Why are the Seahawks 1-3?

9:51 AM Mon, Oct 06, 2008 |

I can't say for certain why the once proud Seahawks are so woeful outside of Qwest Field. 28th in the league in passing yards? Understandable. 29th in the NFL in points given up? Yesterday was worse than watching the Seahawks defense from the Tom Flores era. What does secondary coach/assistant head coach/next head coach Jim Mora think? Mora was on the bus before reporters could get an answer. Not a great sign. Let's let local sports writers Art Thiel, Steve Kelley and Dave Boling take a stab:

"A creation largely of club president Tim Ruskell, who favors the overlooked and undersized, the defense may be the smallest in the NFL. Compensation was supposed to come in the form of speed and quickness, and it's happened sometimes. Not Sunday." - Art Thiel @ the PI

"There may not be answers. A quarter of the way through the season, the Hawks don't look like they can stop anybody. They can't force momentum-changing turnovers and they are too small to stop the pounding from big running backs like the Giants' Brandon Jacobs...The Seahawks' safeties were late covering. The cornerbacks were filleted. The line couldn't pull down Jacobs, or his backups Derrick Ward or Ahmad Bradshaw."- Steve Kelley @ the Times:
"These linebackers are high-priced team leaders, but they're built for speed, not for bringing down guys like Jacobs. The secondary again looked lost at times, a chronic issue this season. At the core of it, it's coach Jim Mora's job to find solutions, and it's not happening. We may wonder how soon it will be before bloggers start calling for Mora to be fired as the next head coach before he even takes over the team."- Dave Boling @ the TNT:

Anyway it's looked at, yesterday's loss was a serious message. The question is, can this broken Seahawks defense be fixed in time to save the season? And by the way, in Flores three seasons as head coach he never lost by such a large margin of defeat. And that's including the 1992 season, when the Seahawks went 2-14.

Regarding the comments about Mora:

I would like to know what people think about Jim Zorn now that he's finding good success in Washington. I think that people may start questioning whether or not Mora Jr. is the right man for the job if the Hawks (particularly the defensive secondary which Mora coaches) don't start performing up to par. Are people going to start wondering if we let the right man (Jim Zorn) to take over for Holmgren get away?

Also, if the Hawks have a pathetic season do you think there is any possibility of Holmgren returning to correct the teams issues? After his amazing career it would be a SHAME for him to leave with a losing season.

It's simple. They suck. You're damn lucky you drew the Lambs before the bye.
