Time For Some Real Football

8:15 PM Tue, Jul 31, 2007 |

The days of light practice and shell drills are over for the Seahawks. The boys threw on the pads today and started playing some REAL football. You would think the guys were given brand new toys to play with...excitement was overflowing and smiles were ear to ear! Tight end, Marcus Pollard, said it's the ONLY way to play the game and Mike Holmgren added that football was made to play with pads!
The play of the day came from strong safety Brian Russell. Seneca Wallace threw a pass down field and Russell soared out of nowhere to break up the pass. Then, the Hawks new defensive back yelled back to Seneca, "Don't test me, Sen! Don't test me, Sen!" Clearly, chemistry is coming into play but boys will always be boys!

Notes from camp

3:20 PM Tue, Jul 31, 2007 |

Danny O'Neill at the Seattle Times is reporting that DJ Hackett missed camp today. The WR/expecting father took off to be by his wife's side. Can't find out yet, but DJ may already be a dad. Also, the team will no longer use owner Paul Allen's jet. According to O'Neill, the 757 was sold and this year the Seahawks will charter a jet.

Niners RB Gore breaks hand

10:00 AM Tue, Jul 31, 2007 |

According to ESPN, Niners RB Al Gore (the same Pro Bowler who ran through the Hawks defense ad nauseam last year) has broken his hand and is likely to miss preseason. Gore led the NFC with 1,695 yards last season. He'll be looked at again on Monday.

Seahawks tickets sell out

9:55 AM Tue, Jul 31, 2007 |

Well, it happened so fast if you blinked Monday morning, you missed a chance to get Seahawks single game tickets. According to the Hawks website, the entire season sold out. Wow. There is still a chance to get preseason tickets. I could be wrong, but I can't remember the last time a whole season sold out so quickly.

It's On: Training camp begins in Kirkland

9:18 PM Sun, Jul 29, 2007 |

At 8:45 am on a rainy Sunday in Kirkland the NWCN Seahawks Training camp officially kicked off. As a Seahawks fan and a football fan, I was getting goose-bumps as I watched the Hawks take the field today for day one of camp.

5:15 PM Fri, Jul 27, 2007 |

According the Seahawks, defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs has failed his pre-camp physical. The team put him on the physically unable to perform list (PUP). A spokesman for the Hawks says this a routine thing before camp opens.

Hawks' Top Pick Signs

4:52 PM Thu, Jul 26, 2007 |

The Seahawks have agreed to terms with their top pick CB Josh Wilson. Seattle grabbed him in the 2nd round. He could see time in their nickel and dime packages. Unfortunately, his signing costs former Huskies RB Kenny James a roster spot. The Hawks cut him today. Remember to watch Northwest Cable News all day Sunday for complete coverage of the opening day of Seahawks training camp. Plus, we'll have special reports on KING 5 news Sunday at 5pm, 630pm, 10pm & 11pm.

Wilson last unsigned draft pick

11:50 PM Tue, Jul 24, 2007 |

The Seahawks climb the latter of signing their draft picks. On Tuesday, the club announced they've signed fourth round pick DE Baraka Atkins and 3rd round pick DT Brandon Mebane. Only 2nd round pick CB Josh Wilson remains unsigned out of the Hawks 2007 draft.

Time for our 2-minute drill of stories:

Profootballweekly.com reports that G Chris Gray has a lot more left in his 37-year-old tank.

I've bagged on Arizona QB Matt Leinart lately, some of it justifiable. But TMZ.com reports that his baby's mama wants $30,000 a month in child support. Baby Leinart's mom, Brynn Cameron, plans to play for the USC basketball team again...would this affect her eligibility?

Former Husky Mark Brunell could be headed to Michael Vick's (former?) team. The Atlanta Journal Constitution writes that the Falcons a couple of connections for the Washington Redskins backup QB.

The Rams spent all of Tuesday meeting with QB Marc Bulger's agent. He wants a new deal before training camp begins on Thursday. Bulger was the 8th highest paid on his team in 2006.

San Fran signs former Husky CB Dashon Goldson. The Niners picked him in the fourth round this year. So far, former Cougar Jason Hill is unsigned.

Vick told to skip camp

5:45 PM Mon, Jul 23, 2007 |

The commish final talks something like a suspension. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell tells Atlanta QB Micheal Vick to skip training camp pending a review. In case no one else has said it, he's screwed (allegedly). If this all goes down, he'll lose over $50 million and more in endorsements and salary. Do you think he made that much on betting on dogs (allegedly)?

NWCN Seahawks Training Camp

4:32 PM Mon, Jul 23, 2007 |

6 days and counting to the Northwest Cable News Seahawks Training Camp. I just wanted to let you Seahawks fans know that NWCN will kick things off earlier than that.

Friday: Paul Silvi and NFL analyst Brock Huard will go over the big question marks on Northwest Sports Tonight.

Saturday: Rookies and quarterbacks report. Of course, some veterans generally saunter in unannounced too. We'll have reports from them on Northwest Sports Tonight and KING.

Sunday: It's the first official day of camp. NWCN will air live reports throughout the day starting at 10am. Both Huard and KING 5's Chris Egan will tag-team that coverage. So look for a lot of inside info all day long. Plus, reports on KING 5 news at 5, 630, 10 & 11pm.

Here's a few stories to keep you busy in the meantime:

Cowboys QB Tony Romo's off-season is chronicled. Wow, tries to qualify for US Open in a regional tournament, hangs out with Carrie Underwood, and sing "Don't Stop Believing" with Mr. Belding. When is his 15 minutes up? I'm with Keyshawn Johnson who says "He's played five games, he's an over-hyped deal."

