Putz may be out, but his hair is in

Just because J.J. Putz is out with a rib injury doesn't mean fans can't celebrate his style. The Mariners say they'll go forward with this weekend's Soul Patch Celebration Night, April 12 at Safeco, despite the fact Putz is on the DL. The first 20,000 fans to enter the stadium will get a sticker that looks like the all-star's facial hair. A Mariners spokesperson told the media: "Sure, we would have loved him to come out of the pen and get a save that night, but it will still be a fun promotion to salute one of our top players. After all, his soul is intact; it's just his rib that is hurt."

Sub Pop Records plans a birthday bash

April 1 marked the 20th anniversary for Seattle's Sub Pop Records, and the record label hasn't wasted any time getting the party started. Earlier this month, it hosted celebrations at Hattie's Hat and Chop Suey, and now rumors are making the rounds about a major summertime show. Sound Seattle blog has it from a good source that a 20th anniversary festival is set for July 12-13 at Marymoor Park in Redmond, with reunion shows by Green River and the Fluid, among others. While Sub Pop won't confirm the dates or venue, they say that yes, there is a 20th anniversary show in the works. We'll all just have to wait for more details. The show will "take place at the middle-of-nowhere &#@! venue White River Amphitheatre," writes Seattlest. Then they headed over to the Admiral Theater for a midnight showing. Lebowski fans tend to be a dedicated set.
Seattle girl recovering from bizarre surfing injury

West Seattle Blog is helping get the word out about 20-year-old Adrianna "Addie" Killam, a Seattle girl who suffered a bizarre surfing injury while on spring break in Maui. Addie flew back to Seattle this week to start rehab at the UW Medical Center. What she experienced is truly frightening. On March 19, she and three college friends took a surfing lesson. But while leaving the water, Addie felt strange. She started to feel numb in her toes. She had friends take her to the hospital, where she learned she had experienced a surfing injury known as "Surfer's Myelopathy" that affects the spinal chord and results in paralysis. West Seattle Blog reports that it's common in first-time surfers because when they twist their neck to look back at the waves, the blood supply to the spinal chord gets cut off. Full recovery is possible, but it's hard work. Addie Killam - who sounds very brave - is documenting her recovery online. Visitors can make a donation to help her on her journey.

Fighter jets spark Capitol Hill controversy

Seattleites got their first glimpse of the design for a new underground light rail station on Capitol Hill last night. From what I gather, a half-million-dollar art installation planned for the site had people up in arms. The artwork – designed by a Brooklyn sculptor – includes pieces of fighter jets dangling from the ceiling. But as KING 5 reported last night, many view Capitol Hill as the heart of Seattle's anti-war movement, and the last place where a war jet is welcome. "It's kind of like hanging a fighter jet in the living room. It doesn't fit and it's really kind of offensive," Kevin Long told KING 5. But one commenter on SLOG thinks some people just didn't get it, writing: "Everyone instantly told themselves that this thing is pro-war, pro-militarism, pro-Bush blah blah ... when in fact, the piece challenges war and planes and aggression, and this guy shares the same values and beliefs as our neighborhood." Hmmm. CHS Blog may have an idea that would keep everyone happy. They write: "We agree that Capitol Hill is no place for a chopped up fighter jet to hang. But we'd be cool if it were a dismantled Blue Angel or twelve. Deal?"

More speculation on Thierry joining Seattle MLS

A rumor that Seattle MLS was in talks with European player Thierry Henry started circulating in sports blogs last month. And the buzz about this possiblity just keeps growing. In terms of soccer stardom, Thierry (pictured here) is right up there with Beckham. This week the London Sun reports that Seattle is willing to offer the French kicker £150,000 a week to come to the United States. And Seattle MLS officials aren't denying the club's interest in Henry. General manager Adrian Hanauer tells the P-I today: "Thierry Henry is one of my favorite players of all time. He has spoken in the past about coming to MLS to play soccer ... I am now in a position with the Seattle franchise to consider such a player. It would be irresponsible of me not to explore and consider a possibility like this." In the meantime, the new team already has deposits for more than 13,000 season tickets, according to the P-I, and fans will learn the team's official name and colors Monday at a Seattle Center press conference.

Yum. I've never been to Trophy Cupcakes, so I'm not sure how they stack up against Cupcake Royale.
EWU student punks the New York Times

Ever heard of "rickrolling?" According to the Spokesman Review, it's a prank in which someone clicks on a internet link and ends up watching a video by Rick Astley – the 80s singer (pictured here) famous for the song "Never Gonna Give You Up." The Spokesman today reports that an Eastern Washington University student pulled a fast one on a New York Times reporter writing a story about "rickrolling." Twenty-two-year-old Pawl Fisher posted a YouTube video of someone lip-syncing "Never Gonna Give You Up" at an EWU women's basketball game. If you watch, it looks like the entire game comes to a pause as cheerleaders, athletes and audience members start rocking out to the song. The video ended up in a March 24 NYT article, with the reporter writing: "A routine timeout turned into a 1980s flashback, as two men on the sidelines briefly hijacked the proceedings with a popular prank known as rickrolling." But the incident never really happened – Pawl is an aspiring film-maker. He crafted the scene with film editing. "My intention was never to punk the New York Times," he told the Spokesman. "My intention was to punk the whole planet."
