Eagles vs. Seahawks gameday wx forecast

5:01 PM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |

jeff_left.jpg

"By all means take your rain gear Sunday. A disturbance will brush through late Sunday morning into the early afternoon, resulting in widespread showers. That means the chance of falling rain at kickoff is very high. Showers are likely to continue into the rest of the afternoon, but become more scattered. That offers some hope for occasional dry spells...perhaps even some sunbreaks. Temperatures will be cool, probably in the upper 40's to near 50 at kick off, rising to perhaps the mid 50's at most by the end of the fourth quarter. Let's hope the rain keeps the Eagles grounded!" - Jeff

M's Ibanez files for free agency

4:34 PM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |

Mariners left fielder Raul Ibanez files for free agency. He's joined by utilitymen Willie Bloomquist and Miguel Cairo. The M's also put Mike Morse on the 40-man roster. Morse was out all season after separating his shoulder in the outfield. New GM Jack Zduriencik says he understands Ibanez's worth to the fans, but I don't think that he means he's going to try to sign him at all cost. Plus, Ken Griffey Junior is out there. The PI's John Hickey has an interesting blog on how the M's could bring Junior back to the house he helped build. I wonder if either Junior or Ibanez is worth bringing back. I do know the M's need bats to score runs. Just ask Felix Hernandez about that.

Blazers extend Seattle Prep star

4:22 PM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |

Congrats to former Seattle Prep star Martell Webster. Entering his fourth season in the pros, Webster is recovering from a broken foot. Well that pain was made a little easier by a contract extension. The Blazers signed him to a 4-year extension believed to be worth $20 million. Not bad for guy who's only 22. I know I would have liked making five million a year by the time I was 22. At any rate, the official Blazers press release is after the jump.

Times: Jim Mora not a candidate for UW

1:27 PM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |

The Seattle Times is reporting that Jim Mora will not be a candidate for the head coaching job at the UW. The Seahawks are supposed to release a formal announcment later in the day. Whether or not that makes Husky fans sad, at least the search can go on without this speculation looming.

KING/5 Anchor picks, Eagles @ Seahawks

10:07 AM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |

Happy Halloween everyone. Jean won last week, so she moves into the plus column with one correct pick. She now trails Dennis and Lori, who each have two correct predictions.

So what do the national experts have to say about this weeks matchup? Doom and gloom and vampire bites, just for all those wet trick-or-treaters out there. ESPN.com is all Eagles. USA Today is the same (one writer is even picking the Eagles as a lock). SI's Peter King is calling the game a blowout, Eagles 22, Seahawks 9. And glancing at the Accuscore engine (mostly to see if that's all Peter King goes by), the computer is picking the Eagles, 23-17 (the model thinks the Eagles will register 3.1 sacks, while the Seahawks will get 2.9. I don't know if an injured Kerney was placed in that computation. It was released on the radio this morning that Patrick is out for the game. Kerney is flying to Alabama to be checked out by the doc who did the off-season surgery on the hurting shoulder).

Now for this weeks KING/5 anchor picks. Here's to finding all the best candy, and staying dry tonight...and Sunday. Because I don't know about you, but my seats are in the end zone. I'll have Jeff Renner's gameday forecast posted later in the day, so check back. And boo!

Want to curse the Thunder?

12:14 AM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |

I found this website via Sonicscentral.com. You can actually curse the OKC Thunder on the website. I thought it was kind of funny.

UPDATE: A couple of blogs ago, we asked for your opinion on whether we should cover the Thunder, Blazers, and/or NBA players with local ties. We got 21 responses (at least the last time I looked at it). We've read and talked about the responses and even did a story at 6:30pm on KING 5 and on Northwest Sports Tonight. I guess I just want to say, we do value your opinion on the subject. And keep them coming, if you want to...but thanks for the input.

Mora speaks & no practice for Lofa, Kerney

5:19 PM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |

When asked this afternoon in Renton about the UW opening, Jim Mora said he was there to talk about Josh Wilson and preparing the Seahawks secondary for the Eagles. When asked again, Mora told reporters to refer any questions to his agent. So no news on that front, although the PI is reporting that Mora does not have an out-clause which would allow the coach to leave the Seahawks for the Huskies.

As far as a Seahawks practice update, Patrick Kerney did not participate. Darryl Tapp and Lawrence Jackson worked out in his place. Tatupu and Leonard Weaver also did not practice. However, Koren Robinson did. For the Eagles, G Shaun Andrews, TE LJ Smith and WR Jason Avant did not practice. Andrews won't play at Qwest this Sunday.

NHL: Hockey fights cancer

12:39 PM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |

There are several "givens" when it comes to hockey.
Given: There will be some bone-crushing hits.
Given: There will be some amazing shots and saves.
Given: Someone's gonna drop the gloves and go mano a mano.
Given: One NHL team's gonna hoist Lord Stanley's Cup at the end of the grueling season.

Here's another "given" hockey fans can expect. Every year, all 30 NHL teams join forces in a fight against a bigger enemy: cancer. The "Hockey Fights Cancer" fundraising event marks its 10th anniversary this year and so far, has raised more than $10 million for national and local cancer research institutions, Children's Hospitals, player charities and local cancer organizations.

NHL: A Canucks game from a Bruin's perspective

10:51 AM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |

The Vancouver Canucks took on the Boston Bruins Tuesday night at GM Place and no one looked foward to the game more than Bernie Paille, a lifelong Bruins fan who calls Victoria, BC "home". Add to this passion the fact that before Tuesday, Bernie had not seen an NHL game in person in ten years, and you can almost taste the anticipation and excitement building up within him. Here, Bernie shares his unique perspective about the game and his experience, from start to finish.

NHL: Is the chase for 50 goals in 50 games dead?

10:01 AM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |

Once again, sportswriter Chris Shafer takes up pen... err.. keyboard and offers up an NHL history lesson worthy of much discussion. Why hasn't a player managed to score 50 goals in 50 games in more than a decade? Sit up and pay attention. Professor Shafer is taking the podium. Feel free to add your own theories in the "comments" section.

Should Jim Mora speak to the Huskies?

9:36 AM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |

It's a question that likely is split down the line for fans, Huskies and Seahawks. While the reaction from a past blog indicated that many fans would rather see Jim Mora on the Huskies sidelines, I wanted to ask: Should Jim Mora be allowed to speak with Woodward about the Dawgs head coaching job?

Mora is under contract to replace Holmgren next season. According to the Seattle Times, it's a five-year with more than $4 million annually. Yet still the question swirls. Mora has denied requests for interviews on the subject. The Seahawks organization remains mum. Does the lack of acknowledgment give Husky fans hope? Nick Saban had an out clause that let him leave the Dolphins for Alabama. One has to wonder if Mora has a similar out clause in his contract. One that's printed in purple ink.

California hat trick (or... What's a Red Wings fan doing in LA?)

8:52 AM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |

The NHL boasts fans everywhere and sometimes, the team you follow is not the one found in the town where you happen to reside. Along my hockey travels, I have run into some unique fans finding ways to keep the team spirit alive from afar. Today, I introduce you to Justine Sliwka, a rabid Red Wings fan who just happens to live in the heart of Southern California.

Our NBA coverage - sound off

7:42 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |

While the "Sonics" name is on hiatus, we've changed pro hoops blog name to "NBA". In the coming months, you'll notice some changes in our coverage on TV and the web. Tonight, we'll air the Thunder highlights for the team's opening night and that's it. In the future, we'll focus our on-air coverage and blogs on the Blazers. But our Sports Blog will still have NBA-related stuff including the Thunder and, knock on wood, updates on Steve Ballmer's plan (or anyone else's plan) to return the "Sonics" to Seattle.

Here's your chance to sound off and effect our coverage. Let us know what you'd like to see more Blazers news and/or highlights, NBA coverage, or even mini-updates on the guys who use to play in a Sonic uniform. Trust me, we'll look over the responses and talk it over in the sports office.

OKC Thunder oops! Paints wrong 3-point line

2:59 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |

You have to love basketball karma. From Jerry Bohnen at KTOK:

Oklahoma City officials did some scrambling this week, making a fast-break to prepare the Ford Center's new NBA floor for tonight's first regular season home game for the new Thunder team. The newly-purchased floor contained the wrong 3-point line and crews worked all night long making the corrections and getting it ready for tonight's tipoff against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Tom Anderson, the Special Projects Manager at City Hall explained the floor manufactured by Conner Hardwood Floors of Utah arrived Sunday afternoon. "It was set up at the Ford Center Monday and when we did the measurements we discovered the manufacturer had painted the 3-point line to collegiate standards rather than to NBA standards," he said. The manufacturer dispatched a repair crew to Oklahoma City but the repair work couldn't begin until Tuesday afternoon. The workers had to wait until a Thunder team shoot-around was finished Tuesday morning. "The manufacturer had a team on standby ready to sand down the collegiate 3-point line and repaint the floors so the NBA 3-point line would be correct for tonight's game," added Anderson. "They worked all night long and I just came back from the Ford Center this morning and it's ready to go."

