running plays, it starts to go downhill for the Hawks. First, Koren Robinson drops a pass. He was wide open and no one was near him. Next play, Hasselbeck throws a really bad pass and LeRon Landry picks him off.
-- Redskins ball. Four plays is all it takes. Antwaan Randle-El scores on an 8-yard touchdown catch. 'Skins lead, 17-10.
-- Hawks ball. Wilson makes another nice return to the Hawks 38. Is Matt's back/leg bothering him more than he's letting on? At times, he looks like the Matt of old, then other times, whether it's the receiver's fault or him, Matt looks like he's pressing. By the way, through three quarters, they only have 59 yards passing. Back to the game, Matt scrambles for five yard gain, coming just an inch short of the first down. TJ Duckett comes in and gets the first down. A couple of plays later, Matt connects with Branch on a slant pass. That's the Matt of old. End of third quarter, Redskins lead, 17-10.

...

Redskins vs. Seahawks 2nd qtr. game log

1:56 PM Sun, Nov 23, 2008 |

Still the Redskins ball. Kind of a weird play, on third and 1, quarterback Jason Campbell faked the hand off and went around the end and jumped over Baraka Atkins to gain a first down. I'm sure every defensive player is lathering at the mouth hoping Campbell tries that again so they can get a good shot at him. Skins eventually punt.
-- Hawks ball. First play, Hasselbeck throws high and misses Deion Branch all together. Something is not right. Seattle has a delay of game. Two plays later, Weaver gets called for a false start. Hawks burn their first timeout. On third and 10, Branch drops the ball, but it would have been short of a first down. Hawks punt.
-- Redskins ball. After the sixth play, Santana Moss punches Josh Wilson in the helmet right in front of a ref. I can't believe he didn't get tossed, instead they gave him a 15-yard penalty. Hmmm. A couple of plays later, Moss goes deep and Kelly Jennings gets called for pass interference. Again, maybe Moss should have been tossed. Four plays later, Ladell Betts scores from the one. Clinton Portis may have been hurt a play before the touchdown. Skins lead, 7-3.
-- Hawks ball. Koren Robinson makes a nice grab for 14 yards. Seattle runs the ball the next three plays, 8 yards, 7 yards, and 19 yards. It's the 2-minute warning. Two plays later, the Hawks run back to back screens. The last one is a 4 yard TD catch by Mo Morris. Hawks lead, 10-7.
-- Redskins ball. They get the ball with less than 30 seconds left in the half. Campbell was nearly sacked by Tapp. As he was going down, he threw ball right at Brandon Mebane's hip. I'm sure it wasn't on purpose, it was caused by Tapp's pressure. Halftime, Hawks lead, 10-7

Redskins vs. Seahawks 1st qtr. game log

1:18 PM Sun, Nov 23, 2008 |

Plenty of fanfare for Redskins head coach Jim Zorn. Before the game, he was inducted into the state of Washington Sports Hall of Fame.
-- Redskins ball first. They go three and out. Kelly Jennings knocks away a third down pass attempt to Santana Moss.
-- Hawks ball. They go 3 and out, too. Koren Robinson had a step on Shawn Springs for a big gainer, but Matt Hasselbeck underthrew it a bit.
-- Redskins ball. Darry Tapp sacks Jason Campbell and forces a fumble. But Skins OT Chris Samuels recovers. A few plays later, Julian Peterson sacks Campbell. It's obvious the Hawks are gonna pressure Campbell. They end up punting.
-- Hawks ball. First play, Mo Morris breaks a big one. He goes 44 yards. A couple of plays later, Matt overthrows Engram in the end zone. Next play, he throws it away, but wasn't out side the tackles. Refs call intentional grounding. Mare kicks a 45 yd FG. Hawks lead, 3-0.
-- Redskins ball. Jennings breaks up another pass. Skins drive a bit. But the Hawks defense tightens up when they get just outside the redzone. Shaun Suisham tries a 43-yard FG, but it hits the right bar, no good.
-- Hawks ball. They try to run, but can't. Hawks go 3 and out.
-- Redskins ball. After a couple of penalties, Washington takes a time out. Facing a 3rd and 15, Clinton Portis picks up 16 on a catch and run. It looked like Julian Peterson could have had him after the catch, but he slightly over ran the play. End of the 1st quarter, Hawks lead, 3-0.

The booing begins in OKC

6:07 PM Thu, Nov 20, 2008 |

If you thought the fans would turn on the team formerly known as the Sonics this soon, give me the numbers for the next megamillion dollar jackpot. It's game twelve, yes 12, for OKC and the fans are already booing the team.

Upon his arrival in Oklahoma City, Carlesimo was told of the city's boo-free zone. -- newsok.com 11/20/08

I guess the team brass or city stretched another truth. As for sellouts, they're on a streak of sorts. They haven't completely sold out a game for four straight games. Five of their seven home games haven't been complete sell outs either.

If by chance the team stays in OKC, they'll end up like the LA Clippers of the 80's & 90's. Always getting high draft picks and looking like they could turn a corner, but unable to keep their free agents because of the owner, Donald Sterling, was too cheap to pay them. The team formerly known as the Sonics (aka TTFKATS) will likely follow that path. But it's not because the owners are cheap, it's because they may be going broke due to a bad economy. Or no one will want to stay or play in OKC. Check out this article on sonicscentral.com. I guess the cursethethunder.com website might be working. It's up to 13,895 curses.

Sign of the times: NBA attendance plummeting

10:05 AM Thu, Nov 20, 2008 |

I was watching the Blazers last night, when clips of the Miami home game was shown with Wade going off for a 40-point, 11-assist and 5 block night...in front of an nearly empty stadium. Only the second player in NBA history to do so, but no one was watching. In fact, every NBA highlight I've seen this season has been the same. Empty seats.

The NBA, it turns out, is hardly recession proof. The New York Post reported that last week that the Knicks vs. Grizzlies game in Memphis only had 4,000 fans show (although announced attendence was higher). The stadium holds 17,000. Heck, college or even high school games can draw 4,000.

Like the Post article suggests, don't believe released attendence records. I went to enough Sonics games over the last few years to drop my jaw when the announcer rattled off the nightly attendence at 10,000-plus. And this was after the Sonics had given my workplace dozens of free tickets that afternoon. The NBA has been inflating attendence records for years.

