On to the true outback Bookmark and Share

Once again we have had a wonderful visit in the wonderful place called Penola. We have great friends here in South Australia who take great care of us and make us feel very much at home halfway around the world from Seattle.

Yes, in fact they spoil us rotten. We have had delicious dinners and fine, fine wine. We have toured the wineries and walked the pine forests and played petanque with the boys. We have strolled the twp-block stretch of stores that is the downtown core, the CBD of this town of a thousand or so. We have had cold beers and hot lamb-burgers at Heywards, the local pub.
And now, on to phase four. We drive to Adelaide today and take a flight to Alice Springs tomorrow. After that it is four days in the true outback, exploring Uluru and Kings Canyon and the dry, red center of this fascinating continent.
When I have told Australians in the last few weeks that we're going to Alice and the rock most have said "Gee, I always wanted to do that."
I have only found a few who have made the trek. And it is a trek. If you were driving, picture driving to Iowa from Seattle but driving mostly through desert and range land with huge ranches and very little population along the way. It is a trek. Fortunately, we will go by air and save our enrgies for camping and touring.
Can't wait to see the southern night sky with the nearest source of light being little Alice Springs 150 miles away. It should be fabulous.