Anderson said the repainting project did not cost anything extra for the City.

Let's just hope it's ownership and not a player who slips on the wet paint.

Holmgren: Matt definitely out

12:11 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |

Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren says quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is definitely out for Sunday's game with the Eagles. He also says tight end Will Heller and receiver Deion Branch will likely not play against Philly. Patrick Kerney is still sore and there's a chance he may not play as well. Holmgren told reporters that Kerney talked to him about his concern for his injury. We'll have more tonight on KING5 News at 5pm, 630pm, 10pm, 11pm and on Northwest Sports Tonight at 9:30pm, 11:30pm on NWCN, and 10:30pm on KONG 6/16.

Thunder to kickoff NBA in OKC. Anyone care?

9:35 AM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |

Okay, I know I'll watch the NBA this season because I enjoy pro hoops. From afar, thanks to Howard Schultz. And while the OKC Plunder kick their season off in podunk Soonerville tonight, does anyone in the greater Seattle area care? Will you even watch the NBA? Maybe root for the Portland Trailblazers? Or the Huskies? Or any other college team? Anyway you crack this rotten nut, this town could really use the Sonics right now. Just to take our minds off the Huskies, Cougs and Seahawks football at least for a little bit.

Husky good news, Gaddy to hoop for Dawgs

10:48 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

In a rare instance of good news for NW sports, Bellarmine Prep hoops star Abdul Gaddy (rated the No.2 point guard in the nation by Scout.com) has decided to sign with the Huskies instead of Arizona. The 6-3, 170-pounder made the change after Arizona coach Lute Olson recently announced his retirement. Apparently Dawgs coach Romar had plenty to do with the change, having numerous conversations with Gaddy and his father. And when the choice came down between switching to UCLA or UW, Gaddy decided on Hec Ed.

Nice to hear some good news in the NW basketball world, especially when the NBA grinds on -- sans Seattle. And talk about fate. The Seattle Times is reporting that the Huskies only had one basketball scholarship left. Gaddy won the Gatorade Washington Boys Basketball Player of the Year Award last season, after leading Bellarmine Prep to third in the 4A Tournament.

Hawks 6 1/2 dogs to Eagles

6:45 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

The Seahawks are opening up as six and half points underdogs to the Eagles. The game will be played at Qwest Field. The Hawks have beaten the Eagles the last two times and 4 out of the last six. Last season, Lofa Tatupu owned them with 3 INT's as Seattle won, 28-24. A couple of seasons ago, the Hawks embarassed the Eagles on Monday night football, walloping them 42-0. So is 6 1/2 point underdogs too much considering the Hawks are at home?

Seven Hawks on 2009 Football HOF nominees list

5:01 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

The NFL released its list of Football Hall of Fame nominees for 2009. Seven Seahawks made the list, including former Husky Lincoln Kennedy. Here's the names of the Hawks.

DT John Randle (1st year - I know he didn't play very long in Seattle)
RB Ricky Watters
DT Cortez Kennedy (A shame he's not in the Hall already)
FS Eugene Robinson
S Kenny Easley (Like 'Tez, most Hawk fans think he's no-brainer, too)
Coach Tom Flores
Coach Chuck Knox

Also on the list, punter Ray Guy should be in the Hall. The NFL's All-Time sack leader Bruce Smith should be an automatic, too. Here's the list of nominees on the NFL's website. The list will be pared down to 25 sometime next month. Eventually, it'll be cut to 15 players before the actual vote.

"Dead leg" equals dead season for Hasselbeck?

4:01 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck explains to KIRO radio today that he doesn't need surgery on his back (I'm guessing for now). The All-Pro QB has failed his strength test again. The bulging disc in his back is causing problems for his right leg. He calls it "dead leg" and he's unable to get the leg to work properly. Who knows if it'll work properly at any time this season. Until then, Seneca Wallace remains the Hawks only hope to win the NFC West.

M's release Scouting Director Fontaine

3:47 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

New M's General Manager Jack Zduriencik is quickly going to work. He's let Scouting Director Bob Fontaine go. Fontaine seems pretty cool about it. Check out his quotes in the Mariners official press release below.

MARINERS VP OF SCOUTING BOB FONTAINE RELIEVED OF DUTIES

SEATTLE, WA - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today that Mariners Vice President of Scouting Bob Fontaine has been relieved of his duties.
"On behalf of the Mariners, we thank Bob for all of his hard work and we wish Bobby the best in his future endeavors," Zduriencik said. "As we move forward in was my determination that a leadership and direction change was necessary."
"Bob is an outstanding person, and an outstanding professional," Zduriencik added. "Decisions of this nature are never easy."
Fontaine was named Vice President of Scouting with the Mariners on Dec. 5, 2003. He was previously the Chicago White Sox Director of Player Development (2000-2003) and has also worked the San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos and Anaheim Angels.
"I understand that when a new General Manager comes in he often brings his own scouting people with him," Fontaine said. "Seattle treated me well and I'm very appreciative. I enjoyed my time here."
A new scouting director will be named at a later date.

Sounders FC sign Swedish soccer star

1:35 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

From the Sounders FC:

The Seattle Sounders FC has signed midfielder Freddie Ljungberg to a multi-year
contract, the team announced today. Ljungberg starred for 10 seasons in the English Premier League and served as captain of Sweden during this past summer's European Championships.

Ljungberg, 31, becomes the seventh Designated Player in Major League Soccer. The Designated Player rule, adopted prior to the 2007 season, allows teams to sign a player that would not count against the salary cap. Ljungberg (pronounced LOON-berg) was a free agent, having last played for England's West Ham United in 2007-08. Representing Ljungberg is CAA Sports, a division of Creative Artists Agency.

"We looked far and wide for a designated player who would represent the spirit of our team," said Sounders FC majority owner Joe Roth. "In Freddie Ljungberg, we found it. A proven international star at Arsenal and captain of the Swedish National Team, Freddie is the exciting, creative force we need and we are sure the Seattle fans are in for a great treat."

Hasselbeck unlikely for Eagles, Tatupu OK

9:37 AM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |

Matt Hasselbeck visited a doctor in LA for his back/leg issue on Monday, and said the doctor did not clear him to play this Sunday against the Eagles. According to the AP, Matt will not need surgery and continued rehab should eventually do the trick. Hasselbeck has been out since Oct. 5th. If Matt can't get it going by Sunday, expect to see Seneca behind center at the Qwest.

In other injury news, Tatupu (groin) and Kerney (shoulder) should both be okay for the Eagles game. Branch, however, continues to be bothered by his heel and likely won't play.

Willingham forced out?

4:58 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |

After listening to today's press conference, it sounds like the Huskies forced head coach Tyrone Willingham out. In case you haven't heard, Willingham says he's stepping down after the season. Athletic Director Scott Woodward will start a search for new head coach immediately. Below are the unedited interviews from today's presser. Just click on their names for the link to the video.

Tyrone Willingham & AD Scott Woodward

Quarterback Jake Locker

Quarterback Ronnie Fouch

Women's basketball coach Tia Jackson

Many names are being thrown out there like former UW assistant and current Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel, former Raider head coach Lane Kiffen, future Hawks head coach Jim Mora, Fresno State head coach Pat Hill, and Boise State head coach Chris Peterson. I just wonder why Woodward, who has said he doesn't want to make a coaching change until the end of the season, would force Willingham to step down now? And I wonder if Woodward will go off the board and bring in someone not named in the potential replacements? If nothing, Husky football fans will be talking about something else other than losing.

Seahawks @ 49ers, final thoughts

4:06 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |

It's tough to say how good of a win this game was against a team as bad as the 49ers. Still, the defense did well with Tatupu sidelined early. We'll have to wait and see how bad the injury is. Make sure and watch the Mike Holmgren show on KING/5 after the NBC Sunday Night Football game for an update direct from the coach. All in all, a win is a win. Made even better with a divisional win, and the Cards and Rams both losing. Game ball goes to Leonard Weaver. Now if the offense can get Matt back, maybe this team can get on a roll.

Seahawks @ 49ers fourth quarter game log

The fourth quarter kicks off with the 49ers moving the ball inside the five yard line. Hill throws to Hill for a Niners TD. Seahawks 27, 49ers 13.

The Seahawks get a first down on a Maurice Morris nine-yard run. On third and six, Weavers catches a pass and goes 62 yards for a TD. It's the Leonard Weaver show in the Bay Area. Seahawks 34, 49ers 13.

