What are you taking?

3:10 PM Mon, Oct 06, 2008 |

In doing this story, I gained a whole new understanding of why patients need to be actively involved in their own medical care.
People react to drugs differently. Powerful painkillers like methadone and oxycodone do help a lot of people cope with chronic pain, but not enough is known about how much is really safe, especially when the drugs are combined with other prescriptions.
The statistics are more clear. According to the Washin...

Why look at Metro OT?

4:17 PM Tue, Sep 30, 2008 |

Being a Metro bus driver takes skill, focus, and patience. Lots of it. And they aren't doing anything wrong, or breaking any rules by putting in the tough hours, and making overtime; in some cases doubling their salaries.
So why'd we look into the issue?
Metro is hurting. In August, King County Executive Ron Sims announced that because of high fuel prices and loss of sales tax revenues, the system could be $70,000,000 in the red by...

Why silence is wrong

12:24 PM Thu, Sep 25, 2008 |

Before I did this story, I'd heard of the "Don't Snitch" code, but I didn't realize how widespread it's become. Seattle Gang Expert Gabe Morales tells me that "snitch" used to refer primarily to prison inmates who give police information, sometimes false information, in order to get some sort of preferential treatment. But through heavy marketing--via internet websites, music videos and even clothing--"snitch" has come to mean anyone who tal...

Condo Conversions: Is the worst still to come?

3:41 PM Mon, Sep 22, 2008 |

Owners of condo conversions aren't going to like this, but there are signs that the problems we profiled in our investigation are just the tip of a large iceberg.

The conversion craze peaked in the Puget Sound region in 2006, according to apartment analyst Dupre and Scott, with 6000 units converted from apartments into condos that year. The experts who inspect converted condos say it often takes 3 or 4 years for the signs of damage ...

Who was Justine Booth?

6:08 PM Wed, Sep 17, 2008 |

Because of TV time constraints I often feel like people in our stories get boiled down to oversimplified characterizations. Take Justine Booth. In stories we've done about her she is described like this: Justine Booth, a 33-year-old developmentally disabled woman with seizure disorders, who drowned in a bathtub while under state care.
Justine Booth should be defined by much more than her tragic death.
Justine was strong willed, car...

Ike at our Doorstep

6:40 PM Fri, Sep 12, 2008 |

Power is now out on all of Galveston Island, a tornado watch has just been posted for most of the counties in southeast Texas. The eye of the storm is tightening up offshore which will increase wind speeds. The storm may come ashore as a Cat 3, higher winds to go with the big storm surge. Crews trying to keep out of flooding report plenty of flying debris making it unsafe to setup in many areas. A fire on Galveston Island is now jumping from h...

Hunkered Down for the Storm

2:58 PM Fri, Sep 12, 2008 |

It's 5pm here. Ike is moving ashore. Galveston Island, areas around Galveston Bay and the Bolivar Pennisula have been flooded from the storm surge for hours. The surge rose so quickly in places some that had tried to evacuate had to be rescued. As the winds and danger increase we "hide' satellite trucks and crews - sheltering them from the increasing winds. They've already been moved out of the way of high water - that storm surge.

On the Ground for Ike

11:30 PM Thu, Sep 11, 2008 |

It's 1:30 am. Just landed in Houston, home of KING's sister-station KHOU. The city and, in particular, Galveston Island to the south are in the bullseye for Hurricane Ike. KHOU is now in continuous storm coverage and we've arrived to help the staff here as they deal with covering the storm and worrying about their families. From the people I talked to at the airport to those at the local hamburger joint you can tell the anxiety and uncertaint...

Ice mass afloat

4:51 PM Wed, Sep 03, 2008 |

It's old, cold and enormous and now it's floating free in the Arctic Ocean.
Scientists say a 4,500-year-old ice shelf broke off last month surprising scientists and adding fuel to the climate change debate.
The Markham Ice Shelf is 19 square miles in size, about the size of Manhatten, and has now broken cleanly away from Ellesmere Island in Canada's northern Arctic.
Arctic ice shelf specialist Derek Mueller says, "The Markham...

Unsung heroes

5:21 PM Thu, Aug 14, 2008 |

Four of Alison Lindner's colleagues have fallen to bullet-riddled ambushes in Afghanistan. They were all innocent international relief/aid workers and humanitarians. I reported on the latest murder today. (Read the story here.)

Yet, Alison, who now works at Seattle-area based "World Concern," relates feeling compelle...

Reviving the exploration spirit

5:46 PM Wed, Aug 13, 2008 |

When The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administation (NOAA) commissioned its new ship this week, it launched the grandest exploration effort this nation has seen since Lewis and Clark.
The crew of the Okeanos Explorer has been ordered to seek out the secrets of the oceans and share them with the nation.
Experts estimate more than 90 percent of the ocean floor is unexplored. They say we have better maps of the surface of Mars tha...

Astronaut Pedals Across the Country

2:24 PM Mon, Aug 11, 2008 |

As the first Native American astronaut in space, John Herrington learned that with the right inspiration and education, dreams can literally come true. He spent 330 hours in orbit back in 2002, but now is planning for a much longer expedition -- a three month bicycle ride from Cape Flattery, WA to Cape Canaveral, FL.
Herrington is weighing down his bike with technology that includes a GPS, a laptop, a tiny camera and more so that his en...

Coffee and pastries... women in pasties?!

