Bavasi fired. The right move? Sound off.

12:10 PM Mon, Jun 16, 2008 |

I'm in the middle of working out the details, but I wanted M's fans to have a place to say whether or not they thought the firing of Mariners General Manager Bill Bavasi was the correct move for the team. Like CEO Howard Lincoln said, a change was certainly in order...

Sound off in the comments section below.

All I have to say is Absolutely. What were they waiting for this has been a disaster.

This was a no-brainer. For a 120 million dollar payroll 24-45 is unacceptable. Safeco is a pitcher friendly park, you need guys who can hit the ball consistently not hacks like Richie Sexson and Adrian Beltre thats 30 million wasted dollars give or take right there. Its about getting the right players to compete with the Angels. Bill Bavasi deserves to lose his job for poor move after poor move after poor move. Carlos Silva, and Miguel Batista are u kidding me? I am not against spending money in free agency if its spent wisely. The Mariners in recent years get an F in free agency and trades as far as I am concerned.

Right move? You bet. This team needs new direction... and now. A new GM deserves to help shape this team with his own vision this year. The roster needs a complete overhaul, and Bavasi doesn't need to meddle with that. You could argue this should have been done sooner, but now's the time to start from scratch. Go Mariners in 2011.

I think it is definitely the right move. Unfortunately, a lot more will have to change, too - some of which will be difficult given the current Union CBA and what coaches and managers can and can't require of the players and vice versa.

There seems to be very little cohesiveness in the M's this year. Sure, the M's need a team leader, but the players all need to check their ego's at the door and realize that baseball is still a team sport and only good teams will win, not teams that have good players, but good teams.

Agree? Disagree? So do I!

My husband and I are long time M's fans but it's getting tougher to continue to watch them decline. Since Hardgrove left it seems that the team has been in a tailspin. They were doing well up until that point and since Mac has taken the helm it seems that it's gone from bad to worse. There doesn't seem to be any leadership within the clubhouse. They play without any spark...without any "heart".

I will still follow the Mariners but without the same "heart" that I once felt. I hope that they can turn things around but they are running out of time for this season.

ABSOLUTELY. It has taken way too long and now Lincoln and Armstrong should be right behind him!!

Of course it was the right decision! It's amazing how many bad decisions it takes at that level to lose your job.

We called it 2 days ago:

It's clear that Mr. B made some bad decisions but then he never stepped on the playing field nor sat in the dugout calling signals. It's going to take more than just letting Mr. B go, the M's need to clean house........top to bottom and everything in between. John Mac may know the game inside and out and probably has a lot of good insight but he is not manager material. You can see it in the players faces both on and off the field. There are no leaders on the M's roster. Back in the glory days of Sweet Lou, the 116 game season was full of leaders, not just one or two. I wish I could find a job where my performance is not a factor in my income. I wish I could have several bad months of productivity and still get paid. It's time for the players to be held responsible for their actions (or lack of actions). Too bad the players can't be paid for their effort like tennis or golf....in those sports, if you play good you get paid good. If you have an off day, well, you don't make squat.

I cannot believe it took this long for this move. Now, can they please just take a loss on Richie Sexton? He is simply awful. Vidro is a disappointment. Silva was a HUGE waste of money. I love this team, but something has to happen and it has to happen now. Even Ichiro seems to have lost it. It is sad to see this team imploding this way. Overhaul it and do it now. Next year can be a big turnaround if management makes it happen now.

Morris Rasciner said:

This is a good start. Then get rid of John McClaren. After that Richie Sexon and systematically dump all the starting pichers except Felix.Trade Jojima and Beltre[subject to a final review of his hitting numbers]. Bring up Clement and rotate him with Jamie Burke for the rest of this season. Play Willy Bloomquist every day to determine if he can hit under those circumstasnces. Let your pitching coach choose the pitchers from the bull pen and all the minor league affiliates and make up a new staff. Let him really manage the pichers as long as he agrees to not choose Bedard, Silva, Batista, or Washburn, as a starter unless every executive signs off on that service. Hold the new GM and field Mgr. to a high standard with a short term to perform. After all Ichiro's dog could not do a worse job than is being done now.

Two YEARS too late. He was never more than a shoe salesman trying to live off his father's rep.

It's about time. It's a shame it has taken this long to finally recognize and remove the first "weakest link". Next should be Mac...it's sad to think that these are the leader's our players have to follow. I have watched "Little League" basics not even be executed during our PROFESSIONAL games. When you don't have a sound foundation, your structure will always be weak. We want our PROUD, HEALTHY and MOTIVATED Mariner's back...and I'm sure they are anxiously waiting for someone capable of motivating and leading them instead of looking to blame the dugout for that missing leadership. Place the responsibility where it should be...I've never seen a successful team that coaches itself from within the player's ranks. Pride and teamwork go hand in hand...and together they produce enthusiasm. Hurry back Mariner's...we miss you.