Seahawks @ 49ers third quarter game log

2:43 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |

The Seahawks start the third quarter with a John Carlson first down catch. After the Seahawks stall and punt, the Niners with Shaun Hill as QB nearly own the entire third quarter. Nedney hits a FG with four minutes left in the third. Seahawks 20, Niners 6.

After a nice Josh Wilson return, the Seahawks get a first down on a Julius Jones screen. Then Weaver catches a Wallace pass and turns on the burners, running for a TD. Wow, what a catch and run. Seahawks 27, Niners 6.

...

Seahawks @ 49ers second quarter game log

1:54 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |

Weaver starts the second quarter with a Seahawks first down run. Weaver gets another first down, catching a Seneca pass to the five yard line. Duckett runs it one yard for his fourth rushing TD of the season. 14 plays, 83 yards. Seahawks 13, 49ers 0.

With Tatupu out of the game with a left groin injury, the Niners move the ball well. After a Rocky Bernard sack of O'Sullivan, Nedney hits a 42-yard FG. Seahawks 13, 49ers 3.

The Seahawks go three and out. After a Ryan punt, the Niners also go three and out (Kerney applied the pressure on third down). With Sean Locklear out, the Niners are bringing pressure on the right side and the Seahawks offense look out of sync. Seneca misses a wide open Engram and the Seahawks punt. Punt, punt, punt.

The Niners end the half going for it on fourth down and Josh Wilson intercepts O'Sullivan and runs it back 76 yards for a TD. Holmgren looks ecstatic for the first time this season. Seahawks 20, 49ers 3.

Defense, Defense, Defense

1:42 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |

Clearly the Seahawks defense is up to task when it comes to forcing turnovers, but how much will they be forced to stay on the field to stop the run?

Frank Gore had to be licking his chops before the game having flashbacks to the games in 2006 when the Seattle defense was on the field forever and he spent most of forever running over them.

On the other side, we can hope that Defensive coordinator John Marshall was prepared to be on the field if the offense continues to struggle moving the ball.

Seahawks @ 49ers first quarter game log

1:07 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |

After the Seahawks force a fumble and a Niners punt, Julius Jones has a nice run. The Seahawks convert their first third down and not their second. Mare hits a 43-yard FG. Sure nice to see the Seahawks score on their first possession. Seahawks 3, 49ers 0.

On the next drive, the Seahawks give up a 53-yard pass to the Niners TE Walker. The secondary looked confused on the play. Then Gore gets 10 and a first down. O'Sullivan coughs up the ball (again) on a Peterson hit and Kerney runs it to the Seahawks 28. Nice D. The Seahawks fail to convert on third down. Mare hits a 42-yard FG. Seahawks 6, 49ers 0.

After the Seahawks force a three and out, Koren has a nice catch for a first down at midfield. Then Engram gets another at the 40. The Seahawks go for it on 4th and six and Koren makes the catch on a slant for a Seahawks first down.

From the AP: Seahawks starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will not play Sunday, Seattle coach Mike Holmgren said Friday. Holmgren told KIRO Radio that Hasselbeck will miss his third straight game when the Seahawks play at San Francisco and will have more tests Monday. The three-time Pro Bowler is rehabilitating a hyperextended right knee that is being weakened by a bulging disk in his back. Backup Seneca Wallace is ready for his second straight start against the 49ers. He has taken the first-team snaps in practice all week. Ballmer and Stern talking Sonics return

9:36 AM Fri, Oct 24, 2008 |

The PI is reporting that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and NBA commish David Stern have recently had talks about bringing the NBA back. Seatle Deputy Mayor Tim Ceis confirms that Ballmer and Stern are talking. The deal centers around a new plan to divert an existing hotel-tax from the state convention center to remodel KeyArena (and Seattle Center). Why this package may get through the legislature, from Ceis:

"...it's a city-only tax that already exists and will not be an increase...If we can get our funding package together this session, we can start to work with the Ballmer group on identifying a team for Seattle, but probably not until 2010."

What Stern had to say about the talks yesterday:

"I don't want to mislead, so I will say that we have had some contact and we're aware of what's going on. I'd rather not deal with the specifics of it at this time, but we have had some positive contact."

According to the PI, this tax is different from the stadium taxes. A 7% tax on Seattle hotel bills is currently dedicated to the convention center. The city is negotiating to divert 1/10th of that revenue to the KeyArena project. You can read more about the deal, and Ballmer's talks here. Nice timing, don't you think? In case you didn't know, the NBA season kicks off in two weeks.

Sounders FC to host open tryouts

3:52 PM Thu, Oct 23, 2008 |

From the Sounders FC:
RENTON, WASH. - Seattle Sounders FC will host open tryouts in three Washington cities during the month of November, the club announced today. The open tryouts will be filmed for a reality based television show which will be televised on BELO properties, including: KING 5, KONG 6/16 and NWCN in late January of 2009. A minimum of three finalists from each market will take part in a televised one-hour tryout in Seattle.

"Chivas USA has utilized the open tryout process very effectively," said Sounders FC Majority Owner Joe Roth. "The 2007 winner plays for Chivas USA and the U.S. Under-20 National Team. We believe similar talent exists in the Northwest." The final tryout will be broadcast on Sunday, February 1, 2009, following Super Bowl XLIII on KING 5. Viewers will have the opportunity to narrow the finalists to three. A distinguished panel of judges will determine the winner. The winner will be awarded a spot on the 2009 Sounders FC roster.

"Super Bowl Sunday on KING 5 will be truly super," said BELO President and General Manager Ray Heacox. "First the biggest game in sports, then on the same night, the biggest prize ever awarded in Northwest sports, a chance for some talented player to win a spot on the Sounders FC on TV."

Thursday practice: No Hasselbeck, no Branch

3:39 PM Thu, Oct 23, 2008 |

The latest from Seahawks practice isn't great. Neither Matt Hasselbeck or Deion Branch practiced today. Good luck seeing either of them on Sunday against the 49ers. On the bright side, Seneca is getting more reps with the first stringers. Floyd Womack, who left practice yesterday with an illness, also did not practice. Willis and Wrotto worked in Womack's place. Koren Robinson practiced, but was limited. On defense, both DD Lewis and Tatupu shared time at middle linebacker. Tatupu should be fine on Sunday.

More on new M's GM

1:17 PM Wed, Oct 22, 2008 |

As you've already seen in Justin's Blog below, the M's hired Jack Zduriencik as their new general manager. Keep putting you comments in Justin's Blog. I thought I'd just pass along the M's official press release. It has Zduriencik's biography. It's after the jump, enjoy.

Zduriencik as M's new GM: Right choice?

11:24 AM Wed, Oct 22, 2008 |

You've probably heard the news that the Mariners selected Jack Zduriencik as the team's new GM. What do you think? Does Zduriencik inspire confidence? Can the Milwaukee Brewers exec turn the M's around? Zduriencik won out over Kim Ng (my favorite), Tony LaCava and Jerry DiPoto. Sure, Zduriencik has the most experience and is supposed to be a stud when it comes to picking talent. But can he get the job done? We'll see.

Frustrated, Julius Jones calls out Holmgren

9:34 AM Wed, Oct 22, 2008 |

There was talk of this after the Tampa Bay loss, and now the Tribnet has an article about Seahawks venting frustration towards the coaching staff for the recent losing streak. Specifically, Julius Jones calling Mike Holmgren out during the Bucs game. He was reportedly ranting so loudly, Jones had to be physically restrained by Red Bryant (how big a deal this was, I don't know). The RB was not in the locker room yesterday, and the TNT's request for an interview went nowhere.

Holmgren admitted yesterday that he knew of some frustration boiling over on the sidelines, and was going to address to the players how to deal with a 1-5 record and anemic offensive football. The 12th Man knew this was going to happen. We just didn't know who would start to talk the talk. I don't know if you can blame Jones for feeling frustrated. After being third in the league in rushing, his carries have diminished faster than a Seahawks third down conversion. You can read the entire column here.

Seahawks open as 5 point underdogs to SF

10:22 AM Tue, Oct 21, 2008 |

Is denial in play here? Are the Seahawks really this bad? I mean, 32nd in the NFL in passing? Whatever the 12th Man believes, the Seahawks open as 5-point underdogs in Sunday's game against Singletary's 49ers. I'll leave you with some of Holmgren's better quotes from yesterday's press conference, comparing these Seahawks to his first high school team:

"It reminds me of when I first started coaching at Sacred Heart High School, you know? We were kind of overmatched all the time, playing against better players for a while...They gave you everything they had. And you loved them for it. But it was going to be tough each week...That's a little bit of an exaggeration, but that's the last time, it really is the last time. I can't think in professional football. It's different."