It's not just the little franchises which are hurting. In fact, multilple sources, Yahoo Sports, NY Post, the Bleacher Report are speculating that by spring you'll be seeing NBA and NHL teams close to suspending operations because of these financial woes. I'm a lifelong Sonics fan. Losing the team hurt. I don't want to imagine how the current crisis hurts the NBA's chance of relocating to Seattle -- but why should the legislature, facing a $5.1-billion budget shortfall, help rebuild KeyArena for Stern's current business model?

The hardest hit teams right now according to B/R:

30. Sacramento - 11,947/game
29. Memphis - 12,129/game
28. Philadelphia - 12,601/game
27. Charlotte - 13,312/game

And trust me, those numbers are inflated. Sure, winning helps. And sure, the NBA makes too much money for too many smart, uber wealthy people not to weather this storm. But will it happen in time for the Sonics to return to Seattle?

Apparently the surgery didn't work. It's very possibly that he'll have to have another surgery to fix the previous surgery. You can see the Seahawks official press release after the jump.

Seahawks vs. Redskins game release

9:49 AM Wed, Nov 19, 2008 |

I know, for many fairweather fans playing this game as spoilers is as irrelevant as Shaun Alexander's return to Qwest Field as a backup and Jim Zorn as the Redskins's head coach. Still, the drama exists on the sidelines. The FOX crew calling the game is Matt Vasgersian (play-by-play), J.C. Pearson (commentary) and Nischelle Turner (sidelines). Here's this week's game release, put together by Seahawks staff:

The Seahawks host the Washington Redskins this week, led by former Seahawks quarterback and quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn. Kickoff is slated for 1:15 p.m. (PT) and the game will be televised on FOX (channel 13 in Seattle) and broadcast on 97.3 FM in Seattle. This week marks the first game of back-to-back NFC East opponents for Seattle. The Seahawks travel to Dallas to face the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day next week. This year, Seattle is 0-2 vs. the NFC East, losing at New York, 44-6 on October 5, and 26-7 vs. Philadelphia, on November 2. In its last 10 meetings against the NFC East, Seattle is 8-2, including 3-0 in the postseason. In the regular season, Washington holds a 9-4 series lead and has won four consecutive games dating back to the 2001 season, three coming in Washington, D.C. and one in Seattle on November 3, 2002. The two clubs have met in two of the last three postseasons. They met in the 2005 NFC Divisional Playoff Game on January 14, 2006, won by Seattle, 20-10, en route to its first Super Bowl appearance and in last postseason's Wild Card Game on January 5, with Seattle winning 35-14 at Qwest Field. Zorn's Redskins have a familiar look to Seattle fans as he is joined by former running backs coach Stump Mitchell and former running back Sherman Smith on his staff, as well as former players in running back Shaun Alexander, end Phillip Daniels (injured reserve), safety Mike Green, guard Pete Kendall, punter Ryan Plackemeier and cornerback Shawn Springs.

Wakamatsu the right choice?

4:00 PM Tue, Nov 18, 2008 |

As you first heard from KING5 news last night and then the confirmation on the KING5.com and as we broke in on Dr. Phil, the Mariners will name Don Wakamatsu as the team's next manager. Wakamatsu was one of seven candidates, including former Mariner Joey Cora. The M's new skipper had a cup of coffee in the majors as a catcher. He played 18 games in 1991 with the White Sox as Charlie Hough's personal catcher. Plus, he's been a minor league manager or coach and a major league coach for the past 12 seasons. By the way, he played college ball with Barry Bonds.

So is Wakamatsu the right choice? He interviewed for the A's & Rangers opening in 2006. But this will still be his first managerial job in the majors. Last week, GM Jack Zduriencik made the comment that everyone needs their first job. I guess you could say he's right. Look at what Joe Maddon with the Rays. They didn't do so bad. But for every success story, you could probably find five or more failures. So is Wakamatsu the right choice?

Cross Muschamp off Huskies list

2:46 PM Tue, Nov 18, 2008 |

Texas has named defensive coordinator Will Muschamp as the team's head coach in waiting. So whenever Mack Brown decides to retire, Muschamp will take over. By the way, Brown is only 57. So it could be a decade or more before Brown steps down. I guess Muschamp will make more money. He more than doubled his salary to $900,000 at Texas. But why commit to a college when he probably could get a head coaching job this year or next year? At any rate, if the Huskies really want him, I'm sure they could pony up enough money to pull him to Seattle. Here's a little more on the story.

Obama calls for NCAA football playoffs

9:53 AM Tue, Nov 18, 2008 |

Can President-elect Barack Obama get rid of the Bowl Championship Series? Twice in recent television interviews, the President-elect has called for an eight-game college playoff series. Once during his interview with Chris Berman from ESPN at halftime of MNF the night before the election, and most recently in Sunday's interview with 60 Minutes' Steve Kroft. Here's the BCS part of that interview:

Today the deal was done, taking TV rights for five BCS bowl games from Fox to ESPN, including the national championship by 2011 (the deal would also take the Rose Bowl to cable TV). What do fans think? Is the current BCS deal worth it, even with the big games on cable? Or would an eight-game playoff series be better for the sport?

Wakamatsu Next M's Skipper?

11:04 PM Mon, Nov 17, 2008 |

KING5 has learned from sources close to the Mariners that A's bench coach Don Wakamatsu is likely the next M's skipper pending approval from the owners in Japan. Wakamatsu spent five season with the Rangers organizations. He's also worked with the Angels. Here's a link for more info on Wakamatsu.

Hasselbeck sorry

6:09 PM Mon, Nov 17, 2008 |

Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck apologized for his comments after Sunday's game against the Cardinals. He said he expected some fines to come down for some of the hits he took yesterday. Today, the quarterback says he regrets saying that and he probably owes someone an apology. He continued to say they played hard, physical, within the rules, and with class and hopes nobody gets fined. Hasselbeck called it a physical game and thought he probably shouldn't have talked so soon after the game. He even joked he may have needed a nap first. Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt didn't think there was any foul play. Here's a couple of Whisenhunt quotes from profootballtalk.com. Today, Hawks head coach Mike Holmgren says there's a rule stating quarterbacks can't be hit in the head. Holmgrean called the Adrian Wilson play as being close to that and it could have gone either way. I'm sure both Holmgren and Hasselbeck are trying to play nice avoid any fines.

Seahawks season done. What now?

