I'm not complaining, mind you, that the weather in Detroit is unseasonably warm for this time of year. Today, for example, it's in the low 40s, without a flake of snow on the ground. That is, except for the "Winter Blast," where snowmaking crews were brought in to create a giant snow slide and a dogsledding track in the middle of downtown. Meanwhile, the five-day forecast shows a 40-percent chance of snow on Saturday and Sunday. Yes, Ford Field is covered, but we all have to get there for game day. Picture of the fake snow below... ...Now that we're worked up into a frenzy over this 12th Man trademark ridiculousness, here's what a Dallas columnist has to say about it: "One thing you can say about the Seahawks' use of the 12th man motto is it's not real imaginative. As representatives of a city that gave us the new business paradigm Microsoft, the Seahawks marketing department should be forced to cough up the slogan just on sheer lack of creativity. And they probably will, next Monday." (Thanks for the link, Ripley!) We reported on Friday that Texas A&M was considering going to court to stop the Seahawks from using the "12th Man," and now they've done it, filing a temporary restraining order. The Hawks' 12th Man tradition began way back in 1984, so why is Texas A&M trying to stop it now? Hmmm... ...
Coach Holmgren described Monday's workout as a "now-we-remember-we-have-a-game-to-play kind of practice." Here are a few pictures from the Detroit Lions practice facility in Allen Park, Michigan... ...I have to say I was surprised after I walked around Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood on Sunday afternoon and saw just three -- only three -- people wearing Seahawks gear. Really, now. That's pathetic. In Pittsburgh, I guarantee it's a different story. (But perhaps Alderwood was just a freak convergence of non-fans. KING 5 News Director Pat Costello said a theater in Issaquah was packed with Hawks colors over the weekend.) I know not many people have Hawks gear (but tons of Mariners stuff, eh?), but it's time to get excited and show some support.
While her husband Mike is on the sidelines at Super Bowl XL, Kathy Holmgren will be in Congo on an aid mission for Northwest Medical teams. The trip was planned months ago, and Coach Holmgren says he's happy she's going. There's no word on whether she'll be able to see it on TV, although I bet that's out of the question. ...We'll be streaming this Sunday's Hawks sendoff rally live on KING5.com and NWCN.com, and you can also watch it live on NorthWest Cable News. The event begins at 8 a.m. in the north lot of QWest Field, and the team arrives at 8:40 a.m. More details of the event here. ...
Huge, absolutely huge. There’s no event like it. Just as we’re launching to the Olympics, the Seahawks bring the thrill of a Super Bowl to all of us. Lucky thing we have more than one “kitchen sink” for our Detroit crew, because we already sent everything including - the other - kitchen sink to Torino. The scale of the Super Bowl is immense. The crush of media and logistics easily surpasses other events we may remember around these parts - the APEC summit (with 18 world leaders), W.T.O. and yes, even the MLB All-Star Game at Safeco Field in 2001. Immense, but it leaves you in awe.... ...The Seahawks are flying to Detroit on Sunday morning, and everyone's invited to a big sendoff rally at Qwest Field before they go. Coach Mike Holmgren and team president Tim Ruskell are expected to thank the crowd for their support. The event and parking are both free. Gates open at 7 a.m. on Sunday, and the event gets underway at 8 a.m. ...Three good video clips for you. First, there's Evening Magazine's Jim Dever, who traveled to Pittsburgh to try to sell Seahawks gear to the Steelers faithful. ("Try" is the operative word here.) Second, there's the Charlotte mayor who was forced to wear a Seahawks jersey after losing a bet with Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. And finally, you have to see the parrot who says, "I wanna be a Seahawk." Now THAT'S entertainment. ...
Just when you thought you've seen everything on eBay, some guy is auctioning off a hot dog he bought at the Seahawks-Panthers game. "Super Dog is vacuum sealed and frozen for freshness," he writes. Believe it or not, right now bidding is up to
Everyone in the Northwest, duh. But some are predicting the Super Bowl could be the lowest-rated nationwide since the early 1970s. Why? I'll let the Chicago Tribune's Ed Sherman explain it: "(They're) two teams from relatively small markets, with one having little or no national following. (And) neither team has a marquee player of Peyton Manning's caliber." Ahem, let me remind Sherman that we have this MVP by the name of Shaun Alexander. Meanwhile, the Seahawks-Panthers game on Sunday was the highest-rated TV event in Seattle since 1994. ...I'm not talking about the folks who live in the Pittsburgh area. But Steelers fans who are appearing out of thin air across the country, even in Seattle, to relive the glory days. And there are a lot of them. A poll running on ESPN.com right now has 63% of the 150,000 votes predicting a Steelers victory. And of that number, 60% say they're Steeler fans (wait, some Hawk fans predicted the Steelers will win?) And since the Super Bowl is just a five hour drive from Pittsburgh, it's a fair bet that we'll be outnumbered in Detroit. ...