126.8 yards passing per game will get quotes like that.

Niners drop the ax, fire Nolan

6:18 PM Mon, Oct 20, 2008 |

NFL.com is reporting that the 49ers have fired embattled coach Mike Nolan. Assistant head coach Mike Singletary will take over in the interim. Nolan went 18-37 since coaching the 49ers. A Hall of Fame LB who played for the Bears, Singletary has been coaching within the 49ers organization since 2005. Sure creates an interesting game next Sunday as the 1-5 Seahawks travel to the Bay Area to take on the 2-5 Niners.

Hasselbeck day-to-day

3:30 PM Mon, Oct 20, 2008 |

Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren held his usual Monday presser today. He doesn't really know if quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will be back for next Sunday. He's listed as day-to-day. Holmgren thinks the team needs something a little more than just a return of Matt to the lineup.

Lofa Tatupu has a concussion. Doctors checked him out and it looks like he'll be back for Sunday's game against the 49ers.

Receiver Deion Branch, like Hasselbeck, is day-to-day. He's got a bum heel.

Was Holmgren's retirement announcment a mistake?

10:21 AM Mon, Oct 20, 2008 |

It's a question that seems to linger around the Seahawks recent and mounting losses. Was Mike Holmgren's early retirement announcement a mistake? Even with the scope of pro players always playing to win, is having the next head coach in the wings enough to create more than just an unspoken distraction?

Following Mike's announcement at the end of last season, many coaches were lost, especially on the offense side of the ball. Hasselbeck's QB guru, Zorn, and other coaches took off for greener pastures. So many new players/coaches were brought into the Seahawks offense, the 12th Man should have seen this collapse coming. The Seahawks aren't simply working in new WRs. They're working in a new TE, a new RB, a new HB, a new LG, and a new line coach. And a new QB coach. Coaches and players who know the program could be shaken up as soon as next season (maybe sooner).

So that's the question. Instead of delicately handling the changing of the guard, is this "soft transition" from head coach to head coach more trouble than anything else? Is this never-before-seen coach-in-waiting enough to blame for leaving the shocked Seahawks staring 1-5 in the face?

Seahawks fall to 1-5. Worst in the West.

8:14 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |

Only the Detroit Lions are lower. So, the question lingers. What should this franchise do next? Can this be turned around next year? Maybe with a new secondary, a new DT and a WR or two taller than 5'9". And one has to ask: Just how bad is Matt's back?

Seahawks @ Bucs, fourth quarter game log

7:35 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |

Can the Seahawks offense do anything? Three first downs? The Bucs own time-of-possession 2:1. The defense is simply pooped. Bucs move down the field easily and get a 27-yard FG. Seahawks 3, Tampa Bay 20.

With 1:55 left, Wallace to Carslon. Finally, the Seahawks get into the end zone. Seahawks 10, Tampa Bay 20.

Onside kick recovered by the Bucs. Game over. Season over?

Seahawks @ Bucs, third quarter game log

6:57 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |

Anyone hitting the sauce yet? Sheesh. The Seahawks at least force a three-and-out by the Bucs. After the punt, the Seahawks finally get a first down. After stalling in the red zone, the Seahawks are on the board with a short FG. Seahawks 3, Bucs 17.

After the Bucs punt again, Morris runs for 45 yards. Nice. Next? The Seahawks miss a 38 yard FG. PAINFUL. All caps, indeed.

...

Seahawks @ Bucs, second quarter game log

5:59 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |

The second quarter starts off with the Bucs fumbling after a huge hit on Ike Hilliard by Hill and Tatupu in the red zone. A challenge by Holmgren ends with the Seahawks getting the ball on the turnover. Finally, the Seahawks get a break.

But the break is short as another Wahle holding penalty kills a Seahawks drive. Once again, the Seahawks have to punt. Now there's word that Tatupu has a concussion and is out. The Bucs move the ball to the one yard line and Graham gets the TD. Seahawks 0, Bucs 14.

On the next series, Seneca is intercepted. That pass had bad written all over it. This offense is harder to watch than the Kitna/Watters days. The Bucs hit a 27-yard FG. Seahawks 0, Bucs 17.

After a great return, Seneca fumbles the snap. Bucs ball. This is painful. Primetime painful. National TV painful.

...

Seahawks @ Bucs, first quarter game log

5:25 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |

Well, the Seahawks converted their first third down as Holmgren starts off with three straight passes. They can't convert their second third down and after a Seahawks punt, Bryant beats Jennings for a Garcia TD pass. Yet another huge play given up by the Seahawks defense. Seahawks 0, Bucs 7.

The Seahawks fail to convert on third and two and punt after the team's first three-and-out. The Seahawks force a Bucs punt and then...fail to get a first down. After their second three-and-out, the Seahawks punt once more.

Seahawks vs. Bucs pregame notes

3:42 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |

It's an hour before gametime. It's shorts weather here in Tampa, but the wind is blowing at a pretty good clip from north to south. The Bucs website proclaims Raymond James Stadium as "The Crown Jewel of the NFL." I think that's a bit much, but you have to love the 103-foot-long ship known as "Buccaneer Cove" that sits above the north end zone.

In the picture below, you'll notice the number 40 in the end zone seats. That's the number of longtime Buc, Mike Alstott, who retired after 12 seasons. One of the most popular Bucs ever, Alstott will be honored at halftime.

Seahawks add Herring to active roster

From the team:
The Seattle Seahawks have activated linebacker Will Herring to the 53-man active roster, the team announced this morning. To make room on the roster, Seattle waived/injured wide receiver Billy McMullen. Herring spent the first seven weeks on the team's physically unable to perform list. McMullen played in four games and had seven receptions for 124 yards. He originally signed with the Seahawks on September 10 as a free agent.

Greek team offers Kobe $83M, tax-free

2:48 PM Thu, Oct 16, 2008 |

Add another wrinkle to the slew of college and high school athletes heading to play in Europe. Reports have a team in Greece offering Kobe Bryant $83-million tax-free, a villa in the Mediterranean Sea, a private boat for Kobe, and a full-service staff. The offer was first reported on the Italian basketball site basketcentral.it. You can read more on the offer on Zagsblog.com. The reported deal isn't for this season, so Lakers fans can relax. The team? The Olympiacos. While the offer may create a few "what the?", the team is serious. They recently made ex-NBA star Josh Childress the highest-paid basketball player in the world outside of the NBA, with a three-year $20M contract.

Can Seahawks win even with Seneca at QB?

9:41 AM Thu, Oct 16, 2008 |

Call me crazy, but I have a good feeling about the Seahawks chances in Tampa Bay with Seneca behind center. First, it's an East Coast night game which takes away the time zone advantage. Second, Seneca was 2-2 in 2006 when he started. He knows this offense. He understands Holmgren's West Coast hybrid. And the defense is going to come out hungry.

But it's going to take more than the QB. Last week, the defense played very well for nearly three quarters and then just ran out of gas. This defense is designed for speed and to play with a lead. Can they stop the team with the NFL's 11th ranked offense? Right now the Bucs are 6th in the league in rushing and 16th in passing. So far, the Seahawks have done pretty well against the run.

The Seahawks have a good shot as any with a healthy Seneca. But if Charlie has steps in, well, I don't know if the 12th Man has seen anything from Frye that thinks he can lead the team against Tampa Bay's 13th ranked defense. Or simply get enough third down conversions to keep the Seahawks D rested.

Bumpus is back

3:52 PM Wed, Oct 15, 2008 |

Hasselbeck officially out

2:07 PM Wed, Oct 15, 2008 |

Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren says Matt Hasselbeck will not play on Sunday. Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace will start if his calf is healthy. Wallace will run with the first team in practice this week. Holmgren says they only have one game plan ready for the Bucs. That means, as of right now, the team's offensive game plan centers on Seneca starting at quarterback. Holmgren believes the optimists on the team hope Hasselbeck will be back in time for San Francisco game (that's the next game after the Bucs).

The head coach calls receiver Deion Branch as day-to-day and is planning on his return for Sunday. Koren Robinson won't practice today, but the team anticipates he'll play against Tampa Bay.

Holmgren also wished nothing but the best for Bucs tight end Jerramy Stevens. He's happy that Shaun Alexander found work, too.

UW QB Locker out for the season?

The Huskies may be without quarterback Jake Locker for the season. The Times' Bob Condotta reports that offensive coordinator Tim Lappano thinks Locker could be done. Doctors will take a closer look at Locker's thumb tomorrow.

