| December 2005"What's the biggest difference in this year's team compared to last year?" That question gets asked almost every week out at Seahawks headquarters. Sometimes the players say it's the defense, or the experience level, but more than half the time it's an improved attitude. The players will never call-out a teammate or a former teammate when talking to the media, but it's become very clear that last year the Hawks were dealing with too many distractions. Guys like Koren Robinson who had personal problems that affected their performance. Guys like Cheike Okeafor who stayed on an island, and never really developed comraidere with his teammates. The Hawks cleaned house and got rid of all the distractions, and they're 14-2. This year's team doesn't play for individual glory, they're focused on one goal. They can say what they want about their former teammates, but that just makes it more obvious there was a problem last year. Attitude counts, look how far it's gotten the Hawks this year. ...Coach Holmgren just wrapped up his Wednesday press conference, and he said starters like Shaun Alexander will play this weekend in Green Bay -- basically a meaningless game for the Hawks. "We are going to substitute pretty liberally in the game," Holmgren said. "How long they play, it will be a little bit of a feel thing for me." Meanwhile, injured cornerbacks Andre Dyson and Marcus Trufant will not make the trip so they can recover in time for the first playoff game. ...Get your speed dial ready. Tickets for the NFC divisional game go on sale on the 9th beginning at 10 a.m. "Tickets are limited and are expected to sell out within the first 30 minutes," warns Seahawks.com. ...
Lots of good post-game video clips in this story, from Coach Holmgren, Shaun Alexander, Walter Jones to Craig Terrill. ...
After struggling against the Tennessee Titans last weekend, the Seahawks defense has come to play with the #1 seed in the NFC on the line. Sure, the Colts have their back-up Jim Sorgi in the game, but not even Peyton Manning could get the ball into the end zone in the 1st quarter. The defense is key if the Seahawks have any hopes of making a Super Bowl trip to Detroit. We all know the Hawks offense is good, but the defense will be the ones who will need to shut down Tiki Barber, Steve Smith and the rest of the NFC offensive foes out there. This is it, the top two teams in the NFL. The Seahawks vs. the Colts game is now underway. This is an open thread, so leave your comments below as the game progresses... ...While Theismann says Alexander is probably the most deserving person, he writes on ESPN.com that he thinks Tiki Barber will win it because of the "lack of publicity." How's that for another kick in the pants for a team that seems to get no respect for how well it's doing this year? ...
Colts coach Tony Dungy's 18-year-old son was found dead this morning in his Tampa Bay apartment. No foul play is suspected, but a cause of death won't be announced pending an autopsy, said Vida Morgan, a secretary in the Hillsborough County sheriff's office. The Colts are at Seattle on Saturday. ...Well, we wanted more, but five selections ties for second-most in Seattle's 30-year history: Shaun Alexander, Matt Hasselbeck, Walter Jones, Steve Hutchinson and first-timer Mack Strong. Meanwhile -- you guessed it -- the Colts lead the way with seven Pro Bowlers this season. ...
So, the fan portion of the pro-bowl balloting is over. Shaun Alexander received the second most votes next to Peyton Manning. But he's the only Seahawk to even make the list. Now I realize the players and coaches also get a say, and fan voting accounts for just a third of the vote, but give me a break. What about Matt Hasselbeck? And Walter Jones should be a gimme vote, name a better tackle in the league. Part of the problem is that fans weren't even given the option of voting for most of the Hawks. Rookie Linebacker Lofa Tatupu wasn't on the list of potential Pro-Bowl candiates, but Punter Chris Kluwe was - are you kidding me? I know the candidates are choosen before the season starts, and before we really know who's going to have a breakout year. But it's somewhat embarrassing that - out of the handful of Seahawks on that list - only Shaun Alexander received enough votes to crack the top 10 leading vote getters. ...Brock Chalk Talk #1: Hawk Secondary a tough day The boys in the secondary had a tough one in Nashville. Man defense, zone defense, play action pass, you name it, Norm Chow and the Titans took advantage of it. Remember, Herndon and Dyson are likely out a few more weeks, so the back-ups are going to have to step it up into the play-offs. More pressure up front would help, and that noisy 12th man wouldn't hurt either. ...