10:00 AM Mon, Nov 17, 2008 |

Let's put you in the coaches/GM seat. The Cardinals win put the Seahawks at 2-8 and basically ended the Seahawks chance at getting the NFC crown. Hasselbeck was rocked more than once. No. 8 went for one TD and three INTs with a bulging disk in his back and nerve issues in his leg. Should Matt continue to play out the season? Should Holmgren step back and let Mora transition in now? While I cannot fathom the latter happening, the question will surely be asked. And looking ahead to the draft, what would the 12th Man pick with the first selection? A corner? A WR in the likes of Boldin or Fitzgerald? An offensive lineman? The next Seahawks QB? Plenty of questions that need to be addressed by this team in the offseason. Whatever happens, you have to give it up to the Seahawks. Down the line, I didn't see a single player in blue and green stop playing.

Cougars women hoops add 2 more recruits

7:45 PM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

Wazzu's women's basketball team adds two more recruits for 2009-10. Head coach June Daugherty signed 6'4" Australian Razz Muir and 5'10" German Ireti Amojo. You might remember Amojo from two years ago when she played with Auburn-Riverside in 2006-07 as a foreign exchange student. Amojo will join former teammate Katie Grad at WSU. I don't know much about Muir. According to her bio, she's won titles on numerous levels. Plus she was named a defensive player of the year and a female sports person of the year. Coach Daugherty will have added 11 new players in two years when this class enters school next year. Expect them to be a top 25 team within a few seasons. The whole press release and more on Amojo & Muir is after the jump.

Hockey: A look at the AHL

7:30 PM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

Here in Western Washington, we sport WHL pride. I mean, how can we not? We boast two teams: the Seattle Thunderbirds and Everett Silvertips. If you go down I-5 to Portland, you've got the Winterhawks. Travel east and you run into the Tri-City Americans and Spokane Chiefs.
But today, we focus on the AHL (American Hockey League), which features 29 teams connected to NHL teams, including the Vancouver Canucks' farm team, the Manitoba Moose and the San Jose Sharks' farm team, the Worcester Sharks.
Regular contribute Joanne Klever recently traveled to Worcester to check out the AHL.
Here's what she uncovered.

NHL: Torn between two teams? Maybe not.

5:28 PM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

My friends and I have had a lively discussion lately about liking more than one NHL team. It seems to be more prevalent in hockey than other sports. Why is that? I have two teams I follow faithfully: the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouer Canucks. Yet, I find myself watching other teams, mostly because of one or two players.
Regular contributor Joanne Klever wrote an eye opening and extremely persuasive article about her absolute favorite team, the San Jose Sharks, and another team that's caught her eye, the Philadelphia Flyers. Here, she explains the attraction.

Cardinals vs. Seahawks 4th qtr. log

3:41 PM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

Hawks ball. Kind of a weird play. Karlos Dansby intercepts Hasselbeck in/near the end zone. As he runs it out, John Carlson forces a fumble. Walter Jones recovers. Seattle gets a new set of downs. TJ Duckett ends up scoring on a 1 yard run. They go for two points but fail. Cards lead, 26-13.

-- Cards ball. Brandon Mebane forces Warner to fumble. Darry Tapp recovers. Hawks ball.

-- Hawks ball. Duckett scores his second TD of the game from 2 yards out. Cards lead, 26-20.

-- Cards ball. After they move the ball a little bit, the Hawks defense gets stout and forces them to punt.

-- Hawks ball. They go 3 and out. That's not what they needed.

-- Cards ball. The Hawks D allow one first down then forces Arizona to punt again.

-- Hawks ball. First play, Hasselbeck throws an interception to Dominque Rodger-Cromartie. That's his second INT of the game. Third one thrown by Hasselbeck. That pretty much ends the game.

-- Cards ball. Warner just takes a knee game over. Cards win, 26-20. That probably means the Hawks are done for the year. They fall 5 games back of the Cardinals with 6 games left in the season. Holmgren is 2-8 for the first time in his NFL head coaching career.

Cardinals vs. Seahawks 3rd qtr. log

2:36 PM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

Seattle needs to keep the Cards offense off the field. Arizona had the ball 18 minutes to Seattle's 12. Cards have 263 net yards to Hawks 64 net yards.

-- Hawks ball. Deion Branch catches the ball and makes a nice move for 33 yards. Two plays later, Jones fumbles the ball, Darnell Dockett recovers. Coach Holmgren challenges. The play stands.

-- Cards ball. Anquan Boldin is wide open for a 44-yard gain. Marcus Trufant was shaken up a few plays later. No word on his injury yet. Arizona settles for a 26 yard field goal. Cards lead, 19-7. The Hawks better get going or this season will nearly be over.

-- Hawks ball. Announcers just said Trufant has a concussion and his return is doubtful. Holmgren makes a puzzling call on 3rd & 9. He called a running play for Mo. He didn't come anywhere near the first down. Hawks punt.

-- Cards ball. After four plays of gaining 10 yards or more, the Cardinals score on 6 yard screen pass. Arizona leads, 26-7.

-- Hawks ball. After a nice return by Josh Wilson, Seattle is marching down. End of the third quarter, Cards lead, 26-7.

Cardinals vs. Seahawks 2nd qtr. log

1:51 PM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

-- Hawks ball. Hasselbeck gets clocked by Adrian Wilson for 9 yard loss. A few plays later, Hasselbeck scrambles for 7 yards. I'm sure coach Holmgren was holding his breath on that one. Seattle ends up punting.

-- Cards ball. Larry Fitgerald comes up with an incredible catch for 33 yards. Josh Wilson had good coverage, but Fitzgerald is really good. Arizona marchs down into Seahawks territory. Darryl Tapp sacks Warner and Cards settle for a 48 yd FG. Cards lead, 13-0. That makes it three drives for Arizona and three scores. So far, Warner is 18-20 passing.

-- Hawks ball. Hasselbeck fumbles and Mike Wahle recovers. Two plays later, Hasselbeck is intercepted by Dominique Rogers-Cromartie.

-- Cards ball. Two minute warning, Arizona has the ball on Seattle's 32. Wilson picks Warner off. He goes 58 yards to the Cards 19 yard line.

-- Hawks ball. Four plays after the INT, Mo Morris catches a screen pass and goes 13 yards for the score. Cards lead, 13-7.

-- Cards ball. They move the ball donw to the Hawks 36. Rackers kicks a 54 yard field goal as time expires. Cards lead, 16-7 at halftime.

Cardinals vs. Seahawks 1st qtr. log

1:20 PM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

I guess it goes without saying, but the Hawks need a win today or the season is over. It's good to see Matt Hasselbeck back. Cardinals get the ball first.

-- Cards ball. They march down the field, but the defense keeps them out of the end zone. Rackers kicks a 38 yard field goal. Cards lead, 3-0.