"Is he going to play this year before the season is over? Who knows,'' Lappano said. "It's highly unlikely I would guess. But tomorrow we'll know more when they find out a little bit more about it.'' -Seattle Times website

It appears Ronnie Fouch will be playing the rest of the way. For someone who competes as hard as Locker, you gotta feel for him.

Seahawks sign Forsett, cut Bumpus

5:11 PM Tue, Oct 14, 2008 |

And the Redskins signed Shaun Alexander to backup Clinton Portis and the Dallas Cowboys traded with the Lions for Roy Williams. The Cowboys reportedly gave up a first round, third and six round pick next year, and a seventh round pick in 2010 (this sounds like Jerry Jones kind of thinking, doesn't it? No way Bill Parcells would have given up so much for Williams). Here is the press release from the Seahawks concerning Forsett and Bumpus:

Renton, Wash. - The Seattle Seahawks have released wide receiver Michael Bumpus and signed running back Justin Forsett from the practice squad to the active roster, the team announced this afternoon. Forsett was Seattle's first of two seventh-round draft picks (233rd overall) in this year's NFL Draft before being released after camp. He was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts and played in three games, returning 11 kickoffs for 248 yards with a long of 28. He was signed to Seattle's practice squad on October 9. Bumpus began the year on the practice squad until being signed to the active roster on September 13. He played in four games with five catches for 48 yards and one touchdown, and also returned seven punts for 66 yards.

Seahawks open as 10 1/2 point underdogs

9:36 AM Tue, Oct 14, 2008 |

When was the last time the Seahawks opened as such big underdogs? WSEX, BETcris and Sportsbetting all have the Tampa Bay as 10.5 point favorites over the Matt Hasselbeck-less Seahawks. Ouch.

The PI also put together a nice grouping of stats sure to depress the 12th Man. The Seahawks have opened 1-4 or worse seven times. None of those teams made the playoffs. Only one 1-4 Seahawks team turned it around and ended with a winning season. The 1979 team finished 9-7. Want worse odds? Since the NFL switched to the 16 game format in 1978, only six 1-4 team has made the playoffs. Sure would be something to see these Seahawks rally for Holmgren's last year and make that seven.

No LJ in 2012?

5:21 PM Mon, Oct 13, 2008 |

No one knows if Lauren Jackson will return to the Storm next season, but it sounds very likely she'll skip town in 2012, at least for that season. Fox Sports in Australia is reporting that LJ will focus on the Aussies Olympic effort in 2012 and probably won't play in the WNBA.

"People are kind of banding together right now. The Australian team to me means more than anything. I'm going to do whatever it takes to get back on track, and, look, we won a silver medal. It's not like we bombed out. But for me now I think something I really need to look at is not going back to the WNBA in Olympic years and, instead, focusing on our team, just being around and getting to know people, building relationships. I'll try and be more of a leader, more of a captain." - Lauren Jackson on foxsports.au

If you want to read the whole article, click here. I guess it wouldn't surprise me. She's very passionate about her country's Olympic hopes. She'll only be 31 for the London Olympics. So LJ will still have a lot of basketball ahead of her.

WSU QB Lobbestael out for the season

3:08 PM Mon, Oct 13, 2008 |

The Cougars starting quarterback Marshall Lobbestael will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL & MCL. At first they thought it was only an MCL tear, but further tests revealed the ACL tear. Typically, that type of surgery requires nine months of rehab. Lobbestael is the third WSU starting quarterback to go down to injury. Gary Rogers has a cervical spine fracture. He's done for the season Kevin Lopina broke a bone in his back. But Lopina could be back this week. Is the state of Washington cursed for sports? Between the Huskies, Cougars, Seahawks, Mariners, Sonics (gone), and Storm (LJ injury), there's been enough bad luck to make the Cubs look like lucky leprechauns.

Hasselbeck out, Seneca Wallace uncertain

2:30 PM Mon, Oct 13, 2008 |

In case you missed Holmgren's Monday press conference, the coach just announced that Matt will not play on Sunday. Seneca may, if the second-stringer can practice this week. If not, then Tampa Bay's defense gets to pin their ears back before Charlie Frye. Holmgren also said Branch should be back for this Sunday's game.

Re: Matt: The Seahawks flew Hasselbeck down to a doctor in Los Angeles last evening. The specialist thinks the knee issue is tied to the QB's back problems from the preseason (more specifically tied to a disc). Matt now has a series of tests he has to pass before he will be cleared to play.

Toughness and tears at Canucks home opener

Hockey is supposed to be a sport for tough guys. Make it to the NHL level and you can expect bone-crunching hits, lightning quick speed and spectacular goals. But Friday night, toughness gave way to tears at GM Place in Vancouver, as the Canucks and their fans remembered a promising career cut tragically short. On a day when Romo is reportedly out four weeks with a broken finger, Holmgren says Matt Hasselbeck's gimpy knee will require more tests and the Seahawks QB could miss the Tampa Bay game. Ouch. Holmgren said he is turning his sights on getting Seneca healthy and ready to play. Stay tuned, the coach said he'd likely have more information on Matt's condition at today's news conference. Not the best news for Seahawks fans who still think the team can scrape their way out of the 1-4 NFC West cellar.

Well, well, well. Anyone just watch the Arizona Cardinals beat the Cowboys in OT? And you still think the Seahawks-that-Ruskell-built can get it going in time to reach the playoffs? Because we all know the NFC West will likely only field one post-season team.

So if you could play Seahawks GM, coach, president, whatever, what would you do to fix this broken Seahawks team? A new, huge, run stopping defensive tackle or two? A QB of the future, so when Matt and Seneca go out at least the 12th Man gets to see the future of the franchise? What needs to happen for the Seahawks to get pointed in the right direction?

Payton bringing basketball back to Seattle?

Sonics legend Gary Payton raised the 12th Man Flag today. He also raised the hopes of basketball fans. GP thinks Seattle will get an NBA team by 2011. According the Seattle Times, Payton is recruiting some former players to help bring the Sonics (not the OKC Thunder) back. I'm guessing it'll have to be another team relocating to Seattle. Commish David Stern has said they don't plan to expand in the U.S. With the rumors of the Bobcats leaving Charlotte, it could happen sooner than 2011. Plus, the New Orleans Hornets are struggling to keep their fan base after Hurricane Katrina and Rita.

Packers v. Hawks 4th quarter log

3:43 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |

- Packers keep driving the ball. They score on a 1-yard TD catch by Kuhn. Packers lead, 24-10.
- Hawks ball. Third play and Frye throws an interception. Ouch! You wonder how different this game would have been with Hasselbeck in there.
- Packers ball. Rogers gets sacked by 3 or 4 Seahawks. They give Brian Russell credit for the sack. Maybe it's to make him feel better for allowing some guy named Kuhn to score a touchdown on him. Crosby kicks a 51 yard FG, Packers lead, 27-10.
- Hawks ball. Frye isn't doing much. He gets sacked and four plays later he throws an interception.
- Packers ball. Seattle forces them into a 3 and out.
- Hawks ball. This is probably their best drive of the game. Frye scrambles for a 27 yard gain. Engram and Woodson end up scuffling on the play. Bobby must be frustrated. The Packers are called for roughing the passer. Talk about adding insult to injury. There's no real need for them to hit Frye today. Frye ends up throwing a 5 yard TD to Keary Colbert. I think that's his 1st TD as a Seahawk. Packers lead, 27-17.
- Seattle tries an onside kick. Green Bay recovers and runs out the clock. They win, 27-17. Don't forget to watch the Mike Holmgren Show after NBC Football on NBC. You can hear what head coach Mike Holmgren thinks went wrong.

Packers v. Hawks 3rd quarter log

2:39 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |

The Seahawks are content to run the ball. It looks like they want Frye to manage the game. He's only thrown 6 passes. Seattle has ran the ball 16 times for 58 yards. On defense, the Hawks have done a good job keeping Ryan Grant in check (14 carries for 49 yards). But they've got put more pressure on Rogers and test his sore shoulder.

- Packers ball. They go 3 and out. Rogers looks bad on his first two passes of the half.
- Seahawks ball. Julius Jones rips off a 51-yard run, but it's called back. Guard Mike Wahle is called for holding. Frye throws to Bobby Engram. It's a little high and goes off Engram's fingers for an incomplete pass. Seattle goes 3 and out.
- Packers ball. Green Bay can't do much. They run Grant three times for three total yards. The Hawks are tackling much better than they did last week. The Pack has to punt.
- Seahawks ball. They go 3 and out. Strangely, they passed it all three times. I guess it's hard for head coach Mike Holmgren to change his stripes.
- Packers ball. Greg Jennings catches a 45 yard bomb for six. He beat Marcus Trufant. It looked like the Hawks ran a safety blitz, so Tru was all by himself. Russell nearly got to Rogers on the blitz.
- Hawks ball. Frye gets sacked by Kampman. Sean Locklear gets beat for the second time today.
- Packers ball. Rogers keeps Green Bay going with his legs. He avoided a sack by Kerney and completed a 14 yard pass. Then scrambles away and picks up 16 yards. End of the 3rd quarter, Packers lead, 17-10.

