Age requirement for kids hunting alone?

5:32 PM Mon, Aug 04, 2008 |

For many in the Northwest, hunting is a family sport. Kids and grandkids join their fathers and grandfathers for trips into the wild searching for game.
Until the mid '90s, to hunt alone, you had to be 14 years old. After a change in the law, the age restriction was dropped.
In the case of Pam Almli, an age restriction would not have saved her life, as the boy alleged to have fired the shot that killed her was 14. Still, officials ...

Principal accused of rape

9:42 PM Thu, Jul 24, 2008 |

Covering this story has led me to talk to many people. Some of whom believe the law shouldn't be so hard on adults who have sex with teens. That surprised me. Others I talked to say the laws are far too lax. What do you think?

Artist's Point

5:33 PM Wed, Jul 09, 2008 |

WSDOT has something pretty cool they've done connected with the opening of Artist's Point. They have attached a GPS device to the snow blower that's clearing the way. You can keep updated on the crew's progress by visiting:

Rotten Neighbors

5:32 PM Mon, Jun 30, 2008 |

It's no fun having a crummy neighbor.
My wife and I fell in love with a home in the Desert Southwest several years ago. It was everything we wanted but for one thing... our rotten neighbor.
His house was in such a state of disrepair I was reluctant to walk on the east side of my home. I feared the neighbor's rusty swamp cooler would fall off its second floor perch and kill me. Then there were the four foot weeds, the storm drain in...

Learning from their loss

10:27 PM Thu, Jun 19, 2008 |

Patrick and Lisa McCarthy have suffered the worst loss for two parents. Their 16 year old daughter is dead from an ecstasy overdose. But her case could help other families who face the same loss and prevent kids from making the same mistake.
Dona Huertas and Danielle McCarthy went to a New Years Eve party and did what too many kids do: they each took ecstasy. But over the next ten hours as Danielle vomited and went into seizures, prosecu...

Insane Clown Posse

5:01 PM Tue, May 13, 2008 |

I first heard of the band "Insane Clown Posse" several years ago. Until recently, I didn't even know they were still making music, let alone that they had a large following of hardcore fans called, "Juggalos."

Police say some of them have formed small gang-like groups and are causing trouble. (Read the full story here...

Sock for President?

12:22 PM Wed, Feb 20, 2008 |

Hmmm... a sock puppet for President.

As we interviewed people for this story, it was interesting to see how many people joked that a sock might be the best option.

The goal of the "Sock for President" campaign is to encourage younger voters to become involved and introduce them to candidates they probably haven't heard of.

While a lot people believe the two party...

Spring anyone?

3:55 PM Thu, Jan 31, 2008 |

I grew up in Western Washington. Sedro-Woolley to be exact. As a kid, the gray skies, rain and cold never bothered me.

After graduating from UW, I spent the next 10 years living throughout the West. Five of those years were spent in Las Vegas and Phoenix. When I moved back to the Northwest a little more than a year ago, I was shocked at just how much I'd changed. The grey skies that had gone unnoticed all those years, now really affect...

Small crimes -- big frustration

3:52 PM Thu, Jan 10, 2008 |

Most people have felt it at least once.

That sudden wave of panic and jolt of adreneline when you realize you're a victim. Someone has broken into your car, your home, maybe you've been vandalized. If you're like me, what follows is anger and you're asking yourself, "what kind of person does this?"

When I heard what happened to Tana Barro...

What police didn't find in the Alice Hummel investigation

5:46 PM Thu, Dec 13, 2007 |

As police began to investigate Bruce Hummel's claim that his wife committed suicide, they say they discovered holes in his story. Here are a couple of them.

A matter of faith and choice

4:33 PM Wed, Nov 28, 2007 |

14-year-old Dennis Lindberg wants to live.

Diagnosed with a treatable form of leukemia, the survival rate is 70-percent over 5 years for patients who are treated. But the treatment takes its toll on the body, requiring blood transfusions. But as much as Dennis wants to live, he has refused the transfusions because of his belief in the Jehovah's Witness faith.

14-year-olds cannot drive a car, they cannot vote, they cannot enlist...