-- Hawks ball. Hasselbeck runs out and looks like he hasn't missed a beat. But the Hawks have to punt.

-- Cards ball. Anquan Boldin makes a catch and goes 45 yards after Kelly Jennings misses a tackle. A few plays later JJ Arrington runs it in from the 4. Cards lead, 10-0.

Seahawks sign safety Jamar Adams, release TE

10:49 AM Sun, Nov 16, 2008 |

Heading down to the Qwest soon, and have yet to see the inactives list. However some roster news as the Seahawks signed safety Jamar Adams from the practiced squad. To make room they released TE Jeb Putzier. Adams signed with Seattle as an undrafted rookie free agent back on April 27, 2008. He played in 47 career games for the University of Michigan, recording 172 tackles and four interceptions. Putzier played in six games, making one start for Seattle. He signed with the club on March 4th. I'll post the list if it comes out before I leave. If not, look for the game log from Joel.

Cardinals vs. Seahawks game release

10:23 AM Wed, Nov 12, 2008 |

I was off last week when I called the Seahawks game release the flip card. The flip card is a card that sports writers get before the game that has the offensive and defensive starters by position on one side, as well as the referees. On the flip side, are either team's roster by number, position, height, weight, age, plus the names of either team's coaching staff. It's for easy reference during the game. Here is an example, from the Philly game: Philly.pdf

Now for this week's game release from the Seahawks staff:

The Seahawks return home for the next two weekends and first up are the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 1:05 p.m. (PT) and the game will be televised on FOX (channel 13 in Seattle) and broadcast on 97.3 FM in Seattle. The Seahawks have won five of the last seven meetings and eight of the last 11. The two teams split the two meetings last season and the all-time series is tied at nine games apiece. Since joining the NFC West in 2002, Seattle is 8-4 versus the team from the Valley of the Sun. In the last meeting at Qwest Field on December 9, 2007, Seattle jumped out to a 24-0 lead en route to a 42-21 victory, clinching its fourth consecutive NFC West Division title. Marcus Trufant intercepted a career-high three passes, returning one for an 84-yard touchdown while Matt Hasselbeck threw for four touchdown passes and a 131.6 passer rating. In 10 career games vs. Arizona, Hasselbeck is 171 for 290 for 2,222 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions for a 90.3 passer rating. Two of Hasselbeck's top four passer rating performances have come against Arizona (133.5 on 12/10/06 and 131.6 on 12/9/07). Week 8's 34-13 win at San Francisco gave Mike Holmgren sole possession of 10th place on the NFL's all-time wins list. His record currently stands at 172-117. He is 8-4 in the regular season vs. Arizona.

The Fox crew calling the game Dick Stockton (play-by-play), Brian Baldinger (commentary) and Laura Okmin (sidelines).

Would Mariners still pick Morrow over Lincecum?

4:57 PM Tue, Nov 11, 2008 |

Former Huskies pitcher Tim Lincecum wins the NL Cy Young award today. Is Is it just another blip on the Bill Bavasi era? A couple of years ago, the Mariners picked Cal starter Brandon Morrow over UW starter Tim Lincecum. Obviously, Morrow went to the bullpen and should return to the starting rotation full-time next season.

Would have the M's fortunes changed by drafting Lincecum? He's a local draw. The weird windup & delivery may have scared the Mariners away. Lincecum went 18-5 with a 2.62 ERA and a MLB leading 265 K's. Although, he rarely got a ton of run support. The man they call "The Franchise" would be a nice 1-2 punch with Felix Hernandez. A much better 1-2 punch with any pitcher Bavasi brought in, like Jarrod Washburn, Carlos Silva, Miguel Batista, or, from what we saw this season, Erik Bedard.

I think that would be an interesting conversation. Get Bill Bavasi, former scouting director Bob Fontaine, and VP of Player Personel Benny Looper in a room and go over that conversation leading up to the 2006 MLB Draft. Would they still pick Morrow over Lincecum?

Seahawks drop drop-prone Colbert

Cards favored by three at the Qwest

10:09 AM Tue, Nov 11, 2008 |

Come Sunday Matt should be back, but after the Cards win over the 49ers the argument over whether he should be is another matter. Or Matt-er, I guess (insert *sigh here). The Cardinals, who eeked out the win on MNF, will come into the Qwest as 3-point favorites. Problem is, can the Seahawks defense stop Kurt Warner?

Arizona is third in the NFL in total offense and second in passing. And behind a strong, well coached offensive line, Kurt Warner is tossing up MVP kind of numbers. He's second in the league in passing yards with 2,760. Last night, Warner threw 328 yards and three TDs with a 121.9 passer rating. Here is a vid of his highlights at NFL.com. And frankly, Boldin and Fitzgerald are in a zone.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks secondary is more than suspect. Against the pass, Jennings, Wilson, Trufant and Babineaux are 31st in the NFL. Only the Chargers are worse. For the Seahawks to have a chance, they have to get pressure on Kurt. With Kerney out, that'll be a tall order.

Hasselbeck should start

12:18 AM Tue, Nov 11, 2008 |

Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren says he expects Matt Hasselbeck back and practicing on Wednesday. Holmgren thinks Hasselbeck should start on Sunday against Arizona. But Matt has to make it through practice this week. If Hasselbeck is a no go, Charlie Frye may have to start. Backup QB Seneca Wallace hurt his groin Sunday against the Dolphins. Holmgren says he's not sure Seneca could go against the Cardinals.

As for the other guys, defensive end Patrick Kerney is doubtful. His shoulder is probably to sore from rehabbing it. It's unlikely that he would practice with the team. Holmgren says the coaches will probably have to game plan with the use of fullback Leonard Weaver, too. He bruised his ribs on Sunday. Holmgren wrapped up the injury news by saying he'll know a lot more Wednesday if and when these guys practice.

NHL: A look at the Washington Capitals

The NHL season is well under way and the Canucks are doing fairly well. But how are other NHL teams faring so far? Today, we take a closer look at the Washington Capitals. The nation's capital is buzzing with new hope and new change as Barack Obama prepares to take his place in the White House... and history.

DC's hockey team is also buzzing with life, but not from the person most NHL fans would expect. Star sniper Alexander Ovechkin has been fairly quiet on the ice. Instead, another "Alexander" is taking the spotlight. I'll stop here and let Christy D., a Caps fan in Charlottesville Virginia, take the reins and lay out the goods on her team.