...

Packers v. Hawks 2nd quarter log

1:55 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |

It looks like Seattle is content to run the ball more than they pass. Julius Jones looked good in the first quarter. For some reason, the Packers got away from running Ryan Grant. We'll see if they get back to it in the 2nd quarter.

- Seahawks still have the ball. Frye gets sacked. Sean Locklear gets beat. Frye also threw a horrible pass to a wide open Engram. I can understand why the Hawks will run the ball a lot more than normal. Olindo Mare nails a 50-yard FG. Game tied, 3-3.
- Packers ball. J-Pete sacks Rogers and forces a fumble. Rocky Bernard recovers. Seahawks ball. I think that was Seattle's first sack in a couple games.
- Hawks ball. On 4th and 1, T.J. Duckett picks up the first down. Three plays later Frye throws his first TD as a Seahawk to John Carlson. It's Carlson's first TD in the NFL.
- Packers ball. Patrick Kerney layed a hit on Rogers as he released the ball. I'm surprised Rogers got up and looks all right. Packers are driving. We've hit the 2-minute warning. On 2nd and goal, Green Bay runs a QB sneak. The refs rule Rogers was stopped. Now they've sent it upstairs to a booth review. The refs overturned the call and calls it a touchdown. How is that possible? The refs blew the play dead, then Rogers reaches over the goal line. That just doesn't sound right. It's tied, 10-10.
- Hawks ball. They're letting the clock run out. It's halftime, all tied at 10.

Packers v. Hawks 1st quarter log

1:29 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |

As you all know by now, Matt Hasselbeck won't play today. Sonics legend Gary Payton raised the 12th Man Flag.

- Seattle goes 3 and out on their 1st possession
- Packers ball. Deion Grant sprains his knee on the first play. His return is questionable. Green Bay runs on the Hawks. Ryan Grant does the damage with 4 carries and 26 yards. But Seattle forces them to punt.
- Seahawks go 3 and out again. All three plays were running plays.
- Packers ball. FOX showed a montage of Aaron Rogers warming up before the game. He looks like his shoulder is causing him pain. It sounds like the Hawks need to put some pressure on him. Their rookie Jordy Nelson looks good. He's big and has sealed the Hawks away from the ball. Green Bay settles for 29 yd FG. Packers lead, 3-0
- Josh Wilson returns the kickoff. He puts his head down and knocks over the kicker. A nice return by Wilson. Koren Robinson makes a spectacular catch for 19 yards. End of the first quarter, Packers lead, 3-0

Seahawks gameday wx forecast

10:17 AM Sat, Oct 11, 2008 |

"Perfect fall football weather will be in place in time for Sunday's kickoff at Qwest Field. As the Seahawks get set to host the Pack, cool crisp autumn sun will be shining over the Seattle skyline. Temperatures will be in the upper 50s to near 60 at game-time. However, by late in the afternoon, those readings will drop back into the low 50s, and with a light north wind blowing, it will feel even cooler. Definitely 'dress in layers' to prepare for the cooling conditions set to come as the game wraps up." - Shannon O'Donnell, KING/5 Meteorologist

Can the Seahawks win with Frye at QB?

2:41 PM Fri, Oct 10, 2008 |

You've likely heard the news that Charlie Frye may start on Sunday after Matt Hasselbeck spent another practice playing spectator in a green Seahawks cap. With Seneca still hurting, that means Charlie Frye could be the starting QB against GB. Can the Seahawks win with ex-Browns starting QB Frye?

Kharma for OKC owner McClendon?

11:21 PM Thu, Oct 09, 2008 |

Supersonicsoul.com has posted a blog. It seems like OKC part-owner Aubrey McClendon had a tough day, or past few months, with his company Chesapeake Energy. According to the blog, Chesapeake's stock tanked from a high in July of 70.24 to today's 17.71.

That's a loss of $52/share, which, if you have 34,000,000 shares like some people do, in the last three months your net worth has declined by the sum total of $1,768,000,000. -- supersonicsoul.com

Here's the link to whole article. Is it petty for me to wish this to be true? Nearly losing 2 billion dollars? If it's wrong of me, then I don't wnat to be right.

Forbes top 10 franchises likely to move

4:49 PM Thu, Oct 09, 2008 |

Attention Mayor Greg Nickels and your cronies. Here's a list of the top 10 pro teams likekly to move. This comes from fanhouse.com via forbes.com. Forbes made a list. There are 3 NHL teams and 2 NBA teams.

-- Florida Marlins
-- Tampa Bay Rays
-- Buffalo Bills
-- Minnesota Vikings
-- San Francisco 49ers
-- New York Islanders
-- Phoenix Coyotes
-- Nashville Predators
-- New Orleans Hornets
-- Charlotte Bobcats

It saddens me to see my Vikings on the list, but I digress. As much as I would hate to see what's happened to the city of Seattle and its surrounding community, they (Nickels and company) should get Steve Balmer on the line and e-mail him the Forbes list. The NBA season (and NHL season) is about to start and I already feel the pangs in my stomach of not having an NBA franchise in town. I seriously wouldn't feel bad if the Bobcats moved. That would mean they've tried twice in the last 20 years. Or If the Coyotes and Predators wanted to head north, that's fine with me too. Not only do all NHL teams belong in the upper half of the U.S. and Canada, but I've never really heard any team complain about stadium issues much.

Mariners do their part

3:49 PM Thu, Oct 09, 2008 |

Who says athletes don't do their part? The Mariners sent over a press release announcing how much money they've raised for northwest charities. The M's raised over a million dollars. They've nearly collected 10 million over the last nine years. Kind of makes you wonder about all those people who said let the Sonics leave...they don't add anything to the community. Well I don't have the numbers in front of me of what the Sonics added, but you have one Seattle team (the M's) pouring a million to the needy. Enough of my mini-rant. The official press release is after the jump. You can see what organization got what.

Seahawks grab Forsett, QB Lulay

2:07 PM Thu, Oct 09, 2008 |

Well, fan favorite RB Justin Forsett is again a Seahawk. The Seahawks announced today they released RB Matt Lawrence and WR Trent Shelton and replaced them on the practice squad with RB Justin Forsett and QB Travis Lulay. Forsett was drafted 233rd overall by the Hawks, before being released after camp. He was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts and played three games, returning 11 kickoffs for 248 yards with a long of 28. Lulay signed with Seattle as an undrafted free agent on May 1, 2006 but was released and did not play in 2007. He was signed by the Saints in May but was released in July.

Jim Mora on the NFL's 27th ranked defense

10:06 AM Thu, Oct 09, 2008 |

Giving up seven passing TDs and only having one interception usually creates some changes in the secondary. This week, Kelly Jennings has been replaced in the starting defense by Josh Wilson. Injuries nonwithstanding, changes need to be made: Right now the Seahawks are 27th in the NFL in total defense. They allow six yards per pass. Only KC, Denver, St Louis, and Detroit give up more. Here's what Mora had to say yesterday about the changes:

"Number one, we want to get Josh more reps because he's worthy of more reps. Number two, Kelly had a mild concussion and maybe a little bit of a stinger Sunday on the seventh play and didn't come back then. And in the second game he broke the rib, so he's a little beat up. It's a long season. We've got 12 games to go. So we want to make sure we're prudent in how much we put him out there and expose him when he's not 100 percent."

Neither is a Seahawks defense that returned 11 starters. In four games the Hawks have given up 17 pass plays of plus-20 yards. And who's coming to town this weekend? The Packers. The team that started the D's downward spiral. Whether a wounded Tatupu, Trufant and a replacement in the secondary can enact revenge, the 12th Man will have to wait and see. One bright gem: GB is only 23rd in the NFL in rushing.

Changes on defense

2:30 PM Wed, Oct 08, 2008 |

KING 5's Chris Egan is watching Seahawks practice. He tells me that Leroy Hill is not running with the 1st team defense. He's resting a sore knee. D.D. Lewis is filling in for now. It sounds like Hill should be available to start on Sunday. Also, Josh Wilson has taken Kelly Jennings spot with the first teamers. But that could be more about Jennings' concussion than anything else.

In case you didn't see the Mike Holmgren press conference, which can be seen every Monday at 2pm and Wednesday at noon on Northwest Cable News (yes, I've gotta plug it), the coach talked about making changes on the team. He hopes the players don't take it personal, they've just gotta get the best group out on the field.