Absolutely hilarious. San Francisco Supervisor Geraldo Sandoval actually proposed adopting the Seahawks as the city's team (49ers who?) for the remainder of the season to help spur business at local sports bars. (See end of story.) ...Now that the Hawks are in the Big Game, we're feverishly gearing up to send a large coverage team to Detroit. Jean Enersen, Dennis Bounds, Paul Silvi and a host of others will be hitting the road soon. Finding hotel rooms was hard enough, let along handling the incredibly complex logistics behind covering a major event live on the road. I'll be leaving to Detroit, too, laptop at the ready, and I'll blog some behind-the-scenes juice right here later next week. ...
Fascinating factoid: The U.W. Seismology lab says all the screaming and jumping around during Sunday's game at Qwest Field was the equivalent of an earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter Scale. Wow. ...It looks like even the oddsmakers might have a bias against the Seahawks, putting them down as 3 1/2 point underdogs to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dave Goldberg at AP senses a bit of bias in the handicapping, writing that it's "presumably because they are the STEELERS, with four titles in six years in the 1970s. Seattle is a historically faceless franchise, even with running back Shaun Alexander easily capturing this year's MVP honors." The 'Hawks certainly got no love from the TV announcers today, who sounded disappointed that Carolina was losing so handily.... ...

Also, check out KING5.com for complete coverage including streaming video. ...Well, Throw 'em a bone... but not anymore. Giving up a long TD pass with 5:09 to play really quieted the crowd. I still think a 20 point lead is safe. ...Turn out the lights, the party's over. I think it's safe to make your reservations for Detroit and Ford Field after Shaun Alexander goes one yard to put the Seahawks up 34-7. The Seahawks will meet the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL, barring some serious weirdness. Once again, the Seahawks will take on one of the NFL's toughest, fastest defenses. But so far, that's hasn't been a problem, and the Hawks are playing some pretty dominating defense of their own. Alexander Sets Seahawks record Alexander now as 31 carries for 132 yards. That's the most ever for the Seahawks in a playoff game. ...Just when it looked like the Seahawks might be softening up a little bit, a big play by Michael Boulware turns the tide again. The pickoff stops what looked like a promising drive for Carolina, the only one they've had today. Total Offense: Carolina: 109 yards Total domination so far. Carolina injury update. Dan Morgan has a shoulder injury. His return is questionable. I've actually never seen a quick kick in an NFL game, but it was a great call. By the way, 67,837 tickets were "distributed" according to the Seahawks. I'm sure just about everyone showed up. You know, it's way too quiet in the press box. The glass keeps the noise down. ...Wide receiver Bobby Engram is injured and will not return. The press box announcer says Engram has a hip injury. Still, the Seahawks are turning in a dominating performance on the field. ...Couldn't have started the second half any better than that. Alexander rips up the defense. Hasselbeck slices up the secondary and suddenly it's a 20-point lead. Halftime stats show just how much the Hawks dominated the first half. Seattle racked up 252 yards of total offense compared to just 62 for Carolina. And the vaunted combination of Delhomme to Smith was good for just two completions for eight yards. Shaun Alexander had 80 yards in the first half but topped 125 on the first drive of the third quarter. ...A field goal just before the half would have been a boost for Seattle. Any time you can take a 20-7 lead into the lockerroom at half time, that's good. Defense has been stout. The offense is moving the ball and Shaun Alexander has ripped off some sizeable runs. The only problem for the Hawks: that 59-yard punt return. If the Hawks can keep up the intensity in the second half, this one's in the bag and you can pack your bags for Detroit. Detroit in February. Brrrrrrrrrrrr. ...It's always good to comeback and score to thwart a potentially momentum changing punt return, even if it's a field goal. By the way, Fox isn't showing it but the kickoff team does a little disco dance right before the kick. When you don't get on the field that much, you celebrate when you can, Paul Silvi tells me. ...From my seat is certainly looked like there was a block in the back. A 59-yard punt return for a touchdown could be a huge