NHL: Igor Larionov and Hockey's Rink of Dreams

6:01 PM Mon, Nov 10, 2008 |

Tonight is a special night in Toronto. The NHL is inducting four very deserving people into the Hall of Fame. They include: former Edmonton Oiler star Glenn Anderson, NHL linesman Ray Scampinello, former Western Hockey League executive Ed Chynoweth, and a Russian player who became known as simply "The Professor."

Igor Larionov played for a number of teams, but is best known, and perhaps best loved for his contributions to the Detroit Red Wings. Tonight, I turn the keyboard over to Justine Sliwka, and one of the most thorough and poignant tributes I have ever read anywhere. Relax and take a field trip through "The Professor's" amazing life.

Igor Larionov and Hockey's Rink of Dreams
~Justine Sliwka

Its 1968, maybe 69. Full blown Cold War Era. Snow falls softly from a grey sky, shrouding a line of tiny little "men" carrying bags far too large for their pee wee shoulders who trudge past the fertilizer plant, up the long drive to the Voskresensk (or Воскресе́нск, if you prefer) Ice Palace. From this small, fertile hockey obsessed city whose name means "resurrection" came one of the greatest Russian talents to ever play the game.

M's announce managerial candidates list

11:22 AM Mon, Nov 10, 2008 |

Yes, the Mariners have a list of candidates to replace John McLaren & Jim Riggleman. There are seven names who will meet with new GM Jack Zduriencik this week. The M's say they may add to the list as they go through the process of finding a new manager. I can't give you the full press release because it has some information only for the media. So below is part of the release. After the jump you can read some of the candidates backgrounds.

SEATTLE, WA -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik will begin interviewing 2009 field manager candidates today in Seattle.

There are currently seven candidates scheduled to interview with Zduriencik this week: Joey Cora (currently the White Sox third base coach), Chip Hale (currently the Diamondbacks third base coach), DeMarlo Hale (currently the Red Sox third base coach), Brad Mills (currently the Red Sox bench coach), Jose Oquendo (currently the Cardinals third base coach), Randy Ready (currently manager of San Diego's AAA affiliate, Portland) and Don Wakamatsu (currently the A's bench coach).

Brad Mills will be in Seattle today to interview. Names may be added as the process continues. "I have done a lot of work and made a ton of phone calls talking to people all around the game as we look for the right guy to manage our club next year," Zduriencik said. "I am looking forward to sitting down with each candidate and getting his thoughts on how he can help us with our goal of building this franchise into a World Series winner."

Thunder sellouts (lack there of)

8:51 PM Sun, Nov 09, 2008 |

For the second straight Sunday, the OKC Thunder failed to sellout a home game. They were about 900 short of sellout tonight. If you keeping count at home (and you're probably not), the team formerly known as the Sonics have played four home games and they've failed to sellout two games. By my count, that's 50% success rate for the selling out the Ford Center. There must be a lot to do on a Sunday night in OKC other than going to see the Thunder.

One last thing to report, rumors are running rampant that Aubrey McClendon's Chesapeake Energy may go under a takeover by BP. Maybe McClendon should have sold his share in his new toy, the Thunder, to save his money-making business, Chesapeake Energy. Supersonicsoul.com has an interesting article on McClendon, too.

Seahawks @ Dolphins, fourth quarter game log

12:14 PM Sun, Nov 09, 2008 |

The quarter starts with Kerry Colbert dropping a first down catch (why are they even throwing to No. 13 anymore?). After a Seahawks punt, Pennington picks up a third down blitz for a first down pass. The Dolphins move the ball, beating the Seahawks blitz three times. After converting on fourth and one, the Dolphins get third and one down to the five yard line. The Seahawks D is looking determined, but tired. The Bad Guys' Ronnie Brown rushes for a short TD. Seahawks 13, Dolphins 21.

Another nice return by Forsett starts the Seahawks at midfield. After a great Jones 33-yard run to the five, Koren doesn't drop this one and gets a TD. On the two-point conversion...Wahle false starts. Are you kidding me? Moved back, the Seahawks then fail on the conversion. Seahawks 19, Dolphins 21.

After a Mare touchback, the Dolphins start with three minutes left at the 20-yard line. The Seahawks valiant effort continues as they force a punt at the two minute warning. Seneca gets the Seahawks to the fifty yard line, but fail to get a first down and the game is over.

Good effort by a depleted Seahawks team. At least they made it interesting. Seahawks lose, 19-21.

Seahawks @ Dolphins, third quarter game log

11:33 AM Sun, Nov 09, 2008 |

Josh Wilson starts the second half with a great return to the 50-yard line. The Seahawks have their best drive so far and following a couple of Jones run up the middle that did work, Mare kicks a 37-yard FG. Seahawks 10, Dolphins 14. Seneca looks like the walking wounded.

Seahawks @ Dolphins, second quarter game log

10:34 AM Sun, Nov 09, 2008 |

Ouch. First play of the second quarter? A 51-yard run up the middle for a Ricky Williams rushing TD. Seahawks defense? Already tired. Feels like the lid is slamming shut on Holmgren's last season. Seahawks 0, Dolphins 14.

Seahawks @ Dolphins, first quarter game log

9:58 AM Sun, Nov 09, 2008 |

The Seahawks start by deferring on the flip. Seems Mitch in the Morning is still influencing Holmgren. On the Dolphins' first drive, they go 90 yards and hit on a 39 yard flea flicker to beat Trufant and double coverage. Seahawks 0, Dolphins 7.

The Seahawks answer by converting their first third down with a short pass to Bobby Engram. On the next third down, Seneca runs for another first down. After a Miami sack, the Seahawks are forced to punt.

Seahawks in Miami -- Saturday

2:33 PM Sat, Nov 08, 2008 |

The Mike Holmgren Show crew arrived in Miami Saturday morning after taking the red-eye across the country. We arrived at the team hotel just as the Hawks were returning from their final walkthrough at Dolphin Stadium. The players and staff had a chance to relax for about four hours before team meetings began. As you can see from the picture below, this is a good place to relax. Super agent Drew Rosenhaus made an appearance poolside with Julius Jones. Rosenhaus is the agent for kicker Olindo Mare.

miami 001.jpg

On the Dolphins front, a 4-4 record is pretty good considering they were 1-15 last season. Of special concern to new coach Tony Sparano is Miami's special teams, and 3rd down offense. Remember, it's the opposition's 3rd down offense that's been giving the Hawks defense fits this season. Here's the rest of the Dolphins breakdown in this Miami Herald article.

