It's good to be a Green Bay AND Seahawks fan

1:00 PM Mon, Oct 31, 2005 |

At least I have one team to root for this year - this former Wisconsonite is turning Seahawks blue over the Packers' dive into the cellar. A lot of people, me included, had really high hopes Mike Holmgren would work the same magic on Seattle he did on the Packers. Here's hoping this will finally be the year that happens here!

Report: Seahawks and Alexander talk new contract

9:29 AM Mon, Oct 31, 2005 |

Cross your fingers, FoxSports.com is reporting that the Seahawks and Shaun Alexander have started the first round of contract negotiations. "The two offers, however, were a little extreme on both sides, with Seattle's too low and the player's request too high. The two are expected to talk again within the next 24 to 48 hours in order to see if either side is truly serious," reports Jay Glazer. The News Tribune's Mike Sando followed up with an interview with Seahawks president Tim Ruskell. "We’re talking with [Alexander’s] representatives, and if we could work out something long term at this point of the season, that would be great. If we can’t, we won’t give up on it," Ruskell said. "It’s certainly not going to be easy."

Road to division title 'fairly easy'

9:25 AM Mon, Oct 31, 2005 |

Echoing in part of what KING 5's Paul Silvi blogged last week, Seattle Times reporter Chris Cluff maps out the rest of the regular season for the Seahawks and concludes they have a good chance of wrapping up the NFC West championship over the next three weeks.

Holmgren raises red flag on penalties

2:04 PM Wed, Oct 26, 2005 |

If you've noticed more penalty flags flying through the air this season, you're not alone. Seattle Times reporter Chris Cluff writes about how Coach Mike Holmgren is joining a growing list of coaches who are upset over the jump in penalties this year. "We have never been a hugely penalized team," said Holmgren. "This year we have more, particularly in the holding area." Numbers don't lie. The league is averaging 15.5 assessed penalties per game, up from 14 at the end of last season.

Josh Brown named player of the week

1:56 PM Wed, Oct 26, 2005 |

The NFL named the Hawks kicker the NFC Specials Teams Player of the Week for nailing the game-winning field goal in the Cowboys game. Last week, Shaun Alexander was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. And the week before, Matt Hasselbeck won the Offensive Player of the Week.

Stop me if you've heard this before

2:58 PM Tue, Oct 25, 2005 |

Seahawk fans have fun, get excited. Your team did what they haven't done in years: found a way to WIN instead of inventing yet another way to LOSE a big game. Even THEY were surprised (as you could see by their reaction). But... we've been here before. BEWARE! Be gleeful, not giddy, and realize reality. They still have a tough time on the road. And fast starts haven't meant fast finishes in the past. Can they sustain that lovin' feelin'? I have my doubts. The Kenny Hamlin/Darrell Jackson/Bobby Engram injuries could be trouble.

Will Hawks lose momentum in break?

1:45 PM Tue, Oct 25, 2005 |

The Seahawks are off for the week, and Chad raises a good point in the comments. "We are horrible coming off of the bye," he writes. Sure enough, the Seahawks are 3-12 in games played after byes, reports Dave Boling in The News Tribune. And Holmgren has never coached the Seahawks to a win after a bye, losing all six times. "Lets hope this year will be different," Chad says.

Seahawks have bigger goals in mind

12:03 AM Tue, Oct 25, 2005 |

After listening to the Seahawks the day after their big win, it's clear these guys have bigger goals in mind than beating the Cowboys and earning a week off. They have the second best record in the NFC at 5-and-2, and their next three games are very winnable - at Arizona, home against the Rams, and at hapless San Francisco. 8-and-2? Definitely within reach before a home game with the Giants, and a trip to Philly...

Hawks get a rare vacation

12:01 AM Tue, Oct 25, 2005 |

The Seahawks are getting a rare, in-season vacation over the next six days. Coach Holmgren said the only other time he has done that in his 14 years as an NFL coach was in 1996 with Green Bay. His Packers returned to win the Super Bowl. Hmmmm.

The Seahawks story gets better

7:26 PM Mon, Oct 24, 2005 |

"Special players make special plays." I've heard it since I started covering the NFL 10 years ago. In Seattle its a little different. Here, special people make special plays. Jordan Babineaux has made 2 of the biggest plays this year for the 'Hawks: the late fumble recovery to seal Seattle's win in St. Louis and Sunday's interception (pictured) to set up Josh Brown's game winning field goal. I've talked to Jordan after both plays and he doesn't say much about himself. But he does light up when he talks about going home to Port Arthur, Texas, during the 'Hawks bye week...

Hawks defense deserves more credit

4:31 PM Mon, Oct 24, 2005 |

Certainly Seattle's win against Dallas was one of the best finishes in Hawks history, but I don't think the Hawks defense got as much credit as it deserved. The Hawks defense kept them in the game. Seattle exploited the weak left side of the Cowboys line, recording 5 sacks on Drew Bledsoe...

Best Hawks game ever

4:30 PM Mon, Oct 24, 2005 |

Someone at work asked me today why I still had my voice after the Sunday's big Seahawks win against Dallas. I told them it was because I spent all but the last 40 seconds of the game sitting quietly and miserably in the rain with my arms folded across my chest, watching the game at Qwest Field.
But I quickly showed off my new souvenir from what my husband and I call the "Best Hawks Game Ever." I rolled up my pantleg to show off the large bruise on my knee that I got from nailing the cupholder, jumping up and down after Babineaux's interception. By the time Josh Brown made the game-winning field goal, my yelps of pain turned to screams of joy...

'I can't even watch this'

3:41 PM Mon, Oct 24, 2005 |

In a press conference today, Coach Mike Holmgren said he wanted to look the other way as Josh Brown prepared to kick the winning field goal. "I was facing away from it," he said. "And they said, 'Coach you gotta watch. You gotta watch.' So I turned around." Watch the video as Holmgren explains his reactions to the game-winning kick.

Seahawks 'feeling different now'

2:13 PM Mon, Oct 24, 2005 |

The Seattle Times' Steve Kelley puts Sunday's big win into perspective. "It was a win that told a team, a city and a nation full of skeptics that these Seahawks were different," he writes. "These are the wins that break the cycle. Championship teams win these games on their way into January."

Video: Seahawks vs. Cowboys

8:47 PM Sun, Oct 23, 2005 |

"I'm freaking out!" exclaimed Josh Brown as he walked off the field as Qwest Field roars in the wake of his game-winning field goal. That's just some of the video in this clip of postgame interviews. Plus, watch Mike Holmgren's press conference after the game.

Big victory over Cowboys. Now what?

7:08 PM Sun, Oct 23, 2005 |

Over the last couple of years, the Seahawks have been on the losing end of these close games. Winning this time is great and it puts the team on an emotional high. How the team handles the success will say just as much as winning...