Former Seahawk and Cougar Chad Eaton in trouble again.

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is one of the highest paid safeties.

A couple of former Seahawks make ProFootballTalk.com's All-Turd Offensive Team in 2007. It's graded on the past 12 months. New defensive end Patrick Kerney makes the All-Turd defensive list.

Talk about bogarted some tickets. Some dude in Wisconsin has 331 season tickets to the Packers. Not a typo...that's 331 season tickets. Another reason why cheeseheads are a different breed (and not a good one - oops, my Vikings' bias is coming out). Apparently, a bar owner offered him a $1 million for the rights to his ticket package. He said no.

Arizona QB Matt Leinart's ex not happy with his parenting skills. Brynn Cameron talks about caring for their son near the bottom of the article. I don't think Leinart is gonna win any "Best Father" awards anytime soon.

Training camp just around the corner

11:07 PM Thu, Jul 19, 2007 |

It seems weird that Seahawks training camp opens a week from Sunday. In a business where you're suppose to watch and report on games and not cheer, it definitely seems like pro football rules our sports office. I just talked with Paul Silvi about it. The NFL is favorite sport, hands down. We both agree that there's nothing like it as a kid. We remembered growing up, you'd wear your favorite player's jersey, watch the game, and then re-enact your favorite plays outside after the game was over. In my case, I always wanted to be Vikings QB Fran Tarkenton throwing a touchdown pass to WR Sammy White or Ahmad Rashad. Or acting like RB Chuck Foreman breaking off a monster run. For you Seahawks fans, who didn't want to be Jim Zorn, Steve Largent, Curt Warner or even Sam McCullum. You could only do that 16 times a year, or if you're lucky, a little more with the playoffs. Maybe that's the draw or what makes it special...the limited opportunities to live vicariously through your hero. Baseball, you have a 162 games. Basketball, there's 82. Plus, the NFL brings fans together more than the college game. Die-hard Seahawks fans blanket the state and surrounding states. College sports are more divisive. Just ask anyone to debate who's better the Cougs or Huskies (Sorry WWU Vikings or CWU Wildcats). But there's something special about the NFL. July 29th offers new hope for Seahawk fans. And it revs up the KING 5 Sports Department.

Here are some articles that'll keep you going until then:

Pro Football Weekly's Dan Arkush believes the NFC West looks like a race to the wire in ‘07. The Hawks should win, but he thinks it'll be a lot closer than you'd think.

PFW.com also reports that CB Josh Wilson and DT Brandon Mebane will make an impact on the field this season.

Falcons QB Michael Vick is in a lot of trouble (insert "No Duh" here). If you haven't seen The Smoking Gun yet, they've got his indictment online.

CNBC's Darren Rovell says Nike has suspended Vick's new shoe release. Plus, the NFL banned a few names with Vick's jersey for fans...like Ookie, Dog, or Mexico. How bad do you have to be if Rev. Sharpton is coming after you?

Someone posted the top 10 plays by Vick on Youtube. It's set to a song, I'm guessing, that's called "I'm an Outlaw." Or go with Youtube favorite, "Dog's in the Kennel" song. (put to music of "Cats in the Cradle").

Former Seahawk Chad Brown returns to the Patriots. Man, he's getting old by NFL standards. Brown is 36. Sorry Mack Strong and Chris Gray.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo karaokes to Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer". Oh sweet irony (courtesy of Deadspin), here's a lyric from the song: "We've got to hold on, ready or not..." A sense of humor or totally clueless? Hmmm?

Reason #1 why QB Matt Leinart will fail to take Arizona to new heights? It's not Denny Green's departure, but maybe that he's friends with Nick Lachey. Sorry Rainiers fans. Or reason #2 is because kharma will catch up to him for dumping his hot and pregnant girlfriend at the time for Paris Hilton. (I know, old news, but it's still funny/gross)

Training camp & ticket info

10:38 AM Wed, Jul 18, 2007 |

Ready for some Seahawks football yet? Me three. José Miguel Romero over at the Times has an article today about the Hawks upcoming NWCN Training Camp in Kirkland starting July 29th (that's right, no need to travel to the arid home of the Eagles this year, thanks to the defunct China Bowl). But don't get your hopes up. Practices will be closed to the general public. However, tickets go on sale Monday for an intrasquad scrimmage held at Memorial Stadium at the Seattle Center on August fourth, with autographs available after the event. There is also a practice you can catch at Husky Stadium. Check out Mr. Romero's article for more info.

Animal abuse... the gateway crime

5:48 PM Fri, Jul 13, 2007 |

While on the surface it might appear to some to be a teen prank, it's arguably much more.
In Bellingham the last couple weeks, there have been two crows and two squirrels killed and left on display for neighbors to see. This is not a case of "kids being kids." Consider the people who have admitted their fasicination with death, began with animals and later turned to humans: Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz and Albert DeSalvo are a few who come to mind.
A 6-year-old chasing ants around with a magnifying glass is one thing. This is another.

Tank Johnson cleared of charges

2:30 PM Mon, Jul 02, 2007 |

Former Husky and Chicago Bear Tank Johnson has been cleared of driving while impaired charges. The AP reports that his blood alcohol level was .072 (the legal limit in Arizona is .08). Tank was arrested June 22 for suspicion of driving under the influence, but no charges were filed. In the meantime, the Bears had cut him after they felt "embarrassed" by the recent brush with the law.
