A Californian explains why people move to Seattle
Reply to All blog today points to a list of 10 reasons people move to Seattle, as compiled by an L.A.-based headhunting agency. The list was inspired by a debate between Techcrunch and Redfin blogs on why Seattle is better than the Silicon Valley. No. 1 on the list is "no state income tax." Also included are nature, city life, weather, people and public transportation. The list says: "Whether you take the new Seattle Streetcar system, The Metro Transit system, The Rail Transit, or the Washington State Ferries you will be sure to get around town with no hassle." And as far as people, it says: "People in Seattle are nice and polite, like living in a small town." Hmmm … they've apparently never heard of the "Seattle Freeze."

Oh boy, another blog entry/article with gross generalizations about a city.
I so enjoy those.

I like the quote I heard from a respondent..."It’s really hard building meaningful relationships here - especially if you don’t drink, aren’t a sports fan or have/want kids".
Basically these victims of the "freeze" aren't finding people with their interests. Duh. Where are the social skills?

Seattle Freeze is us native Seattleites who have generations back to the Oregon Trail and have our family name on those "Historic Road Name" signs that are politely not saying, GO HOME.

Seattle Freeze?
for sure!
People born and raised here are tired of refugees from dead, burnt-out cities like L.A. moving here in hopes of finding their 'paradise'
They end up trying to turn OUR home into a mirror of the hell-hole they fled from.
Case-in-point:
Ballard
Go Home and take your lousy driving and your prissy, pretentious attitudes with you.

Hi Katherine. This is interesting. I've never heard of the term Seattle Freeze until it was commented about on my blog and then on your site. It sounds like a day in the life down here in LA. But then pretentious and self-centered people are almost a staple of LA's culture (not that I'm proud of it, bit a fact is a fact).
From the times I have visited Seattle, I have found the community feel to be considerably greater than in LA or the Bay Area for that matter. I guess it's all relative and a matter of perspective and experience.

Hey spongehead, did it occur to you those Californians are the reason your house is worth a half a million bucks? Oh, and is "good" driving going 50 mph in the passing-only lane? Yeah, you Seattle bluebloods are great. Isn't Seattle in a tacit way, always trying to be like San Francisco?

Wow trixy, you're a sweetheart! You know, I moved up here ten years ago from "the heartland" to get away from narrow-mindedness, conservatism and generally oppressive attitudes, and for the most part, it has been a very successful move. I work my ass off, I behave myself, I contribute to society and I am proud to live here. Thanks for letting me and "my kind" stand. Why not try tell all of the Asians, Blacks and Hispanics to leave too; I don't think they've got any streets named after them. Better yet, if you really wanna put your money where your provincial mouth is, go down to the Muckleshoot or Tulalip casino and explain to those folks why it’s your birthright to dictate who should live here!

Tamra, you are the reason why we dislike cali-fu-cans. Half million for a house, no wonder the american dream is dead, nobody can afford one. I agree 50 in the passing lane is annoying, but that didn't happen until you cali-fu-cans came here in droves to escape your hell just to recreate it up her for us washintonians. And no, we don't want to be like San Fran, we want to be better.

I've got news for you folks, the reason why the house is half a million now isn't Californians moving in. The reason is Washington's bizarre, intrusive land-use laws, which prevent new building in the country and force the population to live close to their work. Irrational environmentalism at it's best.
And, the only "Seattle Freeze" I've ever experienced has been the cold shoulder I get (as a conservative) every time I speak up about politics. And before you say, if you don't like it why don't you leave - believe me, that heartland is looking better and better every day....

I'll confess, I am a California transplant from the San Diego area. I came here 10 years ago and its taken me this long to mellow out from the stressful climate of unfriendly wannabe aristocrats and the high crime rate. Stroll through any mall parking lot in San Diego and more than half the cars have one of those steel anti theft devices across the steering wheel. My main complaint here is the brain dead manner in which people drive. Its like a slow moving herd of dumb animals. Other than that I love living here.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Driving tips from a Californian. That's like the Pope giving sex ed classes, to lesbians.
Look, just face it, from the day you turn legal to drive, you went and took the driving test, and got your license. No drivers ed, no practice with a parent or guardian, NO EXPERIENCE.
So, to fill evryone else in on the reason they just hand out drivers licenses in California. I recently went to Southern California to the DMV to take the drivers license test, to see how the problems start. Now without reading their drivers manual or any other form of help I correctly answered evry question. I then took the test in Spanish. Now keep in mind I don't speak or understand Spanish, I only missed one question.
So, now that I found the source of the bad driving, something sould be done. It seems the state of California hands out drivers licenses to anyone who can walk into their DMV's.
Oh, and just a little advice to you Clifornians who have already migrated, stay out of the passing lane on the interstate, it's for passing ,not for your clueless look , that you all have, driving 50 mph. There's no diamonds painted on the ground , so just stay in your correct lane.
