The old history teacher, Mike Holmgren, insisted today he believes in investigative journalism. But when Holmgren compared KING5's breaking news coverage Tuesday to Watergate, we understood the boss definitely wanted to douse the fire around his quarterback's broken finger. Holmgren has "that way" of looking at you. I knew it when I saw it today as Mr. Holmgren approached me on the practice field. He likes to control the message around his football team. As well as he coaches, he manages the media better. Breaking news about a finger doesn't exactly fit into Mike's plan, so I played along while he talked and I listened. After three decades-plus in coaching, Mike understands we have a job to do, and he helps us do it. His reactions today were all part of that process. Smart, well planned and great "sound" for television. The best reaction came from the Seahawks players. My question was simple, "Which one of your body parts deserves as much coverage as Matt's broken finger?" Chuck Darby shared a big laugh with me, and Jordan Babineaux said "no comment" before he broke into a big laugh and smile. Nobody would touch it. I knew before I asked. Just like Mike Holmgren knew what he would say about Hasselbeck's broken finger long before we asked today.