Hasselbeck, Branch return to practice

1:16 PM Fri, Nov 07, 2008 |

No matter if you think they should bench him for the season to heal or not, Matt Hasselbeck took a big step towards returning today as he threw passes with the third string offense. Eight passes, to be exact. Matt won't make the trip to Miami, but he may get the start for the Arizona game in two weeks.

Also back on the field and running with the first string offense, Deion Branch. Whether or not Branch gets to play is a different matter. Reports have Holmgren saying he won't activate Branch unless he is assured Branch will be able to play the entire game. According to the Seattle Times, both players have been cleared to play.

Jeff's Seahawks at Dolphins wx forecast

10:27 AM Fri, Nov 07, 2008 |

jeff_left.jpg
"From the soggy, blustery northwest to the summery climes of Miami this Sunday. The Seahawks are likely to enjoy partly sunny skies at kick off, with temperatures in the upper 70's, warming into the low 80's by half time. There's a very slight chance of a shower, thanks to a weak disturbance dropping out of the Midwest. Overall, though...it looks dry...hopefully too dry for the Dolphins." -- Jeff

Thunder Struck(out)

4:09 PM Thu, Nov 06, 2008 |

I guess the NBA fad has worn off already. This comes courtesy of supersonicsoul.com, in the OKC Thunder's second home game, the team couldn't sell out the arena. According to NBA.com, the Thunder's official home attendance Sunday was 18,136. Supersonicsoul makes the point it was against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but it's still the city's/region's second home game of the franchise, ever.

Well, less than one week into their lifetimes as NBA hosts, they couldn't bother to sell out a Sunday night game. I'll say that again: Game 2 of the NBA Experience-Dust Bowl Version was not a sellout. - supersonicsoul.com

Last night against the Celtics, the official home attendance was 19,136. Seating capacity for the Ford Center (the OKC's home court) is 19,599. Way to go David Stern. Anyone got the over/under when they'll ask for a new deal or move?

Seahawks vs. Miami flip card

9:19 AM Thu, Nov 06, 2008 |

In case you didn't know, every week NFL teams put out flip cards for the upcoming game. Sports reporters can pick up the cards (printed out 8 1/2 x 11 copies) from both teams at Seahawks headquarters. Some teams to a pretty good job at compiling relevant game and season tidbits (others not so good). Here is some info from this week's Seahawks' flip card, put together by Seahawks staff. Fox's Sam Rosen, Tim Ryan and Chris Myers will call the game.

Seattle hits the road for its final east coast trip of the season, traveling to Miami for the first time since its season-opening visit in 2000. Kickoff is slated for 10 a.m. (PT) and the game will be televised on FOX (channel 13 in Seattle) and broadcast on 97.3 FM in Seattle. This will be Seattle' second AFC East opponent this season, dropping the season opener at Buffalo, 34-10, on September 7. The Dolphins lead the regular season series by a 6-3 margin and have won two of the previous three meetings since 2000. Of the series' 10 meetings, games have taken place in five different venues. The Seahawks and Dolphins played at the Orange Bowl (1977, 1979), Kingdome (1987, 1992), Dolphin Stadium (1990, 1996, 2000), Husky Stadium (2001) and Qwest Field (2004). The Seahawks return to Dolphin Stadium for the first time since the team's 23-0 defeat on September 3, 2000. Miami then won the following year's meeting at Husky Stadium on October 28, 24-20. In the last meeting on November 21, 2004, at Qwest Field, Miami scored 10 unanswered points to tie the game at 17-17 late in the fourth quarter, only to have Michael Boulware pick off an A.J. Feeley pass and return it 63 yards for the winning score with less than one minute remaining. Week 8's 34-13 win at San Francisco gave Mike Holmgren sole possession of 10th place on the NFL's all-time wins list. His record currently stands at 172-116. He is 2-3 in the regular season vs. Miami and 1-2 while with Seattle.

Seattle mourns the loss of "Tuba Man"

7:38 PM Wed, Nov 05, 2008 |

A tough Seattle sports scene gets tougher. Edward McMichael died this week. You know him better as Tuba Man. A medical examiner says he died from injuries sustained last week during a robbery. Police say five teenagers robbed and beat him. As many of you know, the Tuba Man had a heart of gold, but he wasn't a rich man. I'd like to put into words how sad this is, but it's hard to find the words. So I'll link a few stories for you to read.

Seattle PI's Art Thiel "Tuba Man was a grin set to music"

Seattle PI's blogger Casey McNerthey "Tuba Man was our beloved busker"

Seattle Sports Examiner Andrew Greenberg - The day the music died: Seattle mourns 'The Tuba Man'

Seattle Times' Lornet Turnbull "Family, friends and fans recall the Tuba Man, who dies of injuries from beating"

Here's some information on how you can join a group gathering to play in Tuba Man's honor on Saturday.

KOMO-AM has helped create a fund for the services and relatives at any Bank of America branch. Donations can be mailed to Edward the Tuba Man McMichael Memorial Fund, PO Box 4935, Federal Way, 98063 - from the Seattle PI.

Feel free to share your memories of Tuba Man in the comments section. Seattle has lost another part of its innocent. Tuba Man will be sorely missed.

Hasselbeck scout team QB and injury updates

12:21 PM Wed, Nov 05, 2008 |

Hawks head coach Mike Holmgren hopes quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will return to practice this week. Holmgren thinks he'll return as a scout team quarterback. Hmmm, that should give the pass defense a good workout. Holmgren also hopes/plans for Hasselbeck to be back for next week's Arizona game.

The news keeps getting better. Holmgren says defensive end Patrick Kerney's shoulder surgery went well. They didn't find a complete tear in the labrum. The doctors cleaned out some stuff, but overall it wasn't major. Kerney will stay in Alabama for a few days to rehab with Dr. Andrews staff. Holmgren thinks he could back sometime this season, but he wants the team doctors to look at him before he'll plan of getting Kerney back.

Defensive tackle Red Bryant has a high ankle sprain. He's unlikely to play Sunday. Tight end Will Heller is likely a no go too. Guard Pork Chop Womack is a new injury, according to Holmgren. He says Pork Chop hurt his foot, but he could play on Sunday if things go well this week.

Holmgren was a little hesitant about receiver Deion Branch's future, with good cause. He's tried to workout on his heel, but it has swelled the next day. So Holmgren says they'll work him out hard today and see how his heel responds tomorrow.

Linebacker Lofa Tatupu (groin, concussion) and fullback Leonard Weaver (foot) should return to practice and should play against the Dolphins.

How far will the Seahawks fall?

