Should the Discovery Park coyote be killed?
You've probably seen the coyote in the news over the last few weeks. It attacked a couple cats in the Discovery Park area, and some folks are worried that their kids could be next. Lots of folks have been sending us photos, including this one snapped by Annie Huage this morning as her family was sledding above Lawton Elementary School...
Well, now the Navy says it's going to shoot and kill the animal. And as you might expect, there's now an effort underway to save the coyote. In fact, a Seattle Parks spokesperson told The Big Blog that the city will try to block the Navy from entering its property. So what do you think? Should the coyote be killed? Trapped and moved? Left alone? Let us know in comments below...
Update: The new plan is to try to trap and euthanize the coyote, instead of shooting it.

Leave the coyote alone, it isn't fair to kill it based on probabilities. There has to be a more humane way of dealing with this animal other than killing it.

Let's face it, the US military only knows one way to problem solve: invade and kill. If my cat were harmed by this coyote, I would be heartbroken, but I still wouldn't want the coyote to die. There's got to be a better solution people, let's get together on this and figure it out!

I don't want Coyote to be killed! Save the poor animal!

Leave the coyote alone . . .its bad enough the poor thing is trying to live in the city. DO NOT KILL THE COYOTE!!!!

The person with the US miliary comment should go live in another country and see how there military reacts. I live in federal Way and we have 2 coyotes living in the green belt behind our house. so far they have killed 3 of our cats. They have ran across our yard in broad daylight. They are a danger and should be killed. However federal Way won't do anything about it either.

We have coyotes in Madison Park who are killing dogs and cats. Missing signs are posted everywhere for these smaller animals. They are a danger and they are getting bolder about approaching small children. Something needs to be done, killing the coyote's maybe the only solution.

The coyote has as much of a right to be there as us. Learn to live with it. As for protecting your pets install a properly sized pet door into the garage or shed so they can get to safety. Besides it's probably helping to control the rodent population.

Send that coyote over here to Battle Point Park on Bainbridge and it can dine for free on tender young bunnies.

DO NOT KILL THE COYOTE. Being responsible and keeping your cats indoors is the better solution. If the food source is low they will kill small cats.
Posted by: Cathy | January 28, 2008 1:28 PM
The coyote was killing cats that shouldn't be outside to begin with. It's main source of food would be rats, mice and rabbits. If small dogs go outside they should be on leashes. If people would be more responsible with their pets then there wouldn't be an opportunity for this coyote to use them as food and it can focus on the small rodent population that needs to be controlled and can be controlled naturally through this animal.

Do not kill the coyote. Move the coyote to Eastern Washington where there is plenty of room and a good food supply.

No body has the right to kill those animals. We humans have been taking their spaces. Please do something to relocate them but killing is solution..
Posted by: Maria | January 28, 2008 3:26 PM
Why not trap it and RELOCATE it?!?!?
Only an ignorant person would think the only solution is to kill.
Parks are meant to preserve nature. And people want nature, but only if it's a sterilized disney version they can have total control over. If the Navy wants to kill something so bad, why not start with criminals such as the murderer who stabbed Shannon Harps. Now THERE is a REAL menace to society. Not a poor beautiful coyote.

I totally agree with Diana. Trap the animal and RELOCATE it. What is so hard about that? It solves every one's problem, including the poor Coyote who is only trying to earn a living. Remember - that was his home before humans decided they wanted to live in the "wild".
And another thing - if you have cats and small dogs - be a RESPONSIBLE owner. Keep the cats in - they get used to it- and your little dogs on a leash that is firmly attached to you hand.
That's what I do. It ain't that hard.

I dont live in Seattle, actually Tacoma but agree with the relocation idea, it seems more humane those poor things are just trying to survive
Posted by: kroller | January 28, 2008 4:37 PM
THE COYOTE SHOULD NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF A FEW IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS !!!
Posted by: john | January 28, 2008 4:42 PM
What's the difference between a coyote, rat, or even a cockroach? If it's an unwanted pest that presents a danger, then it should be exterminated.
Posted by: Alex | January 28, 2008 4:44 PM
the irresponsible pet owners should be relocated.
Posted by: Ann | January 28, 2008 5:29 PM
Please don't kill this beautiful animal.
Please use the "have a heart trap" and relocate the coyote to a habitat where he can thrive safely.
Posted by: ellen campbell | January 28, 2008 5:33 PM
What's the difference between Alex and a cockroach? Their both unwanted pest with no brains. Relocate is the worst thing that should be done to this coyote. Just because we invade THEIR habitats and then complain when they attack our pets because we have driven off their typical sources of food, don't take it out on the animals. Maybe we should be the ones who should leave it to it's place and stop killing everything we dislike.

These COYOTES are non-native who along with the Norway RAT followed the 1st Europeans coming across the states.
Also, many of te coyotes are HYBRID Dog mixes.
Just like RATS, you can shoot them, poison them with rat poison, run them over for kicks, or trap and drown them in a pond.

