Weaver on the bubble

6:59 PM Tue, Aug 28, 2007 |

It's been no secret that FB Leonard Weaver has struggled with various things in each of his exhibition appearances this NWCN Training Camp. The third-year back has been inconsistent reading blocks and running through the line, catching the ball out of the backfield, and throwing blocks in pass protection. But the thing is, Weaver has the size, the speed, and the attitude to be the guy to backup Mack Strong. And he's done all that before. The thing is that he must come through on game day.

Thursday, when the Oakland Raiders come to Qwest Field, is a big day for Weaver. It's the fourth and final preseason game, so the veterans won't play much allowing the backup players and guys fighting to make the team one final opportunity to show they deserve a roster spot. Weaver says he expects to play alot and he'll use the game to "prove [himself] and get better at what [I] need to do." He says, "Anytime the coaches trust you with a play it's definitely to see what you can do and see how you can handle it."

He'll definitely be watched closely on Thursday and he knows it...and he knows it's time to get it together and shake this preseason slump. Monday the Hawks trimmed the roster down to 75. Weaver is hoping to hang on when the Hawks cut it 53 on Saturday.
