Breast Cancer Three Day Walk - Day 1 Bookmark and Share

7:49 PM Sun, Sep 13, 2009 |

The first day is done -- and my feet feel exactly like they've been dragged across 21 miles of pavement. Only two days and 39 miles to go.
Fortunately today I had some great inspiration to keep me going.

I was "adopted" onto Team Scoccolo. If you haven't heard about them, I did a story on them several months ago and caught up with them again this morning. Tony Scoccolo is a young firefighter with the Port of Seattle. His mother died of breast cancer exactly one year ago. He wanted to do the 60 mile walk this year in his mother's honor. And -- if you know firefighters, you know that they don't walk alone. Four of his brothers decided to also raise the $2,300 required, and do the walk with him.
So as I walk, my aching feet seem pretty minor compared to the ache in Tony's heart and the sympathy in the hearts of his brothers.
Did I mention that they decided to walk in 80 pounds of firefigthting gear? Today, it was 80 degrees outside. They literally risked their lives to make a statement about the need for a cure.
My feet ache, but my heart soars.