9:45 AM Wed, Nov 05, 2008 |

With the Dolphins, Redskins, Cards and Patriots next on the Seahawks list, some 12th Men (and Women) are already turning their thoughts to next year's NFL draft. With the defense seemingly tight, Ruskell great at drafting defensive talent and Mora -- a defensive minded coach -- next in line, what looms for the Seahawks offense next season?

A thought came to me again as I was reading Farnsworth's piece in today's PI on the freefall ahead. Can Ruskell pick for offense? Some of Ruskell's picks since joining the team: Defense: LB Leroy Hill & Lofa Tatupu ('05). DT Daryl Tapp, CB Kelly Jennings ('06). DE Brandon Mebane, DE Baraka Atkins, CB Josh Wilson, LB Will Herring ('07). DE Lawrence Jackson, Red Bryant ('08).

Offense? QB David Greene ('05). C Chris Spencer ('05). G Rob Sims, WR Ben Obomanu ('06). G Mansfield Wrotto, WR Courtney Taylor, WR Jordan Kent, G Steve Vallos ('07). TE John Carlson, FB Owen Schmitt, RB Justin Forsett ('08). With Kerney and Tapp in line, I'm still not sure about taking Jackson so high in '08. In hindsight, maybe a WR or a G would have been better. Will Obomanu or Taylor ever turn into real threats? Will Engram return? Will Branch ever play? Will Burleson heal? And what about Koren? (Follow this link for a complete list of Seahawks drafts.)

What does all that mean for the Seahawks offense in the years to come? Only time will tell. But one can certainly see the need for the QB of the future, as well as a scary WR. Here is a Sportings News mock draft thread for 2009 draft. I'll paste one example below.

1 Detroit- Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech
2 St Louis- Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss
3 Kansas City- Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
4 Houston- Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
5 Cleveland- Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
6 Cincinnati- Rey Maualuga, LB, USC
7 Seattle- Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
8 Oakland- Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
9 San Francisco- Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
10 Minnesota- Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
11 New York (Jets)- Beanie Wells, RB, Ohio State
12 Arizona- Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
13 Atlanta- James Laurenitis, LB, Ohio State
14 Green Bay- Taylor Mays, S, USC
15 San Diego- Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

Presidential prediction comes true

7:55 PM Tue, Nov 04, 2008 |

As you can see two blogs below, Monday night's football game between the Redskins and Steelers helped predict today's presidential election winner. It went like this: in the last Redskins home game before an election, if they lose, the party that's in the White House loses. In other words, the Republican party is in the White House, so the Republicans should lose the Presidential election. Right now, MSN.com is calling Democrat Barack Obama as the winner. So after this election, the Redskins win/lose phenomenon prediction has been right 18 out of the last 19 elections.

Seahawks 9.5-point underdogs to Dolphins

10:15 AM Tue, Nov 04, 2008 |

Yes, you read that subject line correctly. Who would have thought this at the beginning of this season? The injury-prone Seahawks are opening up as 9 1/2-point underdogs to the Miami Dolphins. The. Miami. Dolphins. Anyone taking the spread? Thankfully, it's not the worst action of the week. At home, San Diego is 16-point favorites over the Kansas City Chiefs. See? Things could be worse for the 12th Man. Can the Seahawks ditch these East Coast games altogether?

Steelers vs. Redskins to decide Presidential election?

5:51 PM Mon, Nov 03, 2008 |

I guess it's true. Over the last 17 elections, this phenomenon has correctly picked the last 17 presidents. Here's how it works. You take the last Redskins home game before an election. If the 'Skins win, the party that's already in the White House remains there. In other words, if Washington wins, John McCain should win the Presidential Election. But if the 'Skins lose, the party that's in the White House is removed. So a Washington loss means George W. Bush's party gets the boot and Democratic Nominee Barack Obama should win the election. Here's a website if you want to see more of the origin. So if you want Obama to win, you'll cheer for the Steelers tonight. If you a McCain backer, you want the Redskins to win.

UPDATE: There's is one exception. According to NFL.com, in 2004, the Skins lost to Green Bay, yet Bush remained in office.

The Canucks had not yet allowed a power play goal. Something was gonna have give, because as sure as the puck will drop, there will be power plays. Wait. Did I say there would be power plays? By the time the final buzzer sounded, both teams racked up a total of 14 penalties. But in between the boarding and fighting and cross-checking, was was pretty darn good hockey.

Under a hex? Are Northwest sports teams cursed?

9:22 AM Mon, Nov 03, 2008 |

Last week on KJR sports radio there was talk of Seattle sports teams being cursed. I laughed as I listened, driving to the supermarket. After this weekend, maybe I should swallow the kool-aid. Cougs, 58-0. Huskies, 56-0. Seahawks 26-7.

On Sunday the Seahawks put together such a poorly exectuted game -- bad time outs, missing players, all around confusion -- the team was obnoxiously underprepared. Was that a preseason game? The once proud blue and green machine is broken -- and it ain't just the players. Holmgren surely isn't completely to blame. I mean, you can't blame him for a false start of fourth and ten? Right? But why were the Seahawks even going for it instead of kicking a long FG?

When did the curse start? With Schultz selling the Sonics? Is this the Schultz curse? Or maybe when Ruskell lost Hutch? 140 were scored against the three football teams this weekend. 140-7. The only squad which managed a TD was the Seahawks, and those measly points came on a 90 yard pass to Koren that was, really, dumb luck.

The Dawgs 0-8? The Seahawks 1-3 at the Qwest? Home of the 12th Man? The Cougs lose 58-0 to Stanford? Really? I can't imagine what the locker rooms are like. But I can imagine how the fans feel. Cursed.

Eagles vs. Hawks 4th qtr. log

3:44 PM Sun, Nov 02, 2008 |

The Hawks punt the ball deep. The announcers just make a point that McNabb is 19-20 passing since the end of the 1st quarter. Even still, the Hawks defense has played well enough to win. It's the Hawks offense that hasn't done a thing. They need to put something together soon, time is running out.

-- Eagles ball. Philly drives again. Julian Peterson blitzes. McNabb pump fakes and Peterson jumps in the air. McNabb goes around him and throws 16 yard catch to Curtis. Seattle's defense gets tough and forces a field goal. Philly leads, 23-7.

-- Hawks ball. They go 3 and out. This game is over.

-- Eagles ball. They drive it again, and again the defense holds them to a field goal. This game would be much different if the Hawks could put something, anything together on offense. Philly leads, 26-7.