momentum changer. We'll find out when the Seahawks offense gets back on the field. ...This could get ugly if the Seahawks don't lose their focus. The offense is capitalizing on Carolina miscues. The defense is stuffing the Panther offense when it's not picking off Delhomme. Looking good. Keep your fingers crossed. ...That was just an awful pass by Delhomme. Another interception and a chance to put Carolina in a big hole. A good run by Alexander. Now to punch it in. ...Lofa Tatupu took one right in the head. He looked wobbly after getting up. Hope he can keep up the great play. The entire defense is looking good. ...The Seahawks could have really taken command of the game with a touchdown after Lofa Tatupu's interception. A 10-point lead is good, 14 is better. Also, Shaun Alexander looks like he's not having ill effects from the concussion he suffered last week. ...Well, I'm all settled in on the press box. It's nice and warm in here with thick glass between us and the field. It's also packed. No, really packed. I couldn't leave my chair if I wanted. If you're curious, here's the view from the KING 5 chair. Not bad. I'm about five yards deep in the end zone and halfway up. Walked by former Dallas Cowboys QB Troy Aikman a moment ago as he walked to the FOX Sports broadcast booth. I knew he was a big guy, but you don't get a good feel for how big until you see him in person. He would have played center on my high school basketball team. And our football coach would have put him on the defensive line I'm sure. Hey, the perks are pretty good. Quite a spread in the "press lounge." Roast beef, a huge salad bar and a nice dining room for all the sports writers and broadcasters. Of course, I didn't get any because I was just too busy blogging to the world. ;-) Another funny thing, the TVs in the press box are a good 3 seconds behind live action on the field. Hey Fox, speed up your broadcasts. ...A couple amazing catches there, including that TD by Jerramy Stevens. The Seahawks are almost making it seem easy. And now an interception! After what he wrote about the team, I hope Skip Bayless is getting indigestion watching the game! ...Face Paint must be in short supply around Seattle, at least in the Seahawks colors. Seahawks have slathered it liberally on their faces and other body parts at Qwest Field, young and old alike. ...Hello, My name is John Goff and I'll be your blogger for the NFC Championship game today, that is I'm stuck in a cab and traffic is U-G-L-Y, uuuuuuuugllyyyyyy. I mean the kiddie canoe ride at the Puyallup Fair moves faster than this. ......that the TV was showing a sun-drenched Qwest Field (at that point I should have known it was a dream!) .... The clock was ticking down to zero ... Then the scoreboard came up ... the incredulous announcers were reading off the score: 27-0, Hawks. Couple good stories today in the local papers talking about Northwesterners making plans for Detroit. The Seattle Times has a great guide on getting to, and around, Detroit. Blog commenter "AKHAWKFAN" spotted this little gem on ESPN.com: "The Seahawks are far from super." Skip Bayless writes, among other things, "The Sea-frauds have had the luckiest road to the Super Bowl this side of a fast food contest winner. I'm convinced they're the destiny-driven product of the NFL's easiest schedule and weakest division, the NFC West." Shameless promotion alert! First, I'll take you through the inside of a "media crush." Photographers jockeying for position, body to body, often leaning on each other. If anyone goes down, everybody goes down hard - really. That's what happens when a starter for a team playing for the NFC title gets arrested the week of the game. The Seattle media is a polite and professional group. But when the story is this big, people squeeze and jockey for position. In a situation like this, everybody knows the athlete in question will make a brief statement and that's it. You have about 2-3 minutes of questions and answers and that's the only time the topic will be addressed. You miss it, too bad. Is Sean Locklear's arrest this week a distraction for the Seahawks? You bet... ...Looking at a poll of ESPN.com fans, they are picking the Seahawks to win and a majority of voters, (56.6% at last look), said they'd prefer to watch the Seahawks in the Superbowl over Carolina. The vast majority also have faith that Shaun Alexander will play and be effective in the game. Police arrested Locklear on Sunday morning on a domestic violence charge, and he's currently behind bars at the Seattle Correctional Facility. No word on whether he play this Sunday. More details here. ...
