Steelers shut out Seahawks

Poor running and awful offense dooms the Seahawks as the team gets outplayed by the Steelers. Final score, Seahawks 0 Steelers 21. Ouch. If you want to pour some salt into the wound, the game blog is below. The defense worked hard, but the offense coughed up an ugly one. The Hawks get no points on the board for the first time, according to Fox, since 2000.

The Steeler's secondary is doing a great job in the first quarter, obviously frustrating Matt. The Hawk's O-line, however, is giving the QB tons of time to throw. Five punts so far.

Deion Branch was just carted off the sideline. Sprained foot.

Both defenses are playing out of their minds. Peterson's sack of Big Ben forces yet another punt. The TNT is reporting Mack Strong is out with a stinger and is questionable to return.

Trufant slipped on the turf, Heath Miller scores. Hawks 0, Steelers 7.

At face value Matt seems to be forcing the game, trying to do too much. The interception was costly. At halftime, Hawks 0, Steelers 7.

Fox is reporting Deion Branch's X-rays came back negative, thankfully.

How costly is that interception to end the half now? Davenport in for the TD, after the Hawks give up third and long, again and again. Hawks 0, Steelers 14. 4:43 in the third quarter and the offense has yet to touch the ball.

End of the third, the Seahawks offense had one possession. Three and out. Hats off to the Hawks D.

Davenport off the right side. Hawks' defense out of steam. In the fourth quarter Hawks 0, Steelers 21.

Seahawks get the ball back and go three and out, yet again.

Steelers punt. Seneca Wallace in at QB. Hawks go three and out.

Ugly. Game over, thankfully.

Comments

very disappointing first half. bad time management on that last drive. Hasselbeck is only 11/21, much less accurate than usual. Alexander is 8/15, running his new "pause and fall over" style. time for a second half comeback.

Is Mike Holmgren opposed to timeouts?

Very Disappointing is right. How about we use a time out. Once again I feel like we ran into the locker with our tails between our legs.

I was disappointed in the first half as well. Whatever happened to good clock management? We have three time outs at our disposal, and we DON'T USE THEM???!! WTF??!!

BTW, Second half is not looking any better. If the Seahawks don't pull their heads out of their butts, it's only going to get even uglier.

The only way this game went to the Stealers is that in the 3rd qtr the stealers were at 2nd and 1 after a penalty and that made it 2nd and 11 right?..... However, the game became 1st and ten and now the stealers are winning.
Can anyone tell me how this happened?

One positive. At least the Seahawks suited up.

They should have stayed home and saved the jet fuel.

Watching Seahawks/Steelers game today. This game has really shown the Seahwaks for what they are ( or not): They're not super bowl material. They may not even be playoff material. Until the hawks get a "decent" offensive line (their O line stinks) and give the team a running game, the hawks will not go far this year. You can't win every game on passing alone, no matter how good your defense is. Brock Huard is always giving it up for the effort Sean makes, but it's just a dream. They don't have a running game anyway, so why put him in there? Take sean out and let him heal. Start planning for next year. Thankfully, the NFC west is lousy overall.

Shaun needs to go. Is it really the wrist? Or the fact he's lost his edge? Either way, he's a low-end running back compared to others in the NFL today, and we're paying him a small fortune.

We put all our eggs in the passing basket, and the Steelers secondary shut us down. That's when Shaun must step up, and he didn't. Again.

Little Birdie fans - QUESTIONS? Who are you going to blame now? The cheerleaders? The weather? The refs again? You got spanked just like in the SB...face the Steelers (you remember them, Super Bowl champs) SPANKED you boys into submission!! Shaun who? Hassleback who? You'd be better off with the actor Hasselbeck...you suck!!

Gosh, Mike, you really told us! You must be a really cool guy!

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say their season is done just yet. Yeah, it sucks Seattle lost today, but it's still early in the season, so I wouldn't be writing them off just yet. Also, I don't see Seattle quitting on this season just yet either. They know there's still a lot of games to be played, this is only one game, it is not time to panic.

