Lambeau Mystique? Think again...
There are plenty of reasons Lambeau Field during the playoffs was feared by many in the NFL. As someone who has covered games there on a regular basis, I can tell you, those days are over and have been for a while.
During this week you'll hear plenty about the mystique of Lambeau Field and how the "frozen tundra" will yield no mercy to opposing teams or players.
During my travels in this line of work I spent 3 wonderful years in Wisconsin where I covered the Packers on a regular basis. After a while I noticed there was a common belief among the people of Packerland that the team was unbeatable at home. In truth, they had been for the most part since Mike Holmgren took over as Head Coach in 1992, but this belief had morphed into a sort of arrogance on the part of the Packer fans and organization.
This was reinforced in 2002 when Green Bay finished 8-0 at home in the regular season. Then Michael Vick came to town on a cold snow flurry filled night and sent the Green and Gold home early. In fact, the Falcons had narrowly lost way back in week one at Lambeau with temperatures in the high 90's.
Seahawk veterans are not strangers to Lambeau Field. The Seahawks have made five trips in the last five seasons when you include preseason, regular season, and postseason games. That's more than any other stadium outside the NFC West. And it's not just the players who've been on the Seattle roster since 2003.
Patrick Kerney was there for both Atlanta games in 2002, logging a sack and 7 tackles in the September meeting, then a sack and forced fumble in the playoff game.
Deon Grant was a member of the Panthers in 2002 and his team only lost by a field goal. In 2004, Grant returned to Lambeau with Jacksonville, and intercepted a Brett Favre pass on the way to a win for the Jaguars.
Brian Russell visited Lambeau with the Browns in 2005 collecting a pair of tackles and a win for Cleveland. Just in case the Hawks get thin at Safety, former Chicago Bear Mike Green has played at Lambeau six times in his career and intercepted a Favre pass once.
We hear a lot about "experience" in the NFL and who has the most of it. The Seattle Seahawks players have more experience playing at Lambeau than any team outside of the NFC North. Count on it to be a factor this Saturday.
Comments
Mike,Will the hawks ever go after a good tight end who can actually catch the ball? Also will we be looking to deal Dieon Branch since he can't seem to stay healthy to save his life?