Sex Offenders

5:15 PM Mon, Oct 01, 2007 |

Phillip Stordahl is accused of trying to set up a sexual encounter with a 12-year old boy online. As it turned out, there was no 12-year old. He was actually talking to an undercover detective.

Stordahl has a previous conviction for possessing child pornography. He is a registered Level I sex offender. Those are the people considered least likely to reoffend.

In Washington State, Level II and Level III offenders are li...

Against all odds, missing hiker found alive

8:14 PM Fri, Sep 21, 2007 |

As reporters, we're frequently dispatched to cover stories of missing hikers, climbers, etc. The experts will tell you, after 48 hours the likelihood of finding a person alive plummets.

Five days after Mary Hyde Wingfield went missing, searchers were still looking. While everyone put on a brave face, many admitted they weren't optimistic she would be found alive.

Keep the change

4:18 PM Mon, Sep 10, 2007 |

I remember something my dad used to say when he'd find change lying around. "It all spends the same," he would tell me.
I remember times earlier in my career when I'd count out my loose change and go buy dinner at whichever fast food restaurant had a deal.
But where do you draw the line? At what dollar amount does it become unreasonable to pay in change?
Does it all really spend the same?
I think I only have enough in m...

Hookah and the open-for-legal-interpretation smoking ban

8:59 PM Tue, Aug 28, 2007 |

Have you've ever taken a look at the language in our state's law banning smoking in public places?

Clearly the spirit of the law is to protect patrons and employees of public establishments from being subject to the ills of second-hand smoke.

Coffee with a dress code

9:00 AM Fri, Aug 24, 2007 |

Do you really care what your barista is wearing?

I don't. I love coffee. Good coffee. Personally, I can't imagine going to a coffee stand because the baristas wear skimpy or provocative outfits. Maybe if they sold the best coffee in Western Washington I would.

On the other hand, if my son were in the back seat, I can tell you where I wouldn't go.

Faster than a jammed freeway...

9:35 PM Mon, Aug 13, 2007 |

Today, the South Bureau (Photographer Tom Tedford and myself) got up early...really early. Like before the crack of dawn early.
We had to. That's what you do when you want to catch the Sounder Transit train as it makes its first run out of Tacoma.
Astonishingly, other people were up too. A lot of other people.
It seems everyone was trying to dodge the forecasted traffic mess on I-5 by training it to work.
That was cool ...

Animal abuse... the gateway crime

5:48 PM Fri, Jul 13, 2007 |

While on the surface it might appear to some to be a teen prank, it's arguably much more.
In Bellingham the last couple weeks, there have been two crows and two squirrels killed and left on display for neighbors to see. This is not a case of "kids being kids." Consider the people who have admitted their fasicination with death, began with animals and later turned to humans: Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz and Albert DeSalvo ar...

Rape accusation and a twisted road to the courthouse

12:26 AM Tue, Jun 19, 2007 |

The rape trial of a Tacoma middle school principal and his friend, an ex-con with a knack for being accused of sexual assault, should prove fascinating.
The story starts three years ago.
On January 31, 2004 a 19-year-old woman court documents refer to as “S.F.” was with a couple friends at a bar.
“S.F.” spotted some men she knew. Guys she thought she could trust. Herald Wright Jr. had been the Dean of Students at her high s...

A South Bureau First: The Video Blog

11:43 PM Wed, May 30, 2007 |

On May 17th, KING-5 ran a story about how the Tacoma Police Department mishandled more than 71 cases of serious violence against people.
The story showed how some of the suspects that went free as the result of the mishandled cases are still a danger to the community. In one case, an accused rapist went on to allegedly rape another woman.
The report also showed how the derelict cases eluded the attention of Tacoma Police supervis...

A story with a questionable story

9:40 PM Mon, May 28, 2007 |

Memorial Day. A national holiday. That usually means it's going to be a slow news day.
Or so I thought until about 8:40 this morning.
The police scanner I keep just above the computer in my office at home crackled with a disturbing report.
"Victim with a gunshot wound...scene unsecure," said the dispatcher in a most professional tone (dispatchers always sound remarkably dispassionate).