We need to TRAP all of the LIBERAL BLEEDING HEARTS and feed them to some hungry COYOTES.
COYOTES will tear your babies apart as well as eat you nasty LIBERALS.
Liberals taste like CHICKEN cause they are a bunch of whining bird brained chickens.
Posted by: howdy | January 28, 2008 8:32 PM
I am an Eastsider who has witnessed coyotes fool large dogs to follow them where as a pack they ambush them tearing them apart. My neighbors have had their pets, cats and medium sized dogs, grabbed in daylight off of their front porch, only to find them with heads torn off.
Coyotes are a worthless as the one poster mentioned, non-native evil creature.
We even had some children bitten by a coyote in Bellevue last year where a police officer was finally able to shoot it.
I do agree that the northwest is too full of left leaning fanatics who make it difficult to create some sense of order around here. These fanatics are responsible for people and their domestic pets getting hurt. It makes one want to pass some laws to round up all of these fanatics.
Posted by: Samual | January 28, 2008 8:40 PM
>>>"Left leaning fanatics"?<<<
If you ever have to treat some of these liberal types you would find how lost and mixed up they are. They are the worst at planning their daily lives. Their homes, if they own one, are in complete chaos. Their children aren't tought the basics on how to survive in society. These truly "left leaning fanatics", become a real burden for the rest of society through taxes to support.
An interesting point has been raised at comparing the coyotes and liberals as one of the same... free loaders who rob what they can without any morality.

hmm. well last i read, this blog is about a wild animal-- not wild people.
if one has the opportunity to save a beautiful animal that is only living as it would in the wild, WHY wouldn't you? it is we humans who have encroached on this animal's natural habitat. capture the coyote and relocate-- it's the humane thing, the right thing.

Killing is wrong!!! It's just an animal who wants to live, solution: RELOCATE it! Washington State has TONS of forest where the coyotes will be happy. To be honest, they have every right to be here as much as we do. New homes and businesses are taking away THEIR homes. So let them live and we have to apologize to THEM for taking their homes away. Killing is not a solution to anything.
Posted by: Angel | January 28, 2008 9:41 PM
no trap it and return it to the woods up in the mountains
Posted by: Pam Boyer | January 29, 2008 10:37 AM
Unfortunantly you can not trap the coyote and relocate it because coyotes are territorial and if they drop it somewhere it would probably just be killed by another coyote.
I say leave it alone, watch your own pets and let it live on the rodent population that threatens to take over the park on a regular basis.
Posted by: Traci H | January 29, 2008 10:39 AM
I vote for trapping and relocating him to my closet as a beautiful and warm fur coat.
Posted by: Dirk | January 29, 2008 11:24 AM
Keep your cats inside where they belong, keep your dogs on a leaash or in a fenced yard, and leave the coyote alone.
If you want to kill something, how about that SOB who stabbed that woman to death on Capitol Hill.

There are comments made that the Coyote is not a native animal. Well did it not occur to anyone that most Americans are not native to this country either? Coyotes are predators. They hunt for their food. They will use other members of the pack to surround and kill prey. Geez.. sounds like humans! If you don't want to donate your pet to the "Feed the Coyote" menu then keep your pets contained. Same with very small children. People make it sound like a 6 month old child is going to be playing in the park alone. People react too quickly. Just because we have an opposable thumb doesn't mean that we know everything. Look at the state of the planet.. we aren't doing so hot in the "making good decisions" area. Would we have so many issues if we ALWAYS knew the right decision EVERY time? Keep an open mind. That is all I am trying to convey

How many of the "don't kill the coyote" people here are vegetarians? Vegans?
MEAT IS MURDER!!
MILK IS MANSLAUGHTER!!
A SACRED ANIMAL DIED TO MAKE YOUR LEATHER SHOES!!

Let the coyote kill a couple kids - the fewer the better in my opinion. The cats/dogs are outside because of irresponsible pet owners. Why are the kids outside? Irresponsible parents?
No - its because we're encroaching on the coyote's territory. Same thing as people in Bellevue bitching about cougars. Uh, Duh!
How'd that comment grab you? Probably as good as Hunter's comments about the European settlers moving across the states. BTW - you're an idiot.
Posted by: missypoo | January 29, 2008 10:51 PM
Drop it with a tranquilizer dart and relocate it....Do it now!
We're wasting time and money just talking about it....
Posted by: Karl | January 30, 2008 12:37 AM
Maybe you should run the coyote for public office.
It seems to be making an honest living for a coyote, which is more than I can say for most of the political types. Also the coyote seems to be able to make up it's own mind on what needs to be done. Again more than what we can seem to do about it!

As a wildlife biologist I thank the Seattle Parks Department for thinking rationally and postponing killing the coyote. It is a time for EDUCATION rather than killing the coyotes in Seattle. Seattle has a great opportunity to set an example to the rest of the state and country to educate rather than kill every wild animal we don't like.
I highly commend the parks department for taking the right action. There must be rules not to let pets run loose, yet thousands of people let their cats roam free to kill hundreds of thousands of birds every year. The coyote is providing a healthy environment by minimizing predators. Coyotes can be a benefit, are a sign of a healthy environment and there are ways to coexist.
Other cities such as Chicago and Vancouver, BC are coexisting with coyotes and I hope Seattle will also. The large urban park in Vancouver, BC (Stanley Park) has a get educational program than Seattle could duplicate http://www.stanleyparkecology.ca/programs/urbanWildlife/coyotes/to
Seattle has a great opportunity to set an example to educate about wildlife rather than kill it.

KILL IT. My little maltese was just killed by a coyote, I'll never see him again and right now all I want is that ugly dog dead. Keep it in the park if you want to. They are not pets and it will eventually get way too comfortable with people and could go after a kid-its EXTREMELY possible I have done alot of research on their behavior lately. Relocate if you want too-far far far away. NO WHERE near people or their dogs. I don't think their cute cuddly or cool to see, if I see one I'm gonna kill it. I miss my little white dog SO much and I truly dont want anything this horrific to happen to any other family.
