Starters will play in Green Bay

2:39 PM Wed, Dec 28, 2005 |

Coach Holmgren just wrapped up his Wednesday press conference, and he said starters like Shaun Alexander will play this weekend in Green Bay -- basically a meaningless game for the Hawks. "We are going to substitute pretty liberally in the game," Holmgren said. "How long they play, it will be a little bit of a feel thing for me." Meanwhile, injured cornerbacks Andre Dyson and Marcus Trufant will not make the trip so they can recover in time for the first playoff game.

Very good. I was hoping they wouldn't make the mistake of loosing momentum. I know protecting players from injury is important, but so is the feeling of winning. Going into the playoffs with a 12 game win streak would be much better. Though I wonder if Holmgren wants to embarrass an already embarrassed 3 and 12 Green Bay team in which he used to coach. This likely could be Favre's last game. Then again, Green Bay is in competition for Bush, aren't they?

Also on topic...

Currently ESPN is having a poll with the question, "Would it be ethically wrong for the Seahawks to bench their starters against the Packers." The results amazed me.

I would really like to see the starters play for a little while. It's important to them in the fact that they keep up with the momentum. I would love to see Shaun Alexander get his record touchdown right away and then sit back and relax. There is still lots of football ahead for these guys, so don't feel slighted if Holmgren holds out some of these players. You WILL be seeing them again soon.

I'm glad to hear that the starters will be playing against Green Bay. At least we will see a bit of a head to head matchup between Hasselbeck and Favre. I hope Shaun Alexander gets at least one more touchdown run in before the post season.

It's just my opinion but I really don't think it matters if they play the starters or not because the game means nothing. However, I feel that Shaun Alexander should be allowed to get the rushing record and then pull him so he can be rested for the playoffs. If I were the coach I'd do it that way. I have been following the Hawks on their website daily for the past 7 years and am a religious Seahawks buff. I know we'll do the right thing and still have the starters ready to go for the playoffs.

I agree. Whether to play the Seahawk's starters at Green Bay isn't an ethical dilemma (excepting Shaun who deserves the chance to make history). It's all strategy. The real ethical dilemma that ESPN should pose, is whether or not it would be right for the Texans to bench THEIR starters. Draft, anyone?

Go Shaun!

Shaun needs 54 yards to win the rushing title and 1 TD to have the TD record! Go Shaun! The line should play hard and they should get him the ball a ton in the 1st and 2nd quarters, then be done by half, and let the young guys play the second half! Shaun avoids injury by running out of bounds and keeps from getting hit hard by using his stiff arm well. He is both durable and savvy, so let him go for it!