On the offensive side, Koren Robinson is getting reps with the 1st string. But generally they rotate the receivers through a lot. It's probably a bigger deal that K-Rob seems healthy to run with the first team.

More on Taylor being cut

2:14 PM Wed, Oct 08, 2008 |

Today, during the press conference, Hawks head coach Mike Holmgren talked a little in-depth about cutting Courtney Taylor. He likes him and had a long talk with Taylor. Holmgren thinks he needs just a little more seasoning. Seattle drafted him in the 6th round in 2007.

Holmgren says the team nearly pulled the trigger on the move (cutting Taylor and signing Jordan Kent from the practice squad) last week. But they thought Deion Branch would give them the much needed speed on offense. Well Branch is out indefinitely with a bruised heel. I'm guessing this move is a little more telling of Branch's injury. I'd suspect he'll miss next Sunday's game. Holmgren thinks Kent gives the team speed, enthusiasm, and sometimes he zigs when he should of zagged, but he'll be able to help on special teams.

UPDATE: Taylor clears waivers and resigns with the Seahawks. According to Frank Hughes with the TNT, other teams were interested in Taylor, but he didn't want to sign with another team's practice squad. He felt he was in a good situation with the Seahawks.

Hasselbeck not practicing

2:07 PM Wed, Oct 08, 2008 |

Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren says Matt Hasselbeck won't practice today. We don't expect to see Seneca Wallace take any snaps either. Holmgren says his sore calf has acted up. Charlie Frye will work with the first unit. Holmgren doesn't seem too concerned if Hasselbeck can't practice all week long. If that happens and Matt tells coach he can play on Sunday, he'll welcome him with open arms. He says Hasselbeck has to play.

Mora or Zorn? Which Jim would you prefer?

9:24 AM Wed, Oct 08, 2008 |

It's an argument in hindsight and one that's easy to make: Doesn't it just make sense to have Mora as the Huskies coach and Zorn as the Seahawks'? The Seahawks secondary, which Mora coaches, is floundering. Zorn and the Redskins are rolling. And we all know about the last four years at Montlake. Just think about the energy Mora would infuse at the UW.

Consider the transformation of Skins QB Jason Campbell, thanks to Steve Kelley at the Seattle Times. Since Zorn took over as head coach of the Redskins, Campbell's rating is 96.7. After tossing 17 INTs in the first 20 games of his career, Campbell doesn't have any this season. And Matt? Last season Hasselbeck threw 27 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions with a rating of 91.4. Since losing his QB coach? Two TDs, four INT and a rating of 57.7.

The argument makes for a great newspaper column. But so far, no one has a magical rewind button. Yet who would the 12th Man choose to control the Seahawks sidelines? Zorn? Or Mora?

Cougars find a quarterback

3:47 PM Tue, Oct 07, 2008 |

Wazzu held a quarterback tryout on Monday. Head coach Paul Wulff had 29 current students attempt to make the team. With all the injuries at the position, Wulff needed a scout team QB. He whittled it down to four on Monday night. Today, Wulff picked one. It's former Woodinville high school QB Peter Roberts. The Cougars sent out a press release. It's below:

Quarterback Peter Roberts Joins Cougar Football Team

PULLMAN, Wash. - Following a tryout Monday afternoon at Rogers Field, Washington State University Head Coach Paul Wulff announced Tuesday that freshman quarterback Peter Roberts has been added to the Cougar football team.

"He's a very smart kid," Wulff said. "All we're asking him to do is help our scout team and help our defense. He's got some athletic ability, he's got enough arm and he's played quarterback. I think he can help us."

Roberts, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound Woodinville, Wash., native, was a three-year letterwinner in football at Woodinville High School, earning second-team All-KingCo honors as a senior. Roberts completed 128 of 230 passes for 1,571 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions as a senior. As a junior Roberts was honorable mention All-KingCo after completing 96 of 207 passes for 1,371 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Seahawks 2.5-point favorites over GB

9:43 AM Tue, Oct 07, 2008 |

Depending on who you ask, mind you. Some agencies have the Seahawks only favored by two points at the Qwest. Glancing across the board, WSEX (-2.5) Bodog (-3) BetCris (-2) Betus (-2) and Sportsbetting (-2.5) are all giving the Seahawks a slight margin over the 2-3 Packers. The Accuscore engine actually has the Packers winning as a 56% favorite -- to a team that just lost at Lambeau Field to the 3-2 Atlanta Falcons. Ouch. For a quick glance at points for (PF) and points against (PA) on the season, Seattle has 83 PF and 124 PA. GB has 133 PF and 128 PA. The Seahawks need to find a way to keep the defense off the field and score. Time for the 12th Man to get the vocal cords tuned up.

Puyallup's Moore on the Golf Channel

8:30 PM Mon, Oct 06, 2008 |

I just received an e-mail about an appearance by Puyullap's Ryan Moore on the Golf Channel. He's going to featured on Inside the PGA Tour. Check out the press release below.

Pacific Northwest PGA Tour professional Ryan Moore will be the centerpiece of the Golf Channel's Inside the PGA Tour, which will air Tueday at 3:30 p.m.
Moore, a Puyallup native, was followed by PGA Tour Production cameras for several days while he was in town a few weeks ago for his BMW Northwest Charity Skins Game, featuring Bubba Watson, Aaron Baddeley and Ben Crane. Baddeley won the second annual event for the second straight time.
The show will air originally Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and then again Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. on the Golf Channel. The Ryan Moore Foundation has donated nearly $100,000 to charity over the past two years as a result of the BMW Northwest Skins game.

Branch out with bruised heel, Hasselbeck OK

That's out of Renton this afternoon. The often-sidelined wide receiver will remain out, indefinitely. Still begs the question if Deion Branch is a bust. Jennings, who suffered a concussion in the Giants game, will undergo more tests but should be okay.

Ryan Leaf movie?

1:58 PM Mon, Oct 06, 2008 |

Can you believe it? There's an actual movie about former Cougars QB Ryan Leaf. Deadspin.com had an article about it. If you want to see the NFL Network's interview with the director/writer/actor of the movie, click here. The official title of the movie is call "Leaf: The Movie". Here's the film's myspace page. It was released this year. Apparently, the director wants to air it in Seattle at some point and time, but there are no plans as of yet. I can't believe it's a very positive flick. It sounds like he's focusing on Leaf's years in San Diego. By the way, the docudrama won an Accolade Award-honorable mention.

UPDATE: I just talked to the director/writer/actor Tim Carr. He says he's in talks with the Seattle International Film Festival to show the movie. Plus, he's talking to a few other outlets in mind to get his film screened. Carr wants to show it for free for all the fans. So, who knows, "Leaf: The Movie" maybe coming to Seattle soon.

Why are the Seahawks 1-3?

9:51 AM Mon, Oct 06, 2008 |

I can't say for certain why the once proud Seahawks are so woeful outside of Qwest Field. 28th in the league in passing yards? Understandable. 29th in the NFL in points given up? Yesterday was worse than watching the Seahawks defense from the Tom Flores era. What does secondary coach/assistant head coach/next head coach Jim Mora think? Mora was on the bus before reporters could get an answer. Not a great sign. Let's let local sports writers Art Thiel, Steve Kelley and Dave Boling take a stab:

"A creation largely of club president Tim Ruskell, who favors the overlooked and undersized, the defense may be the smallest in the NFL. Compensation was supposed to come in the form of speed and quickness, and it's happened sometimes. Not Sunday." - Art Thiel @ the PI

"There may not be answers. A quarter of the way through the season, the Hawks don't look like they can stop anybody. They can't force momentum-changing turnovers and they are too small to stop the pounding from big running backs like the Giants' Brandon Jacobs...The Seahawks' safeties were late covering. The cornerbacks were filleted. The line couldn't pull down Jacobs, or his backups Derrick Ward or Ahmad Bradshaw."- Steve Kelley @ the Times:
"These linebackers are high-priced team leaders, but they're built for speed, not for bringing down guys like Jacobs. The secondary again looked lost at times, a chronic issue this season. At the core of it, it's coach Jim Mora's job to find solutions, and it's not happening. We may wonder how soon it will be before bloggers start calling for Mora to be fired as the next head coach before he even takes over the team."- Dave Boling @ the TNT:

Anyway it's looked at, yesterday's loss was a serious message. The question is, can this broken Seahawks defense be fixed in time to save the season? And by the way, in Flores three seasons as head coach he never lost by such a large margin of defeat. And that's including the 1992 season, when the Seahawks went 2-14.

Seahawks v. Giants = Ouch

11:48 AM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |

Manning's day is done as is Matt Hasselbeck's. Branch got hurt early on and never returned. Positives: Engram looked good. Hasselbeck's return from that early knee injury was inspiring. Negatives: too many to list. Can the Seahawks stop the run when Bernard is taking a breather? Can the secondary stop anyone?