-- Hawks ball. They run the ball twice. Jones gets 26 yards on those carries. But Seattle, again, can't do much else. They punt it and down it at the three.

-- Eagles ball. They go 3 and out. Mainly because they didn't try to advance the ball.

-- Hawks ball Seahawks look like they wanted to score to get someone positive on offense out of this game, but the Eagles sack Seneca to end the game. Tune into the Mike Holmgren Show. Coach Holmgren will break down what happened and what they need to do to get this back on track.

Eagles win, 26-7.

Eagles vs. Hawks 3rd qtr. log

2:59 PM Sun, Nov 02, 2008 |

Hawks go into halftime down 14-7 to the Eagles. They started out well with the K-Rob TD and a bunch of 3 and outs by Philly. Seattle needs to sustain an offensive drive and score a touchdown. If they don't, you can forget about winning this game. Seneca looks good managing the game, but the receivers need to start making plays. The defense looks good, except for a couple mistackles which really hurt them.

-- Hawks ball. They go 3 and out. Someone needs to start making plays, whether it's Seneca with his feet or the ground game or a receiver who actually fights for the ball. Hawks punt.

-- Eagles ball. Philly's Hank Baskett catches a 25-yard pass, but it's under review. He may have hit his right knee out of bounds before dragging his foot. Holmgren challenged it. The refs uphold the call, it's a completion. Philly ends up kicking a 39-yard field goal. At least the defense got off the field without a TD. Eagles lead, 17-7.

-- Hawks ball. Third and one, Duckett does his job and runs for a first down. Next play, Mo Morris breaks a run for 28 yards. Seattle needs more than just one big run to win it. Seneca goes yard to Keary Colbert. He nearly had it, but Brian Dawkins bothers him enough to separate him from the ball. Hawks take their 2nd time out. Seattle sets up to go for it on 4th and 10, but Mike Wahle gets called for a false start. Holmgren is steaming. On the punt, Seattle only has 10 players out there. They get called for delay of game. On the punt, Ryan hits a terrible one, but Jackson tries to field it and fumbles it out of bounds. That's the second time Philly has fumbled it out of bounds. Seattle just can't catch a break this season.

-- Eagles ball. Seattle is going to spend the rest of the day wondering who the heck is Brent Celek. The Hawks call an all out blitz. McNabb just lofts it high enough for Celek to catch and he runs for 39 yards. But the Hawks get stout near the goal line and come up with two big plays. Philly kicks a 24 yard FG and lead, 20-7.

-- Hawks ball. They start well with a 7-yard catch by Carlson. But they can't do anything on the ground. Philly gets good penatration on the next two plays and force a fourth down.

Eagles vs. Hawks 2nd qtr. log

2:02 PM Sun, Nov 02, 2008 |

- Still Hawks ball. Seneca tries another flip pass. This time Owen Schmitt catches it, but it was a little dangerous. Seattle goes another 5 plays and have to punt...thanks to a dropped pass by tight end John Carlson.

-----DON'T Forget to Ask Mike a question. The blog is about 3 down. If you have a question for Head Coach Mike Holmgren about the game, ask it.

- Eagles ball. Philly marches down the field thanks to a 27 yard catch by their tight end Celek. McNabb picks on Trufant and it leads to a score. First, he finds Desean Jackson and Tru fails to wrap him up. That play goes for 14 yards. The next play, the go to Reggie Brown. Tru had him by his feet, but Brown breaks free and scores. Game tied, 7-7.

- Hawks ball. They go 3 and out.

- Eagles ball. The announcers say CB LIto Sheppard has left the game with a groin injury. Philly faces a 4th and inches at the Hawks 35-yard line as the 2-minute warning hits. McNabb does the QB sneak and makes it, but DD Lewis strips him. The refs called him down and say it's not reviewable. Holmgren is mad. They reviewed the Aaron Rogers sneak a couple of weeks ago against the Hawks and called it a TD. So why can't they review this? It doesn't make sense. A couple of plays later, Kevin Curtis shakes Kelly Jennings and makes it down to the one. Next play, McNabb throws it to an offensive lineman, who reported as an eligible receiver, for a 1-yard TD catch. Eagles lead, 14-7.

- Hawks ball. They start with a 23-yard pass to Carlson. But fail to do much else. Holmgren is pissed. They show him yelling on the broadcast. Hawks punt.

- Eagles ball. Philly runs the ball once and it's halftime.

Is someone from FOX gonna get in trouble from leaving the Packers/Titans game as Tennessee was about to kick the winning field goal in OT? Now to the good stuff. The Hawks hosting the Eagles at Qwest.

Seattle defers to the second half. Eagles get the ball first and go 3 and out. Darryl Tapp caused a fumble, but the ball went out of bounds.

- Hawks ball. First play, Seneca Wallace pump fakes and the d-back bites. Koren Robinson is wide open. He goes the distance, 90 yards for the score, thanks to a block by Bobby Engram. Wallace handles Eagles d-coordinator's Jim Johnson's first test. The Eagles blitzed on the first play.

- Eagles ball. They go 3 and out again. The d-backs are playing well, so far. Marcus Trufant blankets Kevin Curtis on 3rd down and is pumped.

- Hawks ball. Seattle goes 3 and out. Four possessions all together and between the Eagles and Hawks they've got three "3 and outs".

- Eagles ball. Another 3 and out. Josh Wilson made a nice play to deflect a pass. Eagles receiver Kevin Curtis may have hurt his hand/wrist on the play. On 3rd down, Craig Terrill makes it to McNabb and hits him as he releases the ball. It falls incomplete. So far, the Hawks defense looks good. Philly punts.

- Hawks ball. I'm sensing a theme. They go 3 and out. Koren Robinson caught a 7-yard pass near the first down marker. Head coach Mike Holmgren nearly threw the red flag to challenge the spot, but they end up punting the ball. They pin them down at the 10.

- Eagles ball. They march the ball down the field. They're helped on a 44-yard pass to tight end Celek. Hawks blitzed Babineaux and McNabb escaped to make that pass. The very next play, McNabb goes for a score, but Deon Grant is there to intercept the pass.

- Hawks ball. Seattle tries an end around with K-Rob but it didn't work. They lost four yards. They punt.

- Eagles ball. They go 3 and out again. Where was this Hawks defense earlier in the season? Trufant looks great, again, knocking a pass away from Kevin Curtis. Philly punts.

- Hawks ball. K-Rob nearly had another big gainer, but Brian Dawkins separates the ball away from him. End of 1st quarter. Hawks lead, 7-0.
