M's Edition: MLB trade deadline is over

3:42 PM Thu, Jul 31, 2008 |

Well the non-waiver trade deadline has come and gone. The M's only traded one guy, that we know of. Reliever Arthur Rhodes is headed to the Florida Marlins. The TNT's Larry LaRue gives multiple reason why Rhodes will be missed. The M's get 22-year old Gaby Hernandez. The official press release is after the jump. Not a bad deal for the M's. They at least get a young arm and Rhodes moves to a contender. Here are the other deals or no deals of note:

Jarrod Washburn: Obvisiously, the M's and Yankees game of chicken ended in a draw. The M's want more for Washburn, but the NY doesn't want to give more. The Yankees feel taking on his contract is enough. Oh well, this deal could still happen. But now Washburn would have to clear waivers before being traded. Btw, the left-hander has dropped his ERA by 2 runs in the last 2 months. His June ERA was 2.93...in July, 2.67.

Raul Ibanez: So far, he's staying. According to a few websites, he was close to going to Toronoto for a couple of prospects. The M's must have not felt they were good enough. Because if Raul stays in Seattle and becomes a free agent at the end of the season and decides to leave, the M's will likely receive a couple of compensation draft picks. The Times M's beat writer Geoff Baker explains why the Blue Jays deal fell through.

Adrian Beltre: If anyone thought he was going to be dealt, then you must have thought David Stern and Clay Bennett truly wanted the Sonics to stay in Seattle. Minnesota wanted AB, but, according the to the Mpls. Star-Tribune, they didn't want to give up Nick Blackburn, Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Glen Perkins or Denard Span as part of a package deal. The SF Giants also hinted at interest in Beltre, but I doubt much progress was made.

Ken Griffey, Junior: The baseball player formerly known as the Kid isn't headed to Seattle yet. He's going to the windy city to play for the White Sox. Which could be good for my AL-only fantasy baseball team. It sounds like he'll play centerfield for Ozzie Guillen's club.

Jason Bay: The former Gonzaga star and Kirkland resident (at as of last year, Bay said he lives in Kirkland in the off-season) is going to reside right below Fenway Park's Green Monster. He was part of a 3-team deal that sent Manny Ramirez to the LA Dodgers. Bay can be a free agent after the 2009 season.

So did the M's make the right decisions to basically stand pat? I believe so. If nothing else, they give the players a chance to improve their worth (i.e. Washburn and Erik Bedard). Maybe I'm crazier than Bill Bavasi, but I think the M's can contend next season with a couple of off-season signings. They need a couple of guys to drive runs in, like free agent to be Mark Teixeira or possibly Manny Ramirez (the Dodgers hold a team option for next year). Hope that someone can reach Bedard. Add either Brandon Morrow and/or Ryan Rowland Smith to the rotation, then you got a chance.

MARINERS ACQUIRE RHP GABY HERNANDEZ FROM FLORIDA MARLINS Left-Hander Arthur Rhodes sent to Marlins

ARLINGTON, TX. -- Seattle Mariners Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Lee Pelekoudas today announced that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Gaby Hernandez from the Florida Marlins in exchange for left-handed pitcher Arthur Rhodes.

Hernandez, 22, was 5-8 with a 6.46 ERA in 17 starts combined between double-A Carolina and triple-A Albuquerque this season. He began the season with Albuquerque, making 13 starts before being transferred to Carolina on July 6. He is 3-0 with a 4.30 ERA in his four starts with the Mudcats. Hernandez was on the disabled list earlier this season with a strained left oblique muscle from April 23-May 19.

"We felt the opportunity to acquire a young pitcher made sense as we look towards 2009 and beyond," Pelekoudas said. "Pedro Grifol, our minor league field coordinator, has known Gaby for several years and believes he has a chance to help us in the future."

Hernandez was originally selected by the New York Mets in the third-round of the 2004 June draft. He was acquired by Florida with OF Dante Brinkley in exchange for C Paul Lo Duca on December 9, 2005. Hernandez owns 35-35 with a 3.97 ERA (242 ER, 549.0 IP) in five seasons in the Minor Leagues.

Rhodes, 38, was 2-1 with one save and a 2.86 ERA in 36 relief appearances with the Mariners this season. He has limited opponents to a .230 (17x74) average, while striking out 26 in 22.0 innings in relief. Rhodes has held opponents scoreless in 32 of 36 appearances this season, including a streak of 18 consecutive scoreless games (11.2 IP) that ended last night. He missed all of the 2007 season recovering from "Tommy John" surgery on his left elbow.

Rhodes has a career mark of 77-61, 4.28 in 689 big league games (61 starts) with Baltimore (1991-99), Seattle (2000-03, 2007-2008), Oakland (2004), Cleveland (2005) and Philadelphia (2006). He is 28-16, 3.03 in 312 career appearances with the Mariners. Rhodes currently ranks fourth in Mariners history with 312 career pitching appearances, while his 628 games ranks fourth among active left-handed relievers in the Major Leagues.