4:31 PM Tue, Aug 05, 2008 |

I've always considered myself a "live and let live" kinda guy. Even when a smoker's cigarette burns my eyes I figure -- who am I to keep this guy from slowly killing himself?
I pretty much feel that way with most things. If Britney Spears wants to shave her various body parts before the paparazzi, or college kids want to ruin their chances at a run for public office by posting pictures of themselves playing naked beer pong on Myspace, so...

Six feet under... and getting deeper

3:35 PM Mon, Aug 04, 2008 |

Six human feet have washed ashore in Northwest waters since last August -- the latest confirmed just today (Monday). And while for many the mystery conjures images of sadistic hack saw weilding psychopaths, the reality is likely far different. Forensic pathologists will tell you that hands, feet and other extremeties are the first things to detach from a body after it has been submerged in water and starts to decompose. Feet are sometimes the...

Alabama ads attack Boeing over tanker

2:16 PM Fri, Aug 01, 2008 |

The Boeing vs. Northrop Grumman/Airbus battle over an Air Force tanker contract has hit the radio airwaves. A group calling itself Alabamians for America's Tankers has launched radio ads attacking Boeing over its protest of the refueling tanker contract that was awarded to the Northrop/Airbus group earlier this year.

Update: Bothell reverse home auction

10:45 AM Fri, Aug 01, 2008 |

The man selling his Bothell home in what he calls a reverse auction has made his final price drop.
Justin Wilcox lowered the price of his nearly 3,000 square foot, three story home another $15,000 yesterday to $424,900. He started it at just under $500,000.
Wilcox says right now it's the cheapest price per square foot in Bothell.

Riding With SPD's Gang Unit

12:50 PM Tue, Jul 29, 2008 |

When I arranged to spend two weekends riding with the Seattle Police Gang Unit, I expected we would respond to shootings and patrol trouble spots where gang violence has been prevalent. But watching the detectives work gives me a new appreciation for the concept of "proactive policing."
When Detectives Shandy Cobane and Bobby Sevaaetasi stop into a Seattle park known as a hangout for the Deuce 8's - a faction of the Black Gangster Disc...

Witnesses to plane crash wanted to help

7:11 PM Thu, Jul 24, 2008 |

It's so rare to see a seaplane land on Lake Nahwatzel, John Acocks had to take a picture of it. He didn't know seconds later it would be in flames.
The two people on board died upon impact. The subsequent explosion triggered a wildfire.
John and his wife, Carol have a summer home along the lake west of Shelton. They watched the two people on board standing on the plane's pontoons moments before taking off. He thought about offering...

M's create "No-Peanut Zone"

5:32 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008 |

It sounds strange at first, but yes, the Mariners created a "No-Peanut" zone for two games later this year.
Why you ask? They must make thousands of bucks a game on Peanuts.
It's simpler than you think.
Mike San Soucie, a lifelong baseball fan, passionately and politely, asked.
See, his 4-year-old son, Nathan, has a severe, life-threatening peanut allergy and, frankly, peanuts, popcorn and Cracker Jacks are hard to avoi...

City still refusing to release McIver arrest video

2:49 PM Wed, Jul 16, 2008 |

Once again, the City of Seattle is refusing to release a video that recorded the arrest of a current city councilmember. In one month, the City of Seattle has given KING5 News no less than four different explanations why it will not release the video. The reasons range from privacy concerns to the video was nowhere to be found.

Victim of hit-and-run needs help

4:59 PM Fri, Jul 11, 2008 |

For years Celia Gorski helped others as a registered nurse. Now, friends say, it's Celia that needs the help.
We featured the Lacey mother in a story last month. She was seriously injured when a hit and run driver slammed into her car in Olympia. The driver who caused the crash sped off, but left behind a piece of his bumper. That evidence and the subsequent news coverage helped Washington State Patrol detectives identify and arrest a su...

NBA intervenes in Schultz suit - Really?

11:54 AM Wed, Jul 09, 2008 |

In homage to Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler of Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update - Click here to see what I'm referring to - I have some thoughts about the NBA's decision to intervene in the Howard Schultz lawsuit to rescind the 2006 sale of the Sonics to Clay Bennett.
Really!?!
The NBA says it's intervening because the lawsuit i...

Sonics - What the city will be missing

6:08 PM Thu, Jul 03, 2008 |

I've often heard the argument.

People have told me "No one cares about the Sonics" or "We shouldn't subsidize Professional Sports Teams."
Other people will constantly debate from this day forward whether the city should have settled the lawsuit.

I won't debate the merits of those claims, but I'll ask you this.

Would you care if Benaroya Hall suddenly went dark?
What if McCaw Hall saw it's major tenant go awa...

What to name Oklahoma City's new team

10:58 AM Thu, Jul 03, 2008 |

While Sonics fans try to live with the consolation that the team's name will stay in Seattle, fans in Oklahoma City are wondering what their new NBA team will be called. We're inviting you to come up with a name for the new OKC franchise. Feel free to be creative, but please, keep it clean. Read our content submission rules

Sonics are leaving: What will you remember?

3:43 PM Wed, Jul 02, 2008 |

A settlement has been reached between the Seattle SuperSonics and the City of Seattle, clearing the way for the Sonics to leave the Emerald City. The team's name and history stay here, along with the memories.
My favorite memory is Game 4 of the 1993 Western Conference Finals against the Suns. That's when KeyArena was still the Seattle Center Coliseum. Our seats were terrible - we could barely tell what was happening, but it was a blast ...