Looks like it's time to truly rebuild this franchise. Something it has needed since after the 2001 season when roid boy Boone hit 40 some homers then tanked in the playoffs. I'm tired of our teams coming close or rebuilding. Our city is cursed.

I was at the game on Saturday and it was a pathetic display. Why oh why have the Mariners kept players that are not worth the money. We get rid of Adam Jones, Ben Brassard, Jamie Moyer, and Sherrill and keep people like Sexson. He was booed more on Saturday than the Supersonics new owners!!!!! The guy is pathetic and struck out swinging on bases loaded. What a waste of money. Give me the $89K he gets per game and I will bunt my way to a higher batting average than him. This ball club has serious problems throughout. One firing is not going to fix anything. Start selling your tickets for a discount this year, the ballpark couldnt even sell out when the Red sox were in town

It's about time! two months late, but still best bests out of their camp this year!

I can't believe this long...should have happened after last season at the latest...how many questionable or non-moves does someone get... this team was suppose to be near the top of the league...now we're in the cellar...he needed to go and now the manager needs to go....its time to clean house and start over managerial wise...

ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!

Its about @#$%^& time. He should have been let go three years ago and we would not be where we are now!

Bavasi should have been fired before this season even started. The trade of Jones and Sherril was something that should have shown the ineptness of Bavasi. So now it will be two to three years before the Mariners even come close to the .500 mark.

I am glad that I have the Seahawks, Huskies and Thunderbirds. Seattle in now without a basketball taem and a MLB quality team.

skok said:

Someone needs to be replaced. Team has been mediocre at best since Edgar Left. Seattle Mariners have no Fight, no Cohesiveness. When it's 2 outs & Sexson Comes to the plate. . . time to stretch the legs and/or hit the concession stands. I believe it's the mariners lack of fight/heart that is bringin down Ichiro.

I heard on PTI, Griffey is interested in going to Rays?? Griffey would at least be a leader and maybe instill a little Heart into the team.

Don said:

It came down to whether in 5 years he had helped the team move closer to the playoffs are not. He did not and now he is gone. With such a payroll we should be dancing over everyone. Maybe time for changes at the line up level now. A bunch of the players should get off the dime and start doing the game right instead of just enough to keep playing.

serp said:

Right move? ABSOLUTELY. Now they need to follow it up by getting rid of Lincoln and Armstrong. Only then will I think that they are serious about building a contending team.

Jeff said:

This was 4 year to late...Bill B. needs to go back to doing what he did best and that was cleaning and sweeping up the ball parks with a broom!

This is not going to fix all the issues but it was one large step in the right direction!

Bye Bavasi! we wont miss you!

crash said:

Bill B should have never been hired, he spent his whole life using his family name to ruin whatever franchise was insane enough to hire him

tfogie said:

Ballcap in the trash can, XM away from MLB channels (except for the Cubbies). Show me a good move for the GM, and just maybe, just maybe, I'll come back. Bavasi couldn't pick or trade for good players if his life depended on it. With Bavasi gone, now we may see a change in player attitude. Next comes players....SEXSON has to go....should have never been here to start with. Pitching staff....produce or be gone!!! There again...all players....produce or be gone!!!

Let it be enough to say:

I had the opportunity to go to the Safe and watch the team this summer.

I turned it down to go fishing instead.

Mariners? Where? There are no Mariners in Seattle.

Only foolish men who think they are a team and can play ball everyday.

Bavasi should have been let go a long time ago. The team is a joke. Ritchie is a disgrace-(Does he even train?) What kind of GM hires a talentless player like that? He should have been sent to the minors long ago. McClaren has no guts.
All he does is sit there when a pitcher allows hits or walks. There is no pack leader and the wolves are frustrated. How can they face little children who really look up to them? GET IT TOGETHER!! Like the guy said above, one of us could bunt a better batting average than Sexson.

Bob Krugh said:

Yes!!!! It was a good move for all. BUT! They need to move more players around and find the right ones that will help the team win. Why do they keep Richie at first. He is too slow, having a very hard time hitting and when he throws the ball it looks like his sister taught him.
I still think they are not work at one and the players don't care at all. I have not heard anything from the players that tells me thay they are feed up with their playing and are going to do something about it.
The manager needs to say who will be at a certain position and put the rest of the them in a bag and shake the heck out of it and see what he has left and maybe use the farm league.

megan said:

Deffinately a good move on our part and now that they've fired John McClaren I really hope they can find someone for next season who can make us a winning team. its very sad to see our boys out there not giving it their all. :(

Randall L Larson said:

Now all we need is the TRIFECTA
Bavasi's Gone, Mclaren's gone.
Now get rid of all the $1 million + a year players and bring up the minor leaguers!!!