I agree with Joe,Shaun needs to go!From what I've seen so far this season every other running back in the league is 10 times better than shaun, once again he fell down with barely getting touched and were paying him how much, bench him and see how he likes watching the game, the guys pathetic..calls his injury a boo boo give me a break..

Shaun is certainly not the whole problem, but I don't think there's much doubt he's not what he was and is declining fast. Not enough of a threat to open up the passing game.

Very disappointing, mostly because the offense was not able to get going except for on the last drive of the first half, and on that drive somebody outlawed timeouts. I'd say the first half defense was a positive, but they couldn't carry it through to the second half.

Kevin, the penalty occurred downfield, and thus was enforced from the point of the foul, not the line of scrimmage.

Mr Lyman, I don't know how you've decided one game shows what a team is or isn't. The offensive line does not stink: they gave great protection to Matt the whole game. I would, however, agree that they really need to work at helping the run game.

I don't think Shaun needs to go, I just think that we need to follow in the footsteps the rest of the NFL and pick up another RB. Shaun has talent, but as everybody loves to point out, he doesn't have the power to deal with the fact that the offensive line can't open up holes.

Mike, allow me to be the first one to blame ourselves. And allow me to be the second one to compliment your absolute coolness.

I agree with everyone that Shaun has to go. He didn't produce last year and sure hasn't produced this year. I think he must have practiced on a Slip 'n Slide the last two preseaons, it seems as soon as someone breaths on him he falls down! He's not worth the money and I'd trade him for ANY other starting (and most back-up) backs in the NFL. Shaun sucks!!!

how about i start supporting the Patriots so i don't get upset like this frequently?

Replying to "him." Seahawks bad offensive line didn't start today. They're not bad every single week, that's correct. But to get to the super bowl and win it, your offensive line has to be good EVERY week. Hawks O line problems go back to last year. They've had up and down weeks since the season started. That's what people call "mediocre." That is not super bowl verbage. Look at last week. Even being injured, when given opportunities by the O line, Alexander didn't do too bad. RB's, injured or not, can't perform magic if the O line is playing like a bunch of morons. On another note, what is the status of D. Branch? Another wide receiver down? I saw him leave but he came back and didn't look too bad on the sidelines-just wondering what his status is. I guess it could be worse. We could be St. Louis Rams fans.. ... barf!..

Did you hear Shaun's interview on KIRO radio a minute ago? Very annoying. The guy's a flake.

seriously
if you're o-line isn't able to create holes, put in the guy who doesn't need holes all the time like shaun does-mo morris. he's way faster than shaun, he can reverse direction; shaun cannot because he just isn't fast enough.

John Lyman-

Last I heard Branch has a strained or sprained foot, I cannot remember which. Good news is the x-rays were negative so hopefully a couple rest days and he'll be back at it. We all know the Hawks NEED him to be healthy to pick up the slack.

I think the hardest I've seen Shaun run with enthusiasm, is when he comes out of the tunnel at Quest Field. Time for a CHANGE!!

I don't believe that Shaun Alexander needs to go. I do, however, believe that he needs to sit out a couple of weeks and get that wrist healed, and let Maurice Morris get in there and get some playing time.

Hey Mike, your Steelers played a hell of a game. They deserved the win. At the end of the day, it's not about the refs (they did a good job officiating the game, by the way). It's not about the weather, and it certainly is not about the cheerleaders. Seattle just got outplayed and beaten. PERIOD.

"PERIOD."

Isn't that redundant?

I don't think it's the wrist for Shaun. A lot of people are always making excuses for his VERY POOR play the last couple of season. Bottom line is: he needs to either become the back-up or sit completely. He's too complacient, he just got his big pay day and is laughing all the way to the bank. If you're not gonna give it your all, which he doesn't, make room for someone that will. And the coaching staff needs to see that as well.