Seattle Times columnist Steve Kelley sums up Carolina's incredible success on the road: "They are the most dangerous team that has come to Seattle this season. Carolina is the final obstacle. The Panthers are roadproof. They won't be intimidated by the 12th-man howls whipping through their ear holes. Bring on the noise. Bring on the funk. For Carolina it's all as sweet as a James Taylor ballad." ...That didn't take long. Just five minutes after tickets for the NFC Championship game went on sale at 10 a.m. today, Seahawks.com announced they were sold out. Brutal. That's even faster than the ten minutes it took to sell out last week's game. Lots of horror stories in comments below... ...
They're going to run a few more test, but Coach Holmgren says Alexander should be back for next week's game. The next big question on everyone's minds is who the Hawks will play next. Who's the best bet, Bears or Panthers? Who's easier to beat? ...We've endured over a hundred comments (below) from Redskin fans who trash-talked the Hawks like never before. Here's one: "Game over, take your little NFC weakest division hat and shirt and get ready for the draft." And another: "Your overhyped team will blow it yet again. Skins will control the clock and knock the teeth out of the SeaFlops mouths." Ok, Hawks fans, it's time for a little payback. Post your comments below and I'll post them on the ExtremeSkins site.... ...
That was a total nail-biter. Despite all the trash-talking in this blog, the Redskins kept it interesting. (Of course, Alexander wasn't in for most of the game.) Tons of video here, and click below for photos... ...(Game in progress) This Seahawks team is more than just Shaun Alexander as that touchdown shows. Hasselbeck seems to have settled down and, heck, he has 17 yards rushing. With Alexander out with a concussion, could Hasselbeck become the team's leading rusher this game? ...(Game in progress) After a Jimmy Williams fumbled punt return in the 2nd quarter, Brock Huard just stormed out of the news room and yelled out, "Egan, I guarantee Jimmy Williams will no longer be returning punts in this game." Brock is predicting the sure-handed Bobby Engram will take over the punt-returning duties for the rest of the game. 2nd quarter in progress, still no score. ...(Game in progress) In the first quarter Shaun Alexander just took a shot to the side of the head. Brock Huard thinks this is very bad news for Seattle. Brock says he would be surprised if Alexander returns to the game. Anytime you take a big shot to the head, it's very rare a player returns to the game. Lets hope for the Seahawks case, that Brock is wrong. 1st quarter still in progress, no score. ...
When the team took the field and Ken Hamlin raised the 12th Man flag, the stadium literally shook with noise. I've been to dozens of Husky games, and there's no comparison. I can't even hear the announcer. ...It's no surprise the Redskins have tipped (what is it, three?) Hasselbeck passes so early in the game. They lead the league in tips and it's something all of their defensive coordinators preach. ...Chanting throngs of fans and plenty of face paint here at Qwest Field as we stand in an unbelievably long line to buy some Hawks gear before the game. Everyone is pumped up and ready to crush the Skins. I'll be blogging from the stands, so stay tuned... ...
A little tune to get you in the mood for the playoffs, featuring Dustin Blatnik and the 12th Man Band. ...Speaking of the Washington Post, the newspaper published an interview with Mayor Greg Nickels responding to questions about Seattle's politeness factor. "The level of animus you will hear directed at opposing players is different in Seattle," said Nickels. "Nice is part of our culture." Update: I can't resist posting what Chad said in comments below, "He used the word 'animus' when talking about sports. This is football Greg, not badminton." ...
