Ex-TV anchor turned candidate shuns TV interview Bookmark and Share

10:40 AM Thu, Apr 09, 2009 |

She's off and running - Running away from a television interview.
On the day former television anchor Susan Hutchison announced her candidacy for King County Executive, she declined to do a television interview about her stand on the issues.

On Wednesday, Hutchison's public relations firm issued a press release announcing she will run for office. But, the firm told King 5 News, Hutchison was "too busy" to answer questions as part of a news story on her campaign launch.
Called at the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences, where Hutchison acts as executive director, I was referred back to Hutchison's public relations firm.
Any candidate for public office, especially on the day of a campaign launch, should expect to be available for public inquiry.
If elected King County Executive, in the event of an important county issue, would Hutchison refer media calls to her public relations manager?

Did I miss something? Who is Jean?

Cathy's comment is right-on about Susan Hutchinson. Susan Hutchison has been popular with people from every walk of life. Susan is bright and has a manner of expressing reasoning and optimism that is a breath of fresh air. Susan understands how to solve problems without a 'money' solution to every problem. People have loved her for many many years for good reason.

Uhhh, Cathy? you there? who's Jean? And why is everyone agreeing with Cathy? Are you confusing every female news anchor in Seattle with the all mighty Jean Enerson? Good article Linda Brill, wish Susan hadn't done that bcs. it starts her off on the wrong foot. Conservatives in this town need to start off strong and I fear that this mis-step may prove to be a problem.

Second question...Who's Jean?

Something tells me reps from Susan's PR firm are showing up in force in the comments area on this blog. I'm in PR. I can smell the lingo a mile away.

(No, I don't represent any politicians, I'm just curious about Susan because I know people who've worked with her before.)

If she has such "bright insight" and "understands how to solve problems" why won't she speak to the media? I don't buy the "too busy" comment, because as a budding politician--- speaking to the people through the media is not only smart, it's crucial.

The most recent political instance I can think of where a "breath of fresh air" was sequestered from the media was Sarah Palin. And that did not end well. Once she was finally let loose and allowed to talk to Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric there was such pent-up demand to hear her speak that everyone tuned in--- and quickly realized WHY she'd been sequestered.

Smarten up, guys. If Susan is serious about representing King County, she should free up her schedule for a 15-30 minute sit-down interview so we can find out more about her.

Why wouldn't she do an interview? What is she trying to hide?

Linda Brill is just jealous that a colleague from a competing station has gone on to do bigger and better things.

Agree, Linda Brill is just jealous... How caddy. Can't you wish her well? I do, and I'm an overtaxed Democrat...

Kara said:

I'm confused.

Why is Linda catty for wanting to talk to someone who is running for office...?

Believe it or not, in some societies it's kind of expected....

Geoff said:

B and Heidi, please get a clue.

Susan Hutchison for King County Executive - thank goodness! Finally, someone who has good common sense, wisdom and dedication to this community to oppose these 3 good ol' boys who have brought us to where we are today - businesses and jobs leaving King County, higher taxes, higher assessments not compatible with the decline in home values. Good for Heidi (overtaxed Democrat) for recognizing that Susan should be wished well - why are women their own worst enemy?!!

Linda Brill, you should know as well as anyone that no wise candidate does a tv interview this early. Did you ask the others?

Those of you who support Susan H: How do you know she's smart? From the newscasts she's read over the years? What do you really know about Susan?

We need a fighter as KC Executive. One who doesn't shy away from interviews. The job of executive is not a walk in the park, Susan. The interviews will be the least of your worries.

Thanks for sharing, Linda Brill!

I must admit: I do not personally know Susan, and therefore cannot account for how "bright" she actually is. But that characteristic alone does not qualify her to be King County Executive. And seeing as she refuses to express her opinions thus far, we cannot know what she would do with the position. That's a little frightening. It's ironic how a former TV news anchor appears to have a fear of the media.