Seriously....as a coach of pee-wee football, we teach the backs to keep their feet moving, until their feet aren't under them anymore. Alexander is hitting defenders and falling. Without Alexander causing the linebackers and safeties to cheat up...they're free to play pass. Even the slowest linebackers can react to the way Alexander is running right now.

That being said, the line wasn't great, the passing was so-so (due to lack of running game) and the poor defense was on the field most of the game. They played a heck of a game, despite being wore out.

What the heck was with that weather? It's cold and wet here, and my lights are about to go out. 80 plus degrees? Jeez.

i haven't saw a GOOD Seahawk game since the early 80's.... anyone remember Curt Warner, Steve Largent, Craig, Skansi and those guys? i miss the Ricky Watters style of running...smashmouth ground CHUCK style of play. that was when the game meant something and not for ENTERTAINMENT ONLY and the $$$$$$.

Well not only was it inept play calling on the offence but why would u rush only 3 with a 3rd and 15,17 bring the whole house they owned us in the shallow passes and only rushing 3 ur giving big ben plenty to think about where he wants to put the ball and as for our running game it has been terrible in the last 3 games I hate to say this but maybe seattle needs to shop for a new rb or send a message to alexander and light a fire under him just mt 2 cents now i have to face all the pitt fans at work tuesday ugh!!!

Senior Hawker, not only can you not conjugate, you are jaded. The game has always been for entertainment and that does mean something!

Hey shigeolincoln, here............................ Use those periods liberally dude.

Booza if u call what i saw today entertaining ur seriously messed up in the head, but then maybe ur a Steeler fan and that would explain ur comment. if ur a Hawk fan and u think this was a great game that explains ur name BOOZA !!

That was probably the worst game I have seen in a long time. No intensity, at all from the offense. I agree with a lot of the comments about Alexander, but he doesn't deserve all the blame. Look at the play calling, and the passing. Alexander, Hasselbeck, and Holmgren lost this game. The fire wasn't there at all, Matt complaining it's too hot, Branch arguing with a fan. What happened this week in practice? They win big against the 49ers and they think they have to show up and win. I'm still a die-hard and they better change something against the Saints or they will be 3-3. Bench Alexander, put in Mo. That's all I have to say about that!!!

Senior Hawker, yep, you nailed me!

I blame it on the refs. Did you see the officiating? Every time the Steelers made it into the end zone, the refs signalled TOUCHDOWN!!! How dare they! ;)

If Matt was less worried about his pattern baldness and more worried about throwing the ball more precisely, just perhaps the hawks would have a chance to get to the post season. Further, his penchant for audibles that result in broken plays, delay of game and loss of critical yards isn't very impressive. Between Holmgren and Hasselbeck the only fans that can't see the next play coming are currently in a coma, much like our team.

You can really tell the fair weather support the Hawks get from their "fans". How about keeping positive for the season itself and not throwing these guys in the garbage so early? You think it was easy being a Patriots fan during the 70's and 80's when they had a bad offense and defense but one of the best quarterbacks of the day, Old Steve Grogan?

Despite this game, keep your heads up and stand by our team! Brush this one off Mike and crew and keep going!

For all of you fair weather Seattle Seahawks fans, you need to shut your mouths and choose some other team. A true fan doesn't jump ship when the going gets a little rough. Your all pathetic and should just admit that your spineless cowards. It was a bad game, all around and we got beat. Any given Sunday it could happen. To Mike and all of the other rude and classless fans of the Pittsburg Steelers, you can kiss a real Seahawks fans fourth point of contact(that's my ass to all you non-military people). To all of the Steeler fans that do have an ounce of class, congradulations on kicking us around the field yesterday. Next week is a new week, were still in this and last last time I checked, the season was 16 games long. Again, for all of you fair weather fans of the Hawks, your the worst kind of people--truly deplorable and I wouldn't spit on any of you if you were on fire. None of us could come close to putting on that uniform, so before you play Monday morning quarterback, you should think long and hard about that and do a reality check. GO SEAHAWKS!!!!