(Game in progress) After taking a 14-0 lead, I'm a little worried right now about the Seahawks defense. The hawks "d" is not looking like the defense we've been seeing all season long. The hawks red zone defense is so far 0 for 2 and the hawks are still looking for their first sack. The Titans are marching and the hawks offense seems a little timid after rolling in the 1st quarter. The defense needs to step things up, the offense needs to get back on track and Egan needs to focus on the Seahawks game and not the Colts-Chargers game. ...(Game in progress) This Seahawks game could get real ugly, real fast, but that's good news for the Hawks and their fans. Seattle is showing why they're not only one of the teams to beat in the NFC, but the NFL. Matt Hasselbeck continues to showcase the top offense in the NFL by finding all of his targets. If your one of those fans that thought the return of Darrell Jackson would hamper the hawks team chemistry, I hope your watching this game. Just one more target for Matt to throw to. Forget the Sports Illustrated Jinx, Shaun Alexander is proving he's the MVP of the NFL and the Hawks are proving they have all the makings to head to Detroit for the Super Bowl. If your not aboard the Seahawks express, you better jump on the train soon! ...When: Seattle (11-2) at Tennessee Titans (4-9), 10 a.m. Guess who made the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated? And we don't want to hear any talk about the SI jinx. ...The Seahawks have had their share of bad calls go against them this season. Fortunately, they've had the talent to overcome them. The Lions, however, do not have that kind of talent, and they flat-out got victimized last night in Green Bay. Any offensive penalty in the end zone, is an automatic safety. The refs say a holding penalty in the final minutes didn't happen in the end zone, but it was clear to the three guys in the broadcast booth and most watching at home, the holding did take place in the end zone. It should have been a safety, and that safety would have broken a 13-13 tie. Lions would have won the game, 15-13... ...Brock talk #1: Hasselbeck gets time to shine 21/25, 226 yards, 4 touchdowns, Matt finally got his chance to light up the stat sheet. Give Shaun Alexander his due, 1,496 yards and 23 TD's on the year, but Hasselbeck has been the consumate leader this season. Ask Mike Holmgren who his MVP has been this year, and I'd be shocked if he wouldn't tip his hat to #8. His game management, his audibles, his checks, and now big numbers, Matt is going to have a good time in Hawaii in the Pro Bowl. ...
At 10-and-2, the Seahawks are rolling along. The only real challenge in their final two games will be Indianapolis on Christmas Eve. That said, let's look ahead to challengers that could keep the Hawks from reaching the Super Bowl. The Chicago Bears have a tremendous defense, but absolutely ZERO offense. The Bears will go as far as their defense will take them. If they fall behind a team like the Hawks that can put a team in a hole in a hurry, the Bears will have no chance staging a comeback with their brutal offense... ...You know what amazes me most about the Seahawks 42-0 blowout? Seattle still can't catch a break with the national media. I lost track of the number of times Al Michaels and John Madden made reference to a weak or depleted Philadelphia team, refusing to give the Hawks the respect they deserve. For crying out loud its the biggest shutout in MNF history. They didn't just squeak by, the Seahawks made a statement. Now they're on the front page of every dot-com page; you can bet most sports departments around the country ran their highlights; and fans on the East Coast can't blame ignorance for not knowing about the Seahawks. I know the Hawks don't mind flying under the radar, but it's about time for them to get the attention they deserve. You don't get lucky and beat a team 42-0. ...
Forecasters say the Philadelphia area could see 5 inches of snow tonight, just in time for the Monday Night showdown between the Seahawks and Eagles. "Not the regular stuff," predicts Philly.com. "The first big snowstorm of the year." This ought to be interesting. (By the way, NorthWest Cable News will not air Fone Zone tonight following the game, but we'll be blogging...) ...With the St. Louis Rams' loss to the Washington Redskins this weekend, the 9-2 Seahawks have now clinched their division for the second straight season. ... |
