NFL admits referee mistakes!

In a rare move, the NFL has admitted that referee Larry Nemmers erred Sunday on two of the Giants' touchdowns against the Hawks, reports the Associated Press. The NFL said the catches by Jeremy Shockey and Amani Toomer should not have been ruled completions. Shockey was hit hard and dropped the ball in the end zone. And one of Toomer's feet did not land in bounds. (I can hear all the "I told you so's" out there.) As for the rare NFL admission, it doesn't hurt that Coach Holmgren is on the NFL competition committee that oversees rules and game operations.

simply amazing. and what's going to happen to Nemmers?

Nothing, there is no real accountability in the NFL for refs who blow wrong calls. Even two major ones like this in the same game. You would think the replay refs would be held to a high standard of understanding what the rules are, but it's clear they are not.

We were talking about how those two touchdowns should have been overturned in another part of this blog. It looks like we weren't the only ones who thought so. I'm glad they admitted their mistakes and hopefully this will take away the, "Seahawks got lucky," tag off of all of the headlines and put something a little more deserving of the best team in the NFC.

absolutely ridiculous! the refs practically give the game to the giants and they still lose! yet all the national media is saying the seahawks got lucky?! i'm so sick of the national media hating on the seahawks. why does everone not respect the hawks?! at least the fone zone staff knows better.

the seahawks actually looked ok sunday and considering the refs blew two key calls, their win is even more impressive. still, its the dolphins all the way!

I just found this on the NFL's website.

Now they are taking back the fact that they had bad calls on those two TDs.

Whether the NFL did or didn't admit that the officiating crew made those errors, I don't think Shockeys catch was a TD. Seattle is ALWAYS on the wrong end of close calls/ coaches challenges and booth reviews.
Who can forget Keyshawn Johnson's TD on Monday night last year. It really bothers me that ESPN still uses that play as a 'highlight' lead-in on NFL matchup. Bogus play, horrible non-call again!

Remember when the Jets sent the Seahawks home and leaped into the playoffs after the refs decided Testaverde only needed to be 3 or 4 yeards from the end zone to justify a touchdown?

This is another example of the NFL playing it up for the big-market teams. As they say, follow the money. It's hardly ever an accident. Maybe once. But not twice. And not so blatantly.
