Snow, Apolo & more!

It's snowing in the city of Torino! We arrived on Friday and the city was sunny and beautiful. Yesterday I met up with with some Seattle tourists who were standing at the Piazza San Carlo where the Today Show was shooting. I also met three American students who had their faces painted red, white & blue in honor of the U.S. Men's hockey team. You'll meet them in one of my "Postcards fromTorino" reports on "Evening Magazine" this week...

I attended (as a spectator) the1000 m. short track speed skating final where Apolo Ohno took the bronze. I also saw the final of the women's 1500 m. The fans from Korea were in abundance -- they brought drums, horns and flags. We were sitting with a lot of other Americans, Canadians and Italians, but the Koreans were in force, and, good for them, because they took home the gold & silver in both events. At the end, I saw Apolo's dad, Yuki getting congratulated by friends and fans and he seemed genuinely pleased with the outcome even though Apolo didn't get the gold.

It seemed like all of Torino was out on Saturday night. The streets and plazas were all lit up with twinkling lights and packed with revelers. There's more traffic here at 11 PM than at rush hour! I don't think they ever sleep. But, now, I've got to hit the sack. Ciao for now....