"Is Seattle a football town? Hardly.... Their entire history is about failing. Here is their all-time playoff record, 3-7. That stinks. Here is the last time the Seahawks won a playoff game, 1984. Ha-ha-ha. The Redskins beat Seattle once already this season. They can do it again. Here's the news un-filtered, the Seahawks smell like coffee. Grind 'em up." All that noise from a guy who actually thought people wanted to see a TV show based on his life. Are you kidding me? George Costanza signs up to play you, and even "he" couldn't make your life interesting. CBS cancelled your sorry show faster than it could make a hash-mark with Nielsen. Reminds me of that sorry Redskin’s offense. Unless their defense plans on scoring three touchdowns Saturday, that team doesn't have a chance. So, Kornheiser, keep popping off from a distance. You can rail at the Seahawks all you want, as long as you call us Monday and explain how your team lost to our pitiful franchise. ...All-Pro defensive back Dave Brown died suddenly of an apparent heart attack while playing basketball with his son in Lubbock, Texas on Tuesday. "The Seahawks are very saddened by the news today,” Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke said. “This Saturday, 68,000 Seahawks fans will observe a moment of silence to reflect upon not only a great football player, but also a great man." ...I was wondering why there are a bunch of comments ripping Paul Silvi in his post about Joe Gibbs below. So we put on our geek hats and discovered Silvi's post had been linked by a Redskins fan site called ExtremeSkins.com. Aha! How weak is that? ...After listening to Redskins coach Joe Gibbs talk to the media this week, it sure sounds like he's starting early with excuses why they're going to lose Saturday. First and foremost, he says, "We have six days to prepare, they'll have 14." Not quite Joe. They've had an extra week to relax and get healthy, but they had to wait for your team to beat Tampa. THAT'S when the Hawks could finally start looking at tape of their next opponent, and preparing. I also know Gibbs is spending most of the day and night at Redskins Headquarters, along with his coaches, all so they can trot out that sorry offense Saturday. Joe, do yourself a favor - go home and take a nap. We'll wake you and your team up around 5pm Saturday! ...Ed Viesturs, the first American to climb all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks, raised the Seahawks "12th Man" flag on top of the Space Needle today. Watch the raw video from SkyKING here. ...
Ouch, here comes the trash talking from the Washington Post. Don't read this unless you want to get fired up. "Is Seattle a football town? Hardly," writes columnist Tony Kornheiser. "They were so bad in the AFC, they got punted to the NFC a few years ago. Their entire history is about failing." Yeah, well Kornboy can trash talk all he wants, but the general consensus is the Seahawks will trounce the Redskins. And Vegas has the Hawks by 9. (Thanks, Ripley!) ...Speed dialers by the thousands were left empty-handed after a fresh batch of Seahawks-Redskins playoff tickets sold out in just ten minutes this morning. Still looking? Take out a loan and check out eBay or Craigslist. ...Thanks to a Washington Redskins win over Tampa Bay, the Redskins will now head to Seattle to face the Seahawks next Saturday at 1:30. Sure, the Redskins are hot, they've now won six straight games, their defense is really clicking and they did beat the Seahawks back on October 2nd, but I think this is the team the Hawks wanted. The Giants and Panthers have too many weapons on offense and defense and the Redskins offense once again relied on their defense to score points. Wide-out Santana Moss is a real dangerous threat, but the Bucs proved he can be contained, just two grabs for 18 yards against Tampa Bay. I also don't expect pro-bowler Matt Hasselbeck to have the kind of game Chris Simms did against Washington. No matter what sport your in, you have take it one game at a time, but I like the news that the Redskins are coming to Seattle. I'm predicting a Seahawks win, 28-13 final. What do you think? ...
I know it's hard for Seahawk fans to understand, but it's kind of boring being around the Hawks these days. Before you jump all over me, let me explain a few things. Boring doesn't mean they're not a fun team to be around. And I'm not knocking the Hawks - just the opposite. The Hawks are so good you know they're going to win, so we're not waiting for a meltdown late in the game. They have great chemistry in the locker room, so we're not talking about off-field distractions. They're very talented, so we're not talking about what they should have done in the draft. The media thrives on a little controversy or a few good subplots to get from Sunday to Sunday. But this team is so good and so focused we know what the story is going to be before we hear from Mike Holmgren or Shaun Alexander. It's a good problem to have. It certainly is fun being in Kirkland during the week when everyone is joking around. And it's great after a game when the team is celebrating. But forgive the mundane storylines during the week. Sometimes boring is good. ...Seahawk fans: DO stop and smell these roses, but while sniffing, don't close your eyes. This group has never won a playoff game. Six of their wins are against their dainty division foes. And note what has happened against the above average quarterback. ...Brock Talk #1: Secondary struggles A rough day for the Seahawk secondary was a bit to be expected as new pieces were worked in, and Herndon knocked some rust off. The secondary will be a huge key to playoff success, and the defensive staff has to be excited to get Dyson and Trufant back and fully healthy for that playoff push. A big key for that secondary will be the play of the guys up front and the noise of the 12th fan at Quest. More QB pressure, more fan noise, more healthy experienced veterans will help a secondary gain some confidence. ...