Hey Morrell,

I have the greatest respect for our military servicemen and servicewomen. You guys have done a wonderful job protecting us, but for the Hawks, it was one of the lousiest game ever. Losing is okay, if we fight like winners, but to lose like losers is pathetic. The entire offense should be bench for next week’s game for their lack of passion and intensity. There is no excuse for losing they way they lost, please don’t blame the temperature, crowd noise, etc, blame yourself…

HEY SEAHAWK FANS DONT GIVE UP ON YOUR TEAM,YOUR 3-2 AND ALOT OF FOOTBALL LEFT YOU WILL WIN YOUR DIVISION
AND MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.ONE GAME WILL NOT DECIDE YOUR SEASON,GOOD LUCK DOWN THE ROAD.

Chawks,
Thank you. Yes, our offence was horrible and didn't give our defence a chance. However, if you re-read my blog, I wasn't making any excuses. I simply wrote that on any given Sunday, it could happen. Every team in the NFL is striving for the same goal each week, a win. The Seahawks didn't have it yesterday, they were lacking in motivation and it showed. At least on offencesive side of the ball anyways. The Steelers took advantage of that, utilized it, outplayed us and wore out the defence. What makes me want to vomit though, are the people who call themselves fans and then rip on the team they claim to support. You don't quit on people because they make mistakes or have a bad game! You suck it up and drive on! Cowards are the ones who quit, complain and judge without any right to do so! We all sit and watch from the sidelines or via TV with little to no real experience, other than some High School football memories. How can ANY of us be so bold as to truly judge them? We can not and should not in this case. Yes, constructive criticism is good, but there needs to be a SOLUTION brought to the table, not just moans and groans. Seattle got beat yesterday by a team that wanted it more and was better prepaired. Furthermore, Pittsburg is damn good team, we cannot take that away from them. Whether you love them or hate them, we have to admit that. So, Seattle should implament the following: They need to get up and dust themselves off. Then they need to orientate themselves and get a game plan together for the New Orleans Saints. Finally, they need to put the loss behind them and move forward. I apologize if I'm a little rough with my choice of words, but I choose to be straight forward and call it like it is. If those words offended anyone, then they are probably the ones whom I am referring to as cowards and the like. I've always said, if the shoe fits....then WEAR IT!! GO SEAHAWKS!!!!

Hey Morrell, the last time you checked must've been some time ago. The season is 17 weeks long ya big Allstar. Oh, you said constructive criticism is good, here is some for you... It's spelled 'Congratulations' with a T not a D, and offense with an S not a C. Same with defense. 'Prepared' not 'prepaired.' 'Implement' not 'implament.' There ya go big boy! Learning is fun!

The season is 17 weeks long, but each team plays 16 GAMES!

Sandy, thank you for the corrections. For the record though, I'm training for a mission and on the move quite a bit, in a military vehichle. If I wronged you by forgetting to hit spell/grammar check during some brief down time, I apologize. Shame on me for multitasking, I should be more focused on the target ahead. Or rather, shame on you for missing the point altogether.

Morrell, thank you for your comments. I for one am sticking with the Seahawks through thick and thin (and believe me, if you have been a fan as long as I have - over 23 years - then you know there have been lots of thick and thin through their history).

Hey Don, I saw your comment regarding my previous post. I apologize if my apparent lack of grammatical prowess irritated you, but I was trying to make a point to Mike that Seattle's loss to the Steelers had absolutely nothing to do with the weather, the cheerleaders (although the Steelers are one of the few teams in the NFL that do not have cheerleaders), or the refs. Seattle just got beat by the better team yesterday. That's all.

Bring on the Saints (or are they the Ain'ts?). GO SEAHAWKS!

I'm shipping out tonight and I may not be back for some time. I am not a perfect man I want to thank the friends I have found here for their support. I just need to pack for my super secret mission now. Wish me luck. Now if I can just find my compass.

I'd just like to say to all the seachicken fans who still think SB XL was rigged:
Now will you stop crying?