The big question now: Can the Seahawks come back and win the NFC West? Seattle moves to 1-3 with Green Bay coming to the Qwest next Sunday (right now GB is tied 17-17 with Atlanta in the fourth. Aaron Rodgers has two TDs, no INT and 235 yards). Later today, Buffalo plays in Arizona (2-2) and New England plays in San Francisco (2-2).

Halftime: Seahawks stomped by Giants

11:18 AM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |

Maybe Paul Silvi wasn't the only one to hit Times Square last night. Five possessions, five Giants scoring drives. NY is averaging over 10 yards per play. Per. Play. The Seahawks defense isn't. Their 342 first-half yards allowed is the most by any team in the NFL this season. Jennings is out with a concussion, FYI. Leave any rants below. Seahawks 6, Giants 27.

Seahawks @ Giants game log, second quarter

10:41 AM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |

The second quarter starts not much different than the first, with the Giants scoring. The only thing that stopped the Giants was Manning's first incompletion. Seahawks 3, Giants 17.

The Seahawks go three and out again, and then Ryans kicks a 32-yard punt. Ouch. Starting to feel like the Giants are going to score on every possession.

The Seahawks cannot stop the Giants. So many missed tackles. The pass defense is being picked apart by Manning. It's becoming embarrassing. Jacobs gets in again. Seahawks 3, Giants 24.

Another three and out for the Seahawks.

...

Seahawks @ Giants game log, first quarter

10:06 AM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |

Well, the Seahawks got off to a fast start with a nice catch by Deion. But a few plays later, Matt Hasselbeck gets hit after releasing the ball and is on the turf clutching his knee.

Looks like Matt overextended his knee. If you missed the hit, he was hit high and low at the same time. The one player who matters the most is now on the sidelines, being checked out by staff. He was in considerable pain.

After a 44-yard Brandon Jacobs run, Jennings gets beat by Hixon and gives up a long touchdown pass. Looks like the Giants have been watching film of other teams picking on Jennings. Seahawks 0, Giants 7. Matt is up on the sidelines.

Matt's back...whew. Engram gets his first catch. After a Giants personal foul and some great blocking by the O-line, Seahawks get into the redzone but settle for a FG. Deion tweaked his knee on missed catch and looks gimpy. Seahawks 3, Giants 7.

The best way to describe the Seahawks defense? Porous. Giants run, pass, move down the field at will. First and goal and Jacobs runs it in. Seahawks 3, Giants 14.

Three and out for the Seahawks. Giants first play? A 41-yard pass to Hixon. Ouch. The Seahawks secondary look terrible. Quarter ends with the Giants in the red zone. Again.

Seahawks in New York

9:29 PM Sat, Oct 04, 2008 |

The Seahawks arrived on the East Coast on Friday to get acclimated to the time difference. On Saturday, they had their walkthrough, making final preparations for tomorrow's game against the Giants. The team did get some free time in the afternoon. Some players took advantage of the time to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. We'll have a preview from New York on KING 5 News at 10 and 11.

We also got a glimpse of the Saturday Night Live rehearsal. Tune in for the show open. Tina Fey returns as Governor Palin.

Seahawks and 10 a.m. games

4:21 PM Thu, Oct 02, 2008 |

To answer Trevor, I glanced at the 10 a.m. away games for the Seahawks for 2006-present. Here is what I found concerning wins and losses:

2008 0-1 (BUF)
2007 0-5 (PIT, CLE, CAR, ATL,*GB)
2006 1-3 (DET, KC. *CHI)
(*playoff losses)

The one win came against Tampa to end the '06 season. The loss to Atlanta in '07 was a throwaway as well. Which, if my numbers are correct, put the Seahawks as 1-9 for 10 a.m. games since the 2005 season.

Do NFL teams experience jetlag?

9:35 AM Thu, Oct 02, 2008 |

I've been thinking about that question as the Giants game nears. Road game + bye-week usually = loss for the Seahawks. Is it a mind game, like Holmgren expressed yesterday? Or is it jetlag? The Giants are just as bad coming off the bye, so I'll take that part out of the equation and simply look at how East and West Coast NFL teams are when they play on the opposite side of the country.

Let's take a look and see if the 12th Man gets an unseen advantage when the Giants or Buccanners or Redskins come to pacific standard time. Or if the Seahawks, Chargers or Niners fair as badly when they play in the eastern time zone. I'll exclude the Raiders because of Al Davis and look solely at the 2007 season. I'm using the NFL.com as source material.

West Coast teams first (I'll mark playoff games with a *). Last season the Chargers were 1-3, only winning againt the *Colts when headed to the east (NE, JAC, *NE). The Niners went 0-5 (PIT, NYG, ATL, CAR, CLE) and the Seahawks were nearly as bad, going 1-5 and winning only at Philadephia (PIT, CLE, CAR, ATL, *GB).

For the East Coast teams, a large part of the problem is the fact there are only four pacific standard teams (some eastern teams never even leave their time zone). So I'll bump it up to all the eastern teams that came west to find a more comparable win/loss percentage. Coming this way in 2007 the Bucs went 0-2 (SEA, SF), the Bengals 0-2 (SEA, SF), Cleveland 0-1 (ARI), Detroit 0-2 (ARI, SD), the Colts beat Oakland going 1-1 (SD), Pittsburgh 0-2 (ARI, DEN), Tampa Bay 0-2 (SEA, SF), and Washington 0-1 (*SEA).

This is hardly scientific, I'm simply looking at the long distance travel effect. Injuries and suspensions, etc, are not included in this. However, in 2007 eastern teams were a combined 1-13 when coming to pacific standard. When western teams went to the eastern zone, they were 2-13. On that simple basis, jetlag is a factor. How big, it's hard to say. It's also worth nothing that of the three combined wins, all were from teams that made the playoffs.

Engram should play Sunday

4:53 PM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |

Head coach Mike Holmgren was a little more non-committal than Bobby Engram, but Matt Hasselbeck's favorite receiver should be a go on Sunday. Engram says he feels fine after a physically tough rehabilitation period. Engram also thinks Deion Branch should play against the Giants, too. It sounds like Bobby has been the psychiatrist for Branch and Hasselbeck recently. He's told Deion that he's ready, but he's gotta break through the mental stuff. Engram also says, while he was out, he would talk to Matt about football things and what he saw from the opposing defense during the game.

It should be an interesting week for the receivers, especially Michael Bumpus. The Coug has been returning punts and I'm not sure they want Engram back there after breaking a bone. But the team has 7 receivers on the roster and someone has to go. Is Koren Robinson a short-timer? Will Bumpus be moved back to the practice squad? Is Courtney Taylor's time in Seattle coming to a close? We'll find out soon.

Wednesday Seahawks practice report

4:28 PM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |

Mo Morris returned to the field in Renton today, but the RB was limited in practice -- as was Koren Robinson. While Koren had more reps than Bumpus, Koren was still gimpy. On the plus side, Branch and Engram both had plenty of work with the number one offense. Billy McMullen is currently getting the nod at split end, but we'll have to see what happens comes Sunday. Holmgren added again today that there may be a move on the roster this week.

As far as the wounded Seahawks, Trufant's club was reduced to a smaller cast. This one lets his fingers poke free. And one last note: all 53 players on the roster practiced in some capacity today. Good to hear, after the weeks of watching the walking wounded take the field.

Seattle blog uses 9/11 to trash talk Giants

9:21 AM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |

I'm not sure this embarrassing story should gain more traction on the blogosphere, but here it is: A local blog, Seahawkshuddle.com, took trash talking way too far last week by posting a photo of the still smoldering World Trade Center and then commencing to trash talk the Giants with 17 different 9/11 jokes. Really? The idiotic idea really started moving when the New York Daily News ran the story in one of their sports blogs.

Seahawkshuddle.com is now down, but you can still read the utterly distasteful jokes at deadspin.com. (Note to stupid: anything you post online can be COPIED). Another Giants site got ahold of the guy's e-mail address and you can guess how that went (Note: whatever stupidness you do on the web will ALWAYS follow you). The author has since apologized (I FREAKING hope so). But since the site no longer loads, I have to take the apology from the New York Daily News:

"We can only apologize so much. We can also let you know that 9/11 'smack' will no longer be tolerated here. Yes, we are a hardcore fan site and some of our members may continue to post offensive material in regards to sports teams, but the 9/11 comments have come to an end."

Is jackass too strong a word? Idiot just seems weak. I mean, come on. Well, at least New Yorkers know not all Seahawks fans are pinheads. Just some of them.
