Chargers beat the Hawks, 31-20

5:14 PM Sat, Aug 26, 2006 |

The Seahawks are 1-2 in the preseason after the Chargers win in San Diego, 31-20. Despite the fact the Chargers had four turnovers, the Hawks couldn't pull it off, due mostly to a poor frontline defense. "We can't pass protect very well tonight," coach Mike Holmgren said. "That's the whole deal." But the big news of the game is Itula Mili's injury, a knee sprain, which combined with Jerramy Steven's injury makes Seattle vulnerable in the tight end department. A couple photos...

Shaun Alexander jogs in untouched past Marlon McCree on a 9-yard touchdown run.

Seahawks receiver Maurice Mann is drilled in the back by San Diego Chargers' Terrence Kiel while trying to catch a pass in the first quarter. The ball was knocked away and intercepted.

I blogged the game live below...

(11:03) Game over.

(10:57) Chargers score another TD. Now it's 31-20.

(10:51) Ouch. The booth just read this (and it was posted up on the TV screen): "The 12th Man is a registered trademark of Texas A&M University and is used pursuant to a license agreement with the university." Part of the trademark settlement, I would assume.

(10:37) Chargers' Ray Perkins tears through the Hawks defense and scores (a great run). He has 20 carries for 83 yards. Chargers now lead the Hawks, 24-20.

(10:36) Bobby Engram is 33 years old? Incredible. Class act.

(10:26) Bailey talks to Hasselbeck on the sidelines. "We got a little sloppy," Hasselbeck says. Of the Chargers defense, "They have a great front seven, they're very physical, very active.... We just gotta be more crisp in the skilled positions." Bailey asks about Itula Mili, who's out with a knee sprain. "That's the million dollar question," Hasselbeck says. "Or the $210,000 question if you're a rookie."

(10:21) We have to settle for another field goal, but Hawks now lead, 20-17.

(10:18) Wallace sacked twice, hurried on a third play. Chargers are running over our defensive line (not many of which are starters). Wallace is 5 of 10.

(10:13) And then a few plays later, Hawks' Shaunard Harts intercepts the ball after the Chargers tip it up. I'm losing track of all the Chargers turnovers (4 now). Hawks have 2.

(10:10) Morris fumbles on a fourth down surge, and Chargers recover. We can't buy a first down.

(10:05) Julian Peterson just obliterates Perkins in the backfield, nearly for a safety. Peterson also had a big game last week. A great acquisition. Now the booth is talking about his body fat, just 2 percent.

(10:02) Chargers' Cory Withrow (Washington State grad) is talking some trash out there after that holding penalty.

(9:56) Yet... another... Chargers fumble, this time on a kickoff return. But somehow the Chargers recover.

(9:54) Big run by Morris sets up Josh Brown for a field goal, and this time he hits it home (with a different holder). Hawks tie it back up, 17-17.

(9:48) "I don't think we played very well," Holmgren told KING 5's Greg Bailey on the sideline. "They took it to us in the first half. We've gotta learn from games like this." Holmgren also said Hasselbeck is not coming back.

(9:35) Hate to say it, but if it weren't for the three fumbles, the Chargers would be dominating the Hawks on the scoreboard right now.

HALFTIME

(9:31) Josh Brown misses a field goal with just over a minute before the half.

(9:25) Seneca Wallace takes over as QB.

(9:22) 'Bout time! Craig Terrill takes down Davis, who sprouts a fumble (his third of the night), and Darryl Tapp falls on it. First down Hawks.

(9:11) The Chargers have battled back, scoring 17 unanswered points to lead the Hawks 17-14 in the first half.

(9:05) And safety Mike Green has a sprain and is done for the night.

(9:00) Hawks tight end Itula Mili suffered a sprained knee and he's out. Bad news given Jerramy Stevens is on the injured list for another 4-6 weeks.

(8:50) Looks like Alexander is done for the night. Has 6 carries for 25 yards. Meanwhile, Hasselbeck is 8/12 for 56 yards. He started the game 5/6, but the Chargers defense has stepped it up.

(8:44) Turner runs it in on third down. Chargers now 14-14. This high school team is waking up.

(8:41) Yikes. Hasselbeck's first interception of the year, tipped by Shawne Merriman who turns around and snags it down. Then Hamlin called for interference on the long ball. Hold 'em Hawks.

(8:40) Chargers punter Mike Scifres is amazing. 59 yarder and then a 57 yarder.

(8:38) Little attitude on the field with that "fair catch." Love it.

(8:29) What was that? Chargers' Shaun Phillips jumped the snap and sacks Hasselbeck. Refs don't call it.

(8:25) I'd like to take this moment to point out that the Steelers are 0-3 in preseason after losing to Philadelphia 16-7 on Friday.

(8:21) I started trash talking too soon. Chargers drive the field in a matter of moments, and Michael Turner runs it in from 38 yards out. 14-7 Seahawks.

(8:15) Alexander jogs in like it's practice. Another touchdown, we're up 14-0, and there's 11:14 left in the first. Snazzy grab by Bobby Engram the play before. It's like we're playing a high school team.

(8:12) Another bad snap, another fumble, and the Hawks recover on the Chargers' 40. Lots of boos from the crowd. Boo hoo.

(8:07) Whoa! Not even a minute into the game, Chargers QB Philip Rivers fumbles the snap, bobbles the ball in the end zone, and Rocky Bernard picks it up for a Seahawks TD.

(8:00) Just like last week, I'm blogging the game live...

Hate to say it, but turnovers are part of the game, so it doesn't matter if "without them" the Chargers would be way ahead. Reality is, they are fumbling with an inexperienced starting QB and a lot of youth on offense, they are making the mistakes they are likely to make (all though not quite so many) in the regular season. You don't just subtract one part of the game and discount the total TEAM effort out there!

Well, the tight end situation sure isn't good. Ouch. Other than that, (and mind you I'm watching on TV) it seemed like the starting defensive ends were having a hard time shutting down the run. But it is only preseason.