A statement in a previous blog from our illustrious, not-so-humble military man morrell claims EVERYBODY who watched SB XL except Steeler fans thought the officiating was rigged. On the contrary, only seachicken fans see it that way. In fact, no seachicken fan remembers that the Steelers failed to get a first down until halfway into the second quarter due to poor officiating. Nor does any seachicken fan recall that besides Big Ben's questionable TD which Holmgren could have challenged, there were TWO undisputed TDs that the chickens couldn't stop.

Best of luck morrell in your adventure. I myself, a Steelers fan, will not be moving back to PGH. You see, the military sends alot of people to this neck of the woods, and I'm one of them.

To steelerfan and who ever falsely impersonated me at 1845 hours last night: What ever, you prove my point. Steeler fans can't admit it but its true none the less. Furthermore, whats this 'not-so-humble BS?" Am I writing or claiming any type of bravado or hero status? No. I merely pointed out that 'sandy' missed the point. Also, to add to that last false post not written by me, who ever posted that is beyond disrespectful and is the kind of person who doesn't have the courage to serve anyone but themselves. Way to go!

Steelerfan: Your team is good, you won. You guys really kicked us around and proved to be the better team Sunday. Happy now? I was merely making a point that many people, not just Seattle fans thought that the game was poorly officiated and that there were several calls that were oddly against the Seahawks. For example, the tackle by Matt H. on the interception return, he was called for block below the waist. Oh well, two years ago--Steelers won. Back to my 'super secret mission'---damn, still can't find my compass. I'm not laughing, but rather saddened that there are people who would mock people who currently serve or who have served. Gee, that takes a lot of courage.

i was at the seahawks game in pittsburgh, i thought they played quite even with the steelers in the first half, have u heard any comments on why Holmgren didn't use any time outs at the end of the half? I thought he should have taken one before the 2 minute warning when the were on 3rd down, the play on which they scored their first touchdown. We ran out of time & threw into the endzone (pick) with 3 timeouts left!!! After the long drive starting the 2nd half we never recovered. Somebody's gotta tell Holmgrem that u cannot save your time outs for another game

Lets face it, we are 'not' a championship team..
Champions come out and win
week after week...

Pats,Colts,Cowboys, etc.

Shaun Alexander'was'
a good player, but
now he isnt even mediocre....
He sees that he cant make it on a run,and folds up like a lawnchair....
His only good runs are holes big enough for even me to run through.
He does "NOT" have the necessary
'speed' to run outside, nor can he always run to the left to get behind Walt Jones, hell that play is so well covered, its laughable, except that its for no gain......send him out for passes, then there is room for him to get at least 5-7 yrds...

Some good speed is like New Orleans Saints runner Reg Bush,or Steelers,
Willie Parker....

Shaun is a very, very likeable guy, but I feel he is all
through. He is all broken up in body it shows when about to be tackled.

Mike Holmgren,as stubborn as he is, wont agree on any of this, but, this from fans and the game results, should say something, and wake him up.

Yet another very bad point about the team lately is Matt Hasselbeck himself.

After watching the field of play very closely against both losses, we were very impressed with both quarterbacks of the Steelers and the Saints, when they threw the ball to their receivers they were bullets, whereas
Hasslebeck was throwing 'floaters'
like an old granny..
Their coverage had all of the time in the world to wrap up our receivers....
He must step up into the pocket, make his decision, and ZIP that ball on the
'numbers' of his receivers..!!!
Get those receivers to come back to him immediately...they are Pro's, and should respond swiftly to him in a tight situation...

Very troubling to see your team get its ass kicked...
maybe to complacent...?????
Lets use more
'screens' and "flea"
flicker passes, and some quarterback draws...and short passes for 6-7 yards
instead of down the field with the bomb...it seldom works with speed burners on the other team...

Holmgren should have some great "quick come back" trick plays when a team has taken the lead from us, to get it back quickly...
To have the lead at all times is very important...
We are not good enough to always make come from behind plays...
We all know losses come this way.!!!